ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਵਾਕਿ ਹਿਰਦੈ ਹਰਿ ਨਿਰਮਲੁ ਨਾ ਜਮ ਕਾਣਿ ਨ ਜਮ ਕੀ ਬਾਕੀ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥ satigur vaak hiradai har niramal naa jam kaan na jam kee baakee |1| rahaau | One whose heart is filled with the Hymns of the True Guru, obtains the Pure Lord. He is not under the power of the Messenger of Death, nor does he owe Death anything. ||1||Pause|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਹਰਿ ਗੁਣ ਰਸਨ ਰਵਹਿ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਸੰਗੇ ਜੋ ਤਿਸੁ ਭਾਵੈ ਸਹਜਿ ਹਰੀ ॥ har gun rasan raveh prabh sange jo tis bhaavai sehaj haree | He chants the Glorious Praises of the Lord with his tongue, and abides with God; he does whatever pleases the Lord. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਬਿਨੁ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮ ਬ੍ਰਿਥਾ ਜਗਿ ਜੀਵਨੁ ਹਰਿ ਬਿਨੁ ਨਿਹਫਲ ਮੇਕ ਘਰੀ ॥੨॥ bin har naam brithaa jag jeevan har bin nihafal mek gharee |2| Without the Lord’s Name, life passes in vain in the world, and every moment is useless. ||2|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਐ ਜੀ ਖੋਟੇ ਠਉਰ ਨਾਹੀ ਘਰਿ ਬਾਹਰਿ ਨਿੰਦਕ ਗਤਿ ਨਹੀ ਕਾਈ ॥ ai jee khotte tthaur naahee ghar baahar nindak gat nahee kaaee | The false have no place of rest, either inside or outside; the slanderer does not find salvation. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਰੋਸੁ ਕਰੈ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਬਖਸ ਨ ਮੇਟੈ ਨਿਤ ਨਿਤ ਚੜੈ ਸਵਾਈ ॥੩॥ ros karai prabh bakhas na mettai nit nit charrai savaaee |3| Even if one is resentful, God does not withhold His blessings; day by day, they increase. ||3|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਐ ਜੀ ਗੁਰ ਕੀ ਦਾਤਿ ਨ ਮੇਟੈ ਕੋਈ ਮੇਰੈ ਠਾਕੁਰਿ ਆਪਿ ਦਿਵਾਈ ॥ ai jee gur kee daat na mettai koee merai tthaakur aap divaaee | No one can take away the Guru’s gifts; my Lord and Master Himself has given them. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਨਿੰਦਕ ਨਰ ਕਾਲੇ ਮੁਖ ਨਿੰਦਾ ਜਿਨੑ ਗੁਰ ਕੀ ਦਾਤਿ ਨ ਭਾਈ ॥੪॥ nindak nar kaale mukh nindaa jina gur kee daat na bhaaee |4| The black-faced slanderers, with slander in their mouths, do not appreciate the Guru’s gifts. ||4|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਐ ਜੀ ਸਰਣਿ ਪਰੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਬਖਸਿ ਮਿਲਾਵੈ ਬਿਲਮ ਨ ਅਧੂਆ ਰਾਈ ॥ ai jee saran pare prabh bakhas milaavai bilam na adhooaa raaee | God forgives and blends with Himself those who take to His Sanctuary; He does not delay for an instant. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਆਨਦ ਮੂਲੁ ਨਾਥੁ ਸਿਰਿ ਨਾਥਾ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਮੇਲਿ ਮਿਲਾਈ ॥੫॥ aanad mool naath sir naathaa satigur mel milaaee |5| He is the source of bliss, the Greatest Lord; through the True Guru, we are united in His Union. ||5|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਐ ਜੀ ਸਦਾ ਦਇਆਲੁ ਦਇਆ ਕਰਿ ਰਵਿਆ ਗੁਰਮਤਿ ਭ੍ਰਮਨਿ ਚੁਕਾਈ ॥ ai jee sadaa deaal deaa kar raviaa guramat bhraman chukaaee | Through His Kindness, the Kind Lord pervades us; through Guru’s Teachings, our wanderings cease. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਪਾਰਸੁ ਭੇਟਿ ਕੰਚਨੁ ਧਾਤੁ ਹੋਈ ਸਤਸੰਗਤਿ ਕੀ ਵਡਿਆਈ ॥੬॥ paaras bhett kanchan dhaat hoee satasangat kee vaddiaaee |6| Touching the philosopher’s stone, metal is transformed into gold. Such is the glorious greatness of the Society of the Saints. ||6|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਹਰਿ ਜਲੁ ਨਿਰਮਲੁ ਮਨੁ ਇਸਨਾਨੀ ਮਜਨੁ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਭਾਈ ॥ har jal niramal man isanaanee majan satigur bhaaee | The Lord is the immaculate water; the mind is the bather, and the True Guru is the bath attendant, O Siblings of Destiny. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਪੁਨਰਪਿ ਜਨਮੁ ਨਾਹੀ ਜਨ ਸੰਗਤਿ ਜੋਤੀ ਜੋਤਿ ਮਿਲਾਈ ॥੭॥ punarap janam naahee jan sangat jotee jot milaaee |7| That humble being who joins the Sat Sangat shall not be consigned to reincarnation again; his light merges into the Light. ||7|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਤੂੰ ਵਡ ਪੁਰਖੁ ਅਗੰਮ ਤਰੋਵਰੁ ਹਮ ਪੰਖੀ ਤੁਝ ਮਾਹੀ ॥ toon vadd purakh agam tarovar ham pankhee tujh maahee | You are the Great Primal Lord, the infinite tree of life; I am a bird perched on Your branches. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਨਾਨਕ ਨਾਮੁ ਨਿਰੰਜਨ ਦੀਜੈ ਜੁਗਿ ਜੁਗਿ ਸਬਦਿ ਸਲਾਹੀ ॥੮॥੪॥ naanak naam niranjan deejai jug jug sabad salaahee |8|4| Grant to Nanak the Immaculate Naam; throughout the ages, he sings the Praises of the Shabad. ||8||4|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji

ਭਗਤਿ ਪ੍ਰੇਮ ਆਰਾਧਿਤੰ ਸਚੁ ਪਿਆਸ ਪਰਮ ਹਿਤੰ ॥ bhagat prem aaraadhitan sach piaas param hitan | The devotees worship the Lord in loving adoration. They thirst for the True Lord, with infinite affection. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਬਿਲਲਾਪ ਬਿਲਲ ਬਿਨੰਤੀਆ ਸੁਖ ਭਾਇ ਚਿਤ ਹਿਤੰ ॥੧॥ bilalaap bilal binanteea sukh bhaae chit hitan |1| They tearfully beg and implore the Lord; in love and affection, their consciousness is at peace. ||1|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਜਪਿ ਮਨ ਨਾਮੁ ਹਰਿ ਸਰਣੀ ॥ jap man naam har saranee | Chant the Naam, the Name of the Lord, O my mind, and take to His Sanctuary. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਸੰਸਾਰ ਸਾਗਰ ਤਾਰਿ ਤਾਰਣ ਰਮ ਨਾਮ ਕਰਿ ਕਰਣੀ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥ sansaar saagar taar taaran ram naam kar karanee |1| rahaau | The Lord’s Name is the boat to cross over the world-ocean. Practice such a way of life. ||1||Pause|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਏ ਮਨ ਮਿਰਤ ਸੁਭ ਚਿੰਤੰ ਗੁਰ ਸਬਦਿ ਹਰਿ ਰਮਣੰ ॥ e man mirat subh chintan gur sabad har ramanan | O mind, even death wishes you well, when you remember the Lord through the Word of the Guru’s Shabad. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਮਤਿ ਤਤੁ ਗਿਆਨੰ ਕਲਿਆਣ ਨਿਧਾਨੰ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮ ਮਨਿ ਰਮਣੰ ॥੨॥ mat tat giaanan kaliaan nidhaanan har naam man ramanan |2| The intellect receives the treasure, the knowledge of reality and supreme bliss, by repeating the Lord’s Name in the mind. ||2|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਚਲ ਚਿਤ ਵਿਤ ਭ੍ਰਮਾ ਭ੍ਰਮੰ ਜਗੁ ਮੋਹ ਮਗਨ ਹਿਤੰ ॥ chal chit vit bhramaa bhraman jag moh magan hitan | The fickle consciousness wanders around chasing after wealth; it is intoxicated with worldly love and emotional attachment. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਥਿਰੁ ਨਾਮੁ ਭਗਤਿ ਦਿੜੰ ਮਤੀ ਗੁਰ ਵਾਕਿ ਸਬਦ ਰਤੰ ॥੩॥ thir naam bhagat dirran matee gur vaak sabad ratan |3| Devotion to the Naam is permanently implanted within the mind, when it is attuned to the Guru’s Teachings and His Shabad. ||3|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਭਰਮਾਤਿ ਭਰਮੁ ਨ ਚੂਕਈ ਜਗੁ ਜਨਮਿ ਬਿਆਧਿ ਖਪੰ ॥ bharamaat bharam na chookee jag janam biaadh khapan | Wandering around, doubt is not dispelled; afflicted by reincarnation, the world is being ruined. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਅਸਥਾਨੁ ਹਰਿ ਨਿਹਕੇਵਲੰ ਸਤਿ ਮਤੀ ਨਾਮ ਤਪੰ ॥੪॥ asathaan har nihakevalan sat matee naam tapan |4| The Lord’s eternal throne is free of this affliction; he is truly wise, who takes the Naam as his deep meditation. ||4|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਇਹੁ ਜਗੁ ਮੋਹ ਹੇਤ ਬਿਆਪਿਤੰ ਦੁਖੁ ਅਧਿਕ ਜਨਮ ਮਰਣੰ ॥ eihu jag moh het biaapitan dukh adhik janam maranan | This world is engrossed in attachment and transitory love; it suffers the terrible pains of birth and death. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਭਜੁ ਸਰਣਿ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਊਬਰਹਿ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਰਿਦ ਰਮਣੰ ॥੫॥ bhaj saran satigur aoobareh har naam rid ramanan |5| Run to the Sanctuary of the True Guru, chant the Lord’s Name in your heart, and you shall swim across. ||5|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਗੁਰਮਤਿ ਨਿਹਚਲ ਮਨਿ ਮਨੁ ਮਨੰ ਸਹਜ ਬੀਚਾਰੰ ॥ guramat nihachal man man manan sehaj beechaaran | Following the Guru’s Teaching, the mind becomes stable; the mind accepts it, and reflects upon it in peaceful poise. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਸੋ ਮਨੁ ਨਿਰਮਲੁ ਜਿਤੁ ਸਾਚੁ ਅੰਤਰਿ ਗਿਆਨ ਰਤਨੁ ਸਾਰੰ ॥੬॥ so man niramal jit saach antar giaan ratan saaran |6| That mind is pure, which enshrines Truth within, and the most excellent jewel of spiritual wisdom. ||6|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਭੈ ਭਾਇ ਭਗਤਿ ਤਰੁ ਭਵਜਲੁ ਮਨਾ ਚਿਤੁ ਲਾਇ ਹਰਿ ਚਰਣੀ ॥ bhai bhaae bhagat tar bhavajal manaa chit laae har charanee | By the Fear of God, and Love of God, and by devotion, man crosses over the terrifying world-ocean, focusing his consciousness on the Lord’s Lotus Feet. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
