ਆਖੁ ਗੁਣਾ ਕਲਿ ਆਈਐ ॥ aakh gunaa kal aaeeai | Chant the Praises of the Lord; Kali Yuga has come. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਤਿਹੁ ਜੁਗ ਕੇਰਾ ਰਹਿਆ ਤਪਾਵਸੁ ਜੇ ਗੁਣ ਦੇਹਿ ਤ ਪਾਈਐ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥ tihu jug keraa rahiaa tapaavas je gun dehi ta paaeeai |1| rahaau | The justice of the previous three ages is gone. One obtains virtue, only if the Lord bestows it. ||1||Pause|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਕਲਿ ਕਲਵਾਲੀ ਸਰਾ ਨਿਬੇੜੀ ਕਾਜੀ ਕ੍ਰਿਸਨਾ ਹੋਆ ॥ kal kalavaalee saraa niberree kaajee krisanaa hoaa | In this turbulent age of Kali Yuga, Muslim law decides the cases, and the blue-robed Qazi is the judge. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਬਾਣੀ ਬ੍ਰਹਮਾ ਬੇਦੁ ਅਥਰਬਣੁ ਕਰਣੀ ਕੀਰਤਿ ਲਹਿਆ ॥੫॥ baanee brahamaa bed atharaban karanee keerat lahiaa |5| The Guru’s Bani has taken the place of Brahma’s Veda, and the singing of the Lord’s Praises are good deeds. ||5|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਪਤਿ ਵਿਣੁ ਪੂਜਾ ਸਤ ਵਿਣੁ ਸੰਜਮੁ ਜਤ ਵਿਣੁ ਕਾਹੇ ਜਨੇਊ ॥ pat vin poojaa sat vin sanjam jat vin kaahe janeaoo | Worship without faith; self-discipline without truthfulness; the ritual of the sacred thread without chastity - what good are these? - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਨਾਵਹੁ ਧੋਵਹੁ ਤਿਲਕੁ ਚੜਾਵਹੁ ਸੁਚ ਵਿਣੁ ਸੋਚ ਨ ਹੋਈ ॥੬॥ naavahu dhovahu tilak charraavahu such vin soch na hoee |6| You may bathe and wash, and apply a ritualistic tilak mark to your forehead, but without inner purity, there is no understanding. ||6|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਕਲਿ ਪਰਵਾਣੁ ਕਤੇਬ ਕੁਰਾਣੁ ॥ kal paravaan kateb kuraan | In Kali Yuga, the Koran and the Bible have become famous. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਪੋਥੀ ਪੰਡਿਤ ਰਹੇ ਪੁਰਾਣ ॥ pothee panddit rahe puraan | The Pandit’s scriptures and the Puraanas are not respected. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਨਾਨਕ ਨਾਉ ਭਇਆ ਰਹਮਾਣੁ ॥ naanak naau bheaa rahamaan | O Nanak, the Lord’s Name now is Rehmaan, the Merciful. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਕਰਿ ਕਰਤਾ ਤੂ ਏਕੋ ਜਾਣੁ ॥੭॥ kar karataa too eko jaan |7| Know that there is only One Creator of the creation. ||7|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਨਾਨਕ ਨਾਮੁ ਮਿਲੈ ਵਡਿਆਈ ਏਦੂ ਉਪਰਿ ਕਰਮੁ ਨਹੀ ॥ naanak naam milai vaddiaaee edoo upar karam nahee | Nanak has obtained the glorious greatness of the Naam, the Name of the Lord. There is no action higher than this. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਜੇ ਘਰਿ ਹੋਦੈ ਮੰਗਣਿ ਜਾਈਐ ਫਿਰਿ ਓਲਾਮਾ ਮਿਲੈ ਤਹੀ ॥੮॥੧॥ je ghar hodai mangan jaaeeai fir olaamaa milai tahee |8|1| If someone goes out to beg for what is already in his own home, then he should be chastised. ||8||1|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji

ਜਗੁ ਪਰਬੋਧਹਿ ਮੜੀ ਬਧਾਵਹਿ ॥ jag parabodheh marree badhaaveh | You preach to the world, and set up your house. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਆਸਣੁ ਤਿਆਗਿ ਕਾਹੇ ਸਚੁ ਪਾਵਹਿ ॥ aasan tiaag kaahe sach paaveh | Abandoning your Yogic postures, how will you find the True Lord? - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਮਮਤਾ ਮੋਹੁ ਕਾਮਣਿ ਹਿਤਕਾਰੀ ॥ mamataa mohu kaaman hitakaaree | You are attached to possessiveness and the love of sexual pleasure. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਨਾ ਅਉਧੂਤੀ ਨਾ ਸੰਸਾਰੀ ॥੧॥ naa aaudhootee naa sansaaree |1| You are not a renunciate, nor a man of the world. ||1|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਜੋਗੀ ਬੈਸਿ ਰਹਹੁ ਦੁਬਿਧਾ ਦੁਖੁ ਭਾਗੈ ॥ jogee bais rahahu dubidhaa dukh bhaagai | Yogi, remain seated, and the pain of duality will run away from you. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਘਰਿ ਘਰਿ ਮਾਗਤ ਲਾਜ ਨ ਲਾਗੈ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥ ghar ghar maagat laaj na laagai |1| rahaau | You beg from door to door, and you don’t feel ashamed. ||1||Pause|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਗਾਵਹਿ ਗੀਤ ਨ ਚੀਨਹਿ ਆਪੁ ॥ gaaveh geet na cheeneh aap | You sing the songs, but you do not understand your own self. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਕਿਉ ਲਾਗੀ ਨਿਵਰੈ ਪਰਤਾਪੁ ॥ kiau laagee nivarai parataap | How will the burning pain within be relieved? - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਗੁਰ ਕੈ ਸਬਦਿ ਰਚੈ ਮਨ ਭਾਇ ॥ gur kai sabad rachai man bhaae | Through the Word of the Guru’s Shabad, let your mind be absorbed in the Lord’s Love, - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਭਿਖਿਆ ਸਹਜ ਵੀਚਾਰੀ ਖਾਇ ॥੨॥ bhikhiaa sehaj veechaaree khaae |2| and you will intuitively experience the charity of contemplation. ||2|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਭਸਮ ਚੜਾਇ ਕਰਹਿ ਪਾਖੰਡੁ ॥ bhasam charraae kareh paakhandd | You apply ashes to your body, while acting in hypocrisy. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਮਾਇਆ ਮੋਹਿ ਸਹਹਿ ਜਮ ਡੰਡੁ ॥ maaeaa mohi saheh jam ddandd | Attached to Maya, you will be beaten by Death’s heavy club. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਫੂਟੈ ਖਾਪਰੁ ਭੀਖ ਨ ਭਾਇ ॥ foottai khaapar bheekh na bhaae | Your begging bowl is broken; it will not hold the charity of the Lord’s Love. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਬੰਧਨਿ ਬਾਧਿਆ ਆਵੈ ਜਾਇ ॥੩॥ bandhan baadhiaa aavai jaae |3| Bound in bondage, you come and go. ||3|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਬਿੰਦੁ ਨ ਰਾਖਹਿ ਜਤੀ ਕਹਾਵਹਿ ॥ bind na raakheh jatee kahaaveh | You do not control your seed and semen, and yet you claim to practice abstinence. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਮਾਈ ਮਾਗਤ ਤ੍ਰੈ ਲੋਭਾਵਹਿ ॥ maaee maagat trai lobhaaveh | You beg from Maya, lured by the three qualities. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਨਿਰਦਇਆ ਨਹੀ ਜੋਤਿ ਉਜਾਲਾ ॥ niradeaa nahee jot ujaalaa | You have no compassion; the Lord’s Light does not shine in you. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਬੂਡਤ ਬੂਡੇ ਸਰਬ ਜੰਜਾਲਾ ॥੪॥ booddat boodde sarab janjaalaa |4| You are drowned, drowned in worldly entanglements. ||4|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਭੇਖ ਕਰਹਿ ਖਿੰਥਾ ਬਹੁ ਥਟੂਆ ॥ bhekh kareh khinthaa bahu thattooaa | You wear religious robes, and your patched coat assumes many disguises. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਝੂਠੋ ਖੇਲੁ ਖੇਲੈ ਬਹੁ ਨਟੂਆ ॥ jhoottho khel khelai bahu nattooaa | You play all sorts of false tricks, like a juggler. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਅੰਤਰਿ ਅਗਨਿ ਚਿੰਤਾ ਬਹੁ ਜਾਰੇ ॥ antar agan chintaa bahu jaare | The fire of anxiety burns brightly within you. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਵਿਣੁ ਕਰਮਾ ਕੈਸੇ ਉਤਰਸਿ ਪਾਰੇ ॥੫॥ vin karamaa kaise utaras paare |5| Without the karma of good actions, how can you cross over? ||5|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਮੁੰਦ੍ਰਾ ਫਟਕ ਬਨਾਈ ਕਾਨਿ ॥ mundraa fattak banaaee kaan | You make ear-rings of glass to wear in your ears. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਮੁਕਤਿ ਨਹੀ ਬਿਦਿਆ ਬਿਗਿਆਨਿ ॥ mukat nahee bidiaa bigiaan | But liberation does not come from learning without understanding. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਜਿਹਵਾ ਇੰਦ੍ਰੀ ਸਾਦਿ ਲੋੁਭਾਨਾ ॥ jihavaa indree saad luobhaanaa | You are lured by the tastes of the tongue and sex organs. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਪਸੂ ਭਏ ਨਹੀ ਮਿਟੈ ਨੀਸਾਨਾ ॥੬॥ pasoo bhe nahee mittai neesaanaa |6| You have become a beast; this sign cannot be erased. ||6|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਤ੍ਰਿਬਿਧਿ ਲੋਗਾ ਤ੍ਰਿਬਿਧਿ ਜੋਗਾ ॥ tribidh logaa tribidh jogaa | The people of the world are entangled in the three modes; the Yogis are entangled in the three modes. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਸਬਦੁ ਵੀਚਾਰੈ ਚੂਕਸਿ ਸੋਗਾ ॥ sabad veechaarai chookas sogaa | Contemplating the Word of the Shabad, sorrows are dispelled. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਊਜਲੁ ਸਾਚੁ ਸੁ ਸਬਦੁ ਹੋਇ ॥ aoojal saach su sabad hoe | Through the Shabad, one becomes radiant, pure and truthful. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਜੋਗੀ ਜੁਗਤਿ ਵੀਚਾਰੇ ਸੋਇ ॥੭॥ jogee jugat veechaare soe |7| One who contemplates the true lifestyle is a Yogi. ||7|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਤੁਝ ਪਹਿ ਨਉ ਨਿਧਿ ਤੂ ਕਰਣੈ ਜੋਗੁ ॥ tujh peh nau nidh too karanai jog | The nine treasures are with You, Lord; You are potent, the Cause of causes. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਥਾਪਿ ਉਥਾਪੇ ਕਰੇ ਸੁ ਹੋਗੁ ॥ thaap uthaape kare su hog | You establish and disestablish; whatever You do, happens. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਜਤੁ ਸਤੁ ਸੰਜਮੁ ਸਚੁ ਸੁਚੀਤੁ ॥ jat sat sanjam sach sucheet | One who practices celibacy, chastity, self-control, truth and pure consciousness - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਨਾਨਕ ਜੋਗੀ ਤ੍ਰਿਭਵਣ ਮੀਤੁ ॥੮॥੨॥ naanak jogee tribhavan meet |8|2|

ਖਟੁ ਮਟੁ ਦੇਹੀ ਮਨੁ ਬੈਰਾਗੀ ॥ khatt matt dehee man bairaagee | Above the six chakras of the body dwells the detached mind. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਸੁਰਤਿ ਸਬਦੁ ਧੁਨਿ ਅੰਤਰਿ ਜਾਗੀ ॥ surat sabad dhun antar jaagee | Awareness of the vibration of the Word of the Shabad has been awakened deep within. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਵਾਜੈ ਅਨਹਦੁ ਮੇਰਾ ਮਨੁ ਲੀਣਾ ॥ vaajai anahad meraa man leenaa | The unstruck melody of the sound current resonates and resounds within; my mind is attuned to it. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਗੁਰ ਬਚਨੀ ਸਚਿ ਨਾਮਿ ਪਤੀਣਾ ॥੧॥ gur bachanee sach naam pateenaa |1| Through the Guru’s Teachings, my faith is confirmed in the True Name. ||1|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਪ੍ਰਾਣੀ ਰਾਮ ਭਗਤਿ ਸੁਖੁ ਪਾਈਐ ॥ praanee raam bhagat sukh paaeeai | O mortal, through devotion to the Lord, peace is obtained. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਮੀਠਾ ਲਾਗੈ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮਿ ਸਮਾਈਐ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥ guramukh har har meetthaa laagai har har naam samaaeeai |1| rahaau | The Lord, Har, Har, seems sweet to the Gurmukh, who merges in the Name of the Lord, Har, Har. ||1||Pause|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
