ਧੰਧਾ ਕਰਤਿਆ ਨਿਹਫਲੁ ਜਨਮੁ ਗਵਾਇਆ ਸੁਖਦਾਤਾ ਮਨਿ ਨ ਵਸਾਇਆ ॥ dhandhaa karatiaa nihafal janam gavaaeaa sukhadaataa man na vasaaeaa | Involved in worldly affairs, he wastes his life in vain; the peace-giving Lord does not come to abide in his mind. - Guru Amardas Ji
ਨਾਨਕ ਨਾਮੁ ਤਿਨਾ ਕਉ ਮਿਲਿਆ ਜਿਨ ਕਉ ਧੁਰਿ ਲਿਖਿ ਪਾਇਆ ॥੧॥ naanak naam tinaa kau miliaa jin kau dhur likh paaeaa |1| O Nanak, they alone obtain the Name, who have such pre-ordained destiny. ||1|| - Guru Amardas Ji

ਘਰ ਹੀ ਮਹਿ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤੁ ਭਰਪੂਰੁ ਹੈ ਮਨਮੁਖਾ ਸਾਦੁ ਨ ਪਾਇਆ ॥ ghar hee meh amrit bharapoor hai manamukhaa saad na paaeaa | The home within is filled with Ambrosial Nectar, but the self-willed manmukh does not get to taste it. - Guru Amardas Ji
ਜਿਉ ਕਸਤੂਰੀ ਮਿਰਗੁ ਨ ਜਾਣੈ ਭ੍ਰਮਦਾ ਭਰਮਿ ਭੁਲਾਇਆ ॥ jiau kasatooree mirag na jaanai bhramadaa bharam bhulaaeaa | He is like the deer, who does not recognize its own musk-scent; it wanders around, deluded by doubt. - Guru Amardas Ji
ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤੁ ਤਜਿ ਬਿਖੁ ਸੰਗ੍ਰਹੈ ਕਰਤੈ ਆਪਿ ਖੁਆਇਆ ॥ amrit taj bikh sangrahai karatai aap khuaaeaa | The manmukh forsakes the Ambrosial Nectar, and instead gathers poison; the Creator Himself has fooled him. - Guru Amardas Ji
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਵਿਰਲੇ ਸੋਝੀ ਪਈ ਤਿਨਾ ਅੰਦਰਿ ਬ੍ਰਹਮੁ ਦਿਖਾਇਆ ॥ guramukh virale sojhee pee tinaa andar braham dikhaaeaa | How rare are the Gurmukhs, who obtain this understanding; they behold the Lord God within themselves. - Guru Amardas Ji
ਤਨੁ ਮਨੁ ਸੀਤਲੁ ਹੋਇਆ ਰਸਨਾ ਹਰਿ ਸਾਦੁ ਆਇਆ ॥ tan man seetal hoeaa rasanaa har saad aaeaa | Their minds and bodies are cooled and soothed, and their tongues enjoy the sublime taste of the Lord. - Guru Amardas Ji
ਸਬਦੇ ਹੀ ਨਾਉ ਊਪਜੈ ਸਬਦੇ ਮੇਲਿ ਮਿਲਾਇਆ ॥ sabade hee naau aoopajai sabade mel milaaeaa | Through the Word of the Shabad, the Name wells up; through the Shabad, we are united in the Lord’s Union. - Guru Amardas Ji
ਬਿਨੁ ਸਬਦੈ ਸਭੁ ਜਗੁ ਬਉਰਾਨਾ ਬਿਰਥਾ ਜਨਮੁ ਗਵਾਇਆ ॥ bin sabadai sabh jag bauraanaa birathaa janam gavaaeaa | Without the Shabad, the whole world is insane, and it loses its life in vain. - Guru Amardas Ji
ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤੁ ਏਕੋ ਸਬਦੁ ਹੈ ਨਾਨਕ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਪਾਇਆ ॥੨॥ amrit eko sabad hai naanak guramukh paaeaa |2| The Shabad alone is Ambrosial Nectar; O Nanak, the Gurmukhs obtain it. ||2|| - Guru Amardas Ji

ਸੋ ਹਰਿ ਪੁਰਖੁ ਅਗੰਮੁ ਹੈ ਕਹੁ ਕਿਤੁ ਬਿਧਿ ਪਾਈਐ ॥ so har purakh agam hai kahu kit bidh paaeeai | The Lord God is inaccessible; tell me, how can we find Him? - Guru Ramdas Ji
ਤਿਸੁ ਰੂਪੁ ਨ ਰੇਖ ਅਦ੍ਰਿਸਟੁ ਕਹੁ ਜਨ ਕਿਉ ਧਿਆਈਐ ॥ tis roop na rekh adrisatt kahu jan kiau dhiaaeeai | He has no form or feature, and He cannot be seen; tell me, how can we meditate on Him? - Guru Ramdas Ji
ਨਿਰੰਕਾਰੁ ਨਿਰੰਜਨੁ ਹਰਿ ਅਗਮੁ ਕਿਆ ਕਹਿ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਈਐ ॥ nirankaar niranjan har agam kiaa keh gun gaaeeai | The Lord is formless, immaculate and inaccessible; which of His Virtues should we speak of and sing? - Guru Ramdas Ji
ਜਿਸੁ ਆਪਿ ਬੁਝਾਏ ਆਪਿ ਸੁ ਹਰਿ ਮਾਰਗਿ ਪਾਈਐ ॥ jis aap bujhaae aap su har maarag paaeeai | They alone walk on the Lord’s Path, whom the Lord Himself instructs. - Guru Ramdas Ji
ਗੁਰਿ ਪੂਰੈ ਵੇਖਾਲਿਆ ਗੁਰ ਸੇਵਾ ਪਾਈਐ ॥੪॥ gur poorai vekhaaliaa gur sevaa paaeeai |4| The Perfect Guru has revealed Him to me; serving the Guru, He is found. ||4|| - Guru Ramdas Ji

ਜਿਉ ਤਨੁ ਕੋਲੂ ਪੀੜੀਐ ਰਤੁ ਨ ਭੋਰੀ ਡੇਹਿ ॥ jiau tan koloo peerreeai rat na bhoree ddehi | It is as if my body has been crushed in the oil-press, without yielding even a drop of blood; - Guru Amardas Ji
ਜੀਉ ਵੰਞੈ ਚਉ ਖੰਨੀਐ ਸਚੇ ਸੰਦੜੈ ਨੇਹਿ ॥ jeeo vanyai chau khaneeai sache sandarrai nehi | it is as if my soul has been cut apart into pieces for the sake of the Love of the True Lord; - Guru Amardas Ji
ਨਾਨਕ ਮੇਲੁ ਨ ਚੁਕਈ ਰਾਤੀ ਅਤੈ ਡੇਹ ॥੧॥ naanak mel na chukee raatee atai ddeh |1| O Nanak, still, night and day, my Union with the Lord is not broken. ||1|| - Guru Amardas Ji

ਸਜਣੁ ਮੈਡਾ ਰੰਗੁਲਾ ਰੰਗੁ ਲਾਏ ਮਨੁ ਲੇਇ ॥ sajan maiddaa rangulaa rang laae man lee | My Friend is so full of joy and love; He colors my mind with the color of His Love, - Guru Amardas Ji
ਜਿਉ ਮਾਜੀਠੈ ਕਪੜੇ ਰੰਗੇ ਭੀ ਪਾਹੇਹਿ ॥ jiau maajeetthai kaparre range bhee paahehi | like the fabric which is treated to retain the color of the dye. - Guru Amardas Ji
ਨਾਨਕ ਰੰਗੁ ਨ ਉਤਰੈ ਬਿਆ ਨ ਲਗੈ ਕੇਹ ॥੨॥ naanak rang na utarai biaa na lagai keh |2| O Nanak, this color does not depart, and no other color can be imparted to this fabric. ||2|| - Guru Amardas Ji

ਹਰਿ ਆਪਿ ਵਰਤੈ ਆਪਿ ਹਰਿ ਆਪਿ ਬੁਲਾਇਦਾ ॥ har aap varatai aap har aap bulaaeidaa | The Lord Himself is pervading everywhere; the Lord Himself causes us to chant His Name. - Guru Ramdas Ji
ਹਰਿ ਆਪੇ ਸ੍ਰਿਸਟਿ ਸਵਾਰਿ ਸਿਰਿ ਧੰਧੈ ਲਾਇਦਾ ॥ har aape srisatt savaar sir dhandhai laaeidaa | The Lord Himself created the creation; He commits all to their tasks. - Guru Ramdas Ji
ਇਕਨਾ ਭਗਤੀ ਲਾਇ ਇਕਿ ਆਪਿ ਖੁਆਇਦਾ ॥ eikanaa bhagatee laae ik aap khuaaeidaa | He engages some in devotional worship, and others, He causes to stray. - Guru Ramdas Ji
ਇਕਨਾ ਮਾਰਗਿ ਪਾਇ ਇਕਿ ਉਝੜਿ ਪਾਇਦਾ ॥ eikanaa maarag paae ik ujharr paaeidaa | He places some on the Path, while He leads others into the wilderness. - Guru Ramdas Ji
ਜਨੁ ਨਾਨਕੁ ਨਾਮੁ ਧਿਆਏ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਇਦਾ ॥੫॥ jan naanak naam dhiaae guramukh gun gaaeidaa |5| Servant Nanak meditates on the Naam, the Name of the Lord; as Gurmukh, he sings the Glorious Praises of the Lord. ||5|| - Guru Ramdas Ji

ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਕੀ ਸੇਵਾ ਸਫਲੁ ਹੈ ਜੇ ਕੋ ਕਰੇ ਚਿਤੁ ਲਾਇ ॥ satigur kee sevaa safal hai je ko kare chit laae | Service to the True Guru is fruitful and rewarding, if one performs it with his mind focused on it. - Guru Amardas Ji
ਮਨਿ ਚਿੰਦਿਆ ਫਲੁ ਪਾਵਣਾ ਹਉਮੈ ਵਿਚਹੁ ਜਾਇ ॥ man chindiaa fal paavanaa haumai vichahu jaae | The fruits of the mind’s desires are obtained, and egotism departs from within. - Guru Amardas Ji
ਬੰਧਨ ਤੋੜੈ ਮੁਕਤਿ ਹੋਇ ਸਚੇ ਰਹੈ ਸਮਾਇ ॥ bandhan torrai mukat hoe sache rahai samaae | His bonds are broken, and he is liberated; he remains absorbed in the True Lord. - Guru Amardas Ji
ਇਸੁ ਜਗ ਮਹਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਅਲਭੁ ਹੈ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਵਸੈ ਮਨਿ ਆਇ ॥ eis jag meh naam alabh hai guramukh vasai man aae | It is so difficult to obtain the Naam in this world; it comes to dwell in the mind of the Gurmukh. - Guru Amardas Ji
ਨਾਨਕ ਜੋ ਗੁਰੁ ਸੇਵਹਿ ਆਪਣਾ ਹਉ ਤਿਨ ਬਲਿਹਾਰੈ ਜਾਉ ॥੧॥ naanak jo gur seveh aapanaa hau tin balihaarai jaau |1| O Nanak, I am a sacrifice to one who serves his True Guru. ||1|| - Guru Amardas Ji

ਮਨਮੁਖ ਮੰਨੁ ਅਜਿਤੁ ਹੈ ਦੂਜੈ ਲਗੈ ਜਾਇ ॥ manamukh man ajit hai doojai lagai jaae | The mind of the self-willed manmukh is so very stubborn; it is stuck in the love of duality. - Guru Amardas Ji
ਤਿਸ ਨੋ ਸੁਖੁ ਸੁਪਨੈ ਨਹੀ ਦੁਖੇ ਦੁਖਿ ਵਿਹਾਇ ॥ tis no sukh supanai nahee dukhe dukh vihaae | He does not find peace, even in dreams; he passes his life in misery and suffering. - Guru Amardas Ji
ਘਰਿ ਘਰਿ ਪੜਿ ਪੜਿ ਪੰਡਿਤ ਥਕੇ ਸਿਧ ਸਮਾਧਿ ਲਗਾਇ ॥ ghar ghar parr parr panddit thake sidh samaadh lagaae | The Pandits have grown weary of going door to door, reading and reciting their scriptures; the Siddhas have gone into their trances of Samaadhi. - Guru Amardas Ji
ਇਹੁ ਮਨੁ ਵਸਿ ਨ ਆਵਈ ਥਕੇ ਕਰਮ ਕਮਾਇ ॥ eihu man vas na aavee thake karam kamaae | This mind cannot be controlled; they are tired of performing religious rituals. - Guru Amardas Ji
ਭੇਖਧਾਰੀ ਭੇਖ ਕਰਿ ਥਕੇ ਅਠਿਸਠਿ ਤੀਰਥ ਨਾਇ ॥ bhekhadhaaree bhekh kar thake atthisatth teerath naae | The impersonators have grown weary of wearing false costumes, and bathing at the sixty-eight sacred shrines. - Guru Amardas Ji
