ਪਉੜੀ ॥ paurree | Pauree: - Guru Amardas Ji

ਹਰਿ ਸਾਲਾਹੀ ਸਦਾ ਸਦਾ ਤਨੁ ਮਨੁ ਸਉਪਿ ਸਰੀਰੁ ॥ har saalaahee sadaa sadaa tan man saup sareer | Praise the Lord, forever and ever; dedicate your body and mind to Him. - Guru Amardas Ji

ਗੁਰਸਬਦੀ ਸਚੁ ਪਾਇਆ ਸਚਾ ਗਹਿਰ ਗੰਭੀਰੁ ॥ gurasabadee sach paaeaa sachaa gahir ganbheer | Through the Word of the Guru’s Shabad, I have found the True, Profound and Unfathomable Lord. - Guru Amardas Ji

ਮਨਿ ਤਨਿ ਹਿਰਦੈ ਰਵਿ ਰਹਿਆ ਹਰਿ ਹੀਰਾ ਹੀਰੁ ॥ man tan hiradai rav rahiaa har heeraa heer | The Lord, the jewel of jewels, is permeating my mind, body and heart. - Guru Amardas Ji

ਜਨਮ ਮਰਣ ਕਾ ਦੁਖੁ ਗਇਆ ਫਿਰਿ ਪਵੈ ਨ ਫੀਰੁ ॥ janam maran kaa dukh geaa fir pavai na feer | The pains of birth and death are gone, and I shall never again be consigned to the cycle of reincarnation. - Guru Amardas Ji

ਨਾਨਕ ਨਾਮੁ ਸਲਾਹਿ ਤੂ ਹਰਿ ਗੁਣੀ ਗਹੀਰੁ ॥੧੦॥ naanak naam salaeh too har gunee gaheer |10| O Nanak, praise the Naam, the Name of the Lord, the ocean of excellence. ||10|| - Guru Amardas Ji

ਨਾਨਕ ਇਹੁ ਤਨੁ ਜਾਲਿ ਜਿਨਿ ਜਲਿਐ ਨਾਮੁ ਵਿਸਾਰਿਆ ॥ naanak ihu tan jaal jin jaliai naam visaariaa | O Nanak, burn this body; this burnt body has forgotten the Naam, the Name of the Lord. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji

ਪਉਦੀ ਜਾਇ ਪਰਾਲਿ ਪਿਛੈ ਹਥੁ ਨ ਅੰਬੜੈ ਤਿਤੁ ਨਿਵੰਧੈ ਤਾਲਿ ॥੧॥ paudee jaae paraal pichhai hath na anbarrai tith nivandhai taal |1| The dirt is piling up, and in the world hereafter, your hand shall not be able to reach down into this stagnant pond to clean it out. ||1|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji

ਨਾਨਕ ਮਨ ਕੇ ਕੰਮ ਫਿਟਿਆ ਗਣਤ ਨ ਆਵਹੀ ॥ naanak man ke kam fittiaa ganat na aavahee | O Nanak, wicked are the uncountable actions of the mind. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji

ਕਿਤੀ ਲਹਾ ਸਹੰਮ ਜਾ ਬਖਸੇ ਤਾ ਧਕਾ ਨਹੀ ॥੨॥ kitee lahaa saham jaa bakhase taa dhakaa nahee |2| They bring terrible and painful retributions, but if the Lord forgives me, then I will be spared this punishment. ||2|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji

ਪਉੜੀ ॥ paurree | Pauree: - Guru Amardas Ji

ਸਚਾ ਅਮਰੁ ਚਲਾਇਓਨੁ ਕਰਿ ਸਚੁ ਫੁਰਮਾਣੁ ॥ sachaa amar chalaaeon kar sach furamaan | True is the Command He sends forth, and True are the Orders He issues. - Guru Amardas Ji

ਸਦਾ ਨਿਹਚਲੁ ਰਵਿ ਰਹਿਆ ਸੋ ਪੁਰਖੁ ਸੁਜਾਣੁ ॥ sadaa nihachal rav rahiaa so purakh sujaan | Forever unmoving and unchanging, permeating and pervading everywhere, He is the All-knowing Primal Lord. - Guru Amardas Ji

ਗੁਰ ਪਰਸਾਦੀ ਸੇਵੀਐ ਸਚੁ ਸਬਦਿ ਨੀਸਾਣੁ ॥ gur parasaadee seveeai sach sabad neesaan | By Guru’s Grace, serve Him, through the True Insignia of the Shabad. - Guru Amardas Ji

ਪੂਰਾ ਥਾਟੁ ਬਣਾਇਆ ਰੰਗੁ ਗੁਰਮਤਿ ਮਾਣੁ ॥ pooraa thaatt banaaeaa rang guramat maan | That which He makes is perfect; through the Guru’s Teachings, enjoy His Love. - Guru Amardas Ji

ਅਗਮ ਅਗੋਚਰੁ ਅਲਖੁ ਹੈ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਹਰਿ ਜਾਣੁ ॥੧੧॥ agam agochar alakh hai guramukh har jaan |11| He is inaccessible, unfathomable and unseen; as Gurmukh, know the Lord. ||11|| - Guru Amardas Ji

ਨਾਨਕ ਬਦਰਾ ਮਾਲ ਕਾ ਭੀਤਰਿ ਧਰਿਆ ਆਣਿ ॥ naanak badaraa maal kaa bheetar dhariaa aan | O Nanak, the bags of coins are brought in - Guru Nanak Dev Ji

ਖੋਟੇ ਖਰੇ ਪਰਖੀਅਨਿ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਕੈ ਦੀਬਾਣਿ ॥੧॥ khotte khare parakheean saahib kai deebaan |1| and placed in the Court of our Lord and Master, and there, the genuine and the counterfeit are separated. ||1|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji

ਨਾਵਣ ਚਲੇ ਤੀਰਥੀ ਮਨਿ ਖੋਟੈ ਤਨਿ ਚੋਰ ॥ naavan chale teerathee man khottai tan chor | They go and bathe at sacred shrines of pilgrimage, but their minds are still evil, and their bodies are thieves. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji

ਇਕੁ ਭਾਉ ਲਥੀ ਨਾਤਿਆ ਦੁਇ ਭਾ ਚੜੀਅਸੁ ਹੋਰ ॥ eik bhaau lathee naatiaa due bhaa charreeas hor | Some of their filth is washed off by these baths, but they only accumulate twice as much. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji

ਬਾਹਰਿ ਧੋਤੀ ਤੂਮੜੀ ਅੰਦਰਿ ਵਿਸੁ ਨਿਕੋਰ ॥ baahar dhotee toomarree andar vis nikor | Like a gourd, they may be washed off on the outside, but on the inside, they are still filled with poison. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji

ਸਾਧ ਭਲੇ ਅਣਨਾਤਿਆ ਚੋਰ ਸਿ ਚੋਰਾ ਚੋਰ ॥੨॥ saadh bhale ananaatiaa chor si choraa chor |2| The holy man is blessed, even without such bathing, while a thief is a thief, no matter how much he bathes. ||2|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji

ਆਪੇ ਹੁਕਮੁ ਚਲਾਇਦਾ ਜਗੁ ਧੰਧੈ ਲਾਇਆ ॥ aape hukam chalaaeidaa jag dhandhai laaeaa | He Himself issues His Commands, and links the people of the world to their tasks. - Guru Amardas Ji

ਇਕਿ ਆਪੇ ਹੀ ਆਪਿ ਲਾਇਅਨੁ ਗੁਰ ਤੇ ਸੁਖੁ ਪਾਇਆ ॥ eik aape hee aap laaeian gur te sukh paaeaa | He Himself joins some to Himself, and through the Guru, they find peace. - Guru Amardas Ji

ਦਹ ਦਿਸ ਇਹੁ ਮਨੁ ਧਾਵਦਾ ਗੁਰਿ ਠਾਕਿ ਰਹਾਇਆ ॥ deh dis ihu man dhaavadaa gur tthaak rahaaeaa | The mind runs around in the ten directions; the Guru holds it still. - Guru Amardas Ji

ਨਾਵੈ ਨੋ ਸਭ ਲੋਚਦੀ ਗੁਰਮਤੀ ਪਾਇਆ ॥ naavai no sabh lochadee guramatee paaeaa | Everyone longs for the Name, but it is only found through the Guru’s Teachings. - Guru Amardas Ji

ਧੁਰਿ ਲਿਖਿਆ ਮੇਟਿ ਨ ਸਕੀਐ ਜੋ ਹਰਿ ਲਿਖਿ ਪਾਇਆ ॥੧੨॥ dhur likhiaa mett na sakeeai jo har likh paaeaa |12| Your pre-ordained destiny, written by the Lord in the very beginning, cannot be erased. ||12|| - Guru Amardas Ji

ਦੁਇ ਦੀਵੇ ਚਉਦਹ ਹਟਨਾਲੇ ॥ due deeve chaudah hattanaale | The two lamps light the fourteen markets. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji

ਜੇਤੇ ਜੀਅ ਤੇਤੇ ਵਣਜਾਰੇ ॥ jete jeea tete vanajaare | There are just as many traders as there are living beings. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji

ਖੁਲੑੇ ਹਟ ਹੋਆ ਵਾਪਾਰੁ ॥ khulae hatt hoaa vaapaar | The shops are open, and trading is going on; - Guru Nanak Dev Ji

ਜੋ ਪਹੁਚੈ ਸੋ ਚਲਣਹਾਰੁ ॥ jo pahuchai so chalanahaar | whoever comes there, is bound to depart. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji

ਧਰਮੁ ਦਲਾਲੁ ਪਾਏ ਨੀਸਾਣੁ ॥ dharam dalaal paae neesaan | The Righteous Judge of Dharma is the broker, who gives his sign of approval. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji

ਨਾਨਕ ਨਾਮੁ ਲਾਹਾ ਪਰਵਾਣੁ ॥ naanak naam laahaa paravaan | O Nanak, those who earn the profit of the Naam are accepted and approved. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji

ਘਰਿ ਆਏ ਵਜੀ ਵਾਧਾਈ ॥ ghar aae vajee vaadhaaee | And when they return home, they are greeted with cheers; - Guru Nanak Dev Ji

ਸਚ ਨਾਮ ਕੀ ਮਿਲੀ ਵਡਿਆਈ ॥੧॥ sach naam kee milee vaddiaaee |1| they obtain the glorious greatness of the True Name. ||1|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji

ਰਾਤੀ ਹੋਵਨਿ ਕਾਲੀਆ ਸੁਪੇਦਾ ਸੇ ਵੰਨ ॥ raatee hovan kaaleea supedaa se van | Even when the night is dark, whatever is white retains its white color. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji

ਦਿਹੁ ਬਗਾ ਤਪੈ ਘਣਾ ਕਾਲਿਆ ਕਾਲੇ ਵੰਨ ॥ dihu bagaa tapai ghanaa kaaliaa kaale van | And even when the light of day is dazzlingly bright, whatever is black retains its black color. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji

ਅੰਧੇ ਅਕਲੀ ਬਾਹਰੇ ਮੂਰਖ ਅੰਧ ਗਿਆਨੁ ॥ andhe akalee baahare moorakh andh giaan | The blind fools have no wisdom at all; their understanding is blind. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji

ਨਾਨਕ ਨਦਰੀ ਬਾਹਰੇ ਕਬਹਿ ਨ ਪਾਵਹਿ ਮਾਨੁ ॥੨॥ naanak nadaree baahare kabeh na paaveh maan |2| O Nanak, without the Lord’s Grace, they will never receive honor. ||2|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji

ਕਾਇਆ ਕੋਟੁ ਰਚਾਇਆ ਹਰਿ ਸਚੈ ਆਪੇ ॥ kaaeaa kott rachaaeaa har sachai aape | The True Lord Himself created the body-fortress. - Guru Amardas Ji

ਇਕਿ ਦੂਜੈ ਭਾਇ ਖੁਆਇਅਨੁ ਹਉਮੈ ਵਿਚਿ ਵਿਆਪੇ ॥ eik doojai bhaae khuaaeian haumai vich viaape | Some are ruined through the love of duality, engrossed in egotism. - Guru Amardas Ji

ਇਹੁ ਮਾਨਸ ਜਨਮੁ ਦੁਲੰਭੁ ਸਾ ਮਨਮੁਖ ਸੰਤਾਪੇ ॥ eihu maanas janam dulanbh saa manamukh santaape | This human body is so difficult to obtain; the self-willed manmukhs suffer in pain. - Guru Amardas Ji

ਜਿਸੁ ਆਪਿ ਬੁਝਾਏ ਸੋ ਬੁਝਸੀ ਜਿਸੁ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਥਾਪੇ ॥ jis aap bujhaae so bujhasee jis satigur thaape | He alone understands, whom the Lord Himself causes to understand; he is blessed by the True Guru. - Guru Amardas Ji

ਸਭੁ ਜਗੁ ਖੇਲੁ ਰਚਾਇਓਨੁ ਸਭ ਵਰਤੈ ਆਪੇ ॥੧੩॥ sabh jag khel rachaaeon sabh varatai aape |13| He created the entire world for His play; He is pervading amongst all. ||13|| - Guru Amardas Ji
