ਐਸਾ ਗੁਰਮਤਿ ਰਮਤੁ ਸਰੀਰਾ ॥ aisaa guramat ramat sareeraa | Through the Guru’s Teachings, realize that He is pervading in all bodies; - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਹਰਿ ਭਜੁ ਮੇਰੇ ਮਨ ਗਹਿਰ ਗੰਭੀਰਾ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥ har bhaj mere man gahir ganbheeraa |1| rahaau | O my soul, vibrate on the Profound, Unfathomable Lord. ||1||Pause|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਅਨਤ ਤਰੰਗ ਭਗਤਿ ਹਰਿ ਰੰਗਾ ॥ anat tarang bhagat har rangaa | Loving devotion to the Lord brings endless waves of joy and delight. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਅਨਦਿਨੁ ਸੂਚੇ ਹਰਿ ਗੁਣ ਸੰਗਾ ॥ anadin sooche har gun sangaa | One who dwells with the Glorious Praises of the Lord, night and day, is sanctified. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਮਿਥਿਆ ਜਨਮੁ ਸਾਕਤ ਸੰਸਾਰਾ ॥ mithiaa janam saakat sansaaraa | The birth into the world of the faithless cynic is totally useless. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਰਾਮ ਭਗਤਿ ਜਨੁ ਰਹੈ ਨਿਰਾਰਾ ॥੨॥ raam bhagat jan rahai niraaraa |2| The humble devotee of the Lord remains unattached. ||2|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਸੂਚੀ ਕਾਇਆ ਹਰਿ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਇਆ ॥ soochee kaaeaa har gun gaaeaa | The body which sings the Glorious Praises of the Lord is sanctified. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਆਤਮੁ ਚੀਨਿ ਰਹੈ ਲਿਵ ਲਾਇਆ ॥ aatam cheen rahai liv laaeaa | The soul remains conscious of the Lord, absorbed in His Love. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਆਦਿ ਅਪਾਰੁ ਅਪਰੰਪਰੁ ਹੀਰਾ ॥ aad apaar aparanpar heeraa | The Lord is the Infinite Primal Being, beyond the beyond, the priceless jewel. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਲਾਲਿ ਰਤਾ ਮੇਰਾ ਮਨੁ ਧੀਰਾ ॥੩॥ laal rataa meraa man dheeraa |3| My mind is totally content, imbued with my Beloved. ||3|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਕਥਨੀ ਕਹਹਿ ਕਹਹਿ ਸੇ ਮੂਏ ॥ kathanee kaheh kaheh se mooe | Those who speak and babble on and on, are truly dead. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਸੋ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਦੂਰਿ ਨਾਹੀ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਤੂੰ ਹੈ ॥ so prabh door naahee prabh toon hai | God is not far away - O God, You are right here. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਸਭੁ ਜਗੁ ਦੇਖਿਆ ਮਾਇਆ ਛਾਇਆ ॥ sabh jag dekhiaa maaeaa chhaaeaa | I have seen that the whole world is engrossed in Maya. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਨਾਨਕ ਗੁਰਮਤਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਧਿਆਇਆ ॥੪॥੧੭॥ naanak guramat naam dhiaaeaa |4|17| O Nanak, through the Guru’s Teachings, I meditate on the Naam, the Name of the Lord. ||4||17|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਆਸਾ ਮਹਲਾ ੧ ਤਿਤੁਕਾ ॥ aasaa mahalaa 1 titukaa | Aasaa, First Mehl, Thi-Thukay: - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਕੋਈ ਭੀਖਕੁ ਭੀਖਿਆ ਖਾਇ ॥ koee bheekhak bheekhiaa khaae | One is a beggar, living on charity; - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਕੋਈ ਰਾਜਾ ਰਹਿਆ ਸਮਾਇ ॥ koee raajaa rahiaa samaae | another is a king, absorbed in himself. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਕਿਸ ਹੀ ਮਾਨੁ ਕਿਸੈ ਅਪਮਾਨੁ ॥ kis hee maan kisai apamaan | One receives honor, and another dishonor. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਢਾਹਿ ਉਸਾਰੇ ਧਰੇ ਧਿਆਨੁ ॥ dtaeh usaare dhare dhiaan | The Lord destroys and creates; He is enshrined in His meditation. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਤੁਝ ਤੇ ਵਡਾ ਨਾਹੀ ਕੋਇ ॥ tujh te vaddaa naahee koe | There is no other as great as You. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਕਿਸੁ ਵੇਖਾਲੀ ਚੰਗਾ ਹੋਇ ॥੧॥ kis vekhaalee changaa hoe |1| So whom should I present to You? Who is good enough? ||1|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਮੈ ਤਾਂ ਨਾਮੁ ਤੇਰਾ ਆਧਾਰੁ ॥ mai taan naam teraa aadhaar | The Naam, the Name of the Lord, is my only Support. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਤੂੰ ਦਾਤਾ ਕਰਣਹਾਰੁ ਕਰਤਾਰੁ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥ toon daataa karanahaar karataar |1| rahaau | You are the Great Giver, the Doer, the Creator. ||1||Pause|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਵਾਟ ਨ ਪਾਵਉ ਵੀਗਾ ਜਾਉ ॥ vaatt na paavau veegaa jaau | I have not walked on Your Path; I have followed the crooked path. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਦਰਗਹ ਬੈਸਣ ਨਾਹੀ ਥਾਉ ॥ daragah baisan naahee thaau | In the Court of the Lord, I find no place to sit. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਮਨ ਕਾ ਅੰਧੁਲਾ ਮਾਇਆ ਕਾ ਬੰਧੁ ॥ man kaa andhulaa maaeaa kaa bandh | I am mentally blind, in the bondage of Maya. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਖੀਨ ਖਰਾਬੁ ਹੋਵੈ ਨਿਤ ਕੰਧੁ ॥ kheen kharaab hovai nit kandh | The wall of my body is breaking down, wearing away, growing weaker. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਖਾਣ ਜੀਵਣ ਕੀ ਬਹੁਤੀ ਆਸ ॥ khaan jeevan kee bahutee aas | You have such high hopes of eating and living - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਲੇਖੈ ਤੇਰੈ ਸਾਸ ਗਿਰਾਸ ॥੨॥ lekhai terai saas giraas |2|
- your breaths and morsels of food are already counted! ||2|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਅਹਿਨਿਸਿ ਅੰਧੁਲੇ ਦੀਪਕੁ ਦੇਇ ॥ ahinis andhule deepak dee | Night and day they are blind - please, bless them with Your Light. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਭਉਜਲ ਡੂਬਤ ਚਿੰਤ ਕਰੇਇ ॥ bhaujal ddoobat chint karee | They are drowning in the terrifying world-ocean, crying out in pain. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਕਹਹਿ ਸੁਣਹਿ ਜੋ ਮਾਨਹਿ ਨਾਉ ॥ kaheh suneh jo maaneh naau | I am a sacrifice to those who chant, - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਹਉ ਬਲਿਹਾਰੈ ਤਾ ਕੈ ਜਾਉ ॥ hau balihaarai taa kai jaau | Hear and believe in the Name. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਨਾਨਕੁ ਏਕ ਕਹੈ ਅਰਦਾਸਿ ॥ naanak ek kahai aradaas | Nanak utters this one prayer; - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਜੀਉ ਪਿੰਡੁ ਸਭੁ ਤੇਰੈ ਪਾਸਿ ॥੩॥ jeeo pindd sabh terai paas |3| soul and body, all belong to You, Lord. ||3|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਜਾਂ ਤੂੰ ਦੇਹਿ ਜਪੀ ਤੇਰਾ ਨਾਉ ॥ jaan toon dehi japee teraa naau | When You bless me, I chant Your Name. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਦਰਗਹ ਬੈਸਣ ਹੋਵੈ ਥਾਉ ॥ daragah baisan hovai thaau | Thus I find my seat in the Court of the Lord. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਜਾਂ ਤੁਧੁ ਭਾਵੈ ਤਾ ਦੁਰਮਤਿ ਜਾਇ ॥ jaan tudh bhaavai taa duramat jaae | When it pleases You, evil-mindedness departs, - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਗਿਆਨ ਰਤਨੁ ਮਨਿ ਵਸੈ ਆਇ ॥ giaan ratan man vasai aae | and the jewel of spiritual wisdom comes to dwell in the mind. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਨਦਰਿ ਕਰੇ ਤਾ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਮਿਲੈ ॥ nadar kare taa satigur milai | When the Lord bestows His Glance of Grace, then one comes to meet the True Guru. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਪ੍ਰਣਵਤਿ ਨਾਨਕੁ ਭਵਜਲੁ ਤਰੈ ॥੪॥੧੮॥ pranavat naanak bhavajal tarai |4|18| Prays Nanak, carry us across the terrifying world-ocean. ||4||18|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji

ਦੁਧ ਬਿਨੁ ਧੇਨੁ ਪੰਖ ਬਿਨੁ ਪੰਖੀ ਜਲ ਬਿਨੁ ਉਤਭੁਜ ਕਾਮਿ ਨਾਹੀ ॥ dudh bin dhen pankh bin pankhee jal bin utabhuj kaam naahee | A cow without milk; a bird without wings; a garden without water - totally useless! - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਕਿਆ ਸੁਲਤਾਨੁ ਸਲਾਮ ਵਿਹੂਣਾ ਅੰਧੀ ਕੋਠੀ ਤੇਰਾ ਨਾਮੁ ਨਾਹੀ ॥੧॥ kiaa sulataan salaam vihoonaa andhee kotthee teraa naam naahee |1| What is an emperor, without respect? The chamber of the soul is so dark, without the Name of the Lord. ||1|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਕੀ ਵਿਸਰਹਿ ਦੁਖੁ ਬਹੁਤਾ ਲਾਗੈ ॥ kee visareh dukh bahutaa laagai | How could I ever forget You? It would be so painful! - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਦੁਖੁ ਲਾਗੈ ਤੂੰ ਵਿਸਰੁ ਨਾਹੀ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥ dukh laagai toon visar naahee |1| rahaau | I would suffer such pain - no, I shall not forget You! ||1||Pause|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਅਖੀ ਅੰਧੁ ਜੀਭ ਰਸੁ ਨਾਹੀ ਕੰਨੀ ਪਵਣੁ ਨ ਵਾਜੈ ॥ akhee andh jeebh ras naahee kanee pavan na vaajai | The eyes grow blind, the tongue does not taste, and the ears do not hear any sound. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਚਰਣੀ ਚਲੈ ਪਜੂਤਾ ਆਗੈ ਵਿਣੁ ਸੇਵਾ ਫਲ ਲਾਗੇ ॥੨॥ charanee chalai pajootaa aagai vin sevaa fal laage |2| He walks on his feet only when supported by someone else; without serving the Lord, such are the fruits of life. ||2|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਅਖਰ ਬਿਰਖ ਬਾਗ ਭੁਇ ਚੋਖੀ ਸਿੰਚਿਤ ਭਾਉ ਕਰੇਹੀ ॥ akhar birakh baag bhue chokhee sinchit bhaau karehee | The Word is the tree; the garden of the heart is the farm; tend it, and irrigate it with the Lord’s Love. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਸਭਨਾ ਫਲੁ ਲਾਗੈ ਨਾਮੁ ਏਕੋ ਬਿਨੁ ਕਰਮਾ ਕੈਸੇ ਲੇਹੀ ॥੩॥ sabhanaa fal laagai naam eko bin karamaa kaise lehee |3| All these trees bear the fruit of the Name of the One Lord; but without the karma of good actions, how can anyone obtain it? ||3|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਜੇਤੇ ਜੀਅ ਤੇਤੇ ਸਭਿ ਤੇਰੇ ਵਿਣੁ ਸੇਵਾ ਫਲੁ ਕਿਸੈ ਨਾਹੀ ॥ jete jeea tete sabh tere vin sevaa fal kisai naahee | As many living beings are there are, they are all Yours. Without selfless service, no one obtains any reward. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਦੁਖੁ ਸੁਖੁ ਭਾਣਾ ਤੇਰਾ ਹੋਵੈ ਵਿਣੁ ਨਾਵੈ ਜੀਉ ਰਹੈ ਨਾਹੀ ॥੪॥ dukh sukh bhaanaa teraa hovai vin naavai jeeo rahai naahee |4| Pain and pleasure come by Your Will; without the Name, the soul does not even exist. ||4|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਮਤਿ ਵਿਚਿ ਮਰਣੁ ਜੀਵਣੁ ਹੋਰੁ ਕੈਸਾ ਜਾ ਜੀਵਾ ਤਾਂ ਜੁਗਤਿ ਨਾਹੀ ॥ mat vich maran jeevan hor kaisaa jaa jeevaa taan jugat naahee | To die in the Teachings is to live. Otherwise, what is life? That is not the way. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
