ਸਲੋਕੁ ਮਃ ੩ ॥ salok mahalaa 3 | Salok, Third Mehl: - Guru Amardas Ji
ਪਰਥਾਇ ਸਾਖੀ ਮਹਾ ਪੁਰਖ ਬੋਲਦੇ ਸਾਝੀ ਸਗਲ ਜਹਾਨੈ ॥ parathaae saakhee mahaa purakh bolade saajhee sagal jahaanai | Great men speak the teachings by relating them to individual situations, but the whole world shares in them. - Guru Amardas Ji
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਹੋਇ ਸੁ ਭਉ ਕਰੇ ਆਪਣਾ ਆਪੁ ਪਛਾਣੈ ॥ guramukh hoe su bhau kare aapanaa aap pachhaanai | One who becomes Gurmukh knows the Fear of God, and realizes his own self. - Guru Amardas Ji
ਗੁਰ ਪਰਸਾਦੀ ਜੀਵਤੁ ਮਰੈ ਤਾ ਮਨ ਹੀ ਤੇ ਮਨੁ ਮਾਨੈ ॥ gur parasaadee jeevat marai taa man hee te man maanai | If, by Guru’s Grace, one remains dead while yet alive, the mind becomes content in itself. - Guru Amardas Ji
ਜਿਨ ਕਉ ਮਨ ਕੀ ਪਰਤੀਤਿ ਨਾਹੀ ਨਾਨਕ ਸੇ ਕਿਆ ਕਥਹਿ ਗਿਆਨੈ ॥੧॥ jin kau man kee parateet naahee naanak se kiaa katheh giaanai |1| Those who have no faith in their own minds, O Nanak - how can they speak of spiritual wisdom? ||1|| - Guru Amardas Ji

ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਚਿਤੁ ਨ ਲਾਇਓ ਅੰਤਿ ਦੁਖੁ ਪਹੁਤਾ ਆਇ ॥ guramukh chit na laaeo ant dukh pahutaa aae | Those who do not focus their consciousness on the Lord, as Gurmukh, suffer pain and grief in the end. - Guru Amardas Ji
ਅੰਦਰਹੁ ਬਾਹਰਹੁ ਅੰਧਿਆਂ ਸੁਧਿ ਨ ਕਾਈ ਪਾਇ ॥ andarahu baaharahu andhiaan sudh na kaaee paae | They are blind, inwardly and outwardly, and they do not understand anything. - Guru Amardas Ji
ਪੰਡਿਤ ਤਿਨ ਕੀ ਬਰਕਤੀ ਸਭੁ ਜਗਤੁ ਖਾਇ ਜੋ ਰਤੇ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਇ ॥ panddit tin kee barakatee sabh jagat khaae jo rate har naae | O Pandit, O religious scholar, the whole world is fed for the sake of those who are attuned to the Lord’s Name. - Guru Amardas Ji
ਜਿਨ ਗੁਰ ਕੈ ਸਬਦਿ ਸਲਾਹਿਆ ਹਰਿ ਸਿਉ ਰਹੇ ਸਮਾਇ ॥ jin gur kai sabad salaahiaa har siau rahe samaae | Those who praise the Word of the Guru’s Shabad, remain blended with the Lord. - Guru Amardas Ji
ਪੰਡਿਤ ਦੂਜੈ ਭਾਇ ਬਰਕਤਿ ਨ ਹੋਵਈ ਨਾ ਧਨੁ ਪਲੈ ਪਾਇ ॥ panddit doojai bhaae barakat na hovee naa dhan palai paae | O Pandit, O religious scholar, no one is satisfied, and no one finds true wealth through the love of duality. - Guru Amardas Ji
ਪੜਿ ਥਕੇ ਸੰਤੋਖੁ ਨ ਆਇਓ ਅਨਦਿਨੁ ਜਲਤ ਵਿਹਾਇ ॥ parr thake santokh na aaeo anadin jalat vihaae | They have grown weary of reading scriptures, but still, they do not find contentment, and they pass their lives burning, night and day. - Guru Amardas Ji
ਕੂਕ ਪੂਕਾਰ ਨ ਚੁਕਈ ਨਾ ਸੰਸਾ ਵਿਚਹੁ ਜਾਇ ॥ kook pookaar na chukee naa sansaa vichahu jaae | Their cries and complaints never end, and doubt does not depart from within them. - Guru Amardas Ji
ਨਾਨਕ ਨਾਮ ਵਿਹੂਣਿਆ ਮੁਹਿ ਕਾਲੈ ਉਠਿ ਜਾਇ ॥੨॥ naanak naam vihooniaa muhi kaalai utth jaae |2| O Nanak, without the Naam, the Name of the Lord, they rise up and depart with blackened faces. ||2|| - Guru Amardas Ji
ਪਉੜੀ ॥ paurree | Pauree: - Guru Ramdas Ji
ਹਰਿ ਸਜਣ ਮੇਲਿ ਪਿਆਰੇ ਮਿਲਿ ਪੰਥੁ ਦਸਾਈ ॥ har sajan mel piaare mil panth dasaaee | O Beloved, lead me to meet my True Friend; meeting with Him, I shall ask Him to show me the Path. - Guru Ramdas Ji
ਜੋ ਹਰਿ ਦਸੇ ਮਿਤੁ ਤਿਸੁ ਹਉ ਬਲਿ ਜਾਈ ॥ jo har dase mit tis hau bal jaaee | I am a sacrifice to that Friend, who shows it to me. - Guru Ramdas Ji
ਗੁਣ ਸਾਝੀ ਤਿਨ ਸਿਉ ਕਰੀ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਧਿਆਈ ॥ gun saajhee tin siau karee har naam dhiaaee | I share His Virtues with Him, and meditate on the Lord’s Name. - Guru Ramdas Ji
ਹਰਿ ਸੇਵੀ ਪਿਆਰਾ ਨਿਤ ਸੇਵਿ ਹਰਿ ਸੁਖੁ ਪਾਈ ॥ har sevee piaaraa nit sev har sukh paaee | I serve my Beloved Lord forever; serving the Lord, I have found peace. - Guru Ramdas Ji
ਬਲਿਹਾਰੀ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਤਿਸੁ ਜਿਨਿ ਸੋਝੀ ਪਾਈ ॥੧੨॥ balihaaree satigur tis jin sojhee paaee |12| I am a sacrifice to the True Guru, who has imparted this understanding to me. ||12|| - Guru Ramdas Ji

ਪੰਡਿਤ ਮੈਲੁ ਨ ਚੁਕਈ ਜੇ ਵੇਦ ਪੜੈ ਜੁਗ ਚਾਰਿ ॥ panddit mail na chukee je ved parrai jug chaar | O Pandit, O religious scholar, your filth shall not be erased, even if you read the Vedas for four ages. - Guru Amardas Ji
ਤ੍ਰੈ ਗੁਣ ਮਾਇਆ ਮੂਲੁ ਹੈ ਵਿਚਿ ਹਉਮੈ ਨਾਮੁ ਵਿਸਾਰਿ ॥ trai gun maaeaa mool hai vich haumai naam visaar | The three qualities are the roots of Maya; in egotism, one forgets the Naam, the Name of the Lord. - Guru Amardas Ji
ਪੰਡਿਤ ਭੂਲੇ ਦੂਜੈ ਲਾਗੇ ਮਾਇਆ ਕੈ ਵਾਪਾਰਿ ॥ panddit bhoole doojai laage maaeaa kai vaapaar | The Pandits are deluded, attached to duality, and they deal only in Maya. - Guru Amardas Ji
ਅੰਤਰਿ ਤ੍ਰਿਸਨਾ ਭੁਖ ਹੈ ਮੂਰਖ ਭੁਖਿਆ ਮੁਏ ਗਵਾਰ ॥ antar trisanaa bhukh hai moorakh bhukhiaa mue gavaar | They are filled with thirst and hunger; the ignorant fools starve to death. - Guru Amardas Ji
ਸਤਿਗੁਰਿ ਸੇਵਿਐ ਸੁਖੁ ਪਾਇਆ ਸਚੈ ਸਬਦਿ ਵੀਚਾਰਿ ॥ satigur seviai sukh paaeaa sachai sabad veechaar | Serving the True Guru, peace is obtained, contemplating the True Word of the Shabad. - Guru Amardas Ji
ਅੰਦਰਹੁ ਤ੍ਰਿਸਨਾ ਭੁਖ ਗਈ ਸਚੈ ਨਾਇ ਪਿਆਰਿ ॥ andarahu trisanaa bhukh gee sachai naae piaar | Hunger and thirst have departed from within me; I am in love with the True Name. - Guru Amardas Ji
ਨਾਨਕ ਨਾਮਿ ਰਤੇ ਸਹਜੇ ਰਜੇ ਜਿਨਾ ਹਰਿ ਰਖਿਆ ਉਰਿ ਧਾਰਿ ॥੧॥ naanak naam rate sahaje raje jinaa har rakhiaa ur dhaar |1| O Nanak, those who are imbued with the Naam, who keep the Lord clasped tightly to their hearts, are automatically satisfied. ||1|| - Guru Amardas Ji

ਮਨਮੁਖ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਨ ਸੇਵਿਆ ਦੁਖੁ ਲਗਾ ਬਹੁਤਾ ਆਇ ॥ manamukh har naam na seviaa dukh lagaa bahutaa aae | The self-willed manmukh does not serve the Lord’s Name, and so he suffers in horrible pain. - Guru Amardas Ji
ਅੰਤਰਿ ਅਗਿਆਨੁ ਅੰਧੇਰੁ ਹੈ ਸੁਧਿ ਨ ਕਾਈ ਪਾਇ ॥ antar agiaan andher hai sudh na kaaee paae | He is filled with the darkness of ignorance, and he does not understand anything. - Guru Amardas Ji
ਮਨਹਠਿ ਸਹਜਿ ਨ ਬੀਜਿਓ ਭੁਖਾ ਕਿ ਅਗੈ ਖਾਇ ॥ manahatth sehaj na beejio bhukhaa ki agai khaae | Because of his stubborn mind, he does not plant the seeds of intuitive peace; what will he eat in the world hereafter, to satisfy his hunger? - Guru Amardas Ji
ਨਾਮੁ ਨਿਧਾਨੁ ਵਿਸਾਰਿਆ ਦੂਜੈ ਲਗਾ ਜਾਇ ॥ naam nidhaan visaariaa doojai lagaa jaae | He has forgotten the treasure of the Naam; he is caught in the love of duality. - Guru Amardas Ji
ਨਾਨਕ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਮਿਲਹਿ ਵਡਿਆਈਆ ਜੇ ਆਪੇ ਮੇਲਿ ਮਿਲਾਇ ॥੨॥ naanak guramukh mileh vaddiaaeea je aape mel milaae |2| O Nanak, the Gurmukhs are honored with glory, when the Lord Himself unites them in His Union. ||2|| - Guru Amardas Ji

ਹਰਿ ਰਸਨਾ ਹਰਿ ਜਸੁ ਗਾਵੈ ਖਰੀ ਸੁਹਾਵਣੀ ॥ har rasanaa har jas gaavai kharee suhaavanee | The tongue which sings the Lord’s Praises, is so very beautiful. - Guru Ramdas Ji
ਜੋ ਮਨਿ ਤਨਿ ਮੁਖਿ ਹਰਿ ਬੋਲੈ ਸਾ ਹਰਿ ਭਾਵਣੀ ॥ jo man tan mukh har bolai saa har bhaavanee | One who speaks the Lord’s Name, with mind, body and mouth, is pleasing to the Lord. - Guru Ramdas Ji
ਜੋ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਚਖੈ ਸਾਦੁ ਸਾ ਤ੍ਰਿਪਤਾਵਣੀ ॥ jo guramukh chakhai saad saa tripataavanee | That Gurmukh tastes the the sublime taste of the Lord, and is satisfied. - Guru Ramdas Ji
ਗੁਣ ਗਾਵੈ ਪਿਆਰੇ ਨਿਤ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਇ ਗੁਣੀ ਸਮਝਾਵਣੀ ॥ gun gaavai piaare nit gun gaae gunee samajhaavanee | She sings continually the Glorious Praises of her Beloved; singing His Glorious Praises, she is uplifted. - Guru Ramdas Ji
ਜਿਸੁ ਹੋਵੈ ਆਪਿ ਦਇਆਲੁ ਸਾ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਗੁਰੂ ਬੁਲਾਵਣੀ ॥੧੩॥ jis hovai aap deaal saa satiguroo guroo bulaavanee |13| She is blessed with the Lord’s Mercy, and she chants the Words of the Guru, the True Guru. ||13|| - Guru Ramdas Ji

ਹਸਤੀ ਸਿਰਿ ਜਿਉ ਅੰਕਸੁ ਹੈ ਅਹਰਣਿ ਜਿਉ ਸਿਰੁ ਦੇਇ ॥ hasatee sir jiau ankas hai aharan jiau sir dee | The elephant offers its head to the reins, and the anvil offers itself to the hammer; - Guru Amardas Ji
ਮਨੁ ਤਨੁ ਆਗੈ ਰਾਖਿ ਕੈ ਊਭੀ ਸੇਵ ਕਰੇਇ ॥ man tan aagai raakh kai aoobhee sev karee | just so, we offer our minds and bodies to our Guru; we stand before Him, and serve Him. - Guru Amardas Ji
