ਬਿਲਾਵਲੁ ਮਹਲਾ ੧ ॥ bilaaval mahalaa 1 | Bilaaval, First Mehl: - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਮਨ ਕਾ ਕਹਿਆ ਮਨਸਾ ਕਰੈ ॥ man kaa kahiaa manasaa karai | The human acts according to the wishes of the mind. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਇਹੁ ਮਨੁ ਪੁੰਨੁ ਪਾਪੁ ਉਚਰੈ ॥ eihu man pun paap ucharai | This mind feeds on virtue and vice. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਮਾਇਆ ਮਦਿ ਮਾਤੇ ਤ੍ਰਿਪਤਿ ਨ ਆਵੈ ॥ maaeaa mad maate tripat na aavai | Intoxicated with the wine of Maya, satisfaction never comes. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਤ੍ਰਿਪਤਿ ਮੁਕਤਿ ਮਨਿ ਸਾਚਾ ਭਾਵੈ ॥੧॥ tripat mukat man saachaa bhaavai |1| Satisfaction and liberation come, only to one whose mind is pleasing to the True Lord. ||1|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਤਨੁ ਧਨੁ ਕਲਤੁ ਸਭੁ ਦੇਖੁ ਅਭਿਮਾਨਾ ॥ tan dhan kalat sabh dekh abhimaanaa | Gazing upon his body, wealth, wife and all his possessions, he is proud. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਬਿਨੁ ਨਾਵੈ ਕਿਛੁ ਸੰਗਿ ਨ ਜਾਨਾ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥ bin naavai kichh sang na jaanaa |1| rahaau | But without the Name of the Lord, nothing shall go along with him. ||1||Pause|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਕੀਚਹਿ ਰਸ ਭੋਗ ਖੁਸੀਆ ਮਨ ਕੇਰੀ ॥ keecheh ras bhog khuseea man keree | He enjoys tastes, pleasures and joys in his mind. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਧਨੁ ਲੋਕਾਂ ਤਨੁ ਭਸਮੈ ਢੇਰੀ ॥ dhan lokaan tan bhasamai dteree | But his wealth will pass on to other people, and his body will be reduced to ashes. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਖਾਕੂ ਖਾਕੁ ਰਲੈ ਸਭੁ ਫੈਲੁ ॥ khaakoo khaak ralai sabh fail | The entire expanse, like dust, shall mix with dust. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਬਿਨੁ ਸਬਦੈ ਨਹੀ ਉਤਰੈ ਮੈਲੁ ॥੨॥ bin sabadai nahee utarai mail |2| Without the Word of the Shabad, his filth is not removed. ||2|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਗੀਤ ਰਾਗ ਘਨ ਤਾਲ ਸਿ ਕੂਰੇ ॥ geet raag ghan taal si koore | The various songs, tunes and rhythms are false. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਤ੍ਰਿਹੁ ਗੁਣ ਉਪਜੈ ਬਿਨਸੈ ਦੂਰੇ ॥ trihu gun upajai binasai doore | Trapped by the three qualities, people come and go, far from the Lord. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਦੂਜੀ ਦੁਰਮਤਿ ਦਰਦੁ ਨ ਜਾਇ ॥ doojee duramat darad na jaae | In duality, the pain of their evil-mindedness does not leave them. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਛੂਟੈ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਦਾਰੂ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਇ ॥੩॥ chhoottai guramukh daaroo gun gaae |3| But the Gurmukh is emancipated by taking the medicine, and singing the Glorious Praises of the Lord. ||3|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਧੋਤੀ ਊਜਲ ਤਿਲਕੁ ਗਲਿ ਮਾਲਾ ॥ dhotee aoojal tilak gal maalaa | He may wear a clean loin-cloth, apply the ceremonial mark to his forehead, and wear a mala around his neck; - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਅੰਤਰਿ ਕ੍ਰੋਧੁ ਪੜਹਿ ਨਾਟ ਸਾਲਾ ॥ antar krodh parreh naatt saalaa | but if there is anger within him, he is merely reading his part, like an actor in a play. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਨਾਮੁ ਵਿਸਾਰਿ ਮਾਇਆ ਮਦੁ ਪੀਆ ॥ naam visaar maaeaa mad peea | Forgetting the Naam, the Name of the Lord, he drinks in the wine of Maya. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਬਿਨੁ ਗੁਰ ਭਗਤਿ ਨਾਹੀ ਸੁਖੁ ਥੀਆ ॥੪॥ bin gur bhagat naahee sukh theea |4| Without devotional worship to the Guru, there is no peace. ||4|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਸੂਕਰ ਸੁਆਨ ਗਰਧਭ ਮੰਜਾਰਾ ॥ sookar suaan garadhabh manjaaraa | The human is a pig, a dog, a donkey, a cat, - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਪਸੂ ਮਲੇਛ ਨੀਚ ਚੰਡਾਲਾ ॥ pasoo malechh neech chanddaalaa | a beast, a filthy, lowly wretch, an outcast, - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਗੁਰ ਤੇ ਮੁਹੁ ਫੇਰੇ ਤਿਨੑ ਜੋਨਿ ਭਵਾਈਐ ॥ gur te muhu fere tina jon bhavaaeeai | if he turns his face away from the Guru. He shall wander in reincarnation. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਬੰਧਨਿ ਬਾਧਿਆ ਆਈਐ ਜਾਈਐ ॥੫॥ bandhan baadhiaa aaeeai jaaeeai |5| Bound in bondage, he comes and goes. ||5|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਗੁਰ ਸੇਵਾ ਤੇ ਲਹੈ ਪਦਾਰਥੁ ॥ gur sevaa te lahai padaarath | Serving the Guru, the treasure is found. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਹਿਰਦੈ ਨਾਮੁ ਸਦਾ ਕਿਰਤਾਰਥੁ ॥ hiradai naam sadaa kirataarath | With the Naam in the heart, one always prospers. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਸਾਚੀ ਦਰਗਹ ਪੂਛ ਨ ਹੋਇ ॥ saachee daragah poochh na hoe | And in the Court of the True Lord, you shall not called to account. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਮਾਨੇ ਹੁਕਮੁ ਸੀਝੈ ਦਰਿ ਸੋਇ ॥੬॥ maane hukam seejhai dar soe |6| One who obeys the Hukam of the Lord’s Command, is approved at the Lord’s Door. ||6|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਮਿਲੈ ਤ ਤਿਸ ਕਉ ਜਾਣੈ ॥ satigur milai ta tis kau jaanai | Meeting the True Guru, one knows the Lord. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਰਹੈ ਰਜਾਈ ਹੁਕਮੁ ਪਛਾਣੈ ॥ rahai rajaaee hukam pachhaanai | Understanding the Hukam of His Command, one acts according to His Will. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਹੁਕਮੁ ਪਛਾਣਿ ਸਚੈ ਦਰਿ ਵਾਸੁ ॥ hukam pachhaan sachai dar vaas | Understanding the Hukam of His Command, he dwells in the Court of the True Lord. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਕਾਲ ਬਿਕਾਲ ਸਬਦਿ ਭਏ ਨਾਸੁ ॥੭॥ kaal bikaal sabad bhe naas |7| Through the Shabad, death and birth are ended. ||7|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਰਹੈ ਅਤੀਤੁ ਜਾਣੈ ਸਭੁ ਤਿਸ ਕਾ ॥ rahai ateet jaanai sabh tis kaa | He remains detached, knowing that everything belongs to God. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਤਨੁ ਮਨੁ ਅਰਪੈ ਹੈ ਇਹੁ ਜਿਸ ਕਾ ॥ tan man arapai hai ihu jis kaa | He dedicates his body and mind unto the One who owns them. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਨਾ ਓਹੁ ਆਵੈ ਨਾ ਓਹੁ ਜਾਇ ॥ naa ohu aavai naa ohu jaae | He does not come, and he does not go. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਨਾਨਕ ਸਾਚੇ ਸਾਚਿ ਸਮਾਇ ॥੮॥੨॥ naanak saache saach samaae |8|2| O Nanak, absorbed in Truth, he merges in the True Lord. ||8||2|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji

ੴ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਪ੍ਰਸਾਦਿ ॥ ik oankaar satigur prasaad | One Universal Creator God. By The Grace Of The True Guru: - Guru Amardas Ji
ਜਗੁ ਕਊਆ ਮੁਖਿ ਚੁੰਚ ਗਿਆਨੁ ॥ jag kaooaa mukh chunch giaan | The world is like a crow; with its beak, it croaks spiritual wisdom. - Guru Amardas Ji
ਅੰਤਰਿ ਲੋਭੁ ਝੂਠੁ ਅਭਿਮਾਨੁ ॥ antar lobh jhootth abhimaan | But deep within there is greed, falsehood and pride. - Guru Amardas Ji
ਬਿਨੁ ਨਾਵੈ ਪਾਜੁ ਲਹਗੁ ਨਿਦਾਨਿ ॥੧॥ bin naavai paaj lehag nidaan |1| Without the Name of the Lord, your thin outer covering shall wear off, you fool. ||1|| - Guru Amardas Ji
ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਸੇਵਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਵਸੈ ਮਨਿ ਚੀਤਿ ॥ satigur sev naam vasai man cheet | Serving the True Guru, the Naam shall dwell in your conscious mind. - Guru Amardas Ji
ਗੁਰੁ ਭੇਟੇ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਚੇਤਾਵੈ ਬਿਨੁ ਨਾਵੈ ਹੋਰ ਝੂਠੁ ਪਰੀਤਿ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥ gur bhette har naam chetaavai bin naavai hor jhootth pareet |1| rahaau | Meeting with the Guru, the Name of the Lord comes to mind. Without the Name, other loves are false. ||1||Pause|| - Guru Amardas Ji
ਗੁਰਿ ਕਹਿਆ ਸਾ ਕਾਰ ਕਮਾਵਹੁ ॥ gur kahiaa saa kaar kamaavahu | So do that work, which the Guru tells you to do. - Guru Amardas Ji
ਸਬਦੁ ਚੀਨਿੑ ਸਹਜ ਘਰਿ ਆਵਹੁ ॥ sabad cheena sehaj ghar aavahu | Contemplating the Word of the Shabad, you shall come to the home of celestial bliss. - Guru Amardas Ji
ਸਾਚੈ ਨਾਇ ਵਡਾਈ ਪਾਵਹੁ ॥੨॥ saachai naae vaddaaee paavahu |2| Through the True Name, you shall obtain glorious greatness. ||2|| - Guru Amardas Ji
ਆਪਿ ਨ ਬੂਝੈ ਲੋਕ ਬੁਝਾਵੈ ॥ aap na boojhai lok bujhaavai | One who does not understand his own self, but still tries to instruct others, - Guru Amardas Ji
ਮਨ ਕਾ ਅੰਧਾ ਅੰਧੁ ਕਮਾਵੈ ॥ man kaa andhaa andh kamaavai | is mentally blind, and acts in blindness. - Guru Amardas Ji
ਦਰੁ ਘਰੁ ਮਹਲੁ ਠਉਰੁ ਕੈਸੇ ਪਾਵੈ ॥੩॥ dar ghar mehal tthaur kaise paavai |3| How can he ever find a home and a place of rest, in the Mansion of the Lord’s Presence? ||3|| - Guru Amardas Ji
ਹਰਿ ਜੀਉ ਸੇਵੀਐ ਅੰਤਰਜਾਮੀ ॥ har jeeo seveeai antarajaamee | Serve the Dear Lord, the Inner-knower, the Searcher of hearts; - Guru Amardas Ji
ਘਟ ਘਟ ਅੰਤਰਿ ਜਿਸ ਕੀ ਜੋਤਿ ਸਮਾਨੀ ॥ ghatt ghatt antar jis kee jot samaanee | deep within each and every heart, His Light is shining forth. - Guru Amardas Ji
ਤਿਸੁ ਨਾਲਿ ਕਿਆ ਚਲੈ ਪਹਨਾਮੀ ॥੪॥ tis naal kiaa chalai pahanaamee |4| How can anyone hide anything from Him? ||4|| - Guru Amardas Ji
