ਮਾਲੁ ਜੋਬਨੁ ਛੋਡਿ ਵੈਸੀ ਰਹਿਓ ਪੈਨਣੁ ਖਾਇਆ ॥ maal joban chhodd vaisee rahio painan khaaeaa | Abandoning your wealth and youth, you will have to leave, without any food or clothing. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਨਾਨਕ ਕਮਾਣਾ ਸੰਗਿ ਜੁਲਿਆ ਨਹ ਜਾਇ ਕਿਰਤੁ ਮਿਟਾਇਆ ॥੧॥ naanak kamaanaa sang juliaa neh jaae kirat mittaaeaa |1| O Nanak, only your actions shall go with you; the consequences of your actions cannot be erased. ||1|| - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਫਾਥੋਹੁ ਮਿਰਗ ਜਿਵੈ ਪੇਖਿ ਰੈਣਿ ਚੰਦ੍ਰਾਇਣੁ ॥ faathohu mirag jivai pekh rain chandraaein | Like the deer, captured on a moon-lit night, - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਸੂਖਹੁ ਦੂਖ ਭਏ ਨਿਤ ਪਾਪ ਕਮਾਇਣੁ ॥ sookhahu dookh bhe nit paap kamaaein | so does the constant commission of sins turn pleasure into pain. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਪਾਪਾ ਕਮਾਣੇ ਛਡਹਿ ਨਾਹੀ ਲੈ ਚਲੇ ਘਤਿ ਗਲਾਵਿਆ ॥ paapaa kamaane chhaddeh naahee lai chale ghat galaaviaa | The sins you have committed shall not leave you; placing the noose around your neck, they shall lead you away. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਹਰਿਚੰਦਉਰੀ ਦੇਖਿ ਮੂਠਾ ਕੂੜੁ ਸੇਜਾ ਰਾਵਿਆ ॥ harichandauree dekh mootthaa koorr sejaa raaviaa | Beholding an illusion, you are deceived, and on your bed, you enjoy a false lover. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਲਬਿ ਲੋਭਿ ਅਹੰਕਾਰਿ ਮਾਤਾ ਗਰਬਿ ਭਇਆ ਸਮਾਇਣੁ ॥ lab lobh ahankaar maataa garab bheaa samaaein | You are intoxicated with greed, avarice and egotism; you are engrossed in self-conceit. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਨਾਨਕ ਮ੍ਰਿਗ ਅਗਿਆਨਿ ਬਿਨਸੇ ਨਹ ਮਿਟੈ ਆਵਣੁ ਜਾਇਣੁ ॥੨॥ naanak mrig agiaan binase neh mittai aavan jaaein |2| O Nanak, like the deer, you are being destroyed by your ignorance; your comings and goings shall never end. ||2|| - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਮਿਠੈ ਮਖੁ ਮੁਆ ਕਿਉ ਲਏ ਓਡਾਰੀ ॥ mitthai makh muaa kiau le oddaaree | The fly is caught in the sweet candy - how can it fly away? - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਹਸਤੀ ਗਰਤਿ ਪਇਆ ਕਿਉ ਤਰੀਐ ਤਾਰੀ ॥ hasatee garat peaa kiau tareeai taaree | The elephant has fallen into the pit - how can it escape? - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਤਰਣੁ ਦੁਹੇਲਾ ਭਇਆ ਖਿਨ ਮਹਿ ਖਸਮੁ ਚਿਤਿ ਨ ਆਇਓ ॥ taran duhelaa bheaa khin meh khasam chit na aaeo | It shall be so difficult to swim across, for one who does not remember the Lord and Master, even for an instant. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਦੂਖਾ ਸਜਾਈ ਗਣਤ ਨਾਹੀ ਕੀਆ ਅਪਣਾ ਪਾਇਓ ॥ dookhaa sajaaee ganat naahee keea apanaa paaeo | His sufferings and punishments are beyond reckoning; he receives the consequences of his own actions. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਗੁਝਾ ਕਮਾਣਾ ਪ੍ਰਗਟੁ ਹੋਆ ਈਤ ਉਤਹਿ ਖੁਆਰੀ ॥ gujhaa kamaanaa pragatt hoaa eet uteh khuaaree | His secret deeds are exposed, and he is ruined here and hereafter. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਨਾਨਕ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਬਾਝੁ ਮੂਠਾ ਮਨਮੁਖੋ ਅਹੰਕਾਰੀ ॥੩॥ naanak satigur baajh mootthaa manamukho ahankaaree |3| O Nanak, without the True Guru, the self-willed egotistical manmukh is defrauded. ||3|| - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਹਰਿ ਕੇ ਦਾਸ ਜੀਵੇ ਲਗਿ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਕੀ ਚਰਣੀ ॥ har ke daas jeeve lag prabh kee charanee | The Lord’s slaves live by holding on to God’s feet. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਕੰਠਿ ਲਗਾਇ ਲੀਏ ਤਿਸੁ ਠਾਕੁਰ ਸਰਣੀ ॥ kantth lagaae lee tis tthaakur saranee | The Lord and Master embraces those who seek His Sanctuary. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਬਲ ਬੁਧਿ ਗਿਆਨੁ ਧਿਆਨੁ ਅਪਣਾ ਆਪਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਜਪਾਇਆ ॥ bal budh giaan dhiaan apanaa aap naam japaaeaa | He blesses them with power, wisdom, knowledge and meditation; He Himself inspires them to chant His Name. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਸਾਧਸੰਗਤਿ ਆਪਿ ਹੋਆ ਆਪਿ ਜਗਤੁ ਤਰਾਇਆ ॥ saadhasangat aap hoaa aap jagat taraaeaa | He Himself is the Saadh Sangat, the Company of the Holy, and He Himself saves the world. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਰਾਖਿ ਲੀਏ ਰਖਣਹਾਰੈ ਸਦਾ ਨਿਰਮਲ ਕਰਣੀ ॥ raakh lee rakhanahaarai sadaa niramal karanee | The Preserver preserves those whose actions are always pure. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਨਾਨਕ ਨਰਕਿ ਨ ਜਾਹਿ ਕਬਹੂੰ ਹਰਿ ਸੰਤ ਹਰਿ ਕੀ ਸਰਣੀ ॥੪॥੨॥੧੧॥ naanak narak na jaeh kabahoon har sant har kee saranee |4|2|11| O Nanak, they never have to go to hell; the Lord’s Saints are under the Lord’s Protection. ||4||2||11|| - Guru Arjan Dev Ji

ਵੰਞੁ ਮੇਰੇ ਆਲਸਾ ਹਰਿ ਪਾਸਿ ਬੇਨੰਤੀ ॥ vany mere aalasaa har paas benantee | Be gone, O my laziness, that I may pray to the Lord. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਰਾਵਉ ਸਹੁ ਆਪਨੜਾ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਸੰਗਿ ਸੋਹੰਤੀ ॥ raavau sahu aapanarraa prabh sang sohantee | I enjoy my Husband Lord, and look beautiful with my God. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਸੰਗੇ ਸੋਹੰਤੀ ਕੰਤ ਸੁਆਮੀ ਦਿਨਸੁ ਰੈਣੀ ਰਾਵੀਐ ॥ sange sohantee kant suaamee dinas rainee raaveeai | I look beautiful in the Company of my Husband Lord; I enjoy my Lord Master day and night. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਸਾਸਿ ਸਾਸਿ ਚਿਤਾਰਿ ਜੀਵਾ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਪੇਖਿ ਹਰਿ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਵੀਐ ॥ saas saas chitaar jeevaa prabh pekh har gun gaaveeai | I live by remembering God with each and every breath, beholding the Lord, and singing His Glorious Praises. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਬਿਰਹਾ ਲਜਾਇਆ ਦਰਸੁ ਪਾਇਆ ਅਮਿਉ ਦ੍ਰਿਸਟਿ ਸਿੰਚੰਤੀ ॥ birahaa lajaaeaa daras paaeaa amiau drisatt sinchantee | The pain of separation has grown shy, for I have obtained the Blessed Vision of His Darshan; His Ambrosial Glance of Grace has filled me with bliss. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਬਿਨਵੰਤਿ ਨਾਨਕੁ ਮੇਰੀ ਇਛ ਪੁੰਨੀ ਮਿਲੇ ਜਿਸੁ ਖੋਜੰਤੀ ॥੧॥ binavant naanak meree ichh punee mile jis khojantee |1| Prays Nanak, my desires are fulfilled; I have met the One I was seeking. ||1|| - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਨਸਿ ਵੰਞਹੁ ਕਿਲਵਿਖਹੁ ਕਰਤਾ ਘਰਿ ਆਇਆ ॥ nas vanyahu kilavikhahu karataa ghar aaeaa | Run away, O sins; the Creator has entered my home. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਦੂਤਹ ਦਹਨੁ ਭਇਆ ਗੋਵਿੰਦੁ ਪ੍ਰਗਟਾਇਆ ॥ dootah dehan bheaa govind pragattaaeaa | The demons within me have been burnt; the Lord of the Universe has revealed Himself to me. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਪ੍ਰਗਟੇ ਗੁਪਾਲ ਗੋਬਿੰਦ ਲਾਲਨ ਸਾਧਸੰਗਿ ਵਖਾਣਿਆ ॥ pragatte gupaal gobind laalan saadhasang vakhaaniaa | The Beloved Lord of the Universe, the Lord of the World has revealed Himself; in the Saadh Sangat, the Company of the Holy, I chant His Name. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਆਚਰਜੁ ਡੀਠਾ ਅਮਿਉ ਵੂਠਾ ਗੁਰ ਪ੍ਰਸਾਦੀ ਜਾਣਿਆ ॥ aacharaj ddeetthaa amiau vootthaa gur prasaadee jaaniaa | I have seen the Wondrous Lord; He showers His Ambrosial Nectar upon me, and by Guru’s Grace, I know Him. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਮਨਿ ਸਾਂਤਿ ਆਈ ਵਜੀ ਵਧਾਈ ਨਹ ਅੰਤੁ ਜਾਈ ਪਾਇਆ ॥ man saant aaee vajee vadhaaee neh ant jaaee paaeaa | My mind is at peace, resounding with the music of bliss; the Lord’s limits cannot be found. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਬਿਨਵੰਤਿ ਨਾਨਕ ਸੁਖ ਸਹਜਿ ਮੇਲਾ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਆਪਿ ਬਣਾਇਆ ॥੨॥ binavant naanak sukh sehaj melaa prabhoo aap banaaeaa |2| Prays Nanak, God brings us to union with Himself, in the poise of celestial peace. ||2|| - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਨਰਕ ਨ ਡੀਠੜਿਆ ਸਿਮਰਤ ਨਾਰਾਇਣ ॥ narak na ddeettharriaa simarat naaraaein | They do not have to see hell, if they remember the Lord in meditation. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਜੈ ਜੈ ਧਰਮੁ ਕਰੇ ਦੂਤ ਭਏ ਪਲਾਇਣ ॥ jai jai dharam kare doot bhe palaaein | The Righteous Judge of Dharma applauds them, and the Messenger of Death runs away from them. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਧਰਮ ਧੀਰਜ ਸਹਜ ਸੁਖੀਏ ਸਾਧਸੰਗਤਿ ਹਰਿ ਭਜੇ ॥ dharam dheeraj sehaj sukhee saadhasangat har bhaje | Dharmic faith, patience, peace and poise are obtained by vibrating upon the Lord in the Saadh Sangat, the Company of the Holy. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਕਰਿ ਅਨੁਗ੍ਰਹੁ ਰਾਖਿ ਲੀਨੇ ਮੋਹ ਮਮਤਾ ਸਭ ਤਜੇ ॥ kar anugrahu raakh leene moh mamataa sabh taje | Showering His Blessings, He saves those who renounce all attachments and egotism. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਗਹਿ ਕੰਠਿ ਲਾਏ ਗੁਰਿ ਮਿਲਾਏ ਗੋਵਿੰਦ ਜਪਤ ਅਘਾਇਣ ॥ geh kantth laae gur milaae govind japat aghaaein | The Lord embraces us; the Guru unites us with Him. Meditating on the Lord of the Universe, we are satisfied. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਬਿਨਵੰਤਿ ਨਾਨਕ ਸਿਮਰਿ ਸੁਆਮੀ ਸਗਲ ਆਸ ਪੁਜਾਇਣ ॥੩॥ binavant naanak simar suaamee sagal aas pujaaein |3| Prays Nanak, remembering the Lord and Master in meditation, all hopes are fulfilled. ||3|| - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
