ਕਾਹੂ ਬਿਹਾਵੈ ਮਾਇ ਬਾਪ ਪੂਤ ॥ kaahoo bihaavai maae baap poot | Some pass their lives with their mothers, fathers and children. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਕਾਹੂ ਬਿਹਾਵੈ ਰਾਜ ਮਿਲਖ ਵਾਪਾਰਾ ॥ kaahoo bihaavai raaj milakh vaapaaraa | Some pass their lives in power, estates and trade. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਸੰਤ ਬਿਹਾਵੈ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮ ਅਧਾਰਾ ॥੧॥ sant bihaavai har naam adhaaraa |1| The Saints pass their lives with the support of the Lord’s Name. ||1|| - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਰਚਨਾ ਸਾਚੁ ਬਨੀ ॥ rachanaa saach banee | The world is the creation of the True Lord. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਸਭ ਕਾ ਏਕੁ ਧਨੀ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥ sabh kaa ek dhanee |1| rahaau | He alone is the Master of all. ||1||Pause|| - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਕਾਹੂ ਬਿਹਾਵੈ ਬੇਦ ਅਰੁ ਬਾਦਿ ॥ kaahoo bihaavai bed ar baad | Some pass their lives in arguments and debates about scriptures. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਕਾਹੂ ਬਿਹਾਵੈ ਰਸਨਾ ਸਾਦਿ ॥ kaahoo bihaavai rasanaa saad | Some pass their lives tasting flavors. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਕਾਹੂ ਬਿਹਾਵੈ ਲਪਟਿ ਸੰਗਿ ਨਾਰੀ ॥ kaahoo bihaavai lapatt sang naaree | Some pass their lives attached to women. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਸੰਤ ਰਚੇ ਕੇਵਲ ਨਾਮ ਮੁਰਾਰੀ ॥੨॥ sant rache keval naam muraaree |2| The Saints are absorbed only in the Name of the Lord. ||2|| - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਕਾਹੂ ਬਿਹਾਵੈ ਖੇਲਤ ਜੂਆ ॥ kaahoo bihaavai khelat jooaa | Some pass their lives gambling. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਕਾਹੂ ਬਿਹਾਵੈ ਅਮਲੀ ਹੂਆ ॥ kaahoo bihaavai amalee hooaa | Some pass their lives getting drunk. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਕਾਹੂ ਬਿਹਾਵੈ ਪਰ ਦਰਬ ਚੋੁਰਾਏ ॥ kaahoo bihaavai par darab chuoraae | Some pass their lives stealing the property of others. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਹਰਿ ਜਨ ਬਿਹਾਵੈ ਨਾਮ ਧਿਆਏ ॥੩॥ har jan bihaavai naam dhiaae |3| The humble servants of the Lord pass their lives meditating on the Naam. ||3|| - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਕਾਹੂ ਬਿਹਾਵੈ ਜੋਗ ਤਪ ਪੂਜਾ ॥ kaahoo bihaavai jog tap poojaa | Some pass their lives in Yoga, strict meditation, worship and adoration. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਕਾਹੂ ਰੋਗ ਸੋਗ ਭਰਮੀਜਾ ॥ kaahoo rog sog bharameejaa | Some, in sickness, sorrow and doubt. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਕਾਹੂ ਪਵਨ ਧਾਰ ਜਾਤ ਬਿਹਾਏ ॥ kaahoo pavan dhaar jaat bihaae | Some pass their lives practicing control of the breath. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਸੰਤ ਬਿਹਾਵੈ ਕੀਰਤਨੁ ਗਾਏ ॥੪॥ sant bihaavai keeratan gaae |4| The Saints pass their lives singing the Kirtan of the Lord’s Praises. ||4|| - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਕਾਹੂ ਬਿਹਾਵੈ ਦਿਨੁ ਰੈਨਿ ਚਾਲਤ ॥ kaahoo bihaavai din rain chaalat | Some pass their lives walking day and night. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਕਾਹੂ ਬਿਹਾਵੈ ਸੋ ਪਿੜੁ ਮਾਲਤ ॥ kaahoo bihaavai so pirr maalat | Some pass their lives on the fields of battle. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਕਾਹੂ ਬਿਹਾਵੈ ਬਾਲ ਪੜਾਵਤ ॥ kaahoo bihaavai baal parraavat | Some pass their lives teaching children. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਸੰਤ ਬਿਹਾਵੈ ਹਰਿ ਜਸੁ ਗਾਵਤ ॥੫॥ sant bihaavai har jas gaavat |5| The Saints pass their lives singing the Lord’s Praise. ||5|| - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਕਾਹੂ ਬਿਹਾਵੈ ਨਟ ਨਾਟਿਕ ਨਿਰਤੇ ॥ kaahoo bihaavai natt naattik nirate | Some pass their lives as actors, acting and dancing. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਕਾਹੂ ਬਿਹਾਵੈ ਜੀਆਇਹ ਹਿਰਤੇ ॥ kaahoo bihaavai jeeaeih hirate | Some pass their lives taking the lives of others. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਕਾਹੂ ਬਿਹਾਵੈ ਰਾਜ ਮਹਿ ਡਰਤੇ ॥ kaahoo bihaavai raaj meh ddarate | Some pass their lives ruling by intimidation. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਸੰਤ ਬਿਹਾਵੈ ਹਰਿ ਜਸੁ ਕਰਤੇ ॥੬॥ sant bihaavai har jas karate |6| The Saints pass their lives chanting the Lord’s Praises. ||6|| - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਕਾਹੂ ਬਿਹਾਵੈ ਮਤਾ ਮਸੂਰਤਿ ॥ kaahoo bihaavai mataa masoorat | Some pass their lives counseling and giving advice. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਕਾਹੂ ਬਿਹਾਵੈ ਸੇਵਾ ਜਰੂਰਤਿ ॥ kaahoo bihaavai sevaa jaroorat | Some pass their lives forced to serve others. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਕਾਹੂ ਬਿਹਾਵੈ ਸੋਧਤ ਜੀਵਤ ॥ kaahoo bihaavai sodhat jeevat | Some pass their lives exploring life’s mysteries. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਸੰਤ ਬਿਹਾਵੈ ਹਰਿ ਰਸੁ ਪੀਵਤ ॥੭॥ sant bihaavai har ras peevat |7| The Saints pass their lives drinking in the sublime essence of the Lord. ||7|| - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਜਿਤੁ ਕੋ ਲਾਇਆ ਤਿਤ ਹੀ ਲਗਾਨਾ ॥ jit ko laaeaa tith hee lagaanaa | As the Lord attaches us, so we are attached. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਨਾ ਕੋ ਮੂੜੁ ਨਹੀ ਕੋ ਸਿਆਨਾ ॥ naa ko moorr nahee ko siaanaa | No one is foolish, and no one is wise. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਕਰਿ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਜਿਸੁ ਦੇਵੈ ਨਾਉ ॥ kar kirapaa jis devai naau | Nanak is a sacrifice, a sacrifice to those who are blessed - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਨਾਨਕ ਤਾ ਕੈ ਬਲਿ ਬਲਿ ਜਾਉ ॥੮॥੩॥ naanak taa kai bal bal jaau |8|3| By His Grace to receive His Name. ||8||3|| - Guru Arjan Dev Ji

ਦਾਵਾ ਅਗਨਿ ਰਹੇ ਹਰਿ ਬੂਟ ॥ daavaa agan rahe har boott | Even in a forest fire, some trees remain green. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਮਾਤ ਗਰਭ ਸੰਕਟ ਤੇ ਛੂਟ ॥ maat garabh sankatt te chhoott | The infant is released from the pain of the mother’s womb. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਜਾ ਕਾ ਨਾਮੁ ਸਿਮਰਤ ਭਉ ਜਾਇ ॥ jaa kaa naam simarat bhau jaae | Meditating in remembrance on the Naam, the Name of the Lord, fear is dispelled. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਤੈਸੇ ਸੰਤ ਜਨਾ ਰਾਖੈ ਹਰਿ ਰਾਇ ॥੧॥ taise sant janaa raakhai har raae |1| Just so, the Sovereign Lord protects and saves the Saints. ||1|| - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਐਸੇ ਰਾਖਨਹਾਰ ਦਇਆਲ ॥ aise raakhanahaar deaal | Such is the Merciful Lord, my Protector. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਜਤ ਕਤ ਦੇਖਉ ਤੁਮ ਪ੍ਰਤਿਪਾਲ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥ jat kat dekhau tum pratipaal |1| rahaau | Wherever I look, I see You cherishing and nurturing. ||1||Pause|| - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਜਲੁ ਪੀਵਤ ਜਿਉ ਤਿਖਾ ਮਿਟੰਤ ॥ jal peevat jiau tikhaa mittant | As thirst is quenched by drinking water; - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਧਨ ਬਿਗਸੈ ਗ੍ਰਿਹਿ ਆਵਤ ਕੰਤ ॥ dhan bigasai grihi aavat kant | as the bride blossoms forth when her husband comes home; - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਲੋਭੀ ਕਾ ਧਨੁ ਪ੍ਰਾਣ ਅਧਾਰੁ ॥ lobhee kaa dhan praan adhaar | as wealth is the support of the greedy person - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਤਿਉ ਹਰਿ ਜਨ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮ ਪਿਆਰੁ ॥੨॥ tiau har jan har har naam piaar |2|
- just so, the humble servant of the Lord loves the Name of the Lord, Har, Har. ||2|| - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਕਿਰਸਾਨੀ ਜਿਉ ਰਾਖੈ ਰਖਵਾਲਾ ॥ kirasaanee jiau raakhai rakhavaalaa | As the farmer protects his fields; - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਮਾਤ ਪਿਤਾ ਦਇਆ ਜਿਉ ਬਾਲਾ ॥ maat pitaa deaa jiau baalaa | as the mother and father show compassion to their child; - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਪ੍ਰੀਤਮੁ ਦੇਖਿ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਮੁ ਮਿਲਿ ਜਾਇ ॥ preetam dekh preetam mil jaae | as the lover merges on seeing the beloved; - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਤਿਉ ਹਰਿ ਜਨ ਰਾਖੈ ਕੰਠਿ ਲਾਇ ॥੩॥ tiau har jan raakhai kantth laae |3| just so does the Lord hug His humble servant close in His Embrace. ||3|| - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਜਿਉ ਅੰਧੁਲੇ ਪੇਖਤ ਹੋਇ ਅਨੰਦ ॥ jiau andhule pekhat hoe anand | As the blind man is in ecstasy, when he can see again; - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਗੂੰਗਾ ਬਕਤ ਗਾਵੈ ਬਹੁ ਛੰਦ ॥ goongaa bakat gaavai bahu chhand | and the mute, when he is able to speak and sing songs; - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਪਿੰਗੁਲ ਪਰਬਤ ਪਰਤੇ ਪਾਰਿ ॥ pingul parabat parate paar | and the cripple, being able to climb over the mountain - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਹਰਿ ਕੈ ਨਾਮਿ ਸਗਲ ਉਧਾਰਿ ॥੪॥ har kai naam sagal udhaar |4|
- just so, the Name of the Lord saves all. ||4|| - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਜਿਉ ਪਾਵਕ ਸੰਗਿ ਸੀਤ ਕੋ ਨਾਸ ॥ jiau paavak sang seet ko naas | As cold is dispelled by fire, - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਐਸੇ ਪ੍ਰਾਛਤ ਸੰਤਸੰਗਿ ਬਿਨਾਸ ॥ aise praachhat santasang binaas | sins are driven out in the Society of the Saints. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਜਿਉ ਸਾਬੁਨਿ ਕਾਪਰ ਊਜਲ ਹੋਤ ॥ jiau saabun kaapar aoojal hot | As cloth is cleaned by soap, - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਨਾਮ ਜਪਤ ਸਭੁ ਭ੍ਰਮੁ ਭਉ ਖੋਤ ॥੫॥ naam japat sabh bhram bhau khot |5| just so, by chanting the Naam, all doubts and fears are dispelled. ||5|| - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਜਿਉ ਚਕਵੀ ਸੂਰਜ ਕੀ ਆਸ ॥ jiau chakavee sooraj kee aas | As the chakvi bird longs for the sun, - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਜਿਉ ਚਾਤ੍ਰਿਕ ਬੂੰਦ ਕੀ ਪਿਆਸ ॥ jiau chaatrik boond kee piaas | as the rainbird thirsts for the rain drop, - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਜਿਉ ਕੁਰੰਕ ਨਾਦ ਕਰਨ ਸਮਾਨੇ ॥ jiau kurank naad karan samaane | as the deer’s ears are attuned to the sound of the bell, - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਤਿਉ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮ ਹਰਿ ਜਨ ਮਨਹਿ ਸੁਖਾਨੇ ॥੬॥ tiau har naam har jan maneh sukhaane |6| the Lord’s Name is pleasing to the mind of the Lord’s humble servant. ||6|| - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
