ਸੋਰਠਿ ਮਹਲਾ ੩ ॥ soratth mahalaa 3 | Sorat’h, Third Mehl: - Guru Amardas Ji
ਹਰਿ ਜੀਉ ਤੁਧੁ ਨੋ ਸਦਾ ਸਾਲਾਹੀ ਪਿਆਰੇ ਜਿਚਰੁ ਘਟ ਅੰਤਰਿ ਹੈ ਸਾਸਾ ॥ har jeeo tudh no sadaa saalaahee piaare jichar ghatt antar hai saasaa | Dear Beloved Lord, I praise You continually, as long as there is the breath within my body. - Guru Amardas Ji
ਇਕੁ ਪਲੁ ਖਿਨੁ ਵਿਸਰਹਿ ਤੂ ਸੁਆਮੀ ਜਾਣਉ ਬਰਸ ਪਚਾਸਾ ॥ eik pal khin visareh too suaamee jaanau baras pachaasaa | If I were to forget You, for a moment, even for an instant, O Lord Master, it would be like fifty years for me. - Guru Amardas Ji
ਹਮ ਮੂੜ ਮੁਗਧ ਸਦਾ ਸੇ ਭਾਈ ਗੁਰ ਕੈ ਸਬਦਿ ਪ੍ਰਗਾਸਾ ॥੧॥ ham moorr mugadh sadaa se bhaaee gur kai sabad pragaasaa |1| I was always such a fool and an idiot, O Siblings of Destiny, but now, through the Word of the Guru’s Shabad, my mind is enlightened. ||1|| - Guru Amardas Ji
ਹਰਿ ਜੀਉ ਤੁਮ ਆਪੇ ਦੇਹੁ ਬੁਝਾਈ ॥ har jeeo tum aape dehu bujhaaee | Dear Lord, You Yourself bestow understanding. - Guru Amardas Ji
ਹਰਿ ਜੀਉ ਤੁਧੁ ਵਿਟਹੁ ਵਾਰਿਆ ਸਦ ਹੀ ਤੇਰੇ ਨਾਮ ਵਿਟਹੁ ਬਲਿ ਜਾਈ ॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥ har jeeo tudh vittahu vaariaa sad hee tere naam vittahu bal jaaee | rahaau | Dear Lord, I am forever a sacrifice to You; I am dedicated and devoted to Your Name. ||Pause|| - Guru Amardas Ji
ਹਮ ਸਬਦਿ ਮੁਏ ਸਬਦਿ ਮਾਰਿ ਜੀਵਾਲੇ ਭਾਈ ਸਬਦੇ ਹੀ ਮੁਕਤਿ ਪਾਈ ॥ ham sabad mue sabad maar jeevaale bhaaee sabade hee mukat paaee | I have died in the Word of the Shabad, and through the Shabad, I am dead while yet alive, O Siblings of Destiny; through the Shabad, I have been liberated. - Guru Amardas Ji
ਸਬਦੇ ਮਨੁ ਤਨੁ ਨਿਰਮਲੁ ਹੋਆ ਹਰਿ ਵਸਿਆ ਮਨਿ ਆਈ ॥ sabade man tan niramal hoaa har vasiaa man aaee | Through the Shabad, my mind and body have been purified, and the Lord has come to dwell within my mind. - Guru Amardas Ji
ਸਬਦੁ ਗੁਰ ਦਾਤਾ ਜਿਤੁ ਮਨੁ ਰਾਤਾ ਹਰਿ ਸਿਉ ਰਹਿਆ ਸਮਾਈ ॥੨॥ sabad gur daataa jit man raataa har siau rahiaa samaaee |2| The Guru is the Giver of the Shabad; my mind is imbued with it, and I remain absorbed in the Lord. ||2|| - Guru Amardas Ji
ਸਬਦੁ ਨ ਜਾਣਹਿ ਸੇ ਅੰਨੇ ਬੋਲੇ ਸੇ ਕਿਤੁ ਆਏ ਸੰਸਾਰਾ ॥ sabad na jaaneh se ane bole se kit aae sansaaraa | Those who do not know the Shabad are blind and deaf; why did they even bother to come into the world? - Guru Amardas Ji
ਹਰਿ ਰਸੁ ਨ ਪਾਇਆ ਬਿਰਥਾ ਜਨਮੁ ਗਵਾਇਆ ਜੰਮਹਿ ਵਾਰੋ ਵਾਰਾ ॥ har ras na paaeaa birathaa janam gavaaeaa jameh vaaro vaaraa | They do not obtain the subtle essence of the Lord’s elixir; they waste away their lives, and are reincarnated over and over again. - Guru Amardas Ji
ਬਿਸਟਾ ਕੇ ਕੀੜੇ ਬਿਸਟਾ ਮਾਹਿ ਸਮਾਣੇ ਮਨਮੁਖ ਮੁਗਧ ਗੁਬਾਰਾ ॥੩॥ bisattaa ke keerre bisattaa maeh samaane manamukh mugadh gubaaraa |3| The blind, idiotic, self-willed manmukhs are like maggots in manure, and in manure they rot away. ||3|| - Guru Amardas Ji
ਆਪੇ ਕਰਿ ਵੇਖੈ ਮਾਰਗਿ ਲਾਏ ਭਾਈ ਤਿਸੁ ਬਿਨੁ ਅਵਰੁ ਨ ਕੋਈ ॥ aape kar vekhai maarag laae bhaaee tis bin avar na koee | The Lord Himself creates us, watches over us, and places us on the Path, O Siblings of Destiny; there is no one other than Him. - Guru Amardas Ji
ਜੋ ਧੁਰਿ ਲਿਖਿਆ ਸੁ ਕੋਇ ਨ ਮੇਟੈ ਭਾਈ ਕਰਤਾ ਕਰੇ ਸੁ ਹੋਈ ॥ jo dhur likhiaa su koe na mettai bhaaee karataa kare su hoee | No one can erase that which is pre-ordained, O Siblings of Destiny; whatever the Creator wills, comes to pass. - Guru Amardas Ji
ਨਾਨਕ ਨਾਮੁ ਵਸਿਆ ਮਨ ਅੰਤਰਿ ਭਾਈ ਅਵਰੁ ਨ ਦੂਜਾ ਕੋਈ ॥੪॥੪॥ naanak naam vasiaa man antar bhaaee avar na doojaa koee |4|4| O Nanak, the Naam, the Name of the Lord, abides deep within the mind; O Siblings of Destiny, there is no other at all. ||4||4|| - Guru Amardas Ji

ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਭਗਤਿ ਕਰਹਿ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਭਾਵਹਿ ਅਨਦਿਨੁ ਨਾਮੁ ਵਖਾਣੇ ॥ guramukh bhagat kareh prabh bhaaveh anadin naam vakhaane | The Gurmukhs practice devotional worship, and become pleasing to God; night and day, they chant the Naam, the Name of the Lord. - Guru Amardas Ji
ਭਗਤਾ ਕੀ ਸਾਰ ਕਰਹਿ ਆਪਿ ਰਾਖਹਿ ਜੋ ਤੇਰੈ ਮਨਿ ਭਾਣੇ ॥ bhagataa kee saar kareh aap raakheh jo terai man bhaane | You Yourself protect and take care of Your devotees, who are pleasing to Your Mind. - Guru Amardas Ji
ਤੂ ਗੁਣਦਾਤਾ ਸਬਦਿ ਪਛਾਤਾ ਗੁਣ ਕਹਿ ਗੁਣੀ ਸਮਾਣੇ ॥੧॥ too gunadaataa sabad pachhaataa gun keh gunee samaane |1| You are the Giver of virtue, realized through the Word of Your Shabad. Uttering Your Glories, we merge with You, O Glorious Lord. ||1|| - Guru Amardas Ji
ਮਨ ਮੇਰੇ ਹਰਿ ਜੀਉ ਸਦਾ ਸਮਾਲਿ ॥ man mere har jeeo sadaa samaal | O my mind, remember always the Dear Lord. - Guru Amardas Ji
ਅੰਤ ਕਾਲਿ ਤੇਰਾ ਬੇਲੀ ਹੋਵੈ ਸਦਾ ਨਿਬਹੈ ਤੇਰੈ ਨਾਲਿ ॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥ ant kaal teraa belee hovai sadaa nibahai terai naal | rahaau | At the very last moment, He alone shall be your best friend; He shall always stand by you. ||Pause|| - Guru Amardas Ji
ਦੁਸਟ ਚਉਕੜੀ ਸਦਾ ਕੂੜੁ ਕਮਾਵਹਿ ਨਾ ਬੂਝਹਿ ਵੀਚਾਰੇ ॥ dusatt chaukarree sadaa koorr kamaaveh naa boojheh veechaare | The gathering of the wicked enemies shall always practice falsehood; they do not contemplate understanding. - Guru Amardas Ji
ਨਿੰਦਾ ਦੁਸਟੀ ਤੇ ਕਿਨਿ ਫਲੁ ਪਾਇਆ ਹਰਣਾਖਸ ਨਖਹਿ ਬਿਦਾਰੇ ॥ nindaa dusattee te kin fal paaeaa haranaakhas nakheh bidaare | Who can obtain fruit from the slander of evil enemies? Remember that Harnaakhash was torn apart by the Lord’s claws. - Guru Amardas Ji
ਪ੍ਰਹਿਲਾਦੁ ਜਨੁ ਸਦ ਹਰਿ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਵੈ ਹਰਿ ਜੀਉ ਲਏ ਉਬਾਰੇ ॥੨॥ prahilaad jan sad har gun gaavai har jeeo le ubaare |2| Prahlaad, the Lord’s humble servant, constantly sang the Glorious Praises of the Lord, and the Dear Lord saved him. ||2|| - Guru Amardas Ji
ਆਪਸ ਕਉ ਬਹੁ ਭਲਾ ਕਰਿ ਜਾਣਹਿ ਮਨਮੁਖਿ ਮਤਿ ਨ ਕਾਈ ॥ aapas kau bahu bhalaa kar jaaneh manamukh mat na kaaee | The self-willed manmukhs see themselves as being very virtuous; they have absolutely no understanding at all. - Guru Amardas Ji
ਸਾਧੂ ਜਨ ਕੀ ਨਿੰਦਾ ਵਿਆਪੇ ਜਾਸਨਿ ਜਨਮੁ ਗਵਾਈ ॥ saadhoo jan kee nindaa viaape jaasan janam gavaaee | They indulge in slander of the humble spiritual people; they waste their lives away, and then they have to depart. - Guru Amardas Ji
ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮੁ ਕਦੇ ਚੇਤਹਿ ਨਾਹੀ ਅੰਤਿ ਗਏ ਪਛੁਤਾਈ ॥੩॥ raam naam kade cheteh naahee ant ge pachhutaaee |3| They never think of the Lord’s Name, and in the end, they depart, regretting and repenting. ||3|| - Guru Amardas Ji
ਸਫਲੁ ਜਨਮੁ ਭਗਤਾ ਕਾ ਕੀਤਾ ਗੁਰ ਸੇਵਾ ਆਪਿ ਲਾਏ ॥ safal janam bhagataa kaa keetaa gur sevaa aap laae | The Lord makes the lives of His devotees fruitful; He Himself links them to the Guru’s service. - Guru Amardas Ji
ਸਬਦੇ ਰਾਤੇ ਸਹਜੇ ਮਾਤੇ ਅਨਦਿਨੁ ਹਰਿ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਏ ॥ sabade raate sahaje maate anadin har gun gaae | Imbued with the Word of the Shabad, and intoxicated with celestial bliss, night and day, they sing the Glorious Praises of the Lord. - Guru Amardas Ji
ਨਾਨਕ ਦਾਸੁ ਕਹੈ ਬੇਨੰਤੀ ਹਉ ਲਾਗਾ ਤਿਨ ਕੈ ਪਾਏ ॥੪॥੫॥ naanak daas kahai benantee hau laagaa tin kai paae |4|5| Slave Nanak utters this prayer: O Lord, please, let me fall at their feet. ||4||5|| - Guru Amardas Ji

ਸੋ ਸਿਖੁ ਸਖਾ ਬੰਧਪੁ ਹੈ ਭਾਈ ਜਿ ਗੁਰ ਕੇ ਭਾਣੇ ਵਿਚਿ ਆਵੈ ॥ so sikh sakhaa bandhap hai bhaaee ji gur ke bhaane vich aavai | He alone is a Sikh, a friend, a relative and a sibling, who walks in the Way of the Guru’s Will. - Guru Amardas Ji
ਆਪਣੈ ਭਾਣੈ ਜੋ ਚਲੈ ਭਾਈ ਵਿਛੁੜਿ ਚੋਟਾ ਖਾਵੈ ॥ aapanai bhaanai jo chalai bhaaee vichhurr chottaa khaavai | One who walks according to his own will, O Siblings of Destiny, suffers separation from the Lord, and shall be punished. - Guru Amardas Ji
ਬਿਨੁ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਸੁਖੁ ਕਦੇ ਨ ਪਾਵੈ ਭਾਈ ਫਿਰਿ ਫਿਰਿ ਪਛੋਤਾਵੈ ॥੧॥ bin satigur sukh kade na paavai bhaaee fir fir pachhotaavai |1| Without the True Guru, peace is never obtained, O Siblings of Destiny; again and again, he regrets and repents. ||1|| - Guru Amardas Ji
ਹਰਿ ਕੇ ਦਾਸ ਸੁਹੇਲੇ ਭਾਈ ॥ har ke daas suhele bhaaee | The Lord’s slaves are happy, O Siblings of Destiny. - Guru Amardas Ji
