ਸੁੰਦਰੁ ਸੁਘੜੁ ਸੁਜਾਣੁ ਬੇਤਾ ਗੁਣ ਗੋਵਿੰਦ ਅਮੁਲਿਆ ॥ sundar sugharr sujaan betaa gun govind amuliaa | The Lord of the Universe is beautiful, proficient, wise and all-knowing; - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਵਡਭਾਗਿ ਪਾਇਆ ਦੁਖੁ ਗਵਾਇਆ ਭਈ ਪੂਰਨ ਆਸ ਜੀਉ ॥ vaddabhaag paaeaa dukh gavaaeaa bhee pooran aas jeeo | His Virtues are priceless. By great good fortune, I have found Him; my pain is dispelled, and my hopes are fulfilled. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਬਿਨਵੰਤਿ ਨਾਨਕ ਸਰਣਿ ਤੇਰੀ ਮਿਟੀ ਜਮ ਕੀ ਤ੍ਰਾਸ ਜੀਉ ॥੨॥ binavant naanak saran teree mittee jam kee traas jeeo |2| Prays Nanak, I have entered Your Sanctuary, Lord, and my fear of death is eradicated. ||2|| - Guru Arjan Dev Ji

ਸਾਧਸੰਗਤਿ ਬਿਨੁ ਭ੍ਰਮਿ ਮੁਈ ਕਰਤੀ ਕਰਮ ਅਨੇਕ ॥ saadhasangat bin bhram muee karatee karam anek | Without the Saadh Sangat, the Company of the Holy, one dies wandering around in confusion, performing all sorts of rituals. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਕੋਮਲ ਬੰਧਨ ਬਾਧੀਆ ਨਾਨਕ ਕਰਮਹਿ ਲੇਖ ॥੧॥ komal bandhan baadheea naanak karameh lekh |1| O Nanak, all are bound by the attractive bonds of Maya, and the karmic record of past actions. ||1|| - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਜੋ ਭਾਣੇ ਸੇ ਮੇਲਿਆ ਵਿਛੋੜੇ ਭੀ ਆਪਿ ॥ jo bhaane se meliaa vichhorre bhee aap | Those who are pleasing to God are united with Him; He separates others from Himself. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਨਾਨਕ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਸਰਣਾਗਤੀ ਜਾ ਕਾ ਵਡ ਪਰਤਾਪੁ ॥੨॥ naanak prabh saranaagatee jaa kaa vadd parataap |2| Nanak has entered the Sanctuary of God; His greatness is glorious! ||2|| - Guru Arjan Dev Ji

ਗ੍ਰੀਖਮ ਰੁਤਿ ਅਤਿ ਗਾਖੜੀ ਜੇਠ ਅਖਾੜੈ ਘਾਮ ਜੀਉ ॥ greekham rut at gaakharree jetth akhaarrai ghaam jeeo | In the summer season, in the months of Jayt’h and Asaarh, the heat is terrible, intense and severe. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਪ੍ਰੇਮ ਬਿਛੋਹੁ ਦੁਹਾਗਣੀ ਦ੍ਰਿਸਟਿ ਨ ਕਰੀ ਰਾਮ ਜੀਉ ॥ prem bichhohu duhaaganee drisatt na karee raam jeeo | The discarded bride is separated from His Love, and the Lord does not even look at her. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਨਹ ਦ੍ਰਿਸਟਿ ਆਵੈ ਮਰਤ ਹਾਵੈ ਮਹਾ ਗਾਰਬਿ ਮੁਠੀਆ ॥ neh drisatt aavai marat haavai mahaa gaarab muttheea | She does not see her Lord, and she dies with an aching sigh; she is defrauded and plundered by her great pride. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਜਲ ਬਾਝੁ ਮਛੁਲੀ ਤੜਫੜਾਵੈ ਸੰਗਿ ਮਾਇਆ ਰੁਠੀਆ ॥ jal baajh machhulee tarrafarraavai sang maaeaa ruttheea | She flails around, like a fish out of water; attached to Maya, she is alienated from the Lord. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਕਰਿ ਪਾਪ ਜੋਨੀ ਭੈ ਭੀਤ ਹੋਈ ਦੇਇ ਸਾਸਨ ਜਾਮ ਜੀਉ ॥ kar paap jonee bhai bheet hoee dee saasan jaam jeeo | She sins, and so she is fearful of reincarnation; the Messenger of Death will surely punish her. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਬਿਨਵੰਤਿ ਨਾਨਕ ਓਟ ਤੇਰੀ ਰਾਖੁ ਪੂਰਨ ਕਾਮ ਜੀਉ ॥੩॥ binavant naanak ott teree raakh pooran kaam jeeo |3| Prays Nanak, take me under Your sheltering support, Lord, and protect me; You are the Fulfiller of desire. ||3|| - Guru Arjan Dev Ji

ਸਰਧਾ ਲਾਗੀ ਸੰਗਿ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਮੈ ਇਕੁ ਤਿਲੁ ਰਹਣੁ ਨ ਜਾਇ ॥ saradhaa laagee sang preetamai ik til rehan na jaae | With loving faith, I am attached to my Beloved; I cannot survive without Him, even for an instant. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਮਨ ਤਨ ਅੰਤਰਿ ਰਵਿ ਰਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ ਸਹਜਿ ਸੁਭਾਇ ॥੧॥ man tan antar rav rahe naanak sehaj subhaae |1| He is permeating and pervading my mind and body, O Nanak, with intuitive ease. ||1|| - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਕਰੁ ਗਹਿ ਲੀਨੀ ਸਾਜਨਹਿ ਜਨਮ ਜਨਮ ਕੇ ਮੀਤ ॥ kar geh leenee saajaneh janam janam ke meet | My Friend has taken me by the hand; He has been my best friend, lifetime after lifetime. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਚਰਨਹ ਦਾਸੀ ਕਰਿ ਲਈ ਨਾਨਕ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਹਿਤ ਚੀਤ ॥੨॥ charanah daasee kar lee naanak prabh hit cheet |2| He has made me the slave of His feet; O Nanak, my consciousness is filled with love for God. ||2|| - Guru Arjan Dev Ji

ਰੁਤਿ ਬਰਸੁ ਸੁਹੇਲੀਆ ਸਾਵਣ ਭਾਦਵੇ ਆਨੰਦ ਜੀਉ ॥ rut baras suheleea saavan bhaadave aanand jeeo | The rainy season is beautiful; the months of Saawan and Bhaadon bring bliss. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਘਣ ਉਨਵਿ ਵੁਠੇ ਜਲ ਥਲ ਪੂਰਿਆ ਮਕਰੰਦ ਜੀਉ ॥ ghan unav vutthe jal thal pooriaa makarand jeeo | The clouds are low, and heavy with rain; the waters and the lands are filled with honey. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਪੂਰਿ ਰਹਿਆ ਸਰਬ ਠਾਈ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮ ਨਵ ਨਿਧਿ ਗ੍ਰਿਹ ਭਰੇ ॥ prabh poor rahiaa sarab tthaaee har naam nav nidh grih bhare | God is all-pervading everywhere; the nine treasures of the Lord’s Name fill the homes of all hearts. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਸਿਮਰਿ ਸੁਆਮੀ ਅੰਤਰਜਾਮੀ ਕੁਲ ਸਮੂਹਾ ਸਭਿ ਤਰੇ ॥ simar suaamee antarajaamee kul samoohaa sabh tare | Meditating in remembrance on the Lord and Master, the Searcher of hearts, all one’s ancestry is saved. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਪ੍ਰਿਅ ਰੰਗਿ ਜਾਗੇ ਨਹ ਛਿਦ੍ਰ ਲਾਗੇ ਕ੍ਰਿਪਾਲੁ ਸਦ ਬਖਸਿੰਦੁ ਜੀਉ ॥ pria rang jaage neh chhidr laage kripaal sad bakhasind jeeo | No blemish sticks to that being who remains awake and aware in the Love of the Lord; the Merciful Lord is forever forgiving. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਬਿਨਵੰਤਿ ਨਾਨਕ ਹਰਿ ਕੰਤੁ ਪਾਇਆ ਸਦਾ ਮਨਿ ਭਾਵੰਦੁ ਜੀਉ ॥੪॥ binavant naanak har kant paaeaa sadaa man bhaavand jeeo |4| Prays Nanak, I have found my Husband Lord, who is forever pleasing to my mind. ||4|| - Guru Arjan Dev Ji

ਆਸ ਪਿਆਸੀ ਮੈ ਫਿਰਉ ਕਬ ਪੇਖਉ ਗੋਪਾਲ ॥ aas piaasee mai firau kab pekhau gopaal | Thirsty with desire, I wander around; when will I behold the Lord of the World? - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਹੈ ਕੋਈ ਸਾਜਨੁ ਸੰਤ ਜਨੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਮੇਲਣਹਾਰ ॥੧॥ hai koee saajan sant jan naanak prabh melanahaar |1| Is there any humble Saint, any friend, O Nanak, who can lead me to meet with God? ||1|| - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਬਿਨੁ ਮਿਲਬੇ ਸਾਂਤਿ ਨ ਊਪਜੈ ਤਿਲੁ ਪਲੁ ਰਹਣੁ ਨ ਜਾਇ ॥ bin milabe saant na aoopajai til pal rehan na jaae | Without meeting Him, I have no peace or tranquility; I cannot survive for a moment, even for an instant. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਹਰਿ ਸਾਧਹ ਸਰਣਾਗਤੀ ਨਾਨਕ ਆਸ ਪੁਜਾਇ ॥੨॥ har saadhah saranaagatee naanak aas pujaae |2| Entering the Sanctuary of the Lord’s Holy Saints, O Nanak, my desires are fulfilled. ||2|| - Guru Arjan Dev Ji

ਰੁਤਿ ਸਰਦ ਅਡੰਬਰੋ ਅਸੂ ਕਤਕੇ ਹਰਿ ਪਿਆਸ ਜੀਉ ॥ rut sarad addanbaro asoo katake har piaas jeeo | In the cool, autumn season, in the months of Assu and Katik, I am thirsty for the Lord. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਖੋਜੰਤੀ ਦਰਸਨੁ ਫਿਰਤ ਕਬ ਮਿਲੀਐ ਗੁਣਤਾਸ ਜੀਉ ॥ khojantee darasan firat kab mileeai gunataas jeeo | Searching for the Blessed Vision of His Darshan, I wander around wondering, when will I meet my Lord, the treasure of virtue? - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਬਿਨੁ ਕੰਤ ਪਿਆਰੇ ਨਹ ਸੂਖ ਸਾਰੇ ਹਾਰ ਕੰਙਣ ਧ੍ਰਿਗੁ ਬਨਾ ॥ bin kant piaare neh sookh saare haar kangan dhrig banaa | Without my Beloved Husband Lord, I find no peace, and all my necklaces and bracelets become cursed. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਸੁੰਦਰਿ ਸੁਜਾਣਿ ਚਤੁਰਿ ਬੇਤੀ ਸਾਸ ਬਿਨੁ ਜੈਸੇ ਤਨਾ ॥ sundar sujaan chatur betee saas bin jaise tanaa | So beautiful, so wise, so clever and knowing; still, without the breath, it is just a body. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਈਤ ਉਤ ਦਹ ਦਿਸ ਅਲੋਕਨ ਮਨਿ ਮਿਲਨ ਕੀ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਪਿਆਸ ਜੀਉ ॥ eet ut deh dis alokan man milan kee prabh piaas jeeo | I look here and there, in the ten directions; my mind is so thirsty to meet God! - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਬਿਨਵੰਤਿ ਨਾਨਕ ਧਾਰਿ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਮੇਲਹੁ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਗੁਣਤਾਸ ਜੀਉ ॥੫॥ binavant naanak dhaar kirapaa melahu prabh gunataas jeeo |5| Prays Nanak, shower Your Mercy upon me; unite me with Yourself, O God, O treasure of virtue. ||5|| - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
