ਗਿਆਨੁ ਨ ਗਲੀਈ ਢੂਢੀਐ ਕਥਨਾ ਕਰੜਾ ਸਾਰੁ ॥ giaan na galeeee dtoodteeai kathanaa kararraa saar | Wisdom cannot be found through mere words. To explain it is as hard as iron. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਕਰਮਿ ਮਿਲੈ ਤਾ ਪਾਈਐ ਹੋਰ ਹਿਕਮਤਿ ਹੁਕਮੁ ਖੁਆਰੁ ॥੨॥ karam milai taa paaeeai hor hikamat hukam khuaar |2| When the Lord bestows His Grace, then alone it is received; other tricks and orders are useless. ||2|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji

ਨਦਰਿ ਕਰਹਿ ਜੇ ਆਪਣੀ ਤਾ ਨਦਰੀ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਪਾਇਆ ॥ nadar kareh je aapanee taa nadaree satigur paaeaa | If the Merciful Lord shows His Mercy, then the True Guru is found. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਏਹੁ ਜੀਉ ਬਹੁਤੇ ਜਨਮ ਭਰੰਮਿਆ ਤਾ ਸਤਿਗੁਰਿ ਸਬਦੁ ਸੁਣਾਇਆ ॥ ehu jeeo bahute janam bharamiaa taa satigur sabad sunaaeaa | This soul wandered through countless incarnations, until the True Guru instructed it in the Word of the Shabad. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਜੇਵਡੁ ਦਾਤਾ ਕੋ ਨਹੀ ਸਭਿ ਸੁਣਿਅਹੁ ਲੋਕ ਸਬਾਇਆ ॥ satigur jevadd daataa ko nahee sabh suniahu lok sabaaeaa | There is no giver as great as the True Guru; hear this, all you people. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਸਤਿਗੁਰਿ ਮਿਲਿਐ ਸਚੁ ਪਾਇਆ ਜਿਨੑੀ ਵਿਚਹੁ ਆਪੁ ਗਵਾਇਆ ॥ satigur miliai sach paaeaa jinaee vichahu aap gavaaeaa | Meeting the True Guru, the True Lord is found; He removes self-conceit from within, - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਜਿਨਿ ਸਚੋ ਸਚੁ ਬੁਝਾਇਆ ॥੪॥ jin sacho sach bujhaaeaa |4| and instructs us in the Truth of Truths. ||4|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji

ਘੜੀਆ ਸਭੇ ਗੋਪੀਆ ਪਹਰ ਕੰਨੑ ਗੋਪਾਲ ॥ gharreea sabhe gopeea pehar kana gopaal | All the hours are the milk-maids, and the quarters of the day are the Krishnas. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਗਹਣੇ ਪਉਣੁ ਪਾਣੀ ਬੈਸੰਤਰੁ ਚੰਦੁ ਸੂਰਜੁ ਅਵਤਾਰ ॥ gahane paun paanee baisantar chand sooraj avataar | The wind, water and fire are the ornaments; the sun and moon are the incarnations. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਸਗਲੀ ਧਰਤੀ ਮਾਲੁ ਧਨੁ ਵਰਤਣਿ ਸਰਬ ਜੰਜਾਲ ॥ sagalee dharatee maal dhan varatan sarab janjaal | All of the earth, property, wealth and articles are all entanglements. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਨਾਨਕ ਮੁਸੈ ਗਿਆਨ ਵਿਹੂਣੀ ਖਾਇ ਗਇਆ ਜਮਕਾਲੁ ॥੧॥ naanak musai giaan vihoonee khaae geaa jamakaal |1| O Nanak, without divine knowledge, one is plundered, and devoured by the Messenger of Death. ||1|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji

ਵਾਇਨਿ ਚੇਲੇ ਨਚਨਿ ਗੁਰ ॥ vaaein chele nachan gur | The disciples play the music, and the gurus dance. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਪੈਰ ਹਲਾਇਨਿ ਫੇਰਨਿੑ ਸਿਰ ॥ pair halaaein ferana sir | They move their feet and roll their heads. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਉਡਿ ਉਡਿ ਰਾਵਾ ਝਾਟੈ ਪਾਇ ॥ audd udd raavaa jhaattai paae | The dust flies and falls upon their hair. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਵੇਖੈ ਲੋਕੁ ਹਸੈ ਘਰਿ ਜਾਇ ॥ vekhai lok hasai ghar jaae | Beholding them, the people laugh, and then go home. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਰੋਟੀਆ ਕਾਰਣਿ ਪੂਰਹਿ ਤਾਲ ॥ rotteea kaaran pooreh taal | They beat the drums for the sake of bread. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਆਪੁ ਪਛਾੜਹਿ ਧਰਤੀ ਨਾਲਿ ॥ aap pachhaarreh dharatee naal | They throw themselves upon the ground. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਗਾਵਨਿ ਗੋਪੀਆ ਗਾਵਨਿ ਕਾਨੑ ॥ gaavan gopeea gaavan kaana | They sing of the milk-maids, they sing of the Krishnas. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਗਾਵਨਿ ਸੀਤਾ ਰਾਜੇ ਰਾਮ ॥ gaavan seetaa raaje raam | They sing of Sitas, and Ramas and kings. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਨਿਰਭਉ ਨਿਰੰਕਾਰੁ ਸਚੁ ਨਾਮੁ ॥ nirbhau nirankaar sach naam | The Lord is fearless and formless; His Name is True. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਜਾ ਕਾ ਕੀਆ ਸਗਲ ਜਹਾਨੁ ॥ jaa kaa keea sagal jahaan | The entire universe is His Creation. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਸੇਵਕ ਸੇਵਹਿ ਕਰਮਿ ਚੜਾਉ ॥ sevak seveh karam charraau | Those servants, whose destiny is awakened, serve the Lord. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਭਿੰਨੀ ਰੈਣਿ ਜਿਨੑਾ ਮਨਿ ਚਾਉ ॥ bhinee rain jinaa man chaau | The night of their lives is cool with dew; their minds are filled with love for the Lord. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਸਿਖੀ ਸਿਖਿਆ ਗੁਰ ਵੀਚਾਰਿ ॥ sikhee sikhiaa gur veechaar | Contemplating the Guru, I have been taught these teachings; - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਨਦਰੀ ਕਰਮਿ ਲਘਾਏ ਪਾਰਿ ॥ nadaree karam laghaae paar | granting His Grace, He carries His servants across. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਕੋਲੂ ਚਰਖਾ ਚਕੀ ਚਕੁ ॥ koloo charakhaa chakee chak | The oil-press, the spinning wheel, the grinding stones, the potter’s wheel, - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਥਲ ਵਾਰੋਲੇ ਬਹੁਤੁ ਅਨੰਤੁ ॥ thal vaarole bahut anant | the numerous, countless whirlwinds in the desert, - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਲਾਟੂ ਮਾਧਾਣੀਆ ਅਨਗਾਹ ॥ laattoo maadhaaneea anagaah | the spinning tops, the churning sticks, the threshers, - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਪੰਖੀ ਭਉਦੀਆ ਲੈਨਿ ਨ ਸਾਹ ॥ pankhee bhaudeea lain na saah | the breathless tumblings of the birds, - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਸੂਐ ਚਾੜਿ ਭਵਾਈਅਹਿ ਜੰਤ ॥ sooai chaarr bhavaaeeeh jant | and the men moving round and round on spindles - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਨਾਨਕ ਭਉਦਿਆ ਗਣਤ ਨ ਅੰਤ ॥ naanak bhaudiaa ganat na ant | O Nanak, the tumblers are countless and endless. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਬੰਧਨ ਬੰਧਿ ਭਵਾਏ ਸੋਇ ॥ bandhan bandh bhavaae soe | The Lord binds us in bondage - so do we spin around. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਪਇਐ ਕਿਰਤਿ ਨਚੈ ਸਭੁ ਕੋਇ ॥ peiai kirat nachai sabh koe | According to their actions, so do all people dance. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਨਚਿ ਨਚਿ ਹਸਹਿ ਚਲਹਿ ਸੇ ਰੋਇ ॥ nach nach haseh chaleh se roe | Those who dance and dance and laugh, shall weep on their ultimate departure. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਉਡਿ ਨ ਜਾਹੀ ਸਿਧ ਨ ਹੋਹਿ ॥ audd na jaahee sidh na hohi | They do not fly to the heavens, nor do they become Siddhas. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਨਚਣੁ ਕੁਦਣੁ ਮਨ ਕਾ ਚਾਉ ॥ nachan kudan man kaa chaau | They dance and jump around on the urgings of their minds. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਨਾਨਕ ਜਿਨੑ ਮਨਿ ਭਉ ਤਿਨੑਾ ਮਨਿ ਭਾਉ ॥੨॥ naanak jina man bhau tinaa man bhaau |2| O Nanak, those whose minds are filled with the Fear of God, have the love of God in their minds as well. ||2|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji

ਨਾਉ ਤੇਰਾ ਨਿਰੰਕਾਰੁ ਹੈ ਨਾਇ ਲਇਐ ਨਰਕਿ ਨ ਜਾਈਐ ॥ naau teraa nirankaar hai naae leiai narak na jaaeeai | Your Name is the Fearless Lord; chanting Your Name, one does not have to go to hell. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਜੀਉ ਪਿੰਡੁ ਸਭੁ ਤਿਸ ਦਾ ਦੇ ਖਾਜੈ ਆਖਿ ਗਵਾਈਐ ॥ jeeo pindd sabh tis daa de khaajai aakh gavaaeeai | Soul and body all belong to Him; asking Him to give us sustenance is a waste. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਜੇ ਲੋੜਹਿ ਚੰਗਾ ਆਪਣਾ ਕਰਿ ਪੁੰਨਹੁ ਨੀਚੁ ਸਦਾਈਐ ॥ je lorreh changaa aapanaa kar punahu neech sadaaeeai | If you yearn for goodness, then perform good deeds and feel humble. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਜੇ ਜਰਵਾਣਾ ਪਰਹਰੈ ਜਰੁ ਵੇਸ ਕਰੇਦੀ ਆਈਐ ॥ je jaravaanaa paraharai jar ves karedee aaeeai | Even if you remove the signs of old age, old age shall still come in the guise of death. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਕੋ ਰਹੈ ਨ ਭਰੀਐ ਪਾਈਐ ॥੫॥ ko rahai na bhareeai paaeeai |5| No one remains here when the count of the breaths is full. ||5|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji

ਮੁਸਲਮਾਨਾ ਸਿਫਤਿ ਸਰੀਅਤਿ ਪੜਿ ਪੜਿ ਕਰਹਿ ਬੀਚਾਰੁ ॥ musalamaanaa sifat sareeat parr parr kareh beechaar | The Muslims praise the Islamic law; they read and reflect upon it. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਬੰਦੇ ਸੇ ਜਿ ਪਵਹਿ ਵਿਚਿ ਬੰਦੀ ਵੇਖਣ ਕਉ ਦੀਦਾਰੁ ॥ bande se ji paveh vich bandee vekhan kau deedaar | The Lord’s bound servants are those who bind themselves to see the Lord’s Vision. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਹਿੰਦੂ ਸਾਲਾਹੀ ਸਾਲਾਹਨਿ ਦਰਸਨਿ ਰੂਪਿ ਅਪਾਰੁ ॥ hindoo saalaahee saalaahan darasan roop apaar | The Hindus praise the Praiseworthy Lord; the Blessed Vision of His Darshan, His form is incomparable. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਤੀਰਥਿ ਨਾਵਹਿ ਅਰਚਾ ਪੂਜਾ ਅਗਰ ਵਾਸੁ ਬਹਕਾਰੁ ॥ teerath naaveh arachaa poojaa agar vaas bahakaar | They bathe at sacred shrines of pilgrimage, making offerings of flowers, and burning incense before idols. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਜੋਗੀ ਸੁੰਨਿ ਧਿਆਵਨਿੑ ਜੇਤੇ ਅਲਖ ਨਾਮੁ ਕਰਤਾਰੁ ॥ jogee sun dhiaavana jete alakh naam karataar | The Yogis meditate on the absolute Lord there; they call the Creator the Unseen Lord. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
