ਸੋਰਠਿ ਮਹਲਾ ੯ ॥ soratth mahalaa 9 | Sorat’h, Ninth Mehl: - Guru Tegh Bahadur Ji
ਪ੍ਰੀਤਮ ਜਾਨਿ ਲੇਹੁ ਮਨ ਮਾਹੀ ॥ preetam jaan lehu man maahee | O dear friend, know this in your mind. - Guru Tegh Bahadur Ji
ਅਪਨੇ ਸੁਖ ਸਿਉ ਹੀ ਜਗੁ ਫਾਂਧਿਓ ਕੋ ਕਾਹੂ ਕੋ ਨਾਹੀ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥ apane sukh siau hee jag faandhio ko kaahoo ko naahee |1| rahaau | The world is entangled in its own pleasures; no one is for anyone else. ||1||Pause|| - Guru Tegh Bahadur Ji
ਸੁਖ ਮੈ ਆਨਿ ਬਹੁਤੁ ਮਿਲਿ ਬੈਠਤ ਰਹਤ ਚਹੂ ਦਿਸਿ ਘੇਰੈ ॥ sukh mai aan bahut mil baitthat rehat chahoo dis gherai | In good times, many come and sit together, surrounding you on all four sides. - Guru Tegh Bahadur Ji
ਬਿਪਤਿ ਪਰੀ ਸਭ ਹੀ ਸੰਗੁ ਛਾਡਿਤ ਕੋਊ ਨ ਆਵਤ ਨੇਰੈ ॥੧॥ bipat paree sabh hee sang chhaaddit koaoo na aavat nerai |1| But when hard times come, they all leave, and no one comes near you. ||1|| - Guru Tegh Bahadur Ji
ਘਰ ਕੀ ਨਾਰਿ ਬਹੁਤੁ ਹਿਤੁ ਜਾ ਸਿਉ ਸਦਾ ਰਹਤ ਸੰਗ ਲਾਗੀ ॥ ghar kee naar bahut hit jaa siau sadaa rehat sang laagee | Your wife, whom you love so much, and who has remained ever attached to you, - Guru Tegh Bahadur Ji
ਜਬ ਹੀ ਹੰਸ ਤਜੀ ਇਹ ਕਾਂਇਆ ਪ੍ਰੇਤ ਪ੍ਰੇਤ ਕਰਿ ਭਾਗੀ ॥੨॥ jab hee hans tajee ih kaaneaa pret pret kar bhaagee |2| runs away crying, “Ghost! Ghost!”, as soon as the swan-soul leaves this body. ||2|| - Guru Tegh Bahadur Ji
ਇਹ ਬਿਧਿ ਕੋ ਬਿਉਹਾਰੁ ਬਨਿਓ ਹੈ ਜਾ ਸਿਉ ਨੇਹੁ ਲਗਾਇਓ ॥ eih bidh ko biauhaar banio hai jaa siau nehu lagaaeo | This is the way they act - those whom we love so much. - Guru Tegh Bahadur Ji
ਅੰਤ ਬਾਰ ਨਾਨਕ ਬਿਨੁ ਹਰਿ ਜੀ ਕੋਊ ਕਾਮਿ ਨ ਆਇਓ ॥੩॥੧੨॥੧੩੯॥ ant baar naanak bin har jee koaoo kaam na aaeo |3|12|139| At the very last moment, O Nanak, no one is any use at all, except the Dear Lord. ||3||12||139|| - Guru Tegh Bahadur Ji

ੴ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਪ੍ਰਸਾਦਿ ॥ ik oankaar satigur prasaad | One Universal Creator God. By The Grace Of The True Guru: - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਦੁਬਿਧਾ ਨ ਪੜਉ ਹਰਿ ਬਿਨੁ ਹੋਰੁ ਨ ਪੂਜਉ ਮੜੈ ਮਸਾਣਿ ਨ ਜਾਈ ॥ dubidhaa na prrau har bin hor na poojau marrai masaan na jaaee | I am not torn by duality, because I do not worship any other than the Lord; I do not visit tombs or crematoriums. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਤ੍ਰਿਸਨਾ ਰਾਚਿ ਨ ਪਰ ਘਰਿ ਜਾਵਾ ਤ੍ਰਿਸਨਾ ਨਾਮਿ ਬੁਝਾਈ ॥ trisanaa raach na par ghar jaavaa trisanaa naam bujhaaee | I do not enter the houses of strangers, engrossed in desire. The Naam, the Name of the Lord, has satisfied my desires. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਘਰ ਭੀਤਰਿ ਘਰੁ ਗੁਰੂ ਦਿਖਾਇਆ ਸਹਜਿ ਰਤੇ ਮਨ ਭਾਈ ॥ ghar bheetar ghar guroo dikhaaeaa sehaj rate man bhaaee | Deep within my heart, the Guru has shown me the home of my being, and my mind is imbued with peace and poise, O Siblings of Destiny. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਤੂ ਆਪੇ ਦਾਨਾ ਆਪੇ ਬੀਨਾ ਤੂ ਦੇਵਹਿ ਮਤਿ ਸਾਈ ॥੧॥ too aape daanaa aape beenaa too deveh mat saaee |1| You Yourself are all-knowing, and You Yourself are all-seeing; You alone bestow intelligence, O Lord. ||1|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਮਨੁ ਬੈਰਾਗਿ ਰਤਉ ਬੈਰਾਗੀ ਸਬਦਿ ਮਨੁ ਬੇਧਿਆ ਮੇਰੀ ਮਾਈ ॥ man bairaag rtau bairaagee sabad man bedhiaa meree maaee | My mind is detached, imbued with detachment; the Word of the Shabad has pierced my mind, O my mother. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਅੰਤਰਿ ਜੋਤਿ ਨਿਰੰਤਰਿ ਬਾਣੀ ਸਾਚੇ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਸਿਉ ਲਿਵ ਲਾਈ ॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥ antar jot nirantar baanee saache saahib siau liv laaee | rahaau | God’s Light shines continually within the nucleus of my deepest self; I am lovingly attached to the Bani, the Word of the True Lord Master. ||Pause|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਅਸੰਖ ਬੈਰਾਗੀ ਕਹਹਿ ਬੈਰਾਗ ਸੋ ਬੈਰਾਗੀ ਜਿ ਖਸਮੈ ਭਾਵੈ ॥ asankh bairaagee kaheh bairaag so bairaagee ji khasamai bhaavai | Countless detached renunciates talk of detachment and renunciation, but he alone is a true renunciate, who is pleasing to the Lord Master. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਹਿਰਦੈ ਸਬਦਿ ਸਦਾ ਭੈ ਰਚਿਆ ਗੁਰ ਕੀ ਕਾਰ ਕਮਾਵੈ ॥ hiradai sabad sadaa bhai rachiaa gur kee kaar kamaavai | The Word of the Shabad is ever in his heart; he is absorbed in the Fear of God, and he works to serve the Guru. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਏਕੋ ਚੇਤੈ ਮਨੂਆ ਨ ਡੋਲੈ ਧਾਵਤੁ ਵਰਜਿ ਰਹਾਵੈ ॥ eko chetai manooaa na ddolai dhaavat varaj rahaavai | He remembers the One Lord, his mind does not waver, and he restrains its wanderings. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਸਹਜੇ ਮਾਤਾ ਸਦਾ ਰੰਗਿ ਰਾਤਾ ਸਾਚੇ ਕੇ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਵੈ ॥੨॥ sahaje maataa sadaa rang raataa saache ke gun gaavai |2| He is intoxicated with celestial bliss, and is ever imbued with the Lord’s Love; he sings the Glorious Praises of the True Lord. ||2|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਮਨੂਆ ਪਉਣੁ ਬਿੰਦੁ ਸੁਖਵਾਸੀ ਨਾਮਿ ਵਸੈ ਸੁਖ ਭਾਈ ॥ manooaa paun bind sukhavaasee naam vasai sukh bhaaee | The mind is like the wind, but if it comes to rest in peace, even for an instant, then he shall abide in the peace of the Name, O Siblings of Destiny. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਜਿਹਬਾ ਨੇਤ੍ਰ ਸੋਤ੍ਰ ਸਚਿ ਰਾਤੇ ਜਲਿ ਬੂਝੀ ਤੁਝਹਿ ਬੁਝਾਈ ॥ jihabaa netr sotr sach raate jal boojhee tujheh bujhaaee | His tongue, eyes and ears are imbued with Truth; O Lord, You quench the fires of desire. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਆਸ ਨਿਰਾਸ ਰਹੈ ਬੈਰਾਗੀ ਨਿਜ ਘਰਿ ਤਾੜੀ ਲਾਈ ॥ aas niraas rahai bairaagee nij ghar taarree laaee | In hope, the renunciate remains free of hopes; in the home of his own inner self, he is absorbed in the trance of deep meditation. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਭਿਖਿਆ ਨਾਮਿ ਰਜੇ ਸੰਤੋਖੀ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤੁ ਸਹਜਿ ਪੀਆਈ ॥੩॥ bhikhiaa naam raje santokhee amrit sehaj peeaee |3| He remains content, satisfied with the charity of the Naam; he drinks in the Ambrosial Amrit with ease. ||3|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਦੁਬਿਧਾ ਵਿਚਿ ਬੈਰਾਗੁ ਨ ਹੋਵੀ ਜਬ ਲਗੁ ਦੂਜੀ ਰਾਈ ॥ dubidhaa vich bairaag na hovee jab lag doojee raaee | There is no renunciation in duality, as long as there is even a particle of duality. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਸਭੁ ਜਗੁ ਤੇਰਾ ਤੂ ਏਕੋ ਦਾਤਾ ਅਵਰੁ ਨ ਦੂਜਾ ਭਾਈ ॥ sabh jag teraa too eko daataa avar na doojaa bhaaee | The whole world is Yours, Lord; You alone are the Giver. There is not any other, O Siblings of Destiny. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਮਨਮੁਖਿ ਜੰਤ ਦੁਖਿ ਸਦਾ ਨਿਵਾਸੀ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਦੇ ਵਡਿਆਈ ॥ manamukh jant dukh sadaa nivaasee guramukh de vaddiaaee | The self-willed manmukh dwells in misery forever, while the Lord bestows greatness upon the Gurmukh. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਅਪਰ ਅਪਾਰ ਅਗੰਮ ਅਗੋਚਰ ਕਹਣੈ ਕੀਮ ਨ ਪਾਈ ॥੪॥ apar apaar agam agochar kahanai keem na paaee |4| God is infinite, endless, inaccessible and unfathomable; His worth cannot be described. ||4|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਸੁੰਨ ਸਮਾਧਿ ਮਹਾ ਪਰਮਾਰਥੁ ਤੀਨਿ ਭਵਣ ਪਤਿ ਨਾਮੰ ॥ sun samaadh mahaa paramaarath teen bhavan pat naaman | The consciousness in deep Samaadhi, the Supreme Being, the Lord of the three worlds - these are Your Names, Lord. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਮਸਤਕਿ ਲੇਖੁ ਜੀਆ ਜਗਿ ਜੋਨੀ ਸਿਰਿ ਸਿਰਿ ਲੇਖੁ ਸਹਾਮੰ ॥ masatak lekh jeea jag jonee sir sir lekh sahaaman | The creatures born into this world have their destiny inscribed upon their foreheads; they experience according to their destinies. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਕਰਮ ਸੁਕਰਮ ਕਰਾਏ ਆਪੇ ਆਪੇ ਭਗਤਿ ਦ੍ਰਿੜਾਮੰ ॥ karam sukaram karaae aape aape bhagat drirraaman | The Lord Himself causes them to do good and bad deeds; He Himself makes them steadfast in devotional worship. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਮਨਿ ਮੁਖਿ ਜੂਠਿ ਲਹੈ ਭੈ ਮਾਨੰ ਆਪੇ ਗਿਆਨੁ ਅਗਾਮੰ ॥੫॥ man mukh jootth lahai bhai maanan aape giaan agaaman |5| The filth of their mind and mouth is washed off when they live in the Fear of God; the inaccessible Lord Himself blesses them with spiritual wisdom. ||5|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
