ਅਪਰਾਧੀ ਮਤਿਹੀਨੁ ਨਿਰਗੁਨੁ ਅਨਾਥੁ ਨੀਚੁ ॥ aparaadhee matiheen niragun anaath neech | I am a sinner, devoid of wisdom, worthless, destitute and vile. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਸਠ ਕਠੋਰੁ ਕੁਲਹੀਨੁ ਬਿਆਪਤ ਮੋਹ ਕੀਚੁ ॥ satth katthor kulaheen biaapat moh keech | I am deceitful, hard-hearted, lowly and entangled in the mud of emotional attachment. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਮਲ ਭਰਮ ਕਰਮ ਅਹੰ ਮਮਤਾ ਮਰਣੁ ਚੀਤਿ ਨ ਆਵਏ ॥ mal bharam karam ahan mamataa maran cheet na aave | I am stuck in the filth of doubt and egotistical actions, and I try not to think of death. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਬਨਿਤਾ ਬਿਨੋਦ ਅਨੰਦ ਮਾਇਆ ਅਗਿਆਨਤਾ ਲਪਟਾਵਏ ॥ banitaa binod anand maaeaa agiaanataa lapattaave | In ignorance, I cling to the pleasures of woman and the joys of Maya. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਖਿਸੈ ਜੋਬਨੁ ਬਧੈ ਜਰੂਆ ਦਿਨ ਨਿਹਾਰੇ ਸੰਗਿ ਮੀਚੁ ॥ khisai joban badhai jarooaa din nihaare sang meech | My youth is wasting away, old age is approaching, and Death, my companion, is counting my days. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਬਿਨਵੰਤਿ ਨਾਨਕ ਆਸ ਤੇਰੀ ਸਰਣਿ ਸਾਧੂ ਰਾਖੁ ਨੀਚੁ ॥੨॥ binavant naanak aas teree saran saadhoo raakh neech |2| Prays Nanak, my hope is in You, Lord; please preserve me, the lowly one, in the Sanctuary of the Holy. ||2|| - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਭਰਮੇ ਜਨਮ ਅਨੇਕ ਸੰਕਟ ਮਹਾ ਜੋਨ ॥ bharame janam anek sankatt mahaa jon | I have wandered through countless incarnations, suffering terrible pain in these lives. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਲਪਟਿ ਰਹਿਓ ਤਿਹ ਸੰਗਿ ਮੀਠੇ ਭੋਗ ਸੋਨ ॥ lapatt rahio tih sang meetthe bhog son | I am entangled in sweet pleasures and gold. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਭ੍ਰਮਤ ਭਾਰ ਅਗਨਤ ਆਇਓ ਬਹੁ ਪ੍ਰਦੇਸਹ ਧਾਇਓ ॥ bhramat bhaar aganat aaeo bahu pradesah dhaaeo | After wandering around with such great loads of sin, I have come, after wandering through so many foreign lands. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਅਬ ਓਟ ਧਾਰੀ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਮੁਰਾਰੀ ਸਰਬ ਸੁਖ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਇਓ ॥ ab ott dhaaree prabh muraaree sarab sukh har naaeo | Now, I have taken the protection of God, and I have found total peace in the Name of the Lord. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਰਾਖਨਹਾਰੇ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਪਿਆਰੇ ਮੁਝ ਤੇ ਕਛੂ ਨ ਹੋਆ ਹੋਨ ॥ raakhanahaare prabh piaare mujh te kachhoo na hoaa hon | God, my Beloved, is my protector; nothing was done, or will ever be done, by myself alone. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਸੂਖ ਸਹਜ ਆਨੰਦ ਨਾਨਕ ਕ੍ਰਿਪਾ ਤੇਰੀ ਤਰੈ ਭਉਨ ॥੩॥ sookh sehaj aanand naanak kripaa teree tarai bhaun |3| I have found peace, poise and bliss, O Nanak; by Your mercy, I swim across the world-ocean. ||3|| - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਨਾਮ ਧਾਰੀਕ ਉਧਾਰੇ ਭਗਤਹ ਸੰਸਾ ਕਉਨ ॥ naam dhaareek udhaare bhagatah sansaa kaun | You saved those who only pretended to believe, so what doubts should Your true devotees have? - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਜੇਨ ਕੇਨ ਪਰਕਾਰੇ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਜਸੁ ਸੁਨਹੁ ਸ੍ਰਵਨ ॥ jen ken parakaare har har jas sunahu sravan | By every means possible, listen to the Praises of the Lord with your ears. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਸੁਨਿ ਸ੍ਰਵਨ ਬਾਨੀ ਪੁਰਖ ਗਿਆਨੀ ਮਨਿ ਨਿਧਾਨਾ ਪਾਵਹੇ ॥ sun sravan baanee purakh giaanee man nidhaanaa paavahe | Listen with your ears to the Word of the Lord’s Bani, the hymns of spiritual wisdom; thus you shall obtain the treasure in your mind. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਹਰਿ ਰੰਗਿ ਰਾਤੇ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਬਿਧਾਤੇ ਰਾਮ ਕੇ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਵਹੇ ॥ har rang raate prabh bidhaate raam ke gun gaavahe | Attuned to the Love of the Lord God, the Architect of Destiny, sing the Glorious Praises of the Lord. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਬਸੁਧ ਕਾਗਦ ਬਨਰਾਜ ਕਲਮਾ ਲਿਖਣ ਕਉ ਜੇ ਹੋਇ ਪਵਨ ॥ basudh kaagad banaraaj kalamaa likhan kau je hoe pavan | The earth is the paper, the forest is the pen and the wind is the writer, - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਬੇਅੰਤ ਅੰਤੁ ਨ ਜਾਇ ਪਾਇਆ ਗਹੀ ਨਾਨਕ ਚਰਣ ਸਰਨ ॥੪॥੫॥੮॥ beant ant na jaae paaeaa gahee naanak charan saran |4|5|8| but still, the end of the endless Lord cannot be found. O Nanak, I have taken to the Sanctuary of His lotus feet. ||4||5||8|| - Guru Arjan Dev Ji

ਪੁਰਖ ਪਤੇ ਭਗਵਾਨ ਤਾ ਕੀ ਸਰਣਿ ਗਹੀ ॥ purakh pate bhagavaan taa kee saran gahee | The Primal Lord is the Lord God of all beings. I have taken to His Sanctuary. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਨਿਰਭਉ ਭਏ ਪਰਾਨ ਚਿੰਤਾ ਸਗਲ ਲਹੀ ॥ nirbhau bhe paraan chintaa sagal lahee | My life has become fearless, and all my anxieties have been removed. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਮਾਤ ਪਿਤਾ ਸੁਤ ਮੀਤ ਸੁਰਿਜਨ ਇਸਟ ਬੰਧਪ ਜਾਣਿਆ ॥ maat pitaa sut meet surijan isatt bandhap jaaniaa | I know the Lord as my mother, father, son, friend, well-wisher and close relative. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਗਹਿ ਕੰਠਿ ਲਾਇਆ ਗੁਰਿ ਮਿਲਾਇਆ ਜਸੁ ਬਿਮਲ ਸੰਤ ਵਖਾਣਿਆ ॥ geh kantth laaeaa gur milaaeaa jas bimal sant vakhaaniaa | The Guru has led me to embrace Him; the Saints chant His Pure Praises. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਬੇਅੰਤ ਗੁਣ ਅਨੇਕ ਮਹਿਮਾ ਕੀਮਤਿ ਕਛੂ ਨ ਜਾਇ ਕਹੀ ॥ beant gun anek mahimaa keemat kachhoo na jaae kahee | His Glorious Virtues are infinite, and His greatness is unlimited. His value cannot be described at all. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਪ੍ਰਭ ਏਕ ਅਨਿਕ ਅਲਖ ਠਾਕੁਰ ਓਟ ਨਾਨਕ ਤਿਸੁ ਗਹੀ ॥੧॥ prabh ek anik alakh tthaakur ott naanak tis gahee |1| God is the One and only, the Unseen Lord and Master; O Nanak, I have grasped His protection. ||1|| - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਬਨੁ ਸੰਸਾਰੁ ਸਹਾਈ ਆਪਿ ਭਏ ॥ amrit ban sansaar sahaaee aap bhe | The world is a pool of nectar, when the Lord becomes our helper. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮੁ ਉਰ ਹਾਰੁ ਬਿਖੁ ਕੇ ਦਿਵਸ ਗਏ ॥ raam naam ur haar bikh ke divas ge | One who wears the necklace of the Lord’s Name - his days of suffering are ended. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਗਤੁ ਭਰਮ ਮੋਹ ਬਿਕਾਰ ਬਿਨਸੇ ਜੋਨਿ ਆਵਣ ਸਭ ਰਹੇ ॥ gat bharam moh bikaar binase jon aavan sabh rahe | His state of doubt, attachment and sin is erased, and the cycle of reincarnation into the womb is totally ended. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਅਗਨਿ ਸਾਗਰ ਭਏ ਸੀਤਲ ਸਾਧ ਅੰਚਲ ਗਹਿ ਰਹੇ ॥ agan saagar bhe seetal saadh anchal geh rahe | The ocean of fire becomes cool, when one grasps the hem of the robe of the Holy Saint. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਗੋਵਿੰਦ ਗੁਪਾਲ ਦਇਆਲ ਸੰਮ੍ਰਿਥ ਬੋਲਿ ਸਾਧੂ ਹਰਿ ਜੈ ਜਏ ॥ govind gupaal deaal samrith bol saadhoo har jai je | The Lord of the Universe, the Sustainer of the World, the merciful all-powerful Lord - the Holy Saints proclaim the victory of the Lord. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਨਾਨਕ ਨਾਮੁ ਧਿਆਇ ਪੂਰਨ ਸਾਧਸੰਗਿ ਪਾਈ ਪਰਮ ਗਤੇ ॥੨॥ naanak naam dhiaae pooran saadhasang paaee param gate |2| O Nanak, meditating on the Naam, in the perfect Saadh Sangat, the Company of the Holy, I have obtained the supreme status. ||2|| - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਜਹ ਦੇਖਉ ਤਹ ਸੰਗਿ ਏਕੋ ਰਵਿ ਰਹਿਆ ॥ jeh dekhau teh sang eko rav rahiaa | Wherever I look, there I find the One Lord permeating and pervading all. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਘਟ ਘਟ ਵਾਸੀ ਆਪਿ ਵਿਰਲੈ ਕਿਨੈ ਲਹਿਆ ॥ ghatt ghatt vaasee aap viralai kinai lahiaa | In each and every heart, He Himself dwells, but how rare is that person who realizes this. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਜਲਿ ਥਲਿ ਮਹੀਅਲਿ ਪੂਰਿ ਪੂਰਨ ਕੀਟ ਹਸਤਿ ਸਮਾਨਿਆ ॥ jal thal maheeal poor pooran keett hasat samaaniaa | The Lord is permeating and pervading the water, the land and the sky; He is contained in the ant and the elephant. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਆਦਿ ਅੰਤੇ ਮਧਿ ਸੋਈ ਗੁਰ ਪ੍ਰਸਾਦੀ ਜਾਨਿਆ ॥ aad ante madh soee gur prasaadee jaaniaa | In the beginning, in the middle and in the end, He exists. By Guru’s Grace, He is known. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਬ੍ਰਹਮੁ ਪਸਰਿਆ ਬ੍ਰਹਮ ਲੀਲਾ ਗੋਵਿੰਦ ਗੁਣ ਨਿਧਿ ਜਨਿ ਕਹਿਆ ॥ braham pasariaa braham leelaa govind gun nidh jan kahiaa | God created the expanse of the universe, God created the play of the world. His humble servants call Him the Lord of the Universe, the treasure of virtue. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਸਿਮਰਿ ਸੁਆਮੀ ਅੰਤਰਜਾਮੀ ਹਰਿ ਏਕੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਰਵਿ ਰਹਿਆ ॥੩॥ simar suaamee antarajaamee har ek naanak rav rahiaa |3| Meditate in remembrance on the Lord Master, the Searcher of hearts; O Nanak, He is the One, pervading and permeating all. ||3|| - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਦਿਨੁ ਰੈਣਿ ਸੁਹਾਵੜੀ ਆਈ ਸਿਮਰਤ ਨਾਮੁ ਹਰੇ ॥ din rain suhaavarree aaee simarat naam hare | Day and night, become beauteous by remembering the Naam, the Name of the Lord. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
