ਗੁਰ ਪਰਸਾਦੀ ਕਰਮ ਕਮਾਉ ॥ gur parasaadee karam kamaau | By Guru’s Grace, perform good deeds. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਨਾਮੇ ਰਾਤਾ ਹਰਿ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਉ ॥੫॥ naame raataa har gun gaau |5| Imbued with the Naam, sing the Glorious Praises of the Lord. ||5|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਗੁਰ ਸੇਵਾ ਤੇ ਆਪੁ ਪਛਾਤਾ ॥ gur sevaa te aap pachhaataa | Serving the Guru, I have come to understand myself. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਨਾਮੁ ਵਸਿਆ ਸੁਖਦਾਤਾ ॥ amrit naam vasiaa sukhadaataa | The Ambrosial Naam, the Giver of Peace, abides within my mind. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਅਨਦਿਨੁ ਬਾਣੀ ਨਾਮੇ ਰਾਤਾ ॥੬॥ anadin baanee naame raataa |6| Night and day, I am imbued with the Word of the Guru’s Bani, and the Naam. ||6|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਮੇਰਾ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਲਾਏ ਤਾ ਕੋ ਲਾਗੈ ॥ meraa prabh laae taa ko laagai | When my God attaches someone to Him, only then is that person attached. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਹਉਮੈ ਮਾਰੇ ਸਬਦੇ ਜਾਗੈ ॥ haumai maare sabade jaagai | Conquering ego, he remains awake to the Word of the Shabad. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਐਥੈ ਓਥੈ ਸਦਾ ਸੁਖੁ ਆਗੈ ॥੭॥ aithai othai sadaa sukh aagai |7| Here and hereafter, he enjoys lasting peace. ||7|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਮਨੁ ਚੰਚਲੁ ਬਿਧਿ ਨਾਹੀ ਜਾਣੈ ॥ man chanchal bidh naahee jaanai | The fickle mind does not know the way. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਮਨਮੁਖਿ ਮੈਲਾ ਸਬਦੁ ਨ ਪਛਾਣੈ ॥ manamukh mailaa sabad na pachhaanai | The filthy self-willed manmukh does not understand the Shabad. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਨਿਰਮਲੁ ਨਾਮੁ ਵਖਾਣੈ ॥੮॥ guramukh niramal naam vakhaanai |8| The Gurmukh chants the Immaculate Naam. ||8|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਹਰਿ ਜੀਉ ਆਗੈ ਕਰੀ ਅਰਦਾਸਿ ॥ har jeeo aagai karee aradaas | I offer my prayer to the Lord, - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਸਾਧੂ ਜਨ ਸੰਗਤਿ ਹੋਇ ਨਿਵਾਸੁ ॥ saadhoo jan sangat hoe nivaas | that I might dwell in the Saadh Sangat, the Company of the Holy. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਕਿਲਵਿਖ ਦੁਖ ਕਾਟੇ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਪ੍ਰਗਾਸੁ ॥੯॥ kilavikh dukh kaatte har naam pragaas |9| There, sins and sufferings are erased, and one is illumined with the Lord’s Name. ||9|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਕਰਿ ਬੀਚਾਰੁ ਆਚਾਰੁ ਪਰਾਤਾ ॥ kar beechaar aachaar paraataa | In reflective meditation, I have come to love good conduct. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਬਚਨੀ ਏਕੋ ਜਾਤਾ ॥ satigur bachanee eko jaataa | Through the Word of the True Guru, I recognize the One Lord. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਨਾਨਕ ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮਿ ਮਨੁ ਰਾਤਾ ॥੧੦॥੭॥ naanak raam naam man raataa |10|7| O Nanak, my mind is imbued with the Lord’s Name. ||10||7|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji

ਮਨੁ ਮੈਗਲੁ ਸਾਕਤੁ ਦੇਵਾਨਾ ॥ man maigal saakat devaanaa | The mind of the faithless cynic is like a crazy elephant. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਬਨ ਖੰਡਿ ਮਾਇਆ ਮੋਹਿ ਹੈਰਾਨਾ ॥ ban khandd maaeaa mohi hairaanaa | It wanders around the forest, distracted by attachment to Maya. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਇਤ ਉਤ ਜਾਹਿ ਕਾਲ ਕੇ ਚਾਪੇ ॥ eit ut jaeh kaal ke chaape | It goes here and there, hounded by death. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਖੋਜਿ ਲਹੈ ਘਰੁ ਆਪੇ ॥੧॥ guramukh khoj lahai ghar aape |1| The Gurmukh seeks, and finds his own home. ||1|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਬਿਨੁ ਗੁਰਸਬਦੈ ਮਨੁ ਨਹੀ ਠਉਰਾ ॥ bin gurasabadai man nahee tthauraa | Without the Word of the Guru’s Shabad, the mind finds no place of rest. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਸਿਮਰਹੁ ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮੁ ਅਤਿ ਨਿਰਮਲੁ ਅਵਰ ਤਿਆਗਹੁ ਹਉਮੈ ਕਉਰਾ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥ simarahu raam naam at niramal avar tiaagahu haumai kauraa |1| rahaau | Remember in meditation the Lord’s Name, the most pure and sublime; renounce your bitter egotism. ||1||Pause|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਇਹੁ ਮਨੁ ਮੁਗਧੁ ਕਹਹੁ ਕਿਉ ਰਹਸੀ ॥ eihu man mugadh kahahu kiau rahasee | Tell me, how can this stupid mind be rescued? - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਬਿਨੁ ਸਮਝੇ ਜਮ ਕਾ ਦੁਖੁ ਸਹਸੀ ॥ bin samajhe jam kaa dukh sahasee | Without understanding, it shall suffer the pains of death. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਆਪੇ ਬਖਸੇ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਮੇਲੈ ॥ aape bakhase satigur melai | The Lord Himself forgives us, and unites us with the True Guru. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਕਾਲੁ ਕੰਟਕੁ ਮਾਰੇ ਸਚੁ ਪੇਲੈ ॥੨॥ kaal kanttak maare sach pelai |2| The True Lord conquers and overcomes the tortures of death. ||2|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਇਹੁ ਮਨੁ ਕਰਮਾ ਇਹੁ ਮਨੁ ਧਰਮਾ ॥ eihu man karamaa ihu man dharamaa | This mind commits its deeds of karma, and this mind follows the Dharma. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਇਹੁ ਮਨੁ ਪੰਚ ਤਤੁ ਤੇ ਜਨਮਾ ॥ eihu man panch tat te janamaa | This mind is born of the five elements. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਸਾਕਤੁ ਲੋਭੀ ਇਹੁ ਮਨੁ ਮੂੜਾ ॥ saakat lobhee ihu man moorraa | This foolish mind is perverted and greedy. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਜਪੈ ਮਨੁ ਰੂੜਾ ॥੩॥ guramukh naam japai man roorraa |3| Chanting the Naam, the mind of the Gurmukh becomes beautiful. ||3|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਮਨੁ ਅਸਥਾਨੇ ਸੋਈ ॥ guramukh man asathaane soee | The mind of the Gurmukh finds the Lord’s home. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਤ੍ਰਿਭਵਣਿ ਸੋਝੀ ਹੋਈ ॥ guramukh tribhavan sojhee hoee | The Gurmukh comes to know the three worlds. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਇਹੁ ਮਨੁ ਜੋਗੀ ਭੋਗੀ ਤਪੁ ਤਾਪੈ ॥ eihu man jogee bhogee tap taapai | This mind is a Yogi, an enjoyer, a practicer of austerities. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਚੀਨੈੑ ਹਰਿ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਆਪੈ ॥੪॥ guramukh cheenai har prabh aapai |4| The Gurmukh understands the Lord God Himself. ||4|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਮਨੁ ਬੈਰਾਗੀ ਹਉਮੈ ਤਿਆਗੀ ॥ man bairaagee haumai tiaagee | This mind is a detached renunciate, forsaking egotism. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਘਟਿ ਘਟਿ ਮਨਸਾ ਦੁਬਿਧਾ ਲਾਗੀ ॥ ghatt ghatt manasaa dubidhaa laagee | Desire and duality afflict each and every heart. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਰਾਮ ਰਸਾਇਣੁ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਚਾਖੈ ॥ raam rasaaein guramukh chaakhai | The Gurmukh drinks in the Lord’s sublime essence; - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਦਰਿ ਘਰਿ ਮਹਲੀ ਹਰਿ ਪਤਿ ਰਾਖੈ ॥੫॥ dar ghar mahalee har pat raakhai |5| at His Door, in the Mansion of the Lord’s Presence, He preserves his honor. ||5|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਇਹੁ ਮਨੁ ਰਾਜਾ ਸੂਰ ਸੰਗ੍ਰਾਮਿ ॥ eihu man raajaa soor sangraam | This mind is the king, the hero of cosmic battles. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਇਹੁ ਮਨੁ ਨਿਰਭਉ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਨਾਮਿ ॥ eihu man nirbhau guramukh naam | The mind of the Gurmukh becomes fearless through the Naam. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਮਾਰੇ ਪੰਚ ਅਪੁਨੈ ਵਸਿ ਕੀਏ ॥ maare panch apunai vas kee | Overpowering and subduing the five passions, - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਹਉਮੈ ਗ੍ਰਾਸਿ ਇਕਤੁ ਥਾਇ ਕੀਏ ॥੬॥ haumai graas ikat thaae kee |6| holding ego in its grip, it confines them to one place. ||6|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਰਾਗ ਸੁਆਦ ਅਨ ਤਿਆਗੇ ॥ guramukh raag suaad an tiaage | The Gurmukh renounces other songs and tastes. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਇਹੁ ਮਨੁ ਭਗਤੀ ਜਾਗੇ ॥ guramukh ihu man bhagatee jaage | The mind of the Gurmukh is awakened to devotion. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਅਨਹਦ ਸੁਣਿ ਮਾਨਿਆ ਸਬਦੁ ਵੀਚਾਰੀ ॥ anahad sun maaniaa sabad veechaaree | Hearing the unstruck music of the sound current, this mind contemplates the Shabad, and accepts it. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਆਤਮੁ ਚੀਨਿੑ ਭਏ ਨਿਰੰਕਾਰੀ ॥੭॥ aatam cheena bhe nirankaaree |7| Understanding itself, this soul becomes attuned to the Formless Lord. ||7|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਇਹੁ ਮਨੁ ਨਿਰਮਲੁ ਦਰਿ ਘਰਿ ਸੋਈ ॥ eihu man niramal dar ghar soee | This mind becomes immaculately pure, in the Court and the Home of the Lord. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਭਗਤਿ ਭਾਉ ਧੁਨਿ ਹੋਈ ॥ guramukh bhagat bhaau dhun hoee | The Gurmukh shows his love through loving devotional worship. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਅਹਿਨਿਸਿ ਹਰਿ ਜਸੁ ਗੁਰ ਪਰਸਾਦਿ ॥ ahinis har jas gur parasaad | Night and day, by Guru’s Grace, sing the Lord’s Praises. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਘਟਿ ਘਟਿ ਸੋ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਆਦਿ ਜੁਗਾਦਿ ॥੮॥ ghatt ghatt so prabh aad jugaad |8| God dwells in each and every heart, since the very beginning of time, and throughout the ages. ||8|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਰਾਮ ਰਸਾਇਣਿ ਇਹੁ ਮਨੁ ਮਾਤਾ ॥ raam rasaaein ihu man maataa | This mind is intoxicated with the sublime essence of the Lord; - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਸਰਬ ਰਸਾਇਣੁ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਜਾਤਾ ॥ sarab rasaaein guramukh jaataa | The Gurmukh realizes the essence of totality. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਭਗਤਿ ਹੇਤੁ ਗੁਰ ਚਰਣ ਨਿਵਾਸਾ ॥ bhagat het gur charan nivaasaa | For the sake of devotional worship, he dwells at the Guru’s Feet. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਨਾਨਕ ਹਰਿ ਜਨ ਕੇ ਦਾਸਨਿ ਦਾਸਾ ॥੯॥੮॥ naanak har jan ke daasan daasaa |9|8| Nanak is the humble servant of the slave of the Lord’s slaves. ||9||8|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
