ਓਨੑੀ ਮੰਦੈ ਪੈਰੁ ਨ ਰਖਿਓ ਕਰਿ ਸੁਕ੍ਰਿਤੁ ਧਰਮੁ ਕਮਾਇਆ ॥ onaee mandai pair na rakhio kar sukrit dharam kamaaeaa | They do not place their feet in sin, but do good deeds and live righteously in Dharma. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਓਨੑੀ ਦੁਨੀਆ ਤੋੜੇ ਬੰਧਨਾ ਅੰਨੁ ਪਾਣੀ ਥੋੜਾ ਖਾਇਆ ॥ onaee duneea torre bandhanaa an paanee thorraa khaaeaa | They burn away the bonds of the world, and eat a simple diet of grain and water. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਤੂੰ ਬਖਸੀਸੀ ਅਗਲਾ ਨਿਤ ਦੇਵਹਿ ਚੜਹਿ ਸਵਾਇਆ ॥ toon bakhaseesee agalaa nit deveh charreh savaaeaa | You are the Great Forgiver; You give continually, more and more each day. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਵਡਿਆਈ ਵਡਾ ਪਾਇਆ ॥੭॥ vaddiaaee vaddaa paaeaa |7| By His greatness, the Great Lord is obtained. ||7|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji

ਪੁਰਖਾਂ ਬਿਰਖਾਂ ਤੀਰਥਾਂ ਤਟਾਂ ਮੇਘਾਂ ਖੇਤਾਂਹ ॥ purakhaan birakhaan teerathaan tattaan meghaan khetaanh | Men, trees, sacred shrines of pilgrimage, banks of sacred rivers, clouds, fields, - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਦੀਪਾਂ ਲੋਆਂ ਮੰਡਲਾਂ ਖੰਡਾਂ ਵਰਭੰਡਾਂਹ ॥ deepaan loaan manddalaan khanddaan varabhanddaanh | islands, continents, worlds, solar systems, and universes; - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਅੰਡਜ ਜੇਰਜ ਉਤਭੁਜਾਂ ਖਾਣੀ ਸੇਤਜਾਂਹ ॥ anddaj jeraj utabhujaan khaanee setajaanh | the four sources of creation - born of eggs, born of the womb, born of the earth and born of sweat; - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਸੋ ਮਿਤਿ ਜਾਣੈ ਨਾਨਕਾ ਸਰਾਂ ਮੇਰਾਂ ਜੰਤਾਹ ॥ so mit jaanai naanakaa saraan meraan jantaah | oceans, mountains, and all beings - O Nanak, He alone knows their condition. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਨਾਨਕ ਜੰਤ ਉਪਾਇ ਕੈ ਸੰਮਾਲੇ ਸਭਨਾਹ ॥ naanak jant upaae kai samaale sabhanaah | O Nanak, having created the living beings, He cherishes them all. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਜਿਨਿ ਕਰਤੈ ਕਰਣਾ ਕੀਆ ਚਿੰਤਾ ਭਿ ਕਰਣੀ ਤਾਹ ॥ jin karatai karanaa keea chintaa bhi karanee taah | The Creator who created the creation, takes care of it as well. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਸੋ ਕਰਤਾ ਚਿੰਤਾ ਕਰੇ ਜਿਨਿ ਉਪਾਇਆ ਜਗੁ ॥ so karataa chintaa kare jin upaaeaa jag | He, the Creator who formed the world, cares for it. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਤਿਸੁ ਜੋਹਾਰੀ ਸੁਅਸਤਿ ਤਿਸੁ ਤਿਸੁ ਦੀਬਾਣੁ ਅਭਗੁ ॥ tis johaaree suasat tis tis deebaan abhag | Unto Him I bow and offer my reverence; His Royal Court is eternal. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਨਾਨਕ ਸਚੇ ਨਾਮ ਬਿਨੁ ਕਿਆ ਟਿਕਾ ਕਿਆ ਤਗੁ ॥੧॥ naanak sache naam bin kiaa ttikaa kiaa tag |1| O Nanak, without the True Name, of what use is the frontal mark of the Hindus, or their sacred thread? ||1|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji

ਲਖ ਨੇਕੀਆ ਚੰਗਿਆਈਆ ਲਖ ਪੁੰਨਾ ਪਰਵਾਣੁ ॥ lakh nekeea changiaaeea lakh punaa paravaan | Hundreds of thousands of virtues and good actions, and hundreds of thousands of blessed charities, - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਲਖ ਤਪ ਉਪਰਿ ਤੀਰਥਾਂ ਸਹਜ ਜੋਗ ਬੇਬਾਣ ॥ lakh tap upar teerathaan sehaj jog bebaan | hundreds of thousands of penances at sacred shrines, and the practice of Sehj Yoga in the wilderness, - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਲਖ ਸੂਰਤਣ ਸੰਗਰਾਮ ਰਣ ਮਹਿ ਛੁਟਹਿ ਪਰਾਣ ॥ lakh sooratan sangaraam ran meh chhutteh paraan | hundreds of thousands of courageous actions and giving up the breath of life on the field of battle, - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਲਖ ਸੁਰਤੀ ਲਖ ਗਿਆਨ ਧਿਆਨ ਪੜੀਅਹਿ ਪਾਠ ਪੁਰਾਣ ॥ lakh suratee lakh giaan dhiaan parreeeh paatth puraan | hundreds of thousands of divine understandings, hundreds of thousands of divine wisdoms and meditations and readings of the Vedas and the Puraanas - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਜਿਨਿ ਕਰਤੈ ਕਰਣਾ ਕੀਆ ਲਿਖਿਆ ਆਵਣ ਜਾਣੁ ॥ jin karatai karanaa keea likhiaa aavan jaan |
- before the Creator who created the creation, and who ordained coming and going, - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਨਾਨਕ ਮਤੀ ਮਿਥਿਆ ਕਰਮੁ ਸਚਾ ਨੀਸਾਣੁ ॥੨॥ naanak matee mithiaa karam sachaa neesaan |2| O Nanak, all these things are false. True is the Insignia of His Grace. ||2|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਪਉੜੀ ॥ paurree | Pauree: - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਸਚਾ ਸਾਹਿਬੁ ਏਕੁ ਤੂੰ ਜਿਨਿ ਸਚੋ ਸਚੁ ਵਰਤਾਇਆ ॥ sachaa saahib ek toon jin sacho sach varataaeaa | You alone are the True Lord. The Truth of Truths is pervading everywhere. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਜਿਸੁ ਤੂੰ ਦੇਹਿ ਤਿਸੁ ਮਿਲੈ ਸਚੁ ਤਾ ਤਿਨੑੀ ਸਚੁ ਕਮਾਇਆ ॥ jis toon dehi tis milai sach taa tinaee sach kamaaeaa | He alone receives the Truth, unto whom You give it; then, he practices Truth. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਸਤਿਗੁਰਿ ਮਿਲਿਐ ਸਚੁ ਪਾਇਆ ਜਿਨੑ ਕੈ ਹਿਰਦੈ ਸਚੁ ਵਸਾਇਆ ॥ satigur miliai sach paaeaa jina kai hiradai sach vasaaeaa | Meeting the True Guru, Truth is found. In His Heart, Truth is abiding. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਮੂਰਖ ਸਚੁ ਨ ਜਾਣਨੑੀ ਮਨਮੁਖੀ ਜਨਮੁ ਗਵਾਇਆ ॥ moorakh sach na jaananaee manamukhee janam gavaaeaa | The fools do not know the Truth. The self-willed manmukhs waste their lives away in vain. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਵਿਚਿ ਦੁਨੀਆ ਕਾਹੇ ਆਇਆ ॥੮॥ vich duneea kaahe aaeaa |8| Why have they even come into the world? ||8|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji

ਪੜਿ ਪੜਿ ਗਡੀ ਲਦੀਅਹਿ ਪੜਿ ਪੜਿ ਭਰੀਅਹਿ ਸਾਥ ॥ parr parr gaddee ladeeeh parr parr bhareeeh saath | You may read and read loads of books; you may read and study vast multitudes of books. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਪੜਿ ਪੜਿ ਬੇੜੀ ਪਾਈਐ ਪੜਿ ਪੜਿ ਗਡੀਅਹਿ ਖਾਤ ॥ parr parr berree paaeeai parr parr gaddeeeh khaat | You may read and read boat-loads of books; you may read and read and fill pits with them. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਪੜੀਅਹਿ ਜੇਤੇ ਬਰਸ ਬਰਸ ਪੜੀਅਹਿ ਜੇਤੇ ਮਾਸ ॥ parreeeh jete baras baras parreeeh jete maas | You may read them year after year; you may read them as many months are there are. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਪੜੀਐ ਜੇਤੀ ਆਰਜਾ ਪੜੀਅਹਿ ਜੇਤੇ ਸਾਸ ॥ parreeai jetee aarajaa parreeeh jete saas | You may read them all your life; you may read them with every breath. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਨਾਨਕ ਲੇਖੈ ਇਕ ਗਲ ਹੋਰੁ ਹਉਮੈ ਝਖਣਾ ਝਾਖ ॥੧॥ naanak lekhai ik gal hor haumai jhakhanaa jhaakh |1| O Nanak, only one thing is of any account: everything else is useless babbling and idle talk in ego. ||1|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji

ਲਿਖਿ ਲਿਖਿ ਪੜਿਆ ॥ ਤੇਤਾ ਕੜਿਆ ॥ likh likh parriaa | tetaa karriaa | The more one write and reads, the more one burns. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਬਹੁ ਤੀਰਥ ਭਵਿਆ ॥ ਤੇਤੋ ਲਵਿਆ ॥ bahu teerath bhaviaa | teto laviaa | The more one wanders at sacred shrines of pilgrimage, the more one talks uselessly. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਬਹੁ ਭੇਖ ਕੀਆ ਦੇਹੀ ਦੁਖੁ ਦੀਆ ॥ bahu bhekh keea dehee dukh deea | The more one wears religious robes, the more pain he causes his body. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਸਹੁ ਵੇ ਜੀਆ ਅਪਣਾ ਕੀਆ ॥ sahu ve jeea apanaa keea | O my soul, you must endure the consequences of your own actions. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਅੰਨੁ ਨ ਖਾਇਆ ਸਾਦੁ ਗਵਾਇਆ ॥ an na khaaeaa saad gavaaeaa | One who does not eat the corn, misses out on the taste. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਬਹੁ ਦੁਖੁ ਪਾਇਆ ਦੂਜਾ ਭਾਇਆ ॥ bahu dukh paaeaa doojaa bhaaeaa | One obtains great pain, in the love of duality. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਬਸਤ੍ਰ ਨ ਪਹਿਰੈ ॥ ਅਹਿਨਿਸਿ ਕਹਰੈ ॥ basatr na pahirai | ahinis kaharai | One who does not wear any clothes, suffers night and day. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਮੋਨਿ ਵਿਗੂਤਾ ॥ ਕਿਉ ਜਾਗੈ ਗੁਰ ਬਿਨੁ ਸੂਤਾ ॥ mon vigootaa | kiau jaagai gur bin sootaa | Through silence, he is ruined. How can the sleeping one be awakened without the Guru? - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਪਗ ਉਪੇਤਾਣਾ ॥ ਅਪਣਾ ਕੀਆ ਕਮਾਣਾ ॥ pag upetaanaa | apanaa keea kamaanaa | One who goes barefoot suffers by his own actions. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਅਲੁ ਮਲੁ ਖਾਈ ਸਿਰਿ ਛਾਈ ਪਾਈ ॥ al mal khaaee sir chhaaee paaee | One who eats filth and throws ashes on his head - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਮੂਰਖਿ ਅੰਧੈ ਪਤਿ ਗਵਾਈ ॥ moorakh andhai pat gavaaee | the blind fool loses his honor. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਵਿਣੁ ਨਾਵੈ ਕਿਛੁ ਥਾਇ ਨ ਪਾਈ ॥ vin naavai kichh thaae na paaee | Without the Name, nothing is of any use. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਰਹੈ ਬੇਬਾਣੀ ਮੜੀ ਮਸਾਣੀ ॥ rahai bebaanee marree masaanee | One who lives in the wilderness, in cemetaries and cremation grounds - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਅੰਧੁ ਨ ਜਾਣੈ ਫਿਰਿ ਪਛੁਤਾਣੀ ॥ andh na jaanai fir pachhutaanee |
- that blind man does not know the Lord; he regrets and repents in the end. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
