ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਸੇਵਿ ਪਾਏ ਨਿਜ ਥਾਉ ॥੧॥ satigur sev paae nij thaau |1| Serving the True Guru, one finds one’s own place within the self. ||1|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਮਨ ਚੂਰੇ ਖਟੁ ਦਰਸਨ ਜਾਣੁ ॥ man choore khatt darasan jaan | To conquer the mind is the knowledge of the six Shaastras. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਸਰਬ ਜੋਤਿ ਪੂਰਨ ਭਗਵਾਨੁ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥ sarab jot pooran bhagavaan |1| rahaau | The Divine Light of the Lord God is perfectly pervading. ||1||Pause|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਅਧਿਕ ਤਿਆਸ ਭੇਖ ਬਹੁ ਕਰੈ ॥ adhik tiaas bhekh bahu karai | Excessive thirst for Maya makes people wear all sorts of religious robes. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਦੁਖੁ ਬਿਖਿਆ ਸੁਖੁ ਤਨਿ ਪਰਹਰੈ ॥ dukh bikhiaa sukh tan paraharai | The pain of corruption destroys the body’s peace. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਕਾਮੁ ਕ੍ਰੋਧੁ ਅੰਤਰਿ ਧਨੁ ਹਿਰੈ ॥ kaam krodh antar dhan hirai | Sexual desire and anger steal the wealth of the self within. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਦੁਬਿਧਾ ਛੋਡਿ ਨਾਮਿ ਨਿਸਤਰੈ ॥੨॥ dubidhaa chhodd naam nisatarai |2| But by abandoning duality, one is emancipated through the Naam, the Name of the Lord. ||2|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਸਿਫਤਿ ਸਲਾਹਣੁ ਸਹਜ ਅਨੰਦ ॥ sifat salaahan sehaj anand | In the Lord’s Praise and adoration is intuitive peace, poise and bliss. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਸਖਾ ਸੈਨੁ ਪ੍ਰੇਮੁ ਗੋਬਿੰਦ ॥ sakhaa sain prem gobind | The Love of the Lord God is one’s family and friends. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਆਪੇ ਕਰੇ ਆਪੇ ਬਖਸਿੰਦੁ ॥ aape kare aape bakhasind | He Himself is the Doer, and He Himself is the Forgiver. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਤਨੁ ਮਨੁ ਹਰਿ ਪਹਿ ਆਗੈ ਜਿੰਦੁ ॥੩॥ tan man har peh aagai jind |3| My body and mind belong to the Lord; my life is at His Command. ||3|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਝੂਠ ਵਿਕਾਰ ਮਹਾ ਦੁਖੁ ਦੇਹ ॥ jhootth vikaar mahaa dukh deh | Falsehood and corruption cause terrible suffering. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਭੇਖ ਵਰਨ ਦੀਸਹਿ ਸਭਿ ਖੇਹ ॥ bhekh varan deeseh sabh kheh | All the religious robes and social classes look just like dust. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਜੋ ਉਪਜੈ ਸੋ ਆਵੈ ਜਾਇ ॥ jo upajai so aavai jaae | Whoever is born, continues to come and go. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਨਾਨਕ ਅਸਥਿਰੁ ਨਾਮੁ ਰਜਾਇ ॥੪॥੧੧॥ naanak asathir naam rajaae |4|11| O Nanak, only the Naam and the Lord’s Command are eternal and everlasting. ||4||11|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji

ਏਕੋ ਸਰਵਰੁ ਕਮਲ ਅਨੂਪ ॥ eko saravar kamal anoop | In the pool is the one incomparably beautiful lotus. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਸਦਾ ਬਿਗਾਸੈ ਪਰਮਲ ਰੂਪ ॥ sadaa bigaasai paramal roop | It blossoms continually; its form is pure and fragrant. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਊਜਲ ਮੋਤੀ ਚੂਗਹਿ ਹੰਸ ॥ aoojal motee choogeh hans | The swans pick up the bright jewels. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਸਰਬ ਕਲਾ ਜਗਦੀਸੈ ਅੰਸ ॥੧॥ sarab kalaa jagadeesai ans |1| They take on the essence of the All-powerful Lord of the Universe. ||1|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਜੋ ਦੀਸੈ ਸੋ ਉਪਜੈ ਬਿਨਸੈ ॥ jo deesai so upajai binasai | Whoever is seen, is subject to birth and death. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਬਿਨੁ ਜਲ ਸਰਵਰਿ ਕਮਲੁ ਨ ਦੀਸੈ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥ bin jal saravar kamal na deesai |1| rahaau | In the pool without water, the lotus is not seen. ||1||Pause|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਬਿਰਲਾ ਬੂਝੈ ਪਾਵੈ ਭੇਦੁ ॥ biralaa boojhai paavai bhed | How rare are those who know and understand this secret. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਸਾਖਾ ਤੀਨਿ ਕਹੈ ਨਿਤ ਬੇਦੁ ॥ saakhaa teen kahai nit bed | The Vedas continually speak of the three branches. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਨਾਦ ਬਿੰਦ ਕੀ ਸੁਰਤਿ ਸਮਾਇ ॥ naad bind kee surat samaae | One who merges into the knowledge of the Lord as absolute and related, - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਸੇਵਿ ਪਰਮ ਪਦੁ ਪਾਇ ॥੨॥ satigur sev param pad paae |2| serves the True Guru and obtains the supreme status. ||2|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਮੁਕਤੋ ਰਾਤਉ ਰੰਗਿ ਰਵਾਂਤਉ ॥ mukato raatau rang ravaantau | One who is imbued with the Love of the Lord and dwells continually upon Him is liberated. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਰਾਜਨ ਰਾਜਿ ਸਦਾ ਬਿਗਸਾਂਤਉ ॥ raajan raaj sadaa bigasaantau | He is the king of kings, and blossoms forth continually. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਜਿਸੁ ਤੂੰ ਰਾਖਹਿ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਧਾਰਿ ॥ jis toon raakheh kirapaa dhaar | That one whom You preserve, by bestowing Your Mercy, O Lord, - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਬੂਡਤ ਪਾਹਨ ਤਾਰਹਿ ਤਾਰਿ ॥੩॥ booddat paahan taareh taar |3| even the sinking stone - You float that one across. ||3|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਤ੍ਰਿਭਵਣ ਮਹਿ ਜੋਤਿ ਤ੍ਰਿਭਵਣ ਮਹਿ ਜਾਣਿਆ ॥ tribhavan meh jot tribhavan meh jaaniaa | Your Light is pervading the three worlds; I know that You are permeating the three worlds. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਉਲਟ ਭਈ ਘਰੁ ਘਰ ਮਹਿ ਆਣਿਆ ॥ aulatt bhee ghar ghar meh aaniaa | When my mind turned away from Maya, I came to dwell in my own home. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਅਹਿਨਿਸਿ ਭਗਤਿ ਕਰੇ ਲਿਵ ਲਾਇ ॥ ahinis bhagat kare liv laae | Nanak falls at the feet of that person who immerses himself in the Lord’s Love, - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਨਾਨਕੁ ਤਿਨ ਕੈ ਲਾਗੈ ਪਾਇ ॥੪॥੧੨॥ naanak tin kai laagai paae |4|12| And performs devotional worship night and day. ||4||12|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji

ਗੁਰਮਤਿ ਸਾਚੀ ਹੁਜਤਿ ਦੂਰਿ ॥ guramat saachee hujat door | Receiving the True Teachings from the Guru, arguments depart. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਬਹੁਤੁ ਸਿਆਣਪ ਲਾਗੈ ਧੂਰਿ ॥ bahut siaanap laagai dhoor | But through excessive cleverness, one is only plastered with dirt. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਲਾਗੀ ਮੈਲੁ ਮਿਟੈ ਸਚ ਨਾਇ ॥ laagee mail mittai sach naae | The filth of attachment is removed by the True Name of the Lord. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਗੁਰ ਪਰਸਾਦਿ ਰਹੈ ਲਿਵ ਲਾਇ ॥੧॥ gur parasaad rahai liv laae |1| By Guru’s Grace, one remains lovingly attached to the Lord. ||1|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਹੈ ਹਜੂਰਿ ਹਾਜਰੁ ਅਰਦਾਸਿ ॥ hai hajoor haajar aradaas | He is the Presence Ever-present; offer your prayers to Him. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਦੁਖੁ ਸੁਖੁ ਸਾਚੁ ਕਰਤੇ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਪਾਸਿ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥ dukh sukh saach karate prabh paas |1| rahaau | Pain and pleasure are in the Hands of God, the True Creator. ||1||Pause|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਕੂੜੁ ਕਮਾਵੈ ਆਵੈ ਜਾਵੈ ॥ koorr kamaavai aavai jaavai | One who practices falsehood comes and goes. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਕਹਣਿ ਕਥਨਿ ਵਾਰਾ ਨਹੀ ਆਵੈ ॥ kehan kathan vaaraa nahee aavai | By speaking and talking, His limits cannot be found. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਕਿਆ ਦੇਖਾ ਸੂਝ ਬੂਝ ਨ ਪਾਵੈ ॥ kiaa dekhaa soojh boojh na paavai | Whatever one sees, is not understood. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਬਿਨੁ ਨਾਵੈ ਮਨਿ ਤ੍ਰਿਪਤਿ ਨ ਆਵੈ ॥੨॥ bin naavai man tripat na aavai |2| Without the Name, satisfaction does not enter into the mind. ||2|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਜੋ ਜਨਮੇ ਸੇ ਰੋਗਿ ਵਿਆਪੇ ॥ jo janame se rog viaape | Whoever is born is afflicted by disease, - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਹਉਮੈ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੂਖਿ ਸੰਤਾਪੇ ॥ haumai maaeaa dookh santaape | tortured by the pain of egotism and Maya. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਸੇ ਜਨ ਬਾਚੇ ਜੋ ਪ੍ਰਭਿ ਰਾਖੇ ॥ se jan baache jo prabh raakhe | They alone are saved, who are protected by God. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਸੇਵਿ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਰਸੁ ਚਾਖੇ ॥੩॥ satigur sev amrit ras chaakhe |3| Serving the True Guru, they drink in the Amrit, the Ambrosial Nectar. ||3|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਚਲਤਉ ਮਨੁ ਰਾਖੈ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤੁ ਚਾਖੈ ॥ chaltau man raakhai amrit chaakhai | The unstable mind is restrained by tasting this Nectar. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਸੇਵਿ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਸਬਦੁ ਭਾਖੈ ॥ satigur sev amrit sabad bhaakhai | Serving the True Guru, one comes to cherish the Ambrosial Nectar of the Shabad. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਸਾਚੈ ਸਬਦਿ ਮੁਕਤਿ ਗਤਿ ਪਾਏ ॥ saachai sabad mukat gat paae | Through the True Word of the Shabad, the state of liberation is obtained. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਨਾਨਕ ਵਿਚਹੁ ਆਪੁ ਗਵਾਏ ॥੪॥੧੩॥ naanak vichahu aap gavaae |4|13| O Nanak, self-conceit is eradicated from within. ||4||13|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji

ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਨਾਮੁ ਸਤਿਗੁਰਿ ਦੀਆ ॥ amrit naam satigur deea | The True Guru bestows the Ambrosial Naam, the Name of the Lord. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਹਿਰਦੈ ਨਾਮੁ ਨਾਹੀ ਮਨਿ ਭੰਗੁ ॥ hiradai naam naahee man bhang | With the Naam in the heart, the mind is not separated from the Lord. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਅਨਦਿਨੁ ਨਾਲਿ ਪਿਆਰੇ ਸੰਗੁ ॥੧॥ anadin naal piaare sang |1| Night and day, one dwells with the Beloved. ||1|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਹਰਿ ਜੀਉ ਰਾਖਹੁ ਅਪਨੀ ਸਰਣਾਈ ॥ har jeeo raakhahu apanee saranaaee | O Lord, please keep me in the Protection of Your Sanctuary. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
