ਐਸਾ ਨਾਮੁ ਨਿਰੰਜਨ ਦੇਉ ॥ aisaa naam niranjan deo | Such is the Name of the Immaculate, Divine Lord. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਹਉ ਜਾਚਿਕੁ ਤੂ ਅਲਖ ਅਭੇਉ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥ hau jaachik too alakh abheo |1| rahaau | I am just a beggar; You are invisible and unknowable. ||1||Pause|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਮਾਇਆ ਮੋਹੁ ਧਰਕਟੀ ਨਾਰਿ ॥ maaeaa mohu dharakattee naar | Love of Maya is like a cursed woman, - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਭੂੰਡੀ ਕਾਮਣਿ ਕਾਮਣਿਆਰਿ ॥ bhoonddee kaaman kaamaniaar | Ugly, dirty and promiscuous. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਰਾਜੁ ਰੂਪੁ ਝੂਠਾ ਦਿਨ ਚਾਰਿ ॥ raaj roop jhootthaa din chaar | Power and beauty are false, and last for only a few days. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਨਾਮੁ ਮਿਲੈ ਚਾਨਣੁ ਅੰਧਿਆਰਿ ॥੨॥ naam milai chaanan andhiaar |2| But when one is blessed with the Naam, the darkness within is illuminated. ||2|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਚਖਿ ਛੋਡੀ ਸਹਸਾ ਨਹੀ ਕੋਇ ॥ chakh chhoddee sahasaa nahee koe | I tasted Maya and renounced it, and now, I have no doubts. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਬਾਪੁ ਦਿਸੈ ਵੇਜਾਤਿ ਨ ਹੋਇ ॥ baap disai vejaat na hoe | One whose father is known, cannot be illegitimate. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਏਕੇ ਕਉ ਨਾਹੀ ਭਉ ਕੋਇ ॥ eke kau naahee bhau koe | One who belongs to the One Lord, has no fear. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਕਰਤਾ ਕਰੇ ਕਰਾਵੈ ਸੋਇ ॥੩॥ karataa kare karaavai soe |3| The Creator acts, and causes all to act. ||3|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਸਬਦਿ ਮੁਏ ਮਨੁ ਮਨ ਤੇ ਮਾਰਿਆ ॥ sabad mue man man te maariaa | One who dies in the Word of the Shabad conquers his mind, through his mind. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਠਾਕਿ ਰਹੇ ਮਨੁ ਸਾਚੈ ਧਾਰਿਆ ॥ tthaak rahe man saachai dhaariaa | Keeping his mind restrained, he enshrines the True Lord within his heart. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਅਵਰੁ ਨ ਸੂਝੈ ਗੁਰ ਕਉ ਵਾਰਿਆ ॥ avar na soojhai gur kau vaariaa | He does not know any other, and he is a sacrifice to the Guru. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਨਾਨਕ ਨਾਮਿ ਰਤੇ ਨਿਸਤਾਰਿਆ ॥੪॥੩॥ naanak naam rate nisataariaa |4|3| O Nanak, attuned to the Naam, he is emancipated. ||4||3|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji

ਗੁਰ ਬਚਨੀ ਮਨੁ ਸਹਜ ਧਿਆਨੇ ॥ gur bachanee man sehaj dhiaane | Through the Word of the Guru’s Teachings, the mind intuitively meditates on the Lord. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਹਰਿ ਕੈ ਰੰਗਿ ਰਤਾ ਮਨੁ ਮਾਨੇ ॥ har kai rang rataa man maane | Imbued with the Lord’s Love, the mind is satisfied. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਮਨਮੁਖ ਭਰਮਿ ਭੁਲੇ ਬਉਰਾਨੇ ॥ manamukh bharam bhule bauraane | The insane, self-willed manmukhs wander around, deluded by doubt. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਹਰਿ ਬਿਨੁ ਕਿਉ ਰਹੀਐ ਗੁਰ ਸਬਦਿ ਪਛਾਨੇ ॥੧॥ har bin kiau raheeai gur sabad pachhaane |1| Without the Lord, how can anyone survive? Through the Word of the Guru’s Shabad, He is realized. ||1|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਬਿਨੁ ਦਰਸਨ ਕੈਸੇ ਜੀਵਉ ਮੇਰੀ ਮਾਈ ॥ bin darasan kaise jeevau meree maaee | Without the Blessed Vision of His Darshan, how can I live, O my mother? - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਹਰਿ ਬਿਨੁ ਜੀਅਰਾ ਰਹਿ ਨ ਸਕੈ ਖਿਨੁ ਸਤਿਗੁਰਿ ਬੂਝ ਬੁਝਾਈ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥ har bin jeearaa reh na sakai khin satigur boojh bujhaaee |1| rahaau | Without the Lord, my soul cannot survive, even for an instant; the True Guru has helped me understand this. ||1||Pause|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਮੇਰਾ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਬਿਸਰੈ ਹਉ ਮਰਉ ਦੁਖਾਲੀ ॥ meraa prabh bisarai hau mrau dukhaalee | Forgetting my God, I die in pain. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਸਾਸਿ ਗਿਰਾਸਿ ਜਪਉ ਅਪੁਨੇ ਹਰਿ ਭਾਲੀ ॥ saas giraas jpau apune har bhaalee | With each breath and morsel of food, I meditate on my Lord, and seek Him. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਸਦ ਬੈਰਾਗਨਿ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਨਿਹਾਲੀ ॥ sad bairaagan har naam nihaalee | I remain always detached, but I am enraptured with the Lord’s Name. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਅਬ ਜਾਨੇ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਲੀ ॥੨॥ ab jaane guramukh har naalee |2| Now, as Gurmukh, I know that the Lord is always with me. ||2|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਅਕਥ ਕਥਾ ਕਹੀਐ ਗੁਰ ਭਾਇ ॥ akath kathaa kaheeai gur bhaae | The Unspoken Speech is spoken, by the Will of the Guru. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਅਗਮ ਅਗੋਚਰੁ ਦੇਇ ਦਿਖਾਇ ॥ prabh agam agochar dee dikhaae | He shows us that God is unapproachable and unfathomable. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਬਿਨੁ ਗੁਰ ਕਰਣੀ ਕਿਆ ਕਾਰ ਕਮਾਇ ॥ bin gur karanee kiaa kaar kamaae | Without the Guru, what lifestyle could we practice, and what work could we do? - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਹਉਮੈ ਮੇਟਿ ਚਲੈ ਗੁਰ ਸਬਦਿ ਸਮਾਇ ॥੩॥ haumai mett chalai gur sabad samaae |3| Eradicating egotism, and walking in harmony with the Guru’s Will, I am absorbed in the Word of the Shabad. ||3|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਮਨਮੁਖੁ ਵਿਛੁੜੈ ਖੋਟੀ ਰਾਸਿ ॥ manamukh vichhurrai khottee raas | The self-willed manmukhs are separated from the Lord, gathering false wealth. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਨਾਮਿ ਮਿਲੈ ਸਾਬਾਸਿ ॥ guramukh naam milai saabaas | The Gurmukhs are celebrated with the glory of the Naam, the Name of the Lord. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਹਰਿ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਧਾਰੀ ਦਾਸਨਿ ਦਾਸ ॥ har kirapaa dhaaree daasan daas | The Lord has showered His Mercy upon me, and made me the slave of His slaves. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਜਨ ਨਾਨਕ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮ ਧਨੁ ਰਾਸਿ ॥੪॥੪॥ jan naanak har naam dhan raas |4|4| The Name of the Lord is the wealth and capital of servant Nanak. ||4||4|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji

ਧ੍ਰਿਗੁ ਧ੍ਰਿਗੁ ਖਾਇਆ ਧ੍ਰਿਗੁ ਧ੍ਰਿਗੁ ਸੋਇਆ ਧ੍ਰਿਗੁ ਧ੍ਰਿਗੁ ਕਾਪੜੁ ਅੰਗਿ ਚੜਾਇਆ ॥ dhrig dhrig khaaeaa dhrig dhrig soeaa dhrig dhrig kaaparr ang charraaeaa | Cursed, cursed is the food; cursed, cursed is the sleep; cursed, cursed are the clothes worn on the body. - Guru Amardas Ji
ਧ੍ਰਿਗੁ ਸਰੀਰੁ ਕੁਟੰਬ ਸਹਿਤ ਸਿਉ ਜਿਤੁ ਹੁਣਿ ਖਸਮੁ ਨ ਪਾਇਆ ॥ dhrig sareer kuttanb sahit siau jit hun khasam na paaeaa | Cursed is the body, along with family and friends, when one does not find his Lord and Master in this life. - Guru Amardas Ji
ਪਉੜੀ ਛੁੜਕੀ ਫਿਰਿ ਹਾਥਿ ਨ ਆਵੈ ਅਹਿਲਾ ਜਨਮੁ ਗਵਾਇਆ ॥੧॥ paurree chhurrakee fir haath na aavai ahilaa janam gavaaeaa |1| He misses the step of the ladder, and this opportunity will not come into his hands again; his life is wasted, uselessly. ||1|| - Guru Amardas Ji
ਦੂਜਾ ਭਾਉ ਨ ਦੇਈ ਲਿਵ ਲਾਗਣਿ ਜਿਨਿ ਹਰਿ ਕੇ ਚਰਣ ਵਿਸਾਰੇ ॥ doojaa bhaau na deee liv laagan jin har ke charan visaare | The love of duality does not allow him to lovingly focus his attention on the Lord; he forgets the Feet of the Lord. - Guru Amardas Ji
ਜਗਜੀਵਨ ਦਾਤਾ ਜਨ ਸੇਵਕ ਤੇਰੇ ਤਿਨ ਕੇ ਤੈ ਦੂਖ ਨਿਵਾਰੇ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥ jagajeevan daataa jan sevak tere tin ke tai dookh nivaare |1| rahaau | O Life of the World, O Great Giver, you eradicate the sorrows of your humble servants. ||1||Pause|| - Guru Amardas Ji
ਤੂ ਦਇਆਲੁ ਦਇਆਪਤਿ ਦਾਤਾ ਕਿਆ ਏਹਿ ਜੰਤ ਵਿਚਾਰੇ ॥ too deaal deaapat daataa kiaa ehi jant vichaare | You are Merciful, O Great Giver of Mercy; what are these poor beings? - Guru Amardas Ji
ਮੁਕਤ ਬੰਧ ਸਭਿ ਤੁਝ ਤੇ ਹੋਏ ਐਸਾ ਆਖਿ ਵਖਾਣੇ ॥ mukat bandh sabh tujh te hoe aisaa aakh vakhaane | All are liberated or placed into bondage by You; this is all one can say. - Guru Amardas Ji
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਹੋਵੈ ਸੋ ਮੁਕਤੁ ਕਹੀਐ ਮਨਮੁਖ ਬੰਧ ਵਿਚਾਰੇ ॥੨॥ guramukh hovai so mukat kaheeai manamukh bandh vichaare |2| One who becomes Gurmukh is said to be liberated, while the poor self-willed manmukhs are in bondage. ||2|| - Guru Amardas Ji
ਸੋ ਜਨੁ ਮੁਕਤੁ ਜਿਸੁ ਏਕ ਲਿਵ ਲਾਗੀ ਸਦਾ ਰਹੈ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਲੇ ॥ so jan mukat jis ek liv laagee sadaa rahai har naale | He alone is liberated, who lovingly focuses his attention on the One Lord, always dwelling with the Lord. - Guru Amardas Ji
ਤਿਨ ਕੀ ਗਹਣ ਗਤਿ ਕਹੀ ਨ ਜਾਈ ਸਚੈ ਆਪਿ ਸਵਾਰੇ ॥ tin kee gehan gat kahee na jaaee sachai aap savaare | His depth and condition cannot be described. The True Lord Himself embellishes him. - Guru Amardas Ji
