ਹਰਿ ਸੁਖਦਾਤਾ ਮਨਿ ਵਸੈ ਹਉਮੈ ਜਾਇ ਗੁਮਾਨੁ ॥ har sukhadaataa man vasai haumai jaae gumaan | The Lord, the Giver of peace, shall dwell in your mind, and your egotism and pride shall depart. - Guru Amardas Ji
ਨਾਨਕ ਨਦਰੀ ਪਾਈਐ ਤਾ ਅਨਦਿਨੁ ਲਾਗੈ ਧਿਆਨੁ ॥੨॥ naanak nadaree paaeeai taa anadin laagai dhiaan |2| O Nanak, when the Lord bestows His Glance of Grace, then, night and day, one centers his meditation on the Lord. ||2|| - Guru Amardas Ji

ਸਤੁ ਸੰਤੋਖੁ ਸਭੁ ਸਚੁ ਹੈ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਪਵਿਤਾ ॥ sat santokh sabh sach hai guramukh pavitaa | The Gurmukh is totally truthful, content and pure. - Guru Amardas Ji
ਅੰਦਰਹੁ ਕਪਟੁ ਵਿਕਾਰੁ ਗਇਆ ਮਨੁ ਸਹਜੇ ਜਿਤਾ ॥ andarahu kapatt vikaar geaa man sahaje jitaa | Deception and wickedness have departed from within him, and he easily conquers his mind. - Guru Amardas Ji
ਤਹ ਜੋਤਿ ਪ੍ਰਗਾਸੁ ਅਨੰਦ ਰਸੁ ਅਗਿਆਨੁ ਗਵਿਤਾ ॥ teh jot pragaas anand ras agiaan gavitaa | There, the Divine Light and the essence of bliss are manifest, and ignorance is eliminated. - Guru Amardas Ji
ਅਨਦਿਨੁ ਹਰਿ ਕੇ ਗੁਣ ਰਵੈ ਗੁਣ ਪਰਗਟੁ ਕਿਤਾ ॥ anadin har ke gun ravai gun paragatt kitaa | Night and day, he sings the Glorious Praises of the Lord, and manifests the excellence of the Lord. - Guru Amardas Ji
ਸਭਨਾ ਦਾਤਾ ਏਕੁ ਹੈ ਇਕੋ ਹਰਿ ਮਿਤਾ ॥੯॥ sabhanaa daataa ek hai iko har mitaa |9| The One Lord is the Giver of all; the Lord alone is our friend. ||9|| - Guru Amardas Ji

ਬ੍ਰਹਮੁ ਬਿੰਦੇ ਸੋ ਬ੍ਰਾਹਮਣੁ ਕਹੀਐ ਜਿ ਅਨਦਿਨੁ ਹਰਿ ਲਿਵ ਲਾਏ ॥ braham binde so braahaman kaheeai ji anadin har liv laae | One who understands God, who lovingly centers his mind on the Lord night and day, is called a Brahmin. - Guru Amardas Ji
ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਪੁਛੈ ਸਚੁ ਸੰਜਮੁ ਕਮਾਵੈ ਹਉਮੈ ਰੋਗੁ ਤਿਸੁ ਜਾਏ ॥ satigur puchhai sach sanjam kamaavai haumai rog tis jaae | Consulting the True Guru, he practices Truth and self-restraint, and he is rid of the disease of ego. - Guru Amardas Ji
ਹਰਿ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਵੈ ਗੁਣ ਸੰਗ੍ਰਹੈ ਜੋਤੀ ਜੋਤਿ ਮਿਲਾਏ ॥ har gun gaavai gun sangrahai jotee jot milaae | He sings the Glorious Praises of the Lord, and gathers in His Praises; his light is blended with the Light. - Guru Amardas Ji
ਇਸੁ ਜੁਗ ਮਹਿ ਕੋ ਵਿਰਲਾ ਬ੍ਰਹਮ ਗਿਆਨੀ ਜਿ ਹਉਮੈ ਮੇਟਿ ਸਮਾਏ ॥ eis jug meh ko viralaa braham giaanee ji haumai mett samaae | In this world, one who knows God is very rare; eradicating ego, he is absorbed in God. - Guru Amardas Ji
ਨਾਨਕ ਤਿਸ ਨੋ ਮਿਲਿਆ ਸਦਾ ਸੁਖੁ ਪਾਈਐ ਜਿ ਅਨਦਿਨੁ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਧਿਆਏ ॥੧॥ naanak tis no miliaa sadaa sukh paaeeai ji anadin har naam dhiaae |1| O Nanak, meeting him, peace is obtained; night and day, he meditates on the Lord’s Name. ||1|| - Guru Amardas Ji

ਅੰਤਰਿ ਕਪਟੁ ਮਨਮੁਖ ਅਗਿਆਨੀ ਰਸਨਾ ਝੂਠੁ ਬੋਲਾਇ ॥ antar kapatt manamukh agiaanee rasanaa jhootth bolaae | Within the ignorant self-willed manmukh is deception; with his tongue, he speaks lies. - Guru Amardas Ji
ਕਪਟਿ ਕੀਤੈ ਹਰਿ ਪੁਰਖੁ ਨ ਭੀਜੈ ਨਿਤ ਵੇਖੈ ਸੁਣੈ ਸੁਭਾਇ ॥ kapatt keetai har purakh na bheejai nit vekhai sunai subhaae | Practicing deception, he does not please the Lord God, who always sees and hears with natural ease. - Guru Amardas Ji
ਦੂਜੈ ਭਾਇ ਜਾਇ ਜਗੁ ਪਰਬੋਧੈ ਬਿਖੁ ਮਾਇਆ ਮੋਹ ਸੁਆਇ ॥ doojai bhaae jaae jag parabodhai bikh maaeaa moh suaae | In the love of duality, he goes to instruct the world, but he is engrossed in the poison of Maya and attachment to pleasure. - Guru Amardas Ji
ਇਤੁ ਕਮਾਣੈ ਸਦਾ ਦੁਖੁ ਪਾਵੈ ਜੰਮੈ ਮਰੈ ਫਿਰਿ ਆਵੈ ਜਾਇ ॥ eit kamaanai sadaa dukh paavai jamai marai fir aavai jaae | By doing so, he suffers in constant pain; he is born and then dies, and comes and goes again and again. - Guru Amardas Ji
ਸਹਸਾ ਮੂਲਿ ਨ ਚੁਕਈ ਵਿਚਿ ਵਿਸਟਾ ਪਚੈ ਪਚਾਇ ॥ sahasaa mool na chukee vich visattaa pachai pachaae | His doubts do not leave him at all, and he rots away in manure. - Guru Amardas Ji
ਜਿਸ ਨੋ ਕ੍ਰਿਪਾ ਕਰੇ ਮੇਰਾ ਸੁਆਮੀ ਤਿਸੁ ਗੁਰ ਕੀ ਸਿਖ ਸੁਣਾਇ ॥ jis no kripaa kare meraa suaamee tis gur kee sikh sunaae | One, unto whom my Lord Master shows His Mercy, listens to the Guru’s Teachings. - Guru Amardas Ji
ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਧਿਆਵੈ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੋ ਗਾਵੈ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੋ ਅੰਤਿ ਛਡਾਇ ॥੨॥ har naam dhiaavai har naamo gaavai har naamo ant chhaddaae |2| He meditates on the Lord’s Name, and sings the Lord’s Name; in the end, the Lord’s Name will deliver him. ||2|| - Guru Amardas Ji
ਪਉੜੀ ॥ paurree | Pauree: - Guru Amardas Ji
ਜਿਨਾ ਹੁਕਮੁ ਮਨਾਇਓਨੁ ਤੇ ਪੂਰੇ ਸੰਸਾਰਿ ॥ jinaa hukam manaaeon te poore sansaar | Those who obey the Hukam of the Lord’s Command, are the perfect persons in the world. - Guru Amardas Ji
ਸਾਹਿਬੁ ਸੇਵਨਿੑ ਆਪਣਾ ਪੂਰੈ ਸਬਦਿ ਵੀਚਾਰਿ ॥ saahib sevana aapanaa poorai sabad veechaar | They serve their Lord Master, and reflect upon the Perfect Word of the Shabad. - Guru Amardas Ji
ਹਰਿ ਕੀ ਸੇਵਾ ਚਾਕਰੀ ਸਚੈ ਸਬਦਿ ਪਿਆਰਿ ॥ har kee sevaa chaakaree sachai sabad piaar | They serve the Lord, and love the True Word of the Shabad. - Guru Amardas Ji
ਹਰਿ ਕਾ ਮਹਲੁ ਤਿਨੑੀ ਪਾਇਆ ਜਿਨੑ ਹਉਮੈ ਵਿਚਹੁ ਮਾਰਿ ॥ har kaa mehal tinaee paaeaa jina haumai vichahu maar | They attain the Mansion of the Lord’s Presence, as they eradicate egotism from within. - Guru Amardas Ji
ਨਾਨਕ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਮਿਲਿ ਰਹੇ ਜਪਿ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮਾ ਉਰ ਧਾਰਿ ॥੧੦॥ naanak guramukh mil rahe jap har naamaa ur dhaar |10| O Nanak, the Gurmukhs remain united with Him, chanting the Name of the Lord, and enshrining it within their hearts. ||10|| - Guru Amardas Ji

ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਧਿਆਨ ਸਹਜ ਧੁਨਿ ਉਪਜੈ ਸਚਿ ਨਾਮਿ ਚਿਤੁ ਲਾਇਆ ॥ guramukh dhiaan sehaj dhun upajai sach naam chit laaeaa | The Gurmukh meditates on the Lord; the celestial sound-current resounds within him, and he focuses his consciousness on the True Name. - Guru Amardas Ji
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਅਨਦਿਨੁ ਰਹੈ ਰੰਗਿ ਰਾਤਾ ਹਰਿ ਕਾ ਨਾਮੁ ਮਨਿ ਭਾਇਆ ॥ guramukh anadin rahai rang raataa har kaa naam man bhaaeaa | The Gurmukh remains imbued with the Lord’s Love, night and day; his mind is pleased with the Name of the Lord. - Guru Amardas Ji
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਹਰਿ ਵੇਖਹਿ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਹਰਿ ਬੋਲਹਿ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਹਰਿ ਸਹਜਿ ਰੰਗੁ ਲਾਇਆ ॥ guramukh har vekheh guramukh har boleh guramukh har sehaj rang laaeaa | The Gurmukh beholds the Lord, the Gurmukh speaks of the Lord, and the Gurmukh naturally loves the Lord. - Guru Amardas Ji
ਨਾਨਕ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਗਿਆਨੁ ਪਰਾਪਤਿ ਹੋਵੈ ਤਿਮਰ ਅਗਿਆਨੁ ਅਧੇਰੁ ਚੁਕਾਇਆ ॥ naanak guramukh giaan paraapat hovai timar agiaan adher chukaaeaa | O Nanak, the Gurmukh attains spiritual wisdom, and the pitch-black darkness of ignorance is dispelled. - Guru Amardas Ji
ਜਿਸ ਨੋ ਕਰਮੁ ਹੋਵੈ ਧੁਰਿ ਪੂਰਾ ਤਿਨਿ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਧਿਆਇਆ ॥੧॥ jis no karam hovai dhur pooraa tin guramukh har naam dhiaaeaa |1| One who is blessed by the Perfect Lord’s Grace - as Gurmukh, he meditates on the Lord’s Name. ||1|| - Guru Amardas Ji

ਸਹਜੇ ਨਾਮੁ ਨ ਧਿਆਇਆ ਕਿਤੁ ਆਇਆ ਸੰਸਾਰਿ ॥ sahaje naam na dhiaaeaa kit aaeaa sansaar | They do not meditate on the Celestial Naam, the Name of the Lord - why did they even bother to come into the world? - Guru Amardas Ji
ਫਿਰਿ ਫਿਰਿ ਜੂਨੀ ਪਾਈਐ ਵਿਸਟਾ ਸਦਾ ਖੁਆਰੁ ॥ fir fir joonee paaeeai visattaa sadaa khuaar | Time and time again, they are reincarnated, and they rot away forever in manure. - Guru Amardas Ji
ਕੂੜੈ ਲਾਲਚਿ ਲਗਿਆ ਨਾ ਉਰਵਾਰੁ ਨ ਪਾਰੁ ॥ koorrai laalach lagiaa naa uravaar na paar | They are attached to false greed; they are not on this shore, nor on the one beyond. - Guru Amardas Ji
