ਜਗਤ ਉਧਾਰਨ ਸਾਧ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਤਿਨੑ ਲਾਗਹੁ ਪਾਲ ॥ jagat udhaaran saadh prabh tina laagahu paal | God’s Holy people are the saviors of the world; I grab hold of the hem of their robes. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਮੋ ਕਉ ਦੀਜੈ ਦਾਨੁ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਸੰਤਨ ਪਗ ਰਾਲ ॥੨॥ mo kau deejai daan prabh santan pag raal |2| Bless me, O God, with the gift of the dust of the feet of the Saints. ||2|| - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਉਕਤਿ ਸਿਆਨਪ ਕਛੁ ਨਹੀ ਨਾਹੀ ਕਛੁ ਘਾਲ ॥ aukat siaanap kachh nahee naahee kachh ghaal | I have no skill or wisdom at all, nor any work to my credit. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਭ੍ਰਮ ਭੈ ਰਾਖਹੁ ਮੋਹ ਤੇ ਕਾਟਹੁ ਜਮ ਜਾਲ ॥੩॥ bhram bhai raakhahu moh te kaattahu jam jaal |3| Please, protect me from doubt, fear and emotional attachment, and cut away the noose of Death from my neck. ||3|| - Guru Arjan Dev Ji

ਕੀਤਾ ਲੋੜਹਿ ਸੋ ਕਰਹਿ ਤੁਝ ਬਿਨੁ ਕਛੁ ਨਾਹਿ ॥ keetaa lorreh so kareh tujh bin kachh naeh | Whatever You wish, You do. Without You, there is nothing. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਪਰਤਾਪੁ ਤੁਮੑਾਰਾ ਦੇਖਿ ਕੈ ਜਮਦੂਤ ਛਡਿ ਜਾਹਿ ॥੧॥ parataap tumaaraa dekh kai jamadoot chhadd jaeh |1| Gazing upon Your Glory, the Messenger of Death leaves and goes away. ||1|| - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਤੁਮੑਰੀ ਕ੍ਰਿਪਾ ਤੇ ਛੂਟੀਐ ਬਿਨਸੈ ਅਹੰਮੇਵ ॥ tumaree kripaa te chhootteeai binasai ahamev | By Your Grace, one is emancipated, and egotism is dispelled. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਸਰਬ ਕਲਾ ਸਮਰਥ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਪੂਰੇ ਗੁਰਦੇਵ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥ sarab kalaa samarath prabh poore guradev |1| rahaau | God is omnipotent, possessing all powers; He is obtained through the Perfect, Divine Guru. ||1||Pause|| - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਖੋਜਤ ਖੋਜਤ ਖੋਜਿਆ ਨਾਮੈ ਬਿਨੁ ਕੂਰੁ ॥ khojat khojat khojiaa naamai bin koor | Searching, searching, searching - without the Naam, everything is false. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਜੀਵਨ ਸੁਖੁ ਸਭੁ ਸਾਧਸੰਗਿ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਮਨਸਾ ਪੂਰੁ ॥੨॥ jeevan sukh sabh saadhasang prabh manasaa poor |2| All the comforts of life are found in the Saadh Sangat, the Company of the Holy; God is the Fulfiller of desires. ||2|| - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਜਿਤੁ ਜਿਤੁ ਲਾਵਹੁ ਤਿਤੁ ਤਿਤੁ ਲਗਹਿ ਸਿਆਨਪ ਸਭ ਜਾਲੀ ॥ jit jit laavahu tith tit lageh siaanap sabh jaalee | Whatever You attach me to, to that I am attached; I have burnt away all my cleverness. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਜਤ ਕਤ ਤੁਮੑ ਭਰਪੂਰ ਹਹੁ ਮੇਰੇ ਦੀਨ ਦਇਆਲੀ ॥੩॥ jat kat tuma bharapoor hahu mere deen deaalee |3| You are permeating and pervading everywhere, O my Lord, Merciful to the meek. ||3|| - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਸਭੁ ਕਿਛੁ ਤੁਮ ਤੇ ਮਾਗਨਾ ਵਡਭਾਗੀ ਪਾਏ ॥ sabh kichh tum te maaganaa vaddabhaagee paae | I ask for everything from You, but only the very fortunate ones obtain it. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਨਾਨਕ ਕੀ ਅਰਦਾਸਿ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਜੀਵਾ ਗੁਨ ਗਾਏ ॥੪॥੧੨॥੪੨॥ naanak kee aradaas prabh jeevaa gun gaae |4|12|42| This is Nanak’s prayer, O God, I live by singing Your Glorious Praises. ||4||12||42|| - Guru Arjan Dev Ji

ਪ੍ਰਭ ਸੇਤੀ ਰੰਗਿ ਰਾਤਿਆ ਤਾ ਤੇ ਗਰਭਿ ਨ ਗ੍ਰਸਨਾ ॥੧॥ prabh setee rang raatiaa taa te garabh na grasanaa |1| One who is attuned to the Love of God, is not cast into the womb of reincarnation. ||1|| - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਨਾਮੁ ਕਹਤ ਗੋਵਿੰਦ ਕਾ ਸੂਚੀ ਭਈ ਰਸਨਾ ॥ naam kehat govind kaa soochee bhee rasanaa | Chanting the Name of the Lord of the Universe, the tongue becomes holy. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਮਨ ਤਨ ਨਿਰਮਲ ਹੋਈ ਹੈ ਗੁਰ ਕਾ ਜਪੁ ਜਪਨਾ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥ man tan niramal hoee hai gur kaa jap japanaa |1| rahaau | The mind and body become immaculate and pure, chanting the Chant of the Guru. ||1||Pause|| - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਹਰਿ ਰਸੁ ਚਾਖਤ ਧ੍ਰਾਪਿਆ ਮਨਿ ਰਸੁ ਲੈ ਹਸਨਾ ॥ har ras chaakhat dhraapiaa man ras lai hasanaa | Tasting the subtle essence of the Lord, one is satisfied; receiving this essence, the mind becomes happy. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਬੁਧਿ ਪ੍ਰਗਾਸ ਪ੍ਰਗਟ ਭਈ ਉਲਟਿ ਕਮਲੁ ਬਿਗਸਨਾ ॥੨॥ budh pragaas pragatt bhee ulatt kamal bigasanaa |2| The intellect is brightened and illuminated; turning away from the world, the heart-lotus blossoms forth. ||2|| - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਸੀਤਲ ਸਾਂਤਿ ਸੰਤੋਖੁ ਹੋਇ ਸਭ ਬੂਝੀ ਤ੍ਰਿਸਨਾ ॥ seetal saant santokh hoe sabh boojhee trisanaa | He is cooled and soothed, peaceful and content; all his thirst is quenched. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਦਹ ਦਿਸ ਧਾਵਤ ਮਿਟਿ ਗਏ ਨਿਰਮਲ ਥਾਨਿ ਬਸਨਾ ॥੩॥ deh dis dhaavat mitt ge niramal thaan basanaa |3| The mind’s wandering in the ten directions is stopped, and one dwells in the immaculate place. ||3|| - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਰਾਖਨਹਾਰੈ ਰਾਖਿਆ ਭਏ ਭ੍ਰਮ ਭਸਨਾ ॥ raakhanahaarai raakhiaa bhe bhram bhasanaa | The Savior Lord saves him, and his doubts are burnt to ashes. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਨਾਮੁ ਨਿਧਾਨ ਨਾਨਕ ਸੁਖੀ ਪੇਖਿ ਸਾਧ ਦਰਸਨਾ ॥੪॥੧੩॥੪੩॥ naam nidhaan naanak sukhee pekh saadh darasanaa |4|13|43| Nanak is blessed with the treasure of the Naam, the Name of the Lord. He finds peace, gazing upon the Blessed Vision of the Saints’ Darshan. ||4||13||43|| - Guru Arjan Dev Ji

ਪਾਣੀ ਪਖਾ ਪੀਸੁ ਦਾਸ ਕੈ ਤਬ ਹੋਹਿ ਨਿਹਾਲੁ ॥ paanee pakhaa pees daas kai tab hohi nihaal | Carry water for the Lord’s slave, wave the fan over him, and grind his corn; then, you shall be happy. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਰਾਜ ਮਿਲਖ ਸਿਕਦਾਰੀਆ ਅਗਨੀ ਮਹਿ ਜਾਲੁ ॥੧॥ raaj milakh sikadaareea aganee meh jaal |1| Burn in the fire your power, property and authority. ||1|| - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਸੰਤ ਜਨਾ ਕਾ ਛੋਹਰਾ ਤਿਸੁ ਚਰਣੀ ਲਾਗਿ ॥ sant janaa kaa chhoharaa tis charanee laag | Grasp hold of the feet of the servant of the humble Saints. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਮਾਇਆਧਾਰੀ ਛਤ੍ਰਪਤਿ ਤਿਨੑ ਛੋਡਉ ਤਿਆਗਿ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥ maaeaadhaaree chhatrapat tina chhoddau tiaag |1| rahaau | Renounce and abandon the wealthy, the regal overlords and kings. ||1||Pause|| - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਸੰਤਨ ਕਾ ਦਾਨਾ ਰੂਖਾ ਸੋ ਸਰਬ ਨਿਧਾਨ ॥ santan kaa daanaa rookhaa so sarab nidhaan | The dry bread of the Saints is equal to all treasures. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਗ੍ਰਿਹਿ ਸਾਕਤ ਛਤੀਹ ਪ੍ਰਕਾਰ ਤੇ ਬਿਖੂ ਸਮਾਨ ॥੨॥ grihi saakat chhateeh prakaar te bikhoo samaan |2| The thirty-six tasty dishes of the faithless cynic, are just like poison. ||2|| - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਭਗਤ ਜਨਾ ਕਾ ਲੂਗਰਾ ਓਢਿ ਨਗਨ ਨ ਹੋਈ ॥ bhagat janaa kaa loogaraa odt nagan na hoee | Wearing the old blankets of the humble devotees, one is not naked. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਸਾਕਤ ਸਿਰਪਾਉ ਰੇਸਮੀ ਪਹਿਰਤ ਪਤਿ ਖੋਈ ॥੩॥ saakat sirapaau resamee pahirat pat khoee |3| But by putting on the silk clothes of the faithless cynic, one loses one’s honor. ||3|| - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਸਾਕਤ ਸਿਉ ਮੁਖਿ ਜੋਰਿਐ ਅਧ ਵੀਚਹੁ ਟੂਟੈ ॥ saakat siau mukh joriai adh veechahu ttoottai | Friendship with the faithless cynic breaks down mid-way. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਹਰਿ ਜਨ ਕੀ ਸੇਵਾ ਜੋ ਕਰੇ ਇਤ ਊਤਹਿ ਛੂਟੈ ॥੪॥ har jan kee sevaa jo kare it aooteh chhoottai |4| But whoever serves the humble servants of the Lord, is emancipated here and hereafter. ||4|| - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਸਭ ਕਿਛੁ ਤੁਮੑ ਹੀ ਤੇ ਹੋਆ ਆਪਿ ਬਣਤ ਬਣਾਈ ॥ sabh kichh tuma hee te hoaa aap banat banaaee | Everything comes from You, O Lord; You Yourself created the creation. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
