ਕਹੈ ਨਾਨਕੁ ਛਪੈ ਕਿਉ ਛਪਿਆ ਏਕੀ ਏਕੀ ਵੰਡਿ ਦੀਆ ॥੪॥੭॥ kahai naanak chhapai kiau chhapiaa ekee ekee vandd deea |4|7| Says Nanak, by hiding, how can the Lord be hidden? He has given each their share, one by one. ||4||7|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji

ਆਸਾ ਮਹਲਾ ੧ ॥ aasaa mahalaa 1 | Aasaa, First Mehl: - Guru Nanak Dev Ji

ਕਰਮ ਕਰਤੂਤਿ ਬੇਲਿ ਬਿਸਥਾਰੀ ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮੁ ਫਲੁ ਹੂਆ ॥ karam karatoot bel bisathaaree raam naam fal hooaa | The vine of good actions and character has spread out, and it bears the fruit of the Lord’s Name. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji

ਤਿਸੁ ਰੂਪੁ ਨ ਰੇਖ ਅਨਾਹਦੁ ਵਾਜੈ ਸਬਦੁ ਨਿਰੰਜਨਿ ਕੀਆ ॥੧॥ tis roop na rekh anaahad vaajai sabad niranjan keea |1| The Name has no form or outline; it vibrates with the unstruck Sound Current; through the Word of the Shabad, the Immaculate Lord is revealed. ||1|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji

ਕਰੇ ਵਖਿਆਣੁ ਜਾਣੈ ਜੇ ਕੋਈ ॥ kare vakhiaan jaanai je koee | One can speak on this only when he knows it. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji

ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤੁ ਪੀਵੈ ਸੋਈ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥ amrit peevai soee |1| rahaau | He alone drinks in the Ambrosial Nectar. ||1||Pause|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji

ਜਿਨੑ ਪੀਆ ਸੇ ਮਸਤ ਭਏ ਹੈ ਤੂਟੇ ਬੰਧਨ ਫਾਹੇ ॥ jina peea se masat bhe hai tootte bandhan faahe | Those who drink it in are enraptured; their bonds and shackles are cut away. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji

ਜੋਤੀ ਜੋਤਿ ਸਮਾਣੀ ਭੀਤਰਿ ਤਾ ਛੋਡੇ ਮਾਇਆ ਕੇ ਲਾਹੇ ॥੨॥ jotee jot samaanee bheetar taa chhodde maaeaa ke laahe |2| When one’s light blends into the Divine Light, then the desire for Maya is ended. ||2|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji

ਸਰਬ ਜੋਤਿ ਰੂਪੁ ਤੇਰਾ ਦੇਖਿਆ ਸਗਲ ਭਵਨ ਤੇਰੀ ਮਾਇਆ ॥ sarab jot roop teraa dekhiaa sagal bhavan teree maaeaa | Among all lights, I behold Your Form; all the worlds are Your Maya. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji

ਰਾਰੈ ਰੂਪਿ ਨਿਰਾਲਮੁ ਬੈਠਾ ਨਦਰਿ ਕਰੇ ਵਿਚਿ ਛਾਇਆ ॥੩॥ raarai roop niraalam baitthaa nadar kare vich chhaaeaa |3| Among the tumults and forms, He sits in serene detachment; He bestows His Glance of Grace upon those who are engrossed in the illusion. ||3|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji

ਬੀਣਾ ਸਬਦੁ ਵਜਾਵੈ ਜੋਗੀ ਦਰਸਨਿ ਰੂਪਿ ਅਪਾਰਾ ॥ beenaa sabad vajaavai jogee darasan roop apaaraa | The Yogi who plays on the instrument of the Shabad gains the Blessed Vision of the Infinitely Beautiful Lord. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji

ਸਬਦਿ ਅਨਾਹਦਿ ਸੋ ਸਹੁ ਰਾਤਾ ਨਾਨਕੁ ਕਹੈ ਵਿਚਾਰਾ ॥੪॥੮॥ sabad anaahad so sahu raataa naanak kahai vichaaraa |4|8| He, the Lord, is immersed in the Unstruck Shabad of the Word, says Nanak, the humble and meek. ||4||8|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji

ਆਸਾ ਮਹਲਾ ੧ ॥ aasaa mahalaa 1 | Aasaa, First Mehl: - Guru Nanak Dev Ji

ਮੈ ਗੁਣ ਗਲਾ ਕੇ ਸਿਰਿ ਭਾਰ ॥ mai gun galaa ke sir bhaar | My virtue is that I carry the load of my words upon my head. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji

ਗਲੀ ਗਲਾ ਸਿਰਜਣਹਾਰ ॥ galee galaa sirajanahaar | The real words are the Words of the Creator Lord. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji

ਖਾਣਾ ਪੀਣਾ ਹਸਣਾ ਬਾਦਿ ॥ khaanaa peenaa hasanaa baad | How useless are eating, drinking and laughing, - Guru Nanak Dev Ji

ਜਬ ਲਗੁ ਰਿਦੈ ਨ ਆਵਹਿ ਯਾਦਿ ॥੧॥ jab lag ridai na aaveh yaad |1| if the Lord is not cherished in the heart! ||1|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji

ਤਉ ਪਰਵਾਹ ਕੇਹੀ ਕਿਆ ਕੀਜੈ ॥ tau paravaah kehee kiaa keejai | Why should someone care for anything else, - Guru Nanak Dev Ji

ਜਨਮਿ ਜਨਮਿ ਕਿਛੁ ਲੀਜੀ ਲੀਜੈ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥ janam janam kichh leejee leejai |1| rahaau | if throughout his life, he gathers in that which is truly worth gathering? ||1||Pause|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji

ਮਨ ਕੀ ਮਤਿ ਮਤਾਗਲੁ ਮਤਾ ॥ man kee mat mataagal mataa | The intellect of the mind is like a drunken elephant. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji

ਜੋ ਕਿਛੁ ਬੋਲੀਐ ਸਭੁ ਖਤੋ ਖਤਾ ॥ jo kichh boleeai sabh khato khataa | Whatever one utters is totally false, the most false of the false. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji

ਕਿਆ ਮੁਹੁ ਲੈ ਕੀਚੈ ਅਰਦਾਸਿ ॥ kiaa muhu lai keechai aradaas | So what face should we put on to offer our prayer, - Guru Nanak Dev Ji

ਪਾਪੁ ਪੁੰਨੁ ਦੁਇ ਸਾਖੀ ਪਾਸਿ ॥੨॥ paap pun due saakhee paas |2| when both virtue and vice are close at hand as witnesses? ||2|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji

ਜੈਸਾ ਤੂੰ ਕਰਹਿ ਤੈਸਾ ਕੋ ਹੋਇ ॥ jaisaa toon kareh taisaa ko hoe | As You make us, so we become. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji

ਤੁਝ ਬਿਨੁ ਦੂਜਾ ਨਾਹੀ ਕੋਇ ॥ tujh bin doojaa naahee koe | Without You, there is no other at all. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji

ਜੇਹੀ ਤੂੰ ਮਤਿ ਦੇਹਿ ਤੇਹੀ ਕੋ ਪਾਵੈ ॥ jehee toon mat dehi tehee ko paavai | As is the understanding which You bestow, so do we receive. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji

ਤੁਧੁ ਆਪੇ ਭਾਵੈ ਤਿਵੈ ਚਲਾਵੈ ॥੩॥ tudh aape bhaavai tivai chalaavai |3| As it pleases Your Will, so do You lead us. ||3|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji

ਰਾਗ ਰਤਨ ਪਰੀਆ ਪਰਵਾਰ ॥ raag ratan pareea paravaar | The divine crystalline harmonies, their consorts, and their celestial families - Guru Nanak Dev Ji

ਤਿਸੁ ਵਿਚਿ ਉਪਜੈ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤੁ ਸਾਰ ॥ tis vich upajai amrit saar | from them, the essence of Ambrosial Nectar is produced. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji

ਨਾਨਕ ਕਰਤੇ ਕਾ ਇਹੁ ਧਨੁ ਮਾਲੁ ॥ naanak karate kaa ihu dhan maal | O Nanak, this is the wealth and property of the Creator Lord. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji

ਜੇ ਕੋ ਬੂਝੈ ਏਹੁ ਬੀਚਾਰੁ ॥੪॥੯॥ je ko boojhai ehu beechaar |4|9| If only this essential reality were understood! ||4||9|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji

ਕਰਿ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਅਪਨੈ ਘਰਿ ਆਇਆ ਤਾ ਮਿਲਿ ਸਖੀਆ ਕਾਜੁ ਰਚਾਇਆ ॥ kar kirapaa apanai ghar aaeaa taa mil sakheea kaaj rachaaeaa | When by His Grace He came to my home, then my companions met together to celebrate my marriage. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji

ਖੇਲੁ ਦੇਖਿ ਮਨਿ ਅਨਦੁ ਭਇਆ ਸਹੁ ਵੀਆਹਣ ਆਇਆ ॥੧॥ khel dekh man anad bheaa sahu veeaahan aaeaa |1| Beholding this play, my mind became blissful; my Husband Lord has come to marry me. ||1|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji

ਗਾਵਹੁ ਗਾਵਹੁ ਕਾਮਣੀ ਬਿਬੇਕ ਬੀਚਾਰੁ ॥ gaavahu gaavahu kaamanee bibek beechaar | So sing - yes, sing the songs of wisdom and reflection, O brides. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji

ਹਮਰੈ ਘਰਿ ਆਇਆ ਜਗਜੀਵਨੁ ਭਤਾਰੁ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥ hamarai ghar aaeaa jagajeevan bhataar |1| rahaau | My spouse, the Life of the world, has come into my home. ||1||Pause|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji

ਗੁਰੂ ਦੁਆਰੈ ਹਮਰਾ ਵੀਆਹੁ ਜਿ ਹੋਆ ਜਾਂ ਸਹੁ ਮਿਲਿਆ ਤਾਂ ਜਾਨਿਆ ॥ guroo duaarai hamaraa veeaahu ji hoaa jaan sahu miliaa taan jaaniaa | When I was married within the Gurdwara, the Guru’s Gate, I met my Husband Lord, and I came to know Him. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji

ਤਿਹੁ ਲੋਕਾ ਮਹਿ ਸਬਦੁ ਰਵਿਆ ਹੈ ਆਪੁ ਗਇਆ ਮਨੁ ਮਾਨਿਆ ॥੨॥ tihu lokaa meh sabad raviaa hai aap geaa man maaniaa |2| The Word of His Shabad is pervading the three worlds; when my ego was quieted, my mind became happy. ||2|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji

ਆਪਣਾ ਕਾਰਜੁ ਆਪਿ ਸਵਾਰੇ ਹੋਰਨਿ ਕਾਰਜੁ ਨ ਹੋਈ ॥ aapanaa kaaraj aap savaare horan kaaraj na hoee | He Himself arranges His own affairs; His affairs cannot be arranged by anyone else. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji

ਜਿਤੁ ਕਾਰਜਿ ਸਤੁ ਸੰਤੋਖੁ ਦਇਆ ਧਰਮੁ ਹੈ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਬੂਝੈ ਕੋਈ ॥੩॥ jit kaaraj sat santokh deaa dharam hai guramukh boojhai koee |3| By the affair of this marriage, truth, contentment, mercy and faith are produced; but how rare is that Gurmukh who understands it! ||3|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji

ਭਨਤਿ ਨਾਨਕੁ ਸਭਨਾ ਕਾ ਪਿਰੁ ਏਕੋ ਸੋਇ ॥ bhanat naanak sabhanaa kaa pir eko soe | Says Nanak, that Lord alone is the Husband of all. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji

ਜਿਸ ਨੋ ਨਦਰਿ ਕਰੇ ਸਾ ਸੋਹਾਗਣਿ ਹੋਇ ॥੪॥੧੦॥ jis no nadar kare saa sohaagan hoe |4|10| She, upon whom He casts His Glance of Grace, becomes the happy soul-bride. ||4||10|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji

ਗ੍ਰਿਹੁ ਬਨੁ ਸਮਸਰਿ ਸਹਜਿ ਸੁਭਾਇ ॥ grihu ban samasar sehaj subhaae | Home and forest are the same, for one who dwells in the balance of intuitive peace and poise. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji

ਦੁਰਮਤਿ ਗਤੁ ਭਈ ਕੀਰਤਿ ਠਾਇ ॥ duramat gat bhee keerat tthaae | His evil-mindedness departs, and the Praises of God take its place. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji

ਸਚ ਪਉੜੀ ਸਾਚਉ ਮੁਖਿ ਨਾਂਉ ॥ sach paurree saachau mukh naanau | To chant the True Name with one’s mouth is the true ladder. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
