ਮਨ ਕਾਮਨਾ ਤੀਰਥ ਜਾਇ ਬਸਿਓ ਸਿਰਿ ਕਰਵਤ ਧਰਾਏ ॥ man kaamanaa teerath jaae basio sir karavat dharaae | His mind’s desires may lead him to go and dwell at sacred places of pilgrimage, and offer his head to be sawn off; - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਮਨ ਕੀ ਮੈਲੁ ਨ ਉਤਰੈ ਇਹ ਬਿਧਿ ਜੇ ਲਖ ਜਤਨ ਕਰਾਏ ॥੩॥ man kee mail na utarai ih bidh je lakh jatan karaae |3| but this will not cause the filth of his mind to depart, even though he may make thousands of efforts. ||3|| - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਕਨਿਕ ਕਾਮਿਨੀ ਹੈਵਰ ਗੈਵਰ ਬਹੁ ਬਿਧਿ ਦਾਨੁ ਦਾਤਾਰਾ ॥ kanik kaaminee haivar gaivar bahu bidh daan daataaraa | He may give gifts of all sorts - gold, women, horses and elephants. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਅੰਨ ਬਸਤ੍ਰ ਭੂਮਿ ਬਹੁ ਅਰਪੇ ਨਹ ਮਿਲੀਐ ਹਰਿ ਦੁਆਰਾ ॥੪॥ an basatr bhoom bahu arape neh mileeai har duaaraa |4| He may make offerings of corn, clothes and land in abundance, but this will not lead him to the Lord’s Door. ||4|| - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਪੂਜਾ ਅਰਚਾ ਬੰਦਨ ਡੰਡਉਤ ਖਟੁ ਕਰਮਾ ਰਤੁ ਰਹਤਾ ॥ poojaa arachaa bandan ddanddaut khatt karamaa rat rahataa | He may remain devoted to worship and adoration, bowing his forehead to the floor, practicing the six religious rituals. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਹਉ ਹਉ ਕਰਤ ਬੰਧਨ ਮਹਿ ਪਰਿਆ ਨਹ ਮਿਲੀਐ ਇਹ ਜੁਗਤਾ ॥੫॥ hau hau karat bandhan meh pariaa neh mileeai ih jugataa |5| He indulges in egotism and pride, and falls into entanglements, but he does not meet the Lord by these devices. ||5|| - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਜੋਗ ਸਿਧ ਆਸਣ ਚਉਰਾਸੀਹ ਏ ਭੀ ਕਰਿ ਕਰਿ ਰਹਿਆ ॥ jog sidh aasan chauraaseeh e bhee kar kar rahiaa | He practices the eighty-four postures of Yoga, and acquires the supernatural powers of the Siddhas, but he gets tired of practicing these. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਵਡੀ ਆਰਜਾ ਫਿਰਿ ਫਿਰਿ ਜਨਮੈ ਹਰਿ ਸਿਉ ਸੰਗੁ ਨ ਗਹਿਆ ॥੬॥ vaddee aarajaa fir fir janamai har siau sang na gahiaa |6| He lives a long life, but is reincarnated again and again; he has not met with the Lord. ||6|| - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਰਾਜ ਲੀਲਾ ਰਾਜਨ ਕੀ ਰਚਨਾ ਕਰਿਆ ਹੁਕਮੁ ਅਫਾਰਾ ॥ raaj leelaa raajan kee rachanaa kariaa hukam afaaraa | He may enjoy princely pleasures, and regal pomp and ceremony, and issue unchallenged commands. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਸੇਜ ਸੋਹਨੀ ਚੰਦਨੁ ਚੋਆ ਨਰਕ ਘੋਰ ਕਾ ਦੁਆਰਾ ॥੭॥ sej sohanee chandan choaa narak ghor kaa duaaraa |7| He may lie on beautiful beds, perfumed with sandalwood oil, but this will led him only to the gates of the most horrible hell. ||7|| - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਹਰਿ ਕੀਰਤਿ ਸਾਧਸੰਗਤਿ ਹੈ ਸਿਰਿ ਕਰਮਨ ਕੈ ਕਰਮਾ ॥ har keerat saadhasangat hai sir karaman kai karamaa | Singing the Kirtan of the Lord’s Praises in the Saadh Sangat, the Company of the Holy, is the highest of all actions. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਕਹੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਤਿਸੁ ਭਇਓ ਪਰਾਪਤਿ ਜਿਸੁ ਪੁਰਬ ਲਿਖੇ ਕਾ ਲਹਨਾ ॥੮॥ kahu naanak tis bheo paraapat jis purab likhe kaa lahanaa |8| Says Nanak, he alone obtains it, who is pre-destined to receive it. ||8|| - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਤੇਰੋ ਸੇਵਕੁ ਇਹ ਰੰਗਿ ਮਾਤਾ ॥ tero sevak ih rang maataa | Your slave is intoxicated with this Love of Yours. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਭਇਓ ਕ੍ਰਿਪਾਲੁ ਦੀਨ ਦੁਖ ਭੰਜਨੁ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਕੀਰਤਨਿ ਇਹੁ ਮਨੁ ਰਾਤਾ ॥ ਰਹਾਉ ਦੂਜਾ ॥੧॥੩॥ bheo kripaal deen dukh bhanjan har har keeratan ihu man raataa | rahaau doojaa |1|3| The Destroyer of the pains of the poor has become merciful to me, and this mind is imbued with the Praises of the Lord, Har, Har. ||Second Pause||1||3|| - Guru Arjan Dev Ji

ਸੋਰਠਿ ਸਦਾ ਸੁਹਾਵਣੀ ਜੇ ਸਚਾ ਮਨਿ ਹੋਇ ॥ soratth sadaa suhaavanee je sachaa man hoe | Sorat’h is always beautiful, if it brings the True Lord to dwell in the mind of the soul-bride. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਦੰਦੀ ਮੈਲੁ ਨ ਕਤੁ ਮਨਿ ਜੀਭੈ ਸਚਾ ਸੋਇ ॥ dandee mail na kat man jeebhai sachaa soe | Her teeth are clean and her mind is not split by duality; the Name of the True Lord is on her tongue. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਸਸੁਰੈ ਪੇਈਐ ਭੈ ਵਸੀ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਸੇਵਿ ਨਿਸੰਗ ॥ sasurai peeeai bhai vasee satigur sev nisang | Here and hereafter, she abides in the Fear of God, and serves the True Guru without hesitation. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਪਰਹਰਿ ਕਪੜੁ ਜੇ ਪਿਰ ਮਿਲੈ ਖੁਸੀ ਰਾਵੈ ਪਿਰੁ ਸੰਗਿ ॥ parahar kaparr je pir milai khusee raavai pir sang | Discarding worldly adornments, she meets her Husband Lord, and she celebrates joyfully with Him. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਸਦਾ ਸੀਗਾਰੀ ਨਾਉ ਮਨਿ ਕਦੇ ਨ ਮੈਲੁ ਪਤੰਗੁ ॥ sadaa seegaaree naau man kade na mail patang | She is adorned forever with the Name in her mind, and she does not have even an iota of filth. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਦੇਵਰ ਜੇਠ ਮੁਏ ਦੁਖਿ ਸਸੂ ਕਾ ਡਰੁ ਕਿਸੁ ॥ devar jetth mue dukh sasoo kaa ddar kis | Her husband’s younger and elder brothers, the corrupt desires, have died, suffering in pain; and now, who fears Maya, the mother-in-law? - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਜੇ ਪਿਰ ਭਾਵੈ ਨਾਨਕਾ ਕਰਮ ਮਣੀ ਸਭੁ ਸਚੁ ॥੧॥ je pir bhaavai naanakaa karam manee sabh sach |1| If she becomes pleasing to her Husband Lord, O Nanak, she bears the jewel of good karma upon her forehead, and everything is Truth to her. ||1|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji

ਸੋਰਠਿ ਤਾਮਿ ਸੁਹਾਵਣੀ ਜਾ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਢੰਢੋਲੇ ॥ soratth taam suhaavanee jaa har naam dtandtole | Sorat’h is beautiful only when it leads the soul-bride to seek the Lord’s Name. - Guru Ramdas Ji
ਗੁਰ ਪੁਰਖੁ ਮਨਾਵੈ ਆਪਣਾ ਗੁਰਮਤੀ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਬੋਲੇ ॥ gur purakh manaavai aapanaa guramatee har har bole | She pleases her Guru and God; under Guru’s Instruction, she speaks the Name of the Lord, Har, Har. - Guru Ramdas Ji
ਹਰਿ ਪ੍ਰੇਮਿ ਕਸਾਈ ਦਿਨਸੁ ਰਾਤਿ ਹਰਿ ਰਤੀ ਹਰਿ ਰੰਗਿ ਚੋਲੇ ॥ har prem kasaaee dinas raat har ratee har rang chole | She is attracted to the Lord’s Name, day and night, and her body is drenched in the color of the Love of the Lord, Har, Har. - Guru Ramdas Ji
ਹਰਿ ਜੈਸਾ ਪੁਰਖੁ ਨ ਲਭਈ ਸਭੁ ਦੇਖਿਆ ਜਗਤੁ ਮੈ ਟੋਲੇ ॥ har jaisaa purakh na labhee sabh dekhiaa jagat mai ttole | No other being like the Lord God can be found; I have looked and searched over the whole world. - Guru Ramdas Ji
ਗੁਰਿ ਸਤਿਗੁਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਦ੍ਰਿੜਾਇਆ ਮਨੁ ਅਨਤ ਨ ਕਾਹੂ ਡੋਲੇ ॥ gur satigur naam drirraaeaa man anat na kaahoo ddole | The Guru, the True Guru, has implanted the Naam within me; my mind does not waver any more. - Guru Ramdas Ji
ਜਨੁ ਨਾਨਕੁ ਹਰਿ ਕਾ ਦਾਸੁ ਹੈ ਗੁਰ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਕੇ ਗੋਲ ਗੋਲੇ ॥੨॥ jan naanak har kaa daas hai gur satigur ke gol gole |2| Servant Nanak is the Lord’s slave, the slave of the slaves of the Guru, the True Guru. ||2|| - Guru Ramdas Ji

ਤੁਧੁ ਆਪੇ ਖੇਲੁ ਰਚਾਇ ਤੁਧੁ ਆਪਿ ਸਵਾਰਿਆ ॥ tudh aape khel rachaae tudh aap savaariaa | You Yourself have arranged the play, and You Yourself arrange it. - Guru Ramdas Ji
ਦਾਤਾ ਕਰਤਾ ਆਪਿ ਆਪਿ ਭੋਗਣਹਾਰਿਆ ॥ daataa karataa aap aap bhoganahaariaa | You Yourself are the Giver and the Creator; You Yourself are the Enjoyer. - Guru Ramdas Ji
ਸਭੁ ਤੇਰਾ ਸਬਦੁ ਵਰਤੈ ਉਪਾਵਣਹਾਰਿਆ ॥ sabh teraa sabad varatai upaavanahaariaa | The Word of Your Shabad is pervading everywhere, O Creator Lord. - Guru Ramdas Ji
ਹਉ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਸਦਾ ਸਲਾਹੀ ਗੁਰ ਕਉ ਵਾਰਿਆ ॥੧॥ hau guramukh sadaa salaahee gur kau vaariaa |1| As Gurmukh, I ever praise the Lord; I am a sacrifice to the Guru. ||1|| - Guru Ramdas Ji
