ਥਾਨ ਮੁਕਾਮ ਜਲੇ ਬਿਜ ਮੰਦਰ ਮੁਛਿ ਮੁਛਿ ਕੁਇਰ ਰੁਲਾਇਆ ॥ thaan mukaam jale bij mandar muchh muchh kueir rulaaeaa | He burned the rest-houses and the ancient temples; he cut the princes limb from limb, and cast them into the dust. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਕੋਈ ਮੁਗਲੁ ਨ ਹੋਆ ਅੰਧਾ ਕਿਨੈ ਨ ਪਰਚਾ ਲਾਇਆ ॥੪॥ koee mugal na hoaa andhaa kinai na parachaa laaeaa |4| None of the Mugals went blind, and no one performed any miracle. ||4|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਮੁਗਲ ਪਠਾਣਾ ਭਈ ਲੜਾਈ ਰਣ ਮਹਿ ਤੇਗ ਵਗਾਈ ॥ mugal patthaanaa bhee larraaee ran meh teg vagaaee | The battle raged between the Mugals and the Pat’haans, and the swords clashed on the battlefield. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਓਨੑੀ ਤੁਪਕ ਤਾਣਿ ਚਲਾਈ ਓਨੑੀ ਹਸਤਿ ਚਿੜਾਈ ॥ onaee tupak taan chalaaee onaee hasat chirraaee | They took aim and fired their guns, and they attacked with their elephants. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਜਿਨੑ ਕੀ ਚੀਰੀ ਦਰਗਹ ਪਾਟੀ ਤਿਨੑਾ ਮਰਣਾ ਭਾਈ ॥੫॥ jina kee cheeree daragah paattee tinaa maranaa bhaaee |5| Those men whose letters were torn in the Lord’s Court, were destined to die, O Siblings of Destiny. ||5|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਇਕ ਹਿੰਦਵਾਣੀ ਅਵਰ ਤੁਰਕਾਣੀ ਭਟਿਆਣੀ ਠਕੁਰਾਣੀ ॥ eik hindavaanee avar turakaanee bhattiaanee tthakuraanee | The Hindu women, the Muslim women, the Bhattis and the Rajputs - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਇਕਨੑਾ ਪੇਰਣ ਸਿਰ ਖੁਰ ਪਾਟੇ ਇਕਨੑਾ ਵਾਸੁ ਮਸਾਣੀ ॥ eikanaa peran sir khur paatte ikanaa vaas masaanee | some had their robes torn away, from head to foot, while others came to dwell in the cremation ground. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਜਿਨੑ ਕੇ ਬੰਕੇ ਘਰੀ ਨ ਆਇਆ ਤਿਨੑ ਕਿਉ ਰੈਣਿ ਵਿਹਾਣੀ ॥੬॥ jina ke banke gharee na aaeaa tina kiau rain vihaanee |6| Their husbands did not return home - how did they pass their night? ||6|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਆਪੇ ਕਰੇ ਕਰਾਏ ਕਰਤਾ ਕਿਸ ਨੋ ਆਖਿ ਸੁਣਾਈਐ ॥ aape kare karaae karataa kis no aakh sunaaeeai | The Creator Himself acts, and causes others to act. Unto whom should we complain? - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਦੁਖੁ ਸੁਖੁ ਤੇਰੈ ਭਾਣੈ ਹੋਵੈ ਕਿਸ ਥੈ ਜਾਇ ਰੂਆਈਐ ॥ dukh sukh terai bhaanai hovai kis thai jaae rooaaeeai | Pleasure and pain come by Your Will; unto whom should we go and cry? - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਹੁਕਮੀ ਹੁਕਮਿ ਚਲਾਏ ਵਿਗਸੈ ਨਾਨਕ ਲਿਖਿਆ ਪਾਈਐ ॥੭॥੧੨॥ hukamee hukam chalaae vigasai naanak likhiaa paaeeai |7|12| The Commander issues His Command, and is pleased. O Nanak, we receive what is written in our destiny. ||7||12|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji

ਜੈਸੇ ਗੋਇਲਿ ਗੋਇਲੀ ਤੈਸੇ ਸੰਸਾਰਾ ॥ jaise goeil goeilee taise sansaaraa | As the shepherd is in the field for only a short time, so is one in the world. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਕੂੜੁ ਕਮਾਵਹਿ ਆਦਮੀ ਬਾਂਧਹਿ ਘਰ ਬਾਰਾ ॥੧॥ koorr kamaaveh aadamee baandheh ghar baaraa |1| Practicing falsehood, they build their homes. ||1|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਜਾਗਹੁ ਜਾਗਹੁ ਸੂਤਿਹੋ ਚਲਿਆ ਵਣਜਾਰਾ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥ jaagahu jaagahu sootiho chaliaa vanajaaraa |1| rahaau | Wake up! Wake up! O sleepers, see that the travelling merchant is leaving. ||1||Pause|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਨੀਤ ਨੀਤ ਘਰ ਬਾਂਧੀਅਹਿ ਜੇ ਰਹਣਾ ਹੋਈ ॥ neet neet ghar baandheeeh je rahanaa hoee | Go ahead and build your houses, if you think you will stay here forever and ever. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਪਿੰਡੁ ਪਵੈ ਜੀਉ ਚਲਸੀ ਜੇ ਜਾਣੈ ਕੋਈ ॥੨॥ pindd pavai jeeo chalasee je jaanai koee |2| The body shall fall, and the soul shall depart; if only they knew this. ||2|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਓਹੀ ਓਹੀ ਕਿਆ ਕਰਹੁ ਹੈ ਹੋਸੀ ਸੋਈ ॥ ohee ohee kiaa karahu hai hosee soee | Why do you cry out and mourn for the dead? The Lord is, and shall always be. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਤੁਮ ਰੋਵਹੁਗੇ ਓਸ ਨੋ ਤੁਮੑ ਕਉ ਕਉਣੁ ਰੋਈ ॥੩॥ tum rovahuge os no tuma kau kaun roee |3| You mourn for that person, but who will mourn for you? ||3|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਧੰਧਾ ਪਿਟਿਹੁ ਭਾਈਹੋ ਤੁਮੑ ਕੂੜੁ ਕਮਾਵਹੁ ॥ dhandhaa pittihu bhaaeeho tuma koorr kamaavahu | You are engrossed in worldly entanglements, O Siblings of Destiny, and you are practicing falsehood. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਓਹੁ ਨ ਸੁਣਈ ਕਤ ਹੀ ਤੁਮੑ ਲੋਕ ਸੁਣਾਵਹੁ ॥੪॥ ohu na sunee kat hee tuma lok sunaavahu |4| The dead person does not hear anything at all; your cries are heard only by other people. ||4|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਜਿਸ ਤੇ ਸੁਤਾ ਨਾਨਕਾ ਜਾਗਾਏ ਸੋਈ ॥ jis te sutaa naanakaa jaagaae soee | Only the Lord, who causes the mortal to sleep, O Nanak, can awaken him again. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਜੇ ਘਰੁ ਬੂਝੈ ਆਪਣਾ ਤਾਂ ਨੀਦ ਨ ਹੋਈ ॥੫॥ je ghar boojhai aapanaa taan need na hoee |5| One who understands his true home, does not sleep. ||5|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਜੇ ਚਲਦਾ ਲੈ ਚਲਿਆ ਕਿਛੁ ਸੰਪੈ ਨਾਲੇ ॥ je chaladaa lai chaliaa kichh sanpai naale | If the departing mortal can take his wealth with him, - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਤਾ ਧਨੁ ਸੰਚਹੁ ਦੇਖਿ ਕੈ ਬੂਝਹੁ ਬੀਚਾਰੇ ॥੬॥ taa dhan sanchahu dekh kai boojhahu beechaare |6| then go ahead and gather wealth yourself. See this, reflect upon it, and understand. ||6|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਵਣਜੁ ਕਰਹੁ ਮਖਸੂਦੁ ਲੈਹੁ ਮਤ ਪਛੋਤਾਵਹੁ ॥ vanaj karahu makhasood laihu mat pachhotaavahu | Make your deals, and obtain the true merchandise, or else you shall regret it later. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਅਉਗਣ ਛੋਡਹੁ ਗੁਣ ਕਰਹੁ ਐਸੇ ਤਤੁ ਪਰਾਵਹੁ ॥੭॥ aaugan chhoddahu gun karahu aise tat paraavahu |7| Abandon your vices, and practice virtue, and you shall obtain the essence of reality. ||7|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਧਰਮੁ ਭੂਮਿ ਸਤੁ ਬੀਜੁ ਕਰਿ ਐਸੀ ਕਿਰਸ ਕਮਾਵਹੁ ॥ dharam bhoom sat beej kar aisee kiras kamaavahu | Plant the seed of Truth in the soil of Dharmic faith, and practice such farming. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਤਾਂ ਵਾਪਾਰੀ ਜਾਣੀਅਹੁ ਲਾਹਾ ਲੈ ਜਾਵਹੁ ॥੮॥ taan vaapaaree jaaneeahu laahaa lai jaavahu |8| Only then will you be known as a merchant, if you take your profits with you. ||8|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਕਰਮੁ ਹੋਵੈ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਮਿਲੈ ਬੂਝੈ ਬੀਚਾਰਾ ॥ karam hovai satigur milai boojhai beechaaraa | If the Lord shows His Mercy, one meets the True Guru; contemplating Him, one comes to understand. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਨਾਮੁ ਵਖਾਣੈ ਸੁਣੇ ਨਾਮੁ ਨਾਮੇ ਬਿਉਹਾਰਾ ॥੯॥ naam vakhaanai sune naam naame biauhaaraa |9| Then, one chants the Naam, hears the Naam, and deals only in the Naam. ||9|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਜਿਉ ਲਾਹਾ ਤੋਟਾ ਤਿਵੈ ਵਾਟ ਚਲਦੀ ਆਈ ॥ jiau laahaa tottaa tivai vaatt chaladee aaee | As is the profit, so is the loss; this is the way of the world. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਜੋ ਤਿਸੁ ਭਾਵੈ ਨਾਨਕਾ ਸਾਈ ਵਡਿਆਈ ॥੧੦॥੧੩॥ jo tis bhaavai naanakaa saaee vaddiaaee |10|13| Whatever pleases His Will, O Nanak, is glory for me. ||10||13|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji

ਚਾਰੇ ਕੁੰਡਾ ਢੂਢੀਆ ਕੋ ਨੀਮੑੀ ਮੈਡਾ ॥ chaare kunddaa dtoodteea ko neemaee maiddaa | I have searched in the four directions, but no one is mine. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਜੇ ਤੁਧੁ ਭਾਵੈ ਸਾਹਿਬਾ ਤੂ ਮੈ ਹਉ ਤੈਡਾ ॥੧॥ je tudh bhaavai saahibaa too mai hau taiddaa |1| If it pleases You, O Lord Master, then You are mine, and I am Yours. ||1|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਦਰੁ ਬੀਭਾ ਮੈ ਨੀਮਿੑ ਕੋ ਕੈ ਕਰੀ ਸਲਾਮੁ ॥ dar beebhaa mai neema ko kai karee salaam | There is no other door for me; where shall I go to worship? - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਹਿਕੋ ਮੈਡਾ ਤੂ ਧਣੀ ਸਾਚਾ ਮੁਖਿ ਨਾਮੁ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥ hiko maiddaa too dhanee saachaa mukh naam |1| rahaau | You are my only Lord; Your True Name is in my mouth. ||1||Pause|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਸਿਧਾ ਸੇਵਨਿ ਸਿਧ ਪੀਰ ਮਾਗਹਿ ਰਿਧਿ ਸਿਧਿ ॥ sidhaa sevan sidh peer maageh ridh sidh | Some serve the Siddhas, the beings of spiritual perfection, and some serve spiritual teachers; they beg for wealth and miraculous powers. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਮੈ ਇਕੁ ਨਾਮੁ ਨ ਵੀਸਰੈ ਸਾਚੇ ਗੁਰ ਬੁਧਿ ॥੨॥ mai ik naam na veesarai saache gur budh |2| May I never forget the Naam, the Name of the One Lord. This is the wisdom of the True Guru. ||2|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
