ਕਾਇਆ ਮਿਟੀ ਅੰਧੁ ਹੈ ਪਉਣੈ ਪੁਛਹੁ ਜਾਇ ॥ kaaeaa mittee andh hai paunai puchhahu jaae | The body is merely blind dust; go, and ask the soul. - Guru Amardas Ji
ਹਉ ਤਾ ਮਾਇਆ ਮੋਹਿਆ ਫਿਰਿ ਫਿਰਿ ਆਵਾ ਜਾਇ ॥ hau taa maaeaa mohiaa fir fir aavaa jaae | The soul answers, “I am enticed by Maya, and so I come and go, again and again.” - Guru Amardas Ji
ਨਾਨਕ ਹੁਕਮੁ ਨ ਜਾਤੋ ਖਸਮ ਕਾ ਜਿ ਰਹਾ ਸਚਿ ਸਮਾਇ ॥੧॥ naanak hukam na jaato khasam kaa ji rahaa sach samaae |1| O Nanak, I do not know my Lord and Master’s Command, by which I would merge in the Truth. ||1|| - Guru Amardas Ji

ਏਕੋ ਨਿਹਚਲ ਨਾਮ ਧਨੁ ਹੋਰੁ ਧਨੁ ਆਵੈ ਜਾਇ ॥ eko nihachal naam dhan hor dhan aavai jaae | The Naam, the Name of the Lord, is the only permanent wealth; all other wealth comes and goes. - Guru Amardas Ji
ਇਸੁ ਧਨ ਕਉ ਤਸਕਰੁ ਜੋਹਿ ਨ ਸਕਈ ਨਾ ਓਚਕਾ ਲੈ ਜਾਇ ॥ eis dhan kau tasakar johi na sakee naa ochakaa lai jaae | Thieves cannot steal this wealth, nor can robbers take it away. - Guru Amardas Ji
ਇਹੁ ਹਰਿ ਧਨੁ ਜੀਐ ਸੇਤੀ ਰਵਿ ਰਹਿਆ ਜੀਐ ਨਾਲੇ ਜਾਇ ॥ eihu har dhan jeeai setee rav rahiaa jeeai naale jaae | This wealth of the Lord is embedded in the soul, and with the soul, it shall depart. - Guru Amardas Ji
ਪੂਰੇ ਗੁਰ ਤੇ ਪਾਈਐ ਮਨਮੁਖਿ ਪਲੈ ਨ ਪਾਇ ॥ poore gur te paaeeai manamukh palai na paae | It is obtained from the Perfect Guru; the self-willed manmukhs do not receive it. - Guru Amardas Ji
ਧਨੁ ਵਾਪਾਰੀ ਨਾਨਕਾ ਜਿਨੑਾ ਨਾਮ ਧਨੁ ਖਟਿਆ ਆਇ ॥੨॥ dhan vaapaaree naanakaa jinaa naam dhan khattiaa aae |2| Blessed are the traders, O Nanak, who have come to earn the wealth of the Naam. ||2|| - Guru Amardas Ji

ਮੇਰਾ ਸਾਹਿਬੁ ਅਤਿ ਵਡਾ ਸਚੁ ਗਹਿਰ ਗੰਭੀਰਾ ॥ meraa saahib at vaddaa sach gahir ganbheeraa | My Master is so very great, true, profound and unfathomable. - Guru Amardas Ji
ਸਭੁ ਜਗੁ ਤਿਸ ਕੈ ਵਸਿ ਹੈ ਸਭੁ ਤਿਸ ਕਾ ਚੀਰਾ ॥ sabh jag tis kai vas hai sabh tis kaa cheeraa | The whole world is under His power; everything is the projection of Him. - Guru Amardas Ji
ਗੁਰ ਪਰਸਾਦੀ ਪਾਈਐ ਨਿਹਚਲੁ ਧਨੁ ਧੀਰਾ ॥ gur parasaadee paaeeai nihachal dhan dheeraa | By Guru’s Grace, the eternal wealth is obtained, bringing peace and patience to the mind. - Guru Amardas Ji
ਕਿਰਪਾ ਤੇ ਹਰਿ ਮਨਿ ਵਸੈ ਭੇਟੈ ਗੁਰੁ ਸੂਰਾ ॥ kirapaa te har man vasai bhettai gur sooraa | By His Grace, the Lord dwells in the mind, and one meets the Brave Guru. - Guru Amardas Ji
ਗੁਣਵੰਤੀ ਸਾਲਾਹਿਆ ਸਦਾ ਥਿਰੁ ਨਿਹਚਲੁ ਹਰਿ ਪੂਰਾ ॥੭॥ gunavantee saalaahiaa sadaa thir nihachal har pooraa |7| The virtuous praise the ever-stable, permanent, perfect Lord. ||7|| - Guru Amardas Ji

ਧ੍ਰਿਗੁ ਤਿਨੑਾ ਦਾ ਜੀਵਿਆ ਜੋ ਹਰਿ ਸੁਖੁ ਪਰਹਰਿ ਤਿਆਗਦੇ ਦੁਖੁ ਹਉਮੈ ਪਾਪ ਕਮਾਇ ॥ dhrig tinaa daa jeeviaa jo har sukh parahar tiaagade dukh haumai paap kamaae | Cursed is the life of those who forsake and throw away the peace of the Lord’s Name, and suffer pain instead by practicing ego and sin. - Guru Amardas Ji
ਮਨਮੁਖ ਅਗਿਆਨੀ ਮਾਇਆ ਮੋਹਿ ਵਿਆਪੇ ਤਿਨੑ ਬੂਝ ਨ ਕਾਈ ਪਾਇ ॥ manamukh agiaanee maaeaa mohi viaape tina boojh na kaaee paae | The ignorant self-willed manmukhs are engrossed in the love of Maya; they have no understanding at all. - Guru Amardas Ji
ਹਲਤਿ ਪਲਤਿ ਓਇ ਸੁਖੁ ਨ ਪਾਵਹਿ ਅੰਤਿ ਗਏ ਪਛੁਤਾਇ ॥ halat palat oe sukh na paaveh ant ge pachhutaae | In this world and in the world beyond, they do not find peace; in the end, they depart regretting and repenting. - Guru Amardas Ji
ਗੁਰ ਪਰਸਾਦੀ ਕੋ ਨਾਮੁ ਧਿਆਏ ਤਿਸੁ ਹਉਮੈ ਵਿਚਹੁ ਜਾਇ ॥ gur parasaadee ko naam dhiaae tis haumai vichahu jaae | By Guru’s Grace, one may meditate on the Naam, the Name of the Lord, and egotism departs from within him. - Guru Amardas Ji
ਨਾਨਕ ਜਿਸੁ ਪੂਰਬਿ ਹੋਵੈ ਲਿਖਿਆ ਸੋ ਗੁਰ ਚਰਣੀ ਆਇ ਪਾਇ ॥੧॥ naanak jis poorab hovai likhiaa so gur charanee aae paae |1| O Nanak, one who has such pre-ordained destiny, comes and falls at the Guru’s Feet. ||1|| - Guru Amardas Ji

ਮਨਮੁਖੁ ਊਧਾ ਕਉਲੁ ਹੈ ਨਾ ਤਿਸੁ ਭਗਤਿ ਨ ਨਾਉ ॥ manamukh aoodhaa kaul hai naa tis bhagat na naau | The self-willed manmukh is like the inverted lotus; he has neither devotional worship, nor the Lord’s Name. - Guru Amardas Ji
ਸਕਤੀ ਅੰਦਰਿ ਵਰਤਦਾ ਕੂੜੁ ਤਿਸ ਕਾ ਹੈ ਉਪਾਉ ॥ sakatee andar varatadaa koorr tis kaa hai upaau | He remains engrossed in material wealth, and his efforts are false. - Guru Amardas Ji
ਤਿਸ ਕਾ ਅੰਦਰੁ ਚਿਤੁ ਨ ਭਿਜਈ ਮੁਖਿ ਫੀਕਾ ਆਲਾਉ ॥ tis kaa andar chit na bhijee mukh feekaa aalaau | His consciousness is not softened within, and the words from his mouth are insipid. - Guru Amardas Ji
ਓਇ ਧਰਮਿ ਰਲਾਏ ਨਾ ਰਲਨਿੑ ਓਨਾ ਅੰਦਰਿ ਕੂੜੁ ਸੁਆਉ ॥ oe dharam ralaae naa ralana onaa andar koorr suaau | He does not mingle with the righteous; within him are falsehood and selfishness. - Guru Amardas Ji
ਨਾਨਕ ਕਰਤੈ ਬਣਤ ਬਣਾਈ ਮਨਮੁਖ ਕੂੜੁ ਬੋਲਿ ਬੋਲਿ ਡੁਬੇ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਤਰੇ ਜਪਿ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਉ ॥੨॥ naanak karatai banat banaaee manamukh koorr bol bol ddube guramukh tare jap har naau |2| O Nanak, the Creator Lord has arranged things, so that the self-willed manmukhs are drowned by telling lies, while the Gurmukhs are saved by chanting the Lord’s Name. ||2|| - Guru Amardas Ji

ਬਿਨੁ ਬੂਝੇ ਵਡਾ ਫੇਰੁ ਪਇਆ ਫਿਰਿ ਆਵੈ ਜਾਈ ॥ bin boojhe vaddaa fer peaa fir aavai jaaee | Without understanding, one must wander around the cycle of reincarnation, and continue coming and going. - Guru Amardas Ji
ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਕੀ ਸੇਵਾ ਨ ਕੀਤੀਆ ਅੰਤਿ ਗਇਆ ਪਛੁਤਾਈ ॥ satigur kee sevaa na keeteea ant geaa pachhutaaee | One who has not served the True Guru, shall depart regretting and repenting in the end. - Guru Amardas Ji
ਆਪਣੀ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਕਰੇ ਗੁਰੁ ਪਾਈਐ ਵਿਚਹੁ ਆਪੁ ਗਵਾਈ ॥ aapanee kirapaa kare gur paaeeai vichahu aap gavaaee | But if the Lord shows His Mercy, one finds the Guru, and ego is banished from within. - Guru Amardas Ji
ਤ੍ਰਿਸਨਾ ਭੁਖ ਵਿਚਹੁ ਉਤਰੈ ਸੁਖੁ ਵਸੈ ਮਨਿ ਆਈ ॥ trisanaa bhukh vichahu utarai sukh vasai man aaee | Hunger and thirst depart from within, and peace comes to dwell in the mind. - Guru Amardas Ji
ਸਦਾ ਸਦਾ ਸਾਲਾਹੀਐ ਹਿਰਦੈ ਲਿਵ ਲਾਈ ॥੮॥ sadaa sadaa saalaaheeai hiradai liv laaee |8| Forever and ever, praise Him with love in your heart. ||8|| - Guru Amardas Ji

ਜਿ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਸੇਵੇ ਆਪਣਾ ਤਿਸ ਨੋ ਪੂਜੇ ਸਭੁ ਕੋਇ ॥ ji satigur seve aapanaa tis no pooje sabh koe | One who serves his True Guru, is worshipped by everyone. - Guru Amardas Ji
ਸਭਨਾ ਉਪਾਵਾ ਸਿਰਿ ਉਪਾਉ ਹੈ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਪਰਾਪਤਿ ਹੋਇ ॥ sabhanaa upaavaa sir upaau hai har naam paraapat hoe | Of all efforts, the supreme effort is the attainment of the Lord’s Name. - Guru Amardas Ji
ਅੰਤਰਿ ਸੀਤਲ ਸਾਤਿ ਵਸੈ ਜਪਿ ਹਿਰਦੈ ਸਦਾ ਸੁਖੁ ਹੋਇ ॥ antar seetal saat vasai jap hiradai sadaa sukh hoe | Peace and tranquility come to dwell within the mind; meditating within the heart, there comes a lasting peace. - Guru Amardas Ji
ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤੁ ਖਾਣਾ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤੁ ਪੈਨਣਾ ਨਾਨਕ ਨਾਮੁ ਵਡਾਈ ਹੋਇ ॥੧॥ amrit khaanaa amrit painanaa naanak naam vaddaaee hoe |1| The Ambrosial Amrit is his food, and the Ambrosial Amrit is his clothes; O Nanak, through the Naam, the Name of the Lord, greatness is obtained. ||1|| - Guru Amardas Ji
