ਕਾਮ ਹੇਤਿ ਕੁੰਚਰੁ ਲੈ ਫਾਂਕਿਓ ਓਹੁ ਪਰ ਵਸਿ ਭਇਓ ਬਿਚਾਰਾ ॥ kaam het kunchar lai faankio ohu par vas bheo bichaaraa | Lured by sexual desire, the elephant is trapped; the poor beast falls into the power of another. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਨਾਦ ਹੇਤਿ ਸਿਰੁ ਡਾਰਿਓ ਕੁਰੰਕਾ ਉਸ ਹੀ ਹੇਤ ਬਿਦਾਰਾ ॥੨॥ naad het sir ddaario kurankaa us hee het bidaaraa |2| Lured by the sound of the hunter’s bell, the deer offers its head; because of this enticement, it is killed. ||2|| - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਦੇਖਿ ਕੁਟੰਬੁ ਲੋਭਿ ਮੋਹਿਓ ਪ੍ਰਾਨੀ ਮਾਇਆ ਕਉ ਲਪਟਾਨਾ ॥ dekh kuttanb lobh mohio praanee maaeaa kau lapattaanaa | Gazing upon his family, the mortal is enticed by greed; he clings in attachment to Maya. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਅਤਿ ਰਚਿਓ ਕਰਿ ਲੀਨੋ ਅਪੁਨਾ ਉਨਿ ਛੋਡਿ ਸਰਾਪਰ ਜਾਨਾ ॥੩॥ at rachio kar leeno apunaa un chhodd saraapar jaanaa |3| Totally engrossed in worldly things, he considers them to be his own; but in the end, he shall surely have to leave them behind. ||3|| - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਬਿਨੁ ਗੋਬਿੰਦ ਅਵਰ ਸੰਗਿ ਨੇਹਾ ਓਹੁ ਜਾਣਹੁ ਸਦਾ ਦੁਹੇਲਾ ॥ bin gobind avar sang nehaa ohu jaanahu sadaa duhelaa | Know it well, that anyone who loves any other than God, shall be miserable forever. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਕਹੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਗੁਰ ਇਹੈ ਬੁਝਾਇਓ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਿ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਸਦ ਕੇਲਾ ॥੪॥੨॥ kahu naanak gur ihai bujhaaeo preet prabhoo sad kelaa |4|2| Says Nanak, the Guru has explained this to me, that love for God brings lasting bliss. ||4||2|| - Guru Arjan Dev Ji

ਕਰਿ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਦੀਓ ਮੋਹਿ ਨਾਮਾ ਬੰਧਨ ਤੇ ਛੁਟਕਾਏ ॥ kar kirapaa deeo mohi naamaa bandhan te chhuttakaae | Granting His Grace, God has blessed me with His Name, and released me of my bonds. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਮਨ ਤੇ ਬਿਸਰਿਓ ਸਗਲੋ ਧੰਧਾ ਗੁਰ ਕੀ ਚਰਣੀ ਲਾਏ ॥੧॥ man te bisario sagalo dhandhaa gur kee charanee laae |1| I have forgotten all worldly entanglements, and I am attached to the Guru’s feet. ||1|| - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਸਾਧਸੰਗਿ ਚਿੰਤ ਬਿਰਾਨੀ ਛਾਡੀ ॥ saadhasang chint biraanee chhaaddee | In the Saadh Sangat, the Company of the Holy, I have renounced my other cares and anxieties. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਅਹੰਬੁਧਿ ਮੋਹ ਮਨ ਬਾਸਨ ਦੇ ਕਰਿ ਗਡਹਾ ਗਾਡੀ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥ ahanbudh moh man baasan de kar gaddahaa gaaddee |1| rahaau | I dug a deep pit, and buried my egotistical pride, emotional attachment and the desires of my mind. ||1||Pause|| - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਨਾ ਕੋ ਮੇਰਾ ਦੁਸਮਨੁ ਰਹਿਆ ਨਾ ਹਮ ਕਿਸ ਕੇ ਬੈਰਾਈ ॥ naa ko meraa dusaman rahiaa naa ham kis ke bairaaee | No one is my enemy, and I am no one’s enemy. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਬ੍ਰਹਮੁ ਪਸਾਰੁ ਪਸਾਰਿਓ ਭੀਤਰਿ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਤੇ ਸੋਝੀ ਪਾਈ ॥੨॥ braham pasaar pasaario bheetar satigur te sojhee paaee |2| God, who expanded His expanse, is within all; I learned this from the True Guru. ||2|| - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਸਭੁ ਕੋ ਮੀਤੁ ਹਮ ਆਪਨ ਕੀਨਾ ਹਮ ਸਭਨਾ ਕੇ ਸਾਜਨ ॥ sabh ko meet ham aapan keenaa ham sabhanaa ke saajan | I am a friend to all; I am everyone’s friend. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਦੂਰਿ ਪਰਾਇਓ ਮਨ ਕਾ ਬਿਰਹਾ ਤਾ ਮੇਲੁ ਕੀਓ ਮੇਰੈ ਰਾਜਨ ॥੩॥ door paraaeo man kaa birahaa taa mel keeo merai raajan |3| When the sense of separation was removed from my mind, then I was united with the Lord, my King. ||3|| - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਬਿਨਸਿਓ ਢੀਠਾ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤੁ ਵੂਠਾ ਸਬਦੁ ਲਗੋ ਗੁਰ ਮੀਠਾ ॥ binasio dteetthaa amrit vootthaa sabad lago gur meetthaa | My stubbornness is gone, Ambrosial Nectar rains down, and the Word of the Guru’s Shabad seems so sweet to me. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਜਲਿ ਥਲਿ ਮਹੀਅਲਿ ਸਰਬ ਨਿਵਾਸੀ ਨਾਨਕ ਰਮਈਆ ਡੀਠਾ ॥੪॥੩॥ jal thal maheeal sarab nivaasee naanak rameea ddeetthaa |4|3| He is pervading everywhere, in the water, on the land and in the sky; Nanak beholds the all-pervading Lord. ||4||3|| - Guru Arjan Dev Ji

ਜਬ ਤੇ ਦਰਸਨ ਭੇਟੇ ਸਾਧੂ ਭਲੇ ਦਿਨਸ ਓਇ ਆਏ ॥ jab te darasan bhette saadhoo bhale dinas oe aae | Ever since I obtained the Blessed Vision of the Darshan of the Holy, my days have been blessed and prosperous. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਮਹਾ ਅਨੰਦੁ ਸਦਾ ਕਰਿ ਕੀਰਤਨੁ ਪੁਰਖ ਬਿਧਾਤਾ ਪਾਏ ॥੧॥ mahaa anand sadaa kar keeratan purakh bidhaataa paae |1| I have found lasting bliss, singing the Kirtan of the Praises of the Primal Lord, the Architect of destiny. ||1|| - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਅਬ ਮੋਹਿ ਰਾਮ ਜਸੋ ਮਨਿ ਗਾਇਓ ॥ ab mohi raam jaso man gaaeo | Now, I sing the Praises of the Lord within my mind. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਭਇਓ ਪ੍ਰਗਾਸੁ ਸਦਾ ਸੁਖੁ ਮਨ ਮਹਿ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਪੂਰਾ ਪਾਇਓ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥ bheo pragaas sadaa sukh man meh satigur pooraa paaeo |1| rahaau | My mind has been illumined and enlightened, and it is always at peace; I have found the Perfect True Guru. ||1||Pause|| - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਗੁਣ ਨਿਧਾਨੁ ਰਿਦ ਭੀਤਰਿ ਵਸਿਆ ਤਾ ਦੂਖੁ ਭਰਮ ਭਉ ਭਾਗਾ ॥ gun nidhaan rid bheetar vasiaa taa dookh bharam bhau bhaagaa | The Lord, the treasure of virtue, abides deep within the heart, and so pain, doubt and fear have been dispelled. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਭਈ ਪਰਾਪਤਿ ਵਸਤੁ ਅਗੋਚਰ ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮਿ ਰੰਗੁ ਲਾਗਾ ॥੨॥ bhee paraapat vasat agochar raam naam rang laagaa |2| I have obtained the most incomprehensible thing, enshrining love for the Name of the Lord. ||2|| - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਚਿੰਤ ਅਚਿੰਤਾ ਸੋਚ ਅਸੋਚਾ ਸੋਗੁ ਲੋਭੁ ਮੋਹੁ ਥਾਕਾ ॥ chint achintaa soch asochaa sog lobh mohu thaakaa | I was anxious, and now I am free of anxiety; I was worried, and now I am free of worry; my grief, greed and emotional attachments are gone. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਹਉਮੈ ਰੋਗ ਮਿਟੇ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਤੇ ਜਮ ਤੇ ਭਏ ਬਿਬਾਕਾ ॥੩॥ haumai rog mitte kirapaa te jam te bhe bibaakaa |3| By His Grace, I am cured of the disease of egotism, and the Messenger of Death no longer terrifies me. ||3|| - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਗੁਰ ਕੀ ਟਹਲ ਗੁਰੂ ਕੀ ਸੇਵਾ ਗੁਰ ਕੀ ਆਗਿਆ ਭਾਣੀ ॥ gur kee ttehal guroo kee sevaa gur kee aagiaa bhaanee | Working for the Guru, serving the Guru and the Guru’s Command, all are pleasing to me. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਕਹੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਜਿਨਿ ਜਮ ਤੇ ਕਾਢੇ ਤਿਸੁ ਗੁਰ ਕੈ ਕੁਰਬਾਣੀ ॥੪॥੪॥ kahu naanak jin jam te kaadte tis gur kai kurabaanee |4|4| Says Nanak, He has released me from the clutches of Death; I am a sacrifice to that Guru. ||4||4|| - Guru Arjan Dev Ji

ਜਿਸ ਕਾ ਤਨੁ ਮਨੁ ਧਨੁ ਸਭੁ ਤਿਸ ਕਾ ਸੋਈ ਸੁਘੜੁ ਸੁਜਾਨੀ ॥ jis kaa tan man dhan sabh tis kaa soee sugharr sujaanee | Body, mind, wealth and everything belong to Him; He alone is all-wise and all-knowing. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਤਿਨ ਹੀ ਸੁਣਿਆ ਦੁਖੁ ਸੁਖੁ ਮੇਰਾ ਤਉ ਬਿਧਿ ਨੀਕੀ ਖਟਾਨੀ ॥੧॥ tin hee suniaa dukh sukh meraa tau bidh neekee khattaanee |1| He listens to my pains and pleasures, and then my condition improves. ||1|| - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਜੀਅ ਕੀ ਏਕੈ ਹੀ ਪਹਿ ਮਾਨੀ ॥ jeea kee ekai hee peh maanee | My soul is satisfied with the One Lord alone. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਅਵਰਿ ਜਤਨ ਕਰਿ ਰਹੇ ਬਹੁਤੇਰੇ ਤਿਨ ਤਿਲੁ ਨਹੀ ਕੀਮਤਿ ਜਾਨੀ ॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥ avar jatan kar rahe bahutere tin til nahee keemat jaanee | rahaau | People make all sorts of other efforts, but they have no value at all. ||Pause|| - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਨਾਮੁ ਨਿਰਮੋਲਕੁ ਹੀਰਾ ਗੁਰਿ ਦੀਨੋ ਮੰਤਾਨੀ ॥ amrit naam niramolak heeraa gur deeno mantaanee | The Ambrosial Naam, the Name of the Lord, is a priceless jewel. The Guru has given me this advice. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਡਿਗੈ ਨ ਡੋਲੈ ਦ੍ਰਿੜੁ ਕਰਿ ਰਹਿਓ ਪੂਰਨ ਹੋਇ ਤ੍ਰਿਪਤਾਨੀ ॥੨॥ ddigai na ddolai drirr kar rahio pooran hoe tripataanee |2| It cannot be lost, and it cannot be shaken off; it remains steady, and I am perfectly satisfied with it. ||2|| - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਓਇ ਜੁ ਬੀਚ ਹਮ ਤੁਮ ਕਛੁ ਹੋਤੇ ਤਿਨ ਕੀ ਬਾਤ ਬਿਲਾਨੀ ॥ oe ju beech ham tum kachh hote tin kee baat bilaanee | Those things which tore me away from You, Lord, are now gone. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
