ਤੇਲ ਜਲੇ ਬਾਤੀ ਠਹਰਾਨੀ ਸੂੰਨਾ ਮੰਦਰੁ ਹੋਈ ॥੧॥ tel jale baatee tthaharaanee soonaa mandar hoee |1| But when the oil is burnt, the wick goes out, and the mansion becomes desolate. ||1|| - Bhagat Kabir Ji
ਰੇ ਬਉਰੇ ਤੁਹਿ ਘਰੀ ਨ ਰਾਖੈ ਕੋਈ ॥ re baure tuhi gharee na raakhai koee | O mad-man, no one will keep you, for even a moment. - Bhagat Kabir Ji
ਤੂੰ ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮੁ ਜਪਿ ਸੋਈ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥ toon raam naam jap soee |1| rahaau | Meditate on the Name of that Lord. ||1||Pause|| - Bhagat Kabir Ji
ਕਾ ਕੀ ਮਾਤ ਪਿਤਾ ਕਹੁ ਕਾ ਕੋ ਕਵਨ ਪੁਰਖ ਕੀ ਜੋਈ ॥ kaa kee maat pitaa kahu kaa ko kavan purakh kee joee | Tell me, whose mother is that, whose father is that, and which man has a wife? - Bhagat Kabir Ji
ਘਟ ਫੂਟੇ ਕੋਊ ਬਾਤ ਨ ਪੂਛੈ ਕਾਢਹੁ ਕਾਢਹੁ ਹੋਈ ॥੨॥ ghatt footte koaoo baat na poochhai kaadtahu kaadtahu hoee |2| When the pitcher of the body breaks, no one cares for you at all. Everyone says, “Take him away, take him away!” ||2|| - Bhagat Kabir Ji
ਦੇਹੁਰੀ ਬੈਠੀ ਮਾਤਾ ਰੋਵੈ ਖਟੀਆ ਲੇ ਗਏ ਭਾਈ ॥ dehuree baitthee maataa rovai khatteea le ge bhaaee | Sitting on the threshold, his mother cries, and his brothers take away the coffin. - Bhagat Kabir Ji
ਲਟ ਛਿਟਕਾਏ ਤਿਰੀਆ ਰੋਵੈ ਹੰਸੁ ਇਕੇਲਾ ਜਾਈ ॥੩॥ latt chhittakaae tireea rovai hans ikelaa jaaee |3| Taking down her hair, his wife cries out in sorrow, and the swan-soul departs all alone. ||3|| - Bhagat Kabir Ji

ਸਨਕ ਸਨੰਦ ਅੰਤੁ ਨਹੀ ਪਾਇਆ ॥ sanak sanand ant nahee paaeaa | Sanak and Sanand, the sons of Brahma, could not find the Lord’s limits. - Bhagat Kabir Ji
ਬੇਦ ਪੜੇ ਪੜਿ ਬ੍ਰਹਮੇ ਜਨਮੁ ਗਵਾਇਆ ॥੧॥ bed parre parr brahame janam gavaaeaa |1| Brahma wasted his life away, continually reading the Vedas. ||1|| - Bhagat Kabir Ji

ਸਹਜਿ ਬਿਲੋਵਹੁ ਜੈਸੇ ਤਤੁ ਨ ਜਾਈ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥ sehaj bilovahu jaise tat na jaaee |1| rahaau | Churn it steadily, so that the essence, the butter, may not be lost. ||1||Pause|| - Bhagat Kabir Ji
ਤਨੁ ਕਰਿ ਮਟੁਕੀ ਮਨ ਮਾਹਿ ਬਿਲੋਈ ॥ tan kar mattukee man maeh biloee | Make your body the churning jar, and use the stick of your mind to churn it. - Bhagat Kabir Ji
ਇਸੁ ਮਟੁਕੀ ਮਹਿ ਸਬਦੁ ਸੰਜੋਈ ॥੨॥ eis mattukee meh sabad sanjoee |2| Gather the curds of the Word of the Shabad. ||2|| - Bhagat Kabir Ji
ਹਰਿ ਕਾ ਬਿਲੋਵਨਾ ਮਨ ਕਾ ਬੀਚਾਰਾ ॥ har kaa bilovanaa man kaa beechaaraa | The churning of the Lord is to reflect upon Him within your mind. - Bhagat Kabir Ji
ਗੁਰ ਪ੍ਰਸਾਦਿ ਪਾਵੈ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਧਾਰਾ ॥੩॥ gur prasaad paavai amrit dhaaraa |3| By Guru’s Grace, the Ambrosial Nectar flows into us. ||3|| - Bhagat Kabir Ji
ਕਹੁ ਕਬੀਰ ਨਦਰਿ ਕਰੇ ਜੇ ਮਂੀਰਾ ॥ kahu kabeer nadar kare je maneeraa | Says Kabeer, if the Lord, our King casts His Glance of Grace, - Bhagat Kabir Ji

ਬਾਤੀ ਸੂਕੀ ਤੇਲੁ ਨਿਖੂਟਾ ॥ baatee sookee tel nikhoottaa | The wick has dried up, and the oil is exhausted. - Bhagat Kabir Ji
ਮੰਦਲੁ ਨ ਬਾਜੈ ਨਟੁ ਪੈ ਸੂਤਾ ॥੧॥ mandal na baajai natt pai sootaa |1| The drum does not sound, and the actor has gone to sleep. ||1|| - Bhagat Kabir Ji
ਬੁਝਿ ਗਈ ਅਗਨਿ ਨ ਨਿਕਸਿਓ ਧੂੰਆ ॥ bujh gee agan na nikasio dhoonaa | The fire has gone out, and no smoke is produced. - Bhagat Kabir Ji
ਰਵਿ ਰਹਿਆ ਏਕੁ ਅਵਰੁ ਨਹੀ ਦੂਆ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥ rav rahiaa ek avar nahee dooaa |1| rahaau | The One Lord is pervading and permeating everywhere; there is no other second. ||1||Pause|| - Bhagat Kabir Ji
ਟੂਟੀ ਤੰਤੁ ਨ ਬਜੈ ਰਬਾਬੁ ॥ ttoottee tant na bajai rabaab | The string has broken, and the guitar makes no sound. - Bhagat Kabir Ji
ਭੂਲਿ ਬਿਗਾਰਿਓ ਅਪਨਾ ਕਾਜੁ ॥੨॥ bhool bigaario apanaa kaaj |2| He mistakenly ruins his own affairs. ||2|| - Bhagat Kabir Ji
ਕਥਨੀ ਬਦਨੀ ਕਹਨੁ ਕਹਾਵਨੁ ॥ kathanee badanee kehan kahaavan | When one comes to understand, - Bhagat Kabir Ji
ਸਮਝਿ ਪਰੀ ਤਉ ਬਿਸਰਿਓ ਗਾਵਨੁ ॥੩॥ samajh paree tau bisario gaavan |3| He forgets his preaching, ranting and raving, and arguing. ||3|| - Bhagat Kabir Ji
ਕਹਤ ਕਬੀਰ ਪੰਚ ਜੋ ਚੂਰੇ ॥ kehat kabeer panch jo choore | Says Kabeer, the state of supreme dignity is never far - Bhagat Kabir Ji
ਤਿਨ ਤੇ ਨਾਹਿ ਪਰਮ ਪਦੁ ਦੂਰੇ ॥੪॥੨॥੧੧॥ tin te naeh param pad doore |4|2|11| From those who conquer the five demons of the body passions. ||4||2||11|| - Bhagat Kabir Ji

ਜਨਨੀ ਚੀਤਿ ਨ ਰਾਖਸਿ ਤੇਤੇ ॥੧॥ jananee cheet na raakhas tete |1| his mother does not hold them against him in her mind. ||1|| - Bhagat Kabir Ji
ਰਾਮਈਆ ਹਉ ਬਾਰਿਕੁ ਤੇਰਾ ॥ raameea hau baarik teraa | O Lord, I am Your child. - Bhagat Kabir Ji
ਕਾਹੇ ਨ ਖੰਡਸਿ ਅਵਗਨੁ ਮੇਰਾ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥ kaahe na khanddas avagan meraa |1| rahaau | Why not destroy my sins? ||1||Pause|| - Bhagat Kabir Ji
ਜੇ ਅਤਿ ਕ੍ਰੋਪ ਕਰੇ ਕਰਿ ਧਾਇਆ ॥ je at krop kare kar dhaaeaa | If the son, in anger, runs away, - Bhagat Kabir Ji
ਤਾ ਭੀ ਚੀਤਿ ਨ ਰਾਖਸਿ ਮਾਇਆ ॥੨॥ taa bhee cheet na raakhas maaeaa |2| even then, his mother does not hold it against him in her mind. ||2|| - Bhagat Kabir Ji
ਚਿੰਤ ਭਵਨਿ ਮਨੁ ਪਰਿਓ ਹਮਾਰਾ ॥ chint bhavan man pario hamaaraa | My mind has fallen into the whirlpool of anxiety. - Bhagat Kabir Ji
ਨਾਮ ਬਿਨਾ ਕੈਸੇ ਉਤਰਸਿ ਪਾਰਾ ॥੩॥ naam binaa kaise utaras paaraa |3| Without the Naam, how can I cross over to the other side? ||3|| - Bhagat Kabir Ji
ਦੇਹਿ ਬਿਮਲ ਮਤਿ ਸਦਾ ਸਰੀਰਾ ॥ dehi bimal mat sadaa sareeraa | Please, bless my body with pure and lasting understanding, Lord; - Bhagat Kabir Ji
