ਤਿਨਾ ਪਿਛੈ ਛੁਟੀਐ ਪਿਆਰੇ ਜੋ ਸਾਚੀ ਸਰਣਾਇ ॥੨॥ tinaa pichhai chhutteeai piaare jo saachee saranaae |2| We are saved by following those, O Beloved, who seek the Sanctuary of the True Lord. ||2|| - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਮਿਠਾ ਕਰਿ ਕੈ ਖਾਇਆ ਪਿਆਰੇ ਤਿਨਿ ਤਨਿ ਕੀਤਾ ਰੋਗੁ ॥ mitthaa kar kai khaaeaa piaare tin tan keetaa rog | He thinks that his food is so sweet, O Beloved, but it makes his body ill. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਕਉੜਾ ਹੋਇ ਪਤਿਸਟਿਆ ਪਿਆਰੇ ਤਿਸ ਤੇ ਉਪਜਿਆ ਸੋਗੁ ॥ kaurraa hoe patisattiaa piaare tis te upajiaa sog | It turns out to be bitter, O Beloved, and it produces only sadness. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਭੋਗ ਭੁੰਚਾਇ ਭੁਲਾਇਅਨੁ ਪਿਆਰੇ ਉਤਰੈ ਨਹੀ ਵਿਜੋਗੁ ॥ bhog bhunchaae bhulaaeian piaare utarai nahee vijog | The Lord leads him astray in the enjoyment of pleasures, O Beloved, and so his sense of separation does not depart. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਜੋ ਗੁਰ ਮੇਲਿ ਉਧਾਰਿਆ ਪਿਆਰੇ ਤਿਨ ਧੁਰੇ ਪਇਆ ਸੰਜੋਗੁ ॥੩॥ jo gur mel udhaariaa piaare tin dhure peaa sanjog |3| Those who meet the Guru are saved, O Beloved; this is their pre-ordained destiny. ||3|| - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਮਾਇਆ ਲਾਲਚਿ ਅਟਿਆ ਪਿਆਰੇ ਚਿਤਿ ਨ ਆਵਹਿ ਮੂਲਿ ॥ maaeaa laalach attiaa piaare chit na aaveh mool | He is filled with longing for Maya, O Beloved, and so the Lord does not ever come into his mind. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਜਿਨ ਤੂ ਵਿਸਰਹਿ ਪਾਰਬ੍ਰਹਮ ਸੁਆਮੀ ਸੇ ਤਨ ਹੋਏ ਧੂੜਿ ॥ jin too visareh paarabraham suaamee se tan hoe dhoorr | Those who forget You, O Supreme Lord Master, their bodies turn to dust. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਬਿਲਲਾਟ ਕਰਹਿ ਬਹੁਤੇਰਿਆ ਪਿਆਰੇ ਉਤਰੈ ਨਾਹੀ ਸੂਲੁ ॥ bilalaatt kareh bahuteriaa piaare utarai naahee sool | They cry out and scream horribly, O Beloved, but their torment does not end. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਜੋ ਗੁਰ ਮੇਲਿ ਸਵਾਰਿਆ ਪਿਆਰੇ ਤਿਨ ਕਾ ਰਹਿਆ ਮੂਲੁ ॥੪॥ jo gur mel savaariaa piaare tin kaa rahiaa mool |4| Those who meet the Guru, and reform themselves, O Beloved, their capital remains intact. ||4|| - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਸਾਕਤ ਸੰਗੁ ਨ ਕੀਜਈ ਪਿਆਰੇ ਜੇ ਕਾ ਪਾਰਿ ਵਸਾਇ ॥ saakat sang na keejee piaare je kaa paar vasaae | As far as possible, do not associate with the faithless cynics, O Beloved. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਜਿਸੁ ਮਿਲਿਐ ਹਰਿ ਵਿਸਰੈ ਪਿਆਰੇ ਸੋੁ ਮੁਹਿ ਕਾਲੈ ਉਠਿ ਜਾਇ ॥ jis miliai har visarai piaare suo muhi kaalai utth jaae | Meeting with them, the Lord is forgotten, O Beloved, and you rise and depart with a blackened face. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਮਨਮੁਖਿ ਢੋਈ ਨਹ ਮਿਲੈ ਪਿਆਰੇ ਦਰਗਹ ਮਿਲੈ ਸਜਾਇ ॥ manamukh dtoee neh milai piaare daragah milai sajaae | The self-willed manmukh finds no rest or shelter, O Beloved; in the Court of the Lord, they are punished. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਜੋ ਗੁਰ ਮੇਲਿ ਸਵਾਰਿਆ ਪਿਆਰੇ ਤਿਨਾ ਪੂਰੀ ਪਾਇ ॥੫॥ jo gur mel savaariaa piaare tinaa pooree paae |5| Those who meet with the Guru, and reform themselves, O Beloved, their affairs are resolved. ||5|| - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਸੰਜਮ ਸਹਸ ਸਿਆਣਪਾ ਪਿਆਰੇ ਇਕ ਨ ਚਲੀ ਨਾਲਿ ॥ sanjam sehas siaanapaa piaare ik na chalee naal | One may have thousands of clever tricks and techniques of austere self-discipline, O Beloved, but not even one of them will go with him. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਜੋ ਬੇਮੁਖ ਗੋਬਿੰਦ ਤੇ ਪਿਆਰੇ ਤਿਨ ਕੁਲਿ ਲਾਗੈ ਗਾਲਿ ॥ jo bemukh gobind te piaare tin kul laagai gaal | Those who turn their backs on the Lord of the Universe, O Beloved, their families are stained with disgrace. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਹੋਦੀ ਵਸਤੁ ਨ ਜਾਤੀਆ ਪਿਆਰੇ ਕੂੜੁ ਨ ਚਲੀ ਨਾਲਿ ॥ hodee vasat na jaateea piaare koorr na chalee naal | They do not realize that they do have Him , O Beloved; falsehood will not go with them. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਜਿਨਾ ਮਿਲਾਇਓਨੁ ਪਿਆਰੇ ਸਾਚਾ ਨਾਮੁ ਸਮਾਲਿ ॥੬॥ satigur jinaa milaaeon piaare saachaa naam samaal |6| Those who meet with the True Guru, O Beloved, dwell upon the True Name. ||6|| - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਸਤੁ ਸੰਤੋਖੁ ਗਿਆਨੁ ਧਿਆਨੁ ਪਿਆਰੇ ਜਿਸ ਨੋ ਨਦਰਿ ਕਰੇ ॥ sat santokh giaan dhiaan piaare jis no nadar kare | When the Lord casts His Glance of Grace, O Beloved, one is blessed with Truth, contentment, wisdom and meditation. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਅਨਦਿਨੁ ਕੀਰਤਨੁ ਗੁਣ ਰਵੈ ਪਿਆਰੇ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤਿ ਪੂਰ ਭਰੇ ॥ anadin keeratan gun ravai piaare amrit poor bhare | Night and day, he sings the Kirtan of the Lord’s Praises, O Beloved, totally filled with Ambrosial Nectar. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਦੁਖ ਸਾਗਰੁ ਤਿਨ ਲੰਘਿਆ ਪਿਆਰੇ ਭਵਜਲੁ ਪਾਰਿ ਪਰੇ ॥ dukh saagar tin langhiaa piaare bhavajal paar pare | He crosses over the sea of pain, O Beloved, and swims across the terrifying world-ocean. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਜਿਸੁ ਭਾਵੈ ਤਿਸੁ ਮੇਲਿ ਲੈਹਿ ਪਿਆਰੇ ਸੇਈ ਸਦਾ ਖਰੇ ॥੭॥ jis bhaavai tis mel laihi piaare seee sadaa khare |7| One who is pleasing to His Will, He unites with Himself, O Beloved; he is forever true. ||7|| - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਸੰਮ੍ਰਥ ਪੁਰਖੁ ਦਇਆਲ ਦੇਉ ਪਿਆਰੇ ਭਗਤਾ ਤਿਸ ਕਾ ਤਾਣੁ ॥ samrath purakh deaal deo piaare bhagataa tis kaa taan | The all-powerful Divine Lord is compassionate, O Beloved; He is the Support of His devotees. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਤਿਸੁ ਸਰਣਾਈ ਢਹਿ ਪਏ ਪਿਆਰੇ ਜਿ ਅੰਤਰਜਾਮੀ ਜਾਣੁ ॥ tis saranaaee dteh pe piaare ji antarajaamee jaan | I seek His Sanctuary, O Beloved; He is the Inner-knower, the Searcher of hearts. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਹਲਤੁ ਪਲਤੁ ਸਵਾਰਿਆ ਪਿਆਰੇ ਮਸਤਕਿ ਸਚੁ ਨੀਸਾਣੁ ॥ halat palat savaariaa piaare masatak sach neesaan | He has adorned me in this world and the next, O Beloved; He has placed the Emblem of Truth upon my forehead. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਸੋ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਕਦੇ ਨ ਵੀਸਰੈ ਪਿਆਰੇ ਨਾਨਕ ਸਦ ਕੁਰਬਾਣੁ ॥੮॥੨॥ so prabh kade na veesarai piaare naanak sad kurabaan |8|2| I shall never forget that God, O Beloved; Nanak is forever a sacrifice to Him. ||8||2|| - Guru Arjan Dev Ji

ਪਾਠੁ ਪੜਿਓ ਅਰੁ ਬੇਦੁ ਬੀਚਾਰਿਓ ਨਿਵਲਿ ਭੁਅੰਗਮ ਸਾਧੇ ॥ paatth parrio ar bed beechaario nival bhuangam saadhe | They read scriptures, and contemplate the Vedas; they practice the inner cleansing techniques of Yoga, and control of the breath. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਪੰਚ ਜਨਾ ਸਿਉ ਸੰਗੁ ਨ ਛੁਟਕਿਓ ਅਧਿਕ ਅਹੰਬੁਧਿ ਬਾਧੇ ॥੧॥ panch janaa siau sang na chhuttakio adhik ahanbudh baadhe |1| But they cannot escape from the company of the five passions; they are increasingly bound to egotism. ||1|| - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਪਿਆਰੇ ਇਨ ਬਿਧਿ ਮਿਲਣੁ ਨ ਜਾਈ ਮੈ ਕੀਏ ਕਰਮ ਅਨੇਕਾ ॥ piaare in bidh milan na jaaee mai kee karam anekaa | O Beloved, this is not the way to meet the Lord; I have performed these rituals so many times. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਹਾਰਿ ਪਰਿਓ ਸੁਆਮੀ ਕੈ ਦੁਆਰੈ ਦੀਜੈ ਬੁਧਿ ਬਿਬੇਕਾ ॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥ haar pario suaamee kai duaarai deejai budh bibekaa | rahaau | I have collapsed, exhausted, at the Door of my Lord Master; I pray that He may grant me a discerning intellect. ||Pause|| - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਮੋਨਿ ਭਇਓ ਕਰਪਾਤੀ ਰਹਿਓ ਨਗਨ ਫਿਰਿਓ ਬਨ ਮਾਹੀ ॥ mon bheo karapaatee rahio nagan firio ban maahee | One may remain silent and use his hands as begging bowls, and wander naked in the forest. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਤਟ ਤੀਰਥ ਸਭ ਧਰਤੀ ਭ੍ਰਮਿਓ ਦੁਬਿਧਾ ਛੁਟਕੈ ਨਾਹੀ ॥੨॥ tatt teerath sabh dharatee bhramio dubidhaa chhuttakai naahee |2| He may make pilgrimages to river banks and sacred shrines all over the world, but his sense of duality will not leave him. ||2|| - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
