ਨੀਲ ਵਸਤ੍ਰ ਪਹਿਰਿ ਹੋਵਹਿ ਪਰਵਾਣੁ ॥ neel vasatr pahir hoveh paravaan | Wearing blue robes, they seek the approval of the Muslim rulers. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਮਲੇਛ ਧਾਨੁ ਲੇ ਪੂਜਹਿ ਪੁਰਾਣੁ ॥ malechh dhaan le poojeh puraan | Accepting bread from the Muslim rulers, they still worship the Puraanas. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਅਭਾਖਿਆ ਕਾ ਕੁਠਾ ਬਕਰਾ ਖਾਣਾ ॥ abhaakhiaa kaa kutthaa bakaraa khaanaa | They eat the meat of the goats, killed after the Muslim prayers are read over them, - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਚਉਕੇ ਉਪਰਿ ਕਿਸੈ ਨ ਜਾਣਾ ॥ chauke upar kisai na jaanaa | but they do not allow anyone else to enter their kitchen areas. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਦੇ ਕੈ ਚਉਕਾ ਕਢੀ ਕਾਰ ॥ de kai chaukaa kadtee kaar | They draw lines around them, plastering the ground with cow-dung. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਉਪਰਿ ਆਇ ਬੈਠੇ ਕੂੜਿਆਰ ॥ aupar aae baitthe koorriaar | The false come and sit within them. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਮਤੁ ਭਿਟੈ ਵੇ ਮਤੁ ਭਿਟੈ ॥ mat bhittai ve mat bhittai | They cry out, “Do not touch our food, - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਇਹੁ ਅੰਨੁ ਅਸਾਡਾ ਫਿਟੈ ॥ eihu an asaaddaa fittai | Or it will be polluted!” - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਤਨਿ ਫਿਟੈ ਫੇੜ ਕਰੇਨਿ ॥ tan fittai ferr karen | But with their polluted bodies, they commit evil deeds. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਮਨਿ ਜੂਠੈ ਚੁਲੀ ਭਰੇਨਿ ॥ man jootthai chulee bharen | With filthy minds, they try to cleanse their mouths. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਕਹੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਸਚੁ ਧਿਆਈਐ ॥ kahu naanak sach dhiaaeeai | Says Nanak, meditate on the True Lord. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਸੁਚਿ ਹੋਵੈ ਤਾ ਸਚੁ ਪਾਈਐ ॥੨॥ such hovai taa sach paaeeai |2| If you are pure, you will obtain the True Lord. ||2|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਪਉੜੀ ॥ paurree | Pauree: - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਚਿਤੈ ਅੰਦਰਿ ਸਭੁ ਕੋ ਵੇਖਿ ਨਦਰੀ ਹੇਠਿ ਚਲਾਇਦਾ ॥ chitai andar sabh ko vekh nadaree hetth chalaaeidaa | All are within Your mind; You see and move them under Your Glance of Grace, O Lord. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਆਪੇ ਦੇ ਵਡਿਆਈਆ ਆਪੇ ਹੀ ਕਰਮ ਕਰਾਇਦਾ ॥ aape de vaddiaaeea aape hee karam karaaeidaa | You Yourself grant them glory, and You Yourself cause them to act. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਵਡਹੁ ਵਡਾ ਵਡ ਮੇਦਨੀ ਸਿਰੇ ਸਿਰਿ ਧੰਧੈ ਲਾਇਦਾ ॥ vaddahu vaddaa vadd medanee sire sir dhandhai laaeidaa | The Lord is the greatest of the great; great is His world. He enjoins all to their tasks. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਨਦਰਿ ਉਪਠੀ ਜੇ ਕਰੇ ਸੁਲਤਾਨਾ ਘਾਹੁ ਕਰਾਇਦਾ ॥ nadar upatthee je kare sulataanaa ghaahu karaaeidaa | If he should cast an angry glance, He can transform kings into blades of grass. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਦਰਿ ਮੰਗਨਿ ਭਿਖ ਨ ਪਾਇਦਾ ॥੧੬॥ dar mangan bhikh na paaeidaa |16| Even though they may beg from door to door, no one will give them charity. ||16|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji

ਜੇ ਮੋਹਾਕਾ ਘਰੁ ਮੁਹੈ ਘਰੁ ਮੁਹਿ ਪਿਤਰੀ ਦੇਇ ॥ je mohaakaa ghar muhai ghar muhi pitaree dee | The thief robs a house, and offers the stolen goods to his ancestors. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਅਗੈ ਵਸਤੁ ਸਿਞਾਣੀਐ ਪਿਤਰੀ ਚੋਰ ਕਰੇਇ ॥ agai vasat siyaaneeai pitaree chor karee | In the world hereafter, this is recognized, and his ancestors are considered thieves as well. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਵਢੀਅਹਿ ਹਥ ਦਲਾਲ ਕੇ ਮੁਸਫੀ ਏਹ ਕਰੇਇ ॥ vadteeeh hath dalaal ke musafee eeh karee | The hands of the go-between are cut off; this is the Lord’s justice. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਨਾਨਕ ਅਗੈ ਸੋ ਮਿਲੈ ਜਿ ਖਟੇ ਘਾਲੇ ਦੇਇ ॥੧॥ naanak agai so milai ji khatte ghaale dee |1| O Nanak, in the world hereafter, that alone is received, which one gives to the needy from his own earnings and labor. ||1|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji

ਜਿਉ ਜੋਰੂ ਸਿਰਨਾਵਣੀ ਆਵੈ ਵਾਰੋ ਵਾਰ ॥ jiau joroo siranaavanee aavai vaaro vaar | As a woman has her periods, month after month, - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਜੂਠੇ ਜੂਠਾ ਮੁਖਿ ਵਸੈ ਨਿਤ ਨਿਤ ਹੋਇ ਖੁਆਰੁ ॥ jootthe jootthaa mukh vasai nit nit hoe khuaar | so does falsehood dwell in the mouth of the false; they suffer forever, again and again. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਸੂਚੇ ਏਹਿ ਨ ਆਖੀਅਹਿ ਬਹਨਿ ਜਿ ਪਿੰਡਾ ਧੋਇ ॥ sooche ehi na aakheeeh behan ji pinddaa dhoe | They are not called pure, who sit down after merely washing their bodies. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਸੂਚੇ ਸੇਈ ਨਾਨਕਾ ਜਿਨ ਮਨਿ ਵਸਿਆ ਸੋਇ ॥੨॥ sooche seee naanakaa jin man vasiaa soe |2| Only they are pure, O Nanak, within whose minds the Lord abides. ||2|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਪਉੜੀ ॥ paurree | Pauree: - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਤੁਰੇ ਪਲਾਣੇ ਪਉਣ ਵੇਗ ਹਰ ਰੰਗੀ ਹਰਮ ਸਵਾਰਿਆ ॥ ture palaane paun veg har rangee haram savaariaa | With saddled horses, as fast as the wind, and harems decorated in every way; - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਕੋਠੇ ਮੰਡਪ ਮਾੜੀਆ ਲਾਇ ਬੈਠੇ ਕਰਿ ਪਾਸਾਰਿਆ ॥ kotthe manddap maarreea laae baitthe kar paasaariaa | in houses and pavilions and lofty mansions, they dwell, making ostentatious shows. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਚੀਜ ਕਰਨਿ ਮਨਿ ਭਾਵਦੇ ਹਰਿ ਬੁਝਨਿ ਨਾਹੀ ਹਾਰਿਆ ॥ cheej karan man bhaavade har bujhan naahee haariaa | They act out their minds’ desires, but they do not understand the Lord, and so they are ruined. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਕਰਿ ਫੁਰਮਾਇਸਿ ਖਾਇਆ ਵੇਖਿ ਮਹਲਤਿ ਮਰਣੁ ਵਿਸਾਰਿਆ ॥ kar furamaaeis khaaeaa vekh mahalat maran visaariaa | Asserting their authority, they eat, and beholding their mansions, they forget about death. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਜਰੁ ਆਈ ਜੋਬਨਿ ਹਾਰਿਆ ॥੧੭॥ jar aaee joban haariaa |17| But old age comes, and youth is lost. ||17|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਸਲੋਕੁ ਮਃ ੧ ॥ salok mahalaa 1 | Salok, First Mehl: - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਜੇ ਕਰਿ ਸੂਤਕੁ ਮੰਨੀਐ ਸਭ ਤੈ ਸੂਤਕੁ ਹੋਇ ॥ je kar sootak maneeai sabh tai sootak hoe | If one accepts the concept of impurity, then there is impurity everywhere. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਗੋਹੇ ਅਤੈ ਲਕੜੀ ਅੰਦਰਿ ਕੀੜਾ ਹੋਇ ॥ gohe atai lakarree andar keerraa hoe | In cow-dung and wood there are worms. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਜੇਤੇ ਦਾਣੇ ਅੰਨ ਕੇ ਜੀਆ ਬਾਝੁ ਨ ਕੋਇ ॥ jete daane an ke jeea baajh na koe | As many as are the grains of corn, none is without life. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਪਹਿਲਾ ਪਾਣੀ ਜੀਉ ਹੈ ਜਿਤੁ ਹਰਿਆ ਸਭੁ ਕੋਇ ॥ pahilaa paanee jeeo hai jit hariaa sabh koe | First, there is life in the water, by which everything else is made green. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਸੂਤਕੁ ਕਿਉ ਕਰਿ ਰਖੀਐ ਸੂਤਕੁ ਪਵੈ ਰਸੋਇ ॥ sootak kiau kar rakheeai sootak pavai rasoe | How can it be protected from impurity? It touches our own kitchen. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਨਾਨਕ ਸੂਤਕੁ ਏਵ ਨ ਉਤਰੈ ਗਿਆਨੁ ਉਤਾਰੇ ਧੋਇ ॥੧॥ naanak sootak ev na utarai giaan utaare dhoe |1| O Nanak, impurity cannot be removed in this way; it is washed away only by spiritual wisdom. ||1|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji

ਮਨ ਕਾ ਸੂਤਕੁ ਲੋਭੁ ਹੈ ਜਿਹਵਾ ਸੂਤਕੁ ਕੂੜੁ ॥ man kaa sootak lobh hai jihavaa sootak koorr | The impurity of the mind is greed, and the impurity of the tongue is falsehood. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਅਖੀ ਸੂਤਕੁ ਵੇਖਣਾ ਪਰ ਤ੍ਰਿਅ ਪਰ ਧਨ ਰੂਪੁ ॥ akhee sootak vekhanaa par tria par dhan roop | The impurity of the eyes is to gaze upon the beauty of another man’s wife, and his wealth. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਕੰਨੀ ਸੂਤਕੁ ਕੰਨਿ ਪੈ ਲਾਇਤਬਾਰੀ ਖਾਹਿ ॥ kanee sootak kan pai laaeitabaaree khaeh | The impurity of the ears is to listen to the slander of others. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਨਾਨਕ ਹੰਸਾ ਆਦਮੀ ਬਧੇ ਜਮ ਪੁਰਿ ਜਾਹਿ ॥੨॥ naanak hansaa aadamee badhe jam pur jaeh |2| O Nanak, the mortal’s soul goes, bound and gagged to the city of Death. ||2|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji

ਸਭੋ ਸੂਤਕੁ ਭਰਮੁ ਹੈ ਦੂਜੈ ਲਗੈ ਜਾਇ ॥ sabho sootak bharam hai doojai lagai jaae | All impurity comes from doubt and attachment to duality. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਜੰਮਣੁ ਮਰਣਾ ਹੁਕਮੁ ਹੈ ਭਾਣੈ ਆਵੈ ਜਾਇ ॥ jaman maranaa hukam hai bhaanai aavai jaae | Birth and death are subject to the Command of the Lord’s Will; through His Will we come and go. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਖਾਣਾ ਪੀਣਾ ਪਵਿਤ੍ਰੁ ਹੈ ਦਿਤੋਨੁ ਰਿਜਕੁ ਸੰਬਾਹਿ ॥ khaanaa peenaa pavitru hai diton rijak sanbaeh | Eating and drinking are pure, since the Lord gives nourishment to all. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਨਾਨਕ ਜਿਨੑੀ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਬੁਝਿਆ ਤਿਨੑਾ ਸੂਤਕੁ ਨਾਹਿ ॥੩॥ naanak jinaee guramukh bujhiaa tinaa sootak naeh |3| O Nanak, the Gurmukhs, who understand the Lord, are not stained by impurity. ||3|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
