ਗੁਣ ਮਹਿ ਗੁਣੀ ਸਮਾਏ ਜਿਸੁ ਆਪਿ ਬੁਝਾਏ ਲਾਹਾ ਭਗਤਿ ਸੈਸਾਰੇ ॥ gun meh gunee samaae jis aap bujhaae laahaa bhagat saisaare | One’s virtues merge into the virtues of the Lord; he comes to understand his own self. He earns the profit of devotional worship in this world. - Guru Amardas Ji
ਬਿਨੁ ਭਗਤੀ ਸੁਖੁ ਨ ਹੋਈ ਦੂਜੈ ਪਤਿ ਖੋਈ ਗੁਰਮਤਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਅਧਾਰੇ ॥ bin bhagatee sukh na hoee doojai pat khoee guramat naam adhaare | Without devotion, there is no peace; through duality, one’s honor is lost, but under Guru’s Instruction, he is blessed with the Support of the Naam. - Guru Amardas Ji
ਵਖਰੁ ਨਾਮੁ ਸਦਾ ਲਾਭੁ ਹੈ ਜਿਸ ਨੋ ਏਤੁ ਵਾਪਾਰਿ ਲਾਏ ॥ vakhar naam sadaa laabh hai jis no et vaapaar laae | He ever earns the profit of the merchandise of the Naam, whom the Lord employs in this Trade. - Guru Amardas Ji
ਰਤਨ ਪਦਾਰਥ ਵਣਜੀਅਹਿ ਜਾਂ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਦੇਇ ਬੁਝਾਏ ॥੧॥ ratan padaarath vanajeeeh jaan satigur dee bujhaae |1| He purchases the jewel, the invaluable treasure, unto whom the True Guru has given this understanding. ||1|| - Guru Amardas Ji
ਮਾਇਆ ਮੋਹੁ ਸਭੁ ਦੁਖੁ ਹੈ ਖੋਟਾ ਇਹੁ ਵਾਪਾਰਾ ਰਾਮ ॥ maaeaa mohu sabh dukh hai khottaa ihu vaapaaraa raam | The love of Maya is totally painful; this is a bad deal. - Guru Amardas Ji
ਕੂੜੁ ਬੋਲਿ ਬਿਖੁ ਖਾਵਣੀ ਬਹੁ ਵਧਹਿ ਵਿਕਾਰਾ ਰਾਮ ॥ koorr bol bikh khaavanee bahu vadheh vikaaraa raam | Speaking falsehood, one eats poison, and the evil within increases greatly. - Guru Amardas Ji
ਬਹੁ ਵਧਹਿ ਵਿਕਾਰਾ ਸਹਸਾ ਇਹੁ ਸੰਸਾਰਾ ਬਿਨੁ ਨਾਵੈ ਪਤਿ ਖੋਈ ॥ bahu vadheh vikaaraa sahasaa ihu sansaaraa bin naavai pat khoee | The evil within increases greatly, in this world of doubt; without the Name, one’s honor is lost. - Guru Amardas Ji
ਪੜਿ ਪੜਿ ਪੰਡਿਤ ਵਾਦੁ ਵਖਾਣਹਿ ਬਿਨੁ ਬੂਝੇ ਸੁਖੁ ਨ ਹੋਈ ॥ parr parr panddit vaad vakhaaneh bin boojhe sukh na hoee | Reading and studying, the religious scholars argue and debate; but without understanding, there is no peace. - Guru Amardas Ji
ਆਵਣ ਜਾਣਾ ਕਦੇ ਨ ਚੂਕੈ ਮਾਇਆ ਮੋਹ ਪਿਆਰਾ ॥ aavan jaanaa kade na chookai maaeaa moh piaaraa | Their comings and goings never end; emotional attachment to Maya is dear to them. - Guru Amardas Ji
ਮਾਇਆ ਮੋਹੁ ਸਭੁ ਦੁਖੁ ਹੈ ਖੋਟਾ ਇਹੁ ਵਾਪਾਰਾ ॥੨॥ maaeaa mohu sabh dukh hai khottaa ihu vaapaaraa |2| The love of Maya is totally painful; this is a bad deal. ||2|| - Guru Amardas Ji
ਖੋਟੇ ਖਰੇ ਸਭਿ ਪਰਖੀਅਨਿ ਤਿਤੁ ਸਚੇ ਕੈ ਦਰਬਾਰਾ ਰਾਮ ॥ khotte khare sabh parakheean tith sache kai darabaaraa raam | The counterfeit and the genuine are all assayed in the Court of the True Lord. - Guru Amardas Ji
ਖੋਟੇ ਦਰਗਹ ਸੁਟੀਅਨਿ ਊਭੇ ਕਰਨਿ ਪੁਕਾਰਾ ਰਾਮ ॥ khotte daragah sutteean aoobhe karan pukaaraa raam | The counterfeit are cast out of the Court, and they stand there, crying out in misery. - Guru Amardas Ji
ਊਭੇ ਕਰਨਿ ਪੁਕਾਰਾ ਮੁਗਧ ਗਵਾਰਾ ਮਨਮੁਖਿ ਜਨਮੁ ਗਵਾਇਆ ॥ aoobhe karan pukaaraa mugadh gavaaraa manamukh janam gavaaeaa | They stand there, crying out in misery; the foolish, idiotic, self-willed manmukhs have wasted their lives. - Guru Amardas Ji
ਬਿਖਿਆ ਮਾਇਆ ਜਿਨਿ ਜਗਤੁ ਭੁਲਾਇਆ ਸਾਚਾ ਨਾਮੁ ਨ ਭਾਇਆ ॥ bikhiaa maaeaa jin jagat bhulaaeaa saachaa naam na bhaaeaa | Maya is the poison which has deluded the world; it does not love the Naam, the Name of the Lord. - Guru Amardas Ji
ਮਨਮੁਖ ਸੰਤਾ ਨਾਲਿ ਵੈਰੁ ਕਰਿ ਦੁਖੁ ਖਟੇ ਸੰਸਾਰਾ ॥ manamukh santaa naal vair kar dukh khatte sansaaraa | The self-willed manmukhs are resentful toward the Saints; they harvest only pain in this world. - Guru Amardas Ji
ਖੋਟੇ ਖਰੇ ਪਰਖੀਅਨਿ ਤਿਤੁ ਸਚੈ ਦਰਵਾਰਾ ਰਾਮ ॥੩॥ khotte khare parakheean tith sachai daravaaraa raam |3| The counterfeit and the genuine are assayed in that True Court of the Lord. ||3|| - Guru Amardas Ji
ਆਪਿ ਕਰੇ ਕਿਸੁ ਆਖੀਐ ਹੋਰੁ ਕਰਣਾ ਕਿਛੂ ਨ ਜਾਈ ਰਾਮ ॥ aap kare kis aakheeai hor karanaa kichhoo na jaaee raam | He Himself acts; who else should I ask? No one else can do anything. - Guru Amardas Ji
ਜਿਤੁ ਭਾਵੈ ਤਿਤੁ ਲਾਇਸੀ ਜਿਉ ਤਿਸ ਦੀ ਵਡਿਆਈ ਰਾਮ ॥ jit bhaavai tith laaeisee jiau tis dee vaddiaaee raam | As He pleases, He engages us; such is His glorious greatness. - Guru Amardas Ji
ਜਿਉ ਤਿਸ ਦੀ ਵਡਿਆਈ ਆਪਿ ਕਰਾਈ ਵਰੀਆਮੁ ਨ ਫੁਸੀ ਕੋਈ ॥ jiau tis dee vaddiaaee aap karaaee vareeaam na fusee koee | Such is His glorious greatness - He Himself causes all to act; no one is a warrior or a coward. - Guru Amardas Ji
ਜਗਜੀਵਨੁ ਦਾਤਾ ਕਰਮਿ ਬਿਧਾਤਾ ਆਪੇ ਬਖਸੇ ਸੋਈ ॥ jagajeevan daataa karam bidhaataa aape bakhase soee | The Life of the World, the Great Giver, the Architect of karma - He Himself grants forgiveness. - Guru Amardas Ji
ਗੁਰ ਪਰਸਾਦੀ ਆਪੁ ਗਵਾਈਐ ਨਾਨਕ ਨਾਮਿ ਪਤਿ ਪਾਈ ॥ gur parasaadee aap gavaaeeai naanak naam pat paaee | By Guru’s Grace, self-conceit is eradicated, O Nanak, and through the Naam, honor is obtained. - Guru Amardas Ji
ਆਪਿ ਕਰੇ ਕਿਸੁ ਆਖੀਐ ਹੋਰੁ ਕਰਣਾ ਕਿਛੂ ਨ ਜਾਈ ॥੪॥੪॥ aap kare kis aakheeai hor karanaa kichhoo na jaaee |4|4| He Himself acts; who else should I ask? No one else can do anything. ||4||4|| - Guru Amardas Ji
ਵਡਹੰਸੁ ਮਹਲਾ ੩ ॥ vaddahans mahalaa 3 | Wadahans, Third Mehl: - Guru Amardas Ji
ਸਚਾ ਸਉਦਾ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਹੈ ਸਚਾ ਵਾਪਾਰਾ ਰਾਮ ॥ sachaa saudaa har naam hai sachaa vaapaaraa raam | The True merchandise is the Lord’s Name. This is the true trade. - Guru Amardas Ji
ਗੁਰਮਤੀ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਵਣਜੀਐ ਅਤਿ ਮੋਲੁ ਅਫਾਰਾ ਰਾਮ ॥ guramatee har naam vanajeeai at mol afaaraa raam | Under Guru’s Instruction, we trade in the Lord’s Name; its value is very great. - Guru Amardas Ji
ਅਤਿ ਮੋਲੁ ਅਫਾਰਾ ਸਚ ਵਾਪਾਰਾ ਸਚਿ ਵਾਪਾਰਿ ਲਗੇ ਵਡਭਾਗੀ ॥ at mol afaaraa sach vaapaaraa sach vaapaar lage vaddabhaagee | The value of this true trade is very great; those who are engaged in the true trade are very fortunate. - Guru Amardas Ji
ਅੰਤਰਿ ਬਾਹਰਿ ਭਗਤੀ ਰਾਤੇ ਸਚਿ ਨਾਮਿ ਲਿਵ ਲਾਗੀ ॥ antar baahar bhagatee raate sach naam liv laagee | Inwardly and outwardly, they are imbued with devotion, and they enshrine love for the True Name. - Guru Amardas Ji
ਨਦਰਿ ਕਰੇ ਸੋਈ ਸਚੁ ਪਾਏ ਗੁਰ ਕੈ ਸਬਦਿ ਵੀਚਾਰਾ ॥ nadar kare soee sach paae gur kai sabad veechaaraa | One who is blessed with the Lord’s Favor, obtains Truth, and reflects upon the Word of the Guru’s Shabad. - Guru Amardas Ji
ਨਾਨਕ ਨਾਮਿ ਰਤੇ ਤਿਨ ਹੀ ਸੁਖੁ ਪਾਇਆ ਸਾਚੈ ਕੇ ਵਾਪਾਰਾ ॥੧॥ naanak naam rate tin hee sukh paaeaa saachai ke vaapaaraa |1| O Nanak, those who are imbued with the Name find peace; they deal only in the True Name. ||1|| - Guru Amardas Ji
ਹੰਉਮੈ ਮਾਇਆ ਮੈਲੁ ਹੈ ਮਾਇਆ ਮੈਲੁ ਭਰੀਜੈ ਰਾਮ ॥ hnaumai maaeaa mail hai maaeaa mail bhareejai raam | Egotistical involvement in Maya is filth; Maya is overflowing with filth. - Guru Amardas Ji
ਗੁਰਮਤੀ ਮਨੁ ਨਿਰਮਲਾ ਰਸਨਾ ਹਰਿ ਰਸੁ ਪੀਜੈ ਰਾਮ ॥ guramatee man niramalaa rasanaa har ras peejai raam | Under Guru’s Instruction, the mind is made pure and the tongue tastes the subtle essence of the Lord. - Guru Amardas Ji
ਰਸਨਾ ਹਰਿ ਰਸੁ ਪੀਜੈ ਅੰਤਰੁ ਭੀਜੈ ਸਾਚ ਸਬਦਿ ਬੀਚਾਰੀ ॥ rasanaa har ras peejai antar bheejai saach sabad beechaaree | The tongue tastes the subtle essence of the Lord, and deep within, the heart is drenched with His Love, contemplating the True Word of the Shabad. - Guru Amardas Ji
ਅੰਤਰਿ ਖੂਹਟਾ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤਿ ਭਰਿਆ ਸਬਦੇ ਕਾਢਿ ਪੀਐ ਪਨਿਹਾਰੀ ॥ antar khoohattaa amrit bhariaa sabade kaadt peeai panihaaree | Deep within, the well of the heart is overflowing with the Lord’s Ambrosial Nectar; the water-carrier draws and drinks in the water of the Shabad. - Guru Amardas Ji
ਜਿਸੁ ਨਦਰਿ ਕਰੇ ਸੋਈ ਸਚਿ ਲਾਗੈ ਰਸਨਾ ਰਾਮੁ ਰਵੀਜੈ ॥ jis nadar kare soee sach laagai rasanaa raam raveejai | One who is blessed with the Lord’s favor is attuned to the Truth; with his tongue, he chants the Lord’s Name. - Guru Amardas Ji
ਨਾਨਕ ਨਾਮਿ ਰਤੇ ਸੇ ਨਿਰਮਲ ਹੋਰ ਹਉਮੈ ਮੈਲੁ ਭਰੀਜੈ ॥੨॥ naanak naam rate se niramal hor haumai mail bhareejai |2| O Nanak, those who are attuned to the Naam, the Name of the Lord, are immaculate. The others are full of the filth of egotism. ||2|| - Guru Amardas Ji
ਪੰਡਿਤ ਜੋਤਕੀ ਸਭਿ ਪੜਿ ਪੜਿ ਕੂਕਦੇ ਕਿਸੁ ਪਹਿ ਕਰਹਿ ਪੁਕਾਰਾ ਰਾਮ ॥ panddit jotakee sabh parr parr kookade kis peh kareh pukaaraa raam | All the religious scholars and astrologers read and study, and argue and shout. Who are they trying to teach? - Guru Amardas Ji
