ੴ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਪ੍ਰਸਾਦਿ ॥ ik oankaar satigur prasaad | One Universal Creator God. By The Grace Of The True Guru: - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਆਸਾ ਘਰੁ ੩ ਮਹਲਾ ੧ ॥ aasaa ghar 3 mahalaa 1 | Aasaa, Third House, First Mehl: - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਲਖ ਲਸਕਰ ਲਖ ਵਾਜੇ ਨੇਜੇ ਲਖ ਉਠਿ ਕਰਹਿ ਸਲਾਮੁ ॥ lakh lasakar lakh vaaje neje lakh utth kareh salaam | You may have thousands of armies, thousands of marching bands and lances, and thousands of men to rise and salute you. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਲਖਾ ਉਪਰਿ ਫੁਰਮਾਇਸਿ ਤੇਰੀ ਲਖ ਉਠਿ ਰਾਖਹਿ ਮਾਨੁ ॥ lakhaa upar furamaaeis teree lakh utth raakheh maan | Your rule may extend over thousands of miles, and thousands of men may rise to honor you. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਜਾਂ ਪਤਿ ਲੇਖੈ ਨਾ ਪਵੈ ਤਾਂ ਸਭਿ ਨਿਰਾਫਲ ਕਾਮ ॥੧॥ jaan pat lekhai naa pavai taan sabh niraafal kaam |1| But, if your honor is of no account to the Lord, then all of your ostentatious show is useless. ||1|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਹਰਿ ਕੇ ਨਾਮ ਬਿਨਾ ਜਗੁ ਧੰਧਾ ॥ har ke naam binaa jag dhandhaa | Without the Name of the Lord, the world is in turmoil. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਜੇ ਬਹੁਤਾ ਸਮਝਾਈਐ ਭੋਲਾ ਭੀ ਸੋ ਅੰਧੋ ਅੰਧਾ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥ je bahutaa samajhaaeeai bholaa bhee so andho andhaa |1| rahaau | Even though the fool may be taught again and again, he remains the blindest of the blind. ||1||Pause|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਲਖ ਖਟੀਅਹਿ ਲਖ ਸੰਜੀਅਹਿ ਖਾਜਹਿ ਲਖ ਆਵਹਿ ਲਖ ਜਾਹਿ ॥ lakh khatteeeh lakh sanjeeeh khaajeh lakh aaveh lakh jaeh | You may earn thousands, collect thousands, and spend thousands of dollars; thousands may come, and thousands may go. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਜਾਂ ਪਤਿ ਲੇਖੈ ਨਾ ਪਵੈ ਤਾਂ ਜੀਅ ਕਿਥੈ ਫਿਰਿ ਪਾਹਿ ॥੨॥ jaan pat lekhai naa pavai taan jeea kithai fir paeh |2| But, if your honor is of no account to the Lord, then where will you go to find a safe haven? ||2|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਲਖ ਸਾਸਤ ਸਮਝਾਵਣੀ ਲਖ ਪੰਡਿਤ ਪੜਹਿ ਪੁਰਾਣ ॥ lakh saasat samajhaavanee lakh panddit parreh puraan | Thousands of Shaastras may be explained to the mortal, and thousands of Pandits may read the Puraanas to him; - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਜਾਂ ਪਤਿ ਲੇਖੈ ਨਾ ਪਵੈ ਤਾਂ ਸਭੇ ਕੁਪਰਵਾਣ ॥੩॥ jaan pat lekhai naa pavai taan sabhe kuparavaan |3| but, if his honor is of no account to the Lord, then all of this is unacceptable. ||3|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਸਚ ਨਾਮਿ ਪਤਿ ਊਪਜੈ ਕਰਮਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਕਰਤਾਰੁ ॥ sach naam pat aoopajai karam naam karataar | Honor comes from the True Name, the Name of the Merciful Creator. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਅਹਿਨਿਸਿ ਹਿਰਦੈ ਜੇ ਵਸੈ ਨਾਨਕ ਨਦਰੀ ਪਾਰੁ ॥੪॥੧॥੩੧॥ ahinis hiradai je vasai naanak nadaree paar |4|1|31| If it abides in the heart, day and night, O Nanak, then the mortal shall swim across, by His Grace. ||4||1||31|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji

ਦੀਵਾ ਮੇਰਾ ਏਕੁ ਨਾਮੁ ਦੁਖੁ ਵਿਚਿ ਪਾਇਆ ਤੇਲੁ ॥ deevaa meraa ek naam dukh vich paaeaa tel | The One Name is my lamp; I have put the oil of suffering into it. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਉਨਿ ਚਾਨਣਿ ਓਹੁ ਸੋਖਿਆ ਚੂਕਾ ਜਮ ਸਿਉ ਮੇਲੁ ॥੧॥ aun chaanan ohu sokhiaa chookaa jam siau mel |1| Its flame has dried up this oil, and I have escaped my meeting with the Messenger of Death. ||1|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਲੋਕਾ ਮਤ ਕੋ ਫਕੜਿ ਪਾਇ ॥ lokaa mat ko fakarr paae | O people, do not make fun of me. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਲਖ ਮੜਿਆ ਕਰਿ ਏਕਠੇ ਏਕ ਰਤੀ ਲੇ ਭਾਹਿ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥ lakh marriaa kar ekatthe ek ratee le bhaeh |1| rahaau | Thousands of wooden logs, piled up together, need only a tiny flame to burn. ||1||Pause|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਪਿੰਡੁ ਪਤਲਿ ਮੇਰੀ ਕੇਸਉ ਕਿਰਿਆ ਸਚੁ ਨਾਮੁ ਕਰਤਾਰੁ ॥ pindd patal meree kesau kiriaa sach naam karataar | The Lord is my festive dish, of rice balls on leafy plates; the True Name of the Creator Lord is my funeral ceremony. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਐਥੈ ਓਥੈ ਆਗੈ ਪਾਛੈ ਏਹੁ ਮੇਰਾ ਆਧਾਰੁ ॥੨॥ aithai othai aagai paachhai ehu meraa aadhaar |2| Here and hereafter, in the past and in the future, this is my support. ||2|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਗੰਗ ਬਨਾਰਸਿ ਸਿਫਤਿ ਤੁਮਾਰੀ ਨਾਵੈ ਆਤਮ ਰਾਉ ॥ gang banaaras sifat tumaaree naavai aatam raau | The Lord’s Praise is my River Ganges and my city of Benares; my soul takes its sacred cleansing bath there. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਸਚਾ ਨਾਵਣੁ ਤਾਂ ਥੀਐ ਜਾਂ ਅਹਿਨਿਸਿ ਲਾਗੈ ਭਾਉ ॥੩॥ sachaa naavan taan theeai jaan ahinis laagai bhaau |3| That becomes my true cleansing bath, if night and day, I enshrine love for You. ||3|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਇਕ ਲੋਕੀ ਹੋਰੁ ਛਮਿਛਰੀ ਬ੍ਰਾਹਮਣੁ ਵਟਿ ਪਿੰਡੁ ਖਾਇ ॥ eik lokee hor chhamichharee braahaman vatt pindd khaae | The rice balls are offered to the gods and the dead ancestors, but it is the Brahmins who eat them! - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਨਾਨਕ ਪਿੰਡੁ ਬਖਸੀਸ ਕਾ ਕਬਹੂੰ ਨਿਖੂਟਸਿ ਨਾਹਿ ॥੪॥੨॥੩੨॥ naanak pindd bakhasees kaa kabahoon nikhoottas naeh |4|2|32| O Nanak, the rice balls of the Lord are a gift which is never exhausted. ||4||2||32|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji

ਦੇਵਤਿਆ ਦਰਸਨ ਕੈ ਤਾਈ ਦੂਖ ਭੂਖ ਤੀਰਥ ਕੀਏ ॥ devatiaa darasan kai taaee dookh bhookh teerath kee | The Gods, yearning for the Blessed Vision of the Lord’s Darshan, suffered through pain and hunger at the sacred shrines. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਜੋਗੀ ਜਤੀ ਜੁਗਤਿ ਮਹਿ ਰਹਤੇ ਕਰਿ ਕਰਿ ਭਗਵੇ ਭੇਖ ਭਏ ॥੧॥ jogee jatee jugat meh rahate kar kar bhagave bhekh bhe |1| The yogis and the celibates live their disciplined lifestyle, while others wear saffron robes and become hermits. ||1|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਤਉ ਕਾਰਣਿ ਸਾਹਿਬਾ ਰੰਗਿ ਰਤੇ ॥ tau kaaran saahibaa rang rate | For Your sake, O Lord Master, they are imbued with love. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਤੇਰੇ ਨਾਮ ਅਨੇਕਾ ਰੂਪ ਅਨੰਤਾ ਕਹਣੁ ਨ ਜਾਹੀ ਤੇਰੇ ਗੁਣ ਕੇਤੇ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥ tere naam anekaa roop anantaa kehan na jaahee tere gun kete |1| rahaau | Your Names are so many, and Your Forms are endless. No one can tell how may Glorious Virtues You have. ||1||Pause|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਦਰ ਘਰ ਮਹਲਾ ਹਸਤੀ ਘੋੜੇ ਛੋਡਿ ਵਿਲਾਇਤਿ ਦੇਸ ਗਏ ॥ dar ghar mahalaa hasatee ghorre chhodd vilaaeit des ge | Leaving behind hearth and home, palaces, elephants, horses and native lands, mortals have journeyed to foreign lands. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਪੀਰ ਪੇਕਾਂਬਰ ਸਾਲਿਕ ਸਾਦਿਕ ਛੋਡੀ ਦੁਨੀਆ ਥਾਇ ਪਏ ॥੨॥ peer pekaanbar saalik saadik chhoddee duneea thaae pe |2| The spiritual leaders, prophets, seers and men of faith renounced the world, and became acceptable. ||2|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਸਾਦ ਸਹਜ ਸੁਖ ਰਸ ਕਸ ਤਜੀਅਲੇ ਕਾਪੜ ਛੋਡੇ ਚਮੜ ਲੀਏ ॥ saad sehaj sukh ras kas tajeeale kaaparr chhodde chamarr lee | Renouncing tasty delicacies, comfort, happiness and pleasures, some have abandoned their clothes and now wear skins. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਦੁਖੀਏ ਦਰਦਵੰਦ ਦਰਿ ਤੇਰੈ ਨਾਮਿ ਰਤੇ ਦਰਵੇਸ ਭਏ ॥੩॥ dukhee daradavand dar terai naam rate daraves bhe |3| Those who suffer in pain, imbued with Your Name, have become beggars at Your Door. ||3|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਖਲੜੀ ਖਪਰੀ ਲਕੜੀ ਚਮੜੀ ਸਿਖਾ ਸੂਤੁ ਧੋਤੀ ਕੀਨੑੀ ॥ khalarree khaparee lakarree chamarree sikhaa soot dhotee keenaee | Some wear skins, and carry begging bowls, bearing wooden staffs, and sitting on deer skins. Others raise their hair in tufts and wear sacred threads and loin-cloths. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਤੂੰ ਸਾਹਿਬੁ ਹਉ ਸਾਂਗੀ ਤੇਰਾ ਪ੍ਰਣਵੈ ਨਾਨਕੁ ਜਾਤਿ ਕੈਸੀ ॥੪॥੧॥੩੩॥ toon saahib hau saangee teraa pranavai naanak jaat kaisee |4|1|33| You are the Lord Master, I am just Your puppet. Prays Nanak, what is my social status to be? ||4||1||33|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
