ਰਹਦੇ ਖੁਹਦੇ ਨਿੰਦਕ ਮਾਰਿਅਨੁ ਕਰਿ ਆਪੇ ਆਹਰੁ ॥ rahade khuhade nindak maarian kar aape aahar | By their own efforts, the slanderers have destroyed all remnants of themselves. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਸੰਤ ਸਹਾਈ ਨਾਨਕਾ ਵਰਤੈ ਸਭ ਜਾਹਰੁ ॥੧॥ sant sahaaee naanakaa varatai sabh jaahar |1| The Support of the Saints, O Nanak, is manifest, pervading everywhere. ||1|| - Guru Arjan Dev Ji

ਮੁੰਢਹੁ ਭੁਲੇ ਮੁੰਢ ਤੇ ਕਿਥੈ ਪਾਇਨਿ ਹਥੁ ॥ mundtahu bhule mundt te kithai paaein hath | Those who went astray from the Primal Being in the very beginning - where can they find refuge? - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਤਿੰਨੈ ਮਾਰੇ ਨਾਨਕਾ ਜਿ ਕਰਣ ਕਾਰਣ ਸਮਰਥੁ ॥੨॥ tinai maare naanakaa ji karan kaaran samarath |2| O Nanak, they are struck down by the All-powerful, the Cause of causes. ||2|| - Guru Arjan Dev Ji

ਲੈ ਫਾਹੇ ਰਾਤੀ ਤੁਰਹਿ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਜਾਣੈ ਪ੍ਰਾਣੀ ॥ lai faahe raatee tureh prabh jaanai praanee | They take the noose in their hands, and go out at night to strangle others, but God knows everything, O mortal. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਤਕਹਿ ਨਾਰਿ ਪਰਾਈਆ ਲੁਕਿ ਅੰਦਰਿ ਠਾਣੀ ॥ takeh naar paraaeea luk andar tthaanee | They spy on other men’s women, concealed in their hiding places. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਸੰਨੑੀ ਦੇਨਿੑ ਵਿਖੰਮ ਥਾਇ ਮਿਠਾ ਮਦੁ ਮਾਣੀ ॥ sanaee dena vikham thaae mitthaa mad maanee | They break into well-protected places, and revel in sweet wine. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਕਰਮੀ ਆਪੋ ਆਪਣੀ ਆਪੇ ਪਛੁਤਾਣੀ ॥ karamee aapo aapanee aape pachhutaanee | But they shall come to regret their actions - they create their own karma. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਅਜਰਾਈਲੁ ਫਰੇਸਤਾ ਤਿਲ ਪੀੜੇ ਘਾਣੀ ॥੨੭॥ ajaraaeel faresataa til peerre ghaanee |27| Azraa-eel, the Angel of Death, shall crush them like sesame seeds in the oil-press. ||27|| - Guru Arjan Dev Ji

ਸੇਵਕ ਸਚੇ ਸਾਹ ਕੇ ਸੇਈ ਪਰਵਾਣੁ ॥ sevak sache saah ke seee paravaan | The servants of the True King are acceptable and approved. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਦੂਜਾ ਸੇਵਨਿ ਨਾਨਕਾ ਸੇ ਪਚਿ ਪਚਿ ਮੁਏ ਅਜਾਣ ॥੧॥ doojaa sevan naanakaa se pach pach mue ajaan |1| Those ignorant ones who serve duality, O Nanak, rot, waste away and die. ||1|| - Guru Arjan Dev Ji

ਜੋ ਧੁਰਿ ਲਿਖਿਆ ਲੇਖੁ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਮੇਟਣਾ ਨ ਜਾਇ ॥ jo dhur likhiaa lekh prabh mettanaa na jaae | That destiny which was pre-ordained by God from the very beginning cannot be erased. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮੁ ਧਨੁ ਵਖਰੋ ਨਾਨਕ ਸਦਾ ਧਿਆਇ ॥੨॥ raam naam dhan vakharo naanak sadaa dhiaae |2| The wealth of the Lord’s Name is Nanak’s capital; he meditates on it forever. ||2|| - Guru Arjan Dev Ji

ਨਾਰਾਇਣਿ ਲਇਆ ਨਾਠੂੰਗੜਾ ਪੈਰ ਕਿਥੈ ਰਖੈ ॥ naaraaein leaa naatthoongarraa pair kithai rakhai | One who has received a kick from the Lord God - where can he place his foot? - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਕਰਦਾ ਪਾਪ ਅਮਿਤਿਆ ਨਿਤ ਵਿਸੋ ਚਖੈ ॥ karadaa paap amitiaa nit viso chakhai | He commits countless sins, and continually eats poison. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਨਿੰਦਾ ਕਰਦਾ ਪਚਿ ਮੁਆ ਵਿਚਿ ਦੇਹੀ ਭਖੈ ॥ nindaa karadaa pach muaa vich dehee bhakhai | Slandering others, he wastes away and dies; within his body, he burns. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਸਚੈ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਮਾਰਿਆ ਕਉਣੁ ਤਿਸ ਨੋ ਰਖੈ ॥ sachai saahib maariaa kaun tis no rakhai | One who has been struck down by the True Lord and Master - who can save him now? - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਨਾਨਕ ਤਿਸੁ ਸਰਣਾਗਤੀ ਜੋ ਪੁਰਖੁ ਅਲਖੈ ॥੨੮॥ naanak tis saranaagatee jo purakh alakhai |28| Nanak has entered the Sanctuary of the Unseen Lord, the Primal Being. ||28|| - Guru Arjan Dev Ji

ਨਰਕ ਘੋਰ ਬਹੁ ਦੁਖ ਘਣੇ ਅਕਿਰਤਘਣਾ ਕਾ ਥਾਨੁ ॥ narak ghor bahu dukh ghane akirataghanaa kaa thaan | In the most horrible hell, there is terrible pain and suffering. It is the place of the ungrateful. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਤਿਨਿ ਪ੍ਰਭਿ ਮਾਰੇ ਨਾਨਕਾ ਹੋਇ ਹੋਇ ਮੁਏ ਹਰਾਮੁ ॥੧॥ tin prabh maare naanakaa hoe hoe mue haraam |1| They are struck down by God, O Nanak, and they die a most miserable death. ||1|| - Guru Arjan Dev Ji

ਅਵਖਧ ਸਭੇ ਕੀਤਿਅਨੁ ਨਿੰਦਕ ਕਾ ਦਾਰੂ ਨਾਹਿ ॥ avakhadh sabhe keetian nindak kaa daaroo naeh | All kinds of medicines may be prepared, but there is no cure for the slanderer. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਆਪਿ ਭੁਲਾਏ ਨਾਨਕਾ ਪਚਿ ਪਚਿ ਜੋਨੀ ਪਾਹਿ ॥੨॥ aap bhulaae naanakaa pach pach jonee paeh |2| Those whom the Lord Himself misleads, O Nanak, putrefy and rot in reincarnation. ||2|| - Guru Arjan Dev Ji

ਤੁਸਿ ਦਿਤਾ ਪੂਰੈ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਹਰਿ ਧਨੁ ਸਚੁ ਅਖੁਟੁ ॥ tus ditaa poorai satiguroo har dhan sach akhutt | By His Pleasure, the True Guru has blessed me with the inexhaustible wealth of the Name of the True Lord. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਸਭਿ ਅੰਦੇਸੇ ਮਿਟਿ ਗਏ ਜਮ ਕਾ ਭਉ ਛੁਟੁ ॥ sabh andese mitt ge jam kaa bhau chhutt | All my anxiety is ended; I am rid of the fear of death. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਕਾਮ ਕ੍ਰੋਧ ਬੁਰਿਆਈਆਂ ਸੰਗਿ ਸਾਧੂ ਤੁਟੁ ॥ kaam krodh buriaaeean sang saadhoo tutt | Sexual desire, anger and other evils have been subdued in the Saadh Sangat, the Company of the Holy. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਵਿਣੁ ਸਚੇ ਦੂਜਾ ਸੇਵਦੇ ਹੁਇ ਮਰਸਨਿ ਬੁਟੁ ॥ vin sache doojaa sevade hue marasan butt | Those who serve another, instead of the True Lord, die unfulfilled in the end. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਨਾਨਕ ਕਉ ਗੁਰਿ ਬਖਸਿਆ ਨਾਮੈ ਸੰਗਿ ਜੁਟੁ ॥੨੯॥ naanak kau gur bakhasiaa naamai sang jutt |29| The Guru has blessed Nanak with forgiveness; he is united with the Naam, the Name of the Lord. ||29|| - Guru Arjan Dev Ji

ਤਪਾ ਨ ਹੋਵੈ ਅੰਦ੍ਰਹੁ ਲੋਭੀ ਨਿਤ ਮਾਇਆ ਨੋ ਫਿਰੈ ਜਜਮਾਲਿਆ ॥ tapaa na hovai andrahu lobhee nit maaeaa no firai jajamaaliaa | He is not a penitent, who is greedy within his heart, and who constantly chases after Maya like a leper. - Guru Ramdas Ji
ਅਗੋ ਦੇ ਸਦਿਆ ਸਤੈ ਦੀ ਭਿਖਿਆ ਲਏ ਨਾਹੀ ਪਿਛੋ ਦੇ ਪਛੁਤਾਇ ਕੈ ਆਣਿ ਤਪੈ ਪੁਤੁ ਵਿਚਿ ਬਹਾਲਿਆ ॥ ago de sadiaa satai dee bhikhiaa le naahee pichho de pachhutaae kai aan tapai put vich bahaaliaa | When this penitent was first invited, he refused our charity; but later he repented and sent his son, who was seated in the congregation. - Guru Ramdas Ji
ਪੰਚ ਲੋਗ ਸਭਿ ਹਸਣ ਲਗੇ ਤਪਾ ਲੋਭਿ ਲਹਰਿ ਹੈ ਗਾਲਿਆ ॥ panch log sabh hasan lage tapaa lobh lehar hai gaaliaa | The village elders all laughed, saying that the waves of greed have destroyed this penitent. - Guru Ramdas Ji
ਜਿਥੈ ਥੋੜਾ ਧਨੁ ਵੇਖੈ ਤਿਥੈ ਤਪਾ ਭਿਟੈ ਨਾਹੀ ਧਨਿ ਬਹੁਤੈ ਡਿਠੈ ਤਪੈ ਧਰਮੁ ਹਾਰਿਆ ॥ jithai thorraa dhan vekhai tithai tapaa bhittai naahee dhan bahutai dditthai tapai dharam haariaa | If he sees only a little wealth, he does not bother to go there; but when he sees a lot of wealth, the penitent forsakes his vows. - Guru Ramdas Ji
ਭਾਈ ਏਹੁ ਤਪਾ ਨ ਹੋਵੀ ਬਗੁਲਾ ਹੈ ਬਹਿ ਸਾਧ ਜਨਾ ਵੀਚਾਰਿਆ ॥ bhaaee ehu tapaa na hovee bagulaa hai beh saadh janaa veechaariaa | O Siblings of Destiny, he is not a penitent - he is only a stork. Sitting together, the Holy Congregation has so decided. - Guru Ramdas Ji
ਸਤ ਪੁਰਖ ਕੀ ਤਪਾ ਨਿੰਦਾ ਕਰੈ ਸੰਸਾਰੈ ਕੀ ਉਸਤਤੀ ਵਿਚਿ ਹੋਵੈ ਏਤੁ ਦੋਖੈ ਤਪਾ ਦਯਿ ਮਾਰਿਆ ॥ sat purakh kee tapaa nindaa karai sansaarai kee usatatee vich hovai et dokhai tapaa day maariaa | The penitent slanders the True Primal Being, and sings the praises of the material world. For this sin, he is cursed by the Lord. - Guru Ramdas Ji
ਮਹਾ ਪੁਰਖਾਂ ਕੀ ਨਿੰਦਾ ਕਾ ਵੇਖੁ ਜਿ ਤਪੇ ਨੋ ਫਲੁ ਲਗਾ ਸਭੁ ਗਇਆ ਤਪੇ ਕਾ ਘਾਲਿਆ ॥ mahaa purakhaan kee nindaa kaa vekh ji tape no fal lagaa sabh geaa tape kaa ghaaliaa | Behold the fruit the penitent gathers, for slandering the Great Primal Being; all his labors have gone in vain. - Guru Ramdas Ji
ਬਾਹਰਿ ਬਹੈ ਪੰਚਾ ਵਿਚਿ ਤਪਾ ਸਦਾਏ ॥ ਅੰਦਰਿ ਬਹੈ ਤਪਾ ਪਾਪ ਕਮਾਏ ॥ ਹਰਿ ਅੰਦਰਲਾ ਪਾਪੁ ਪੰਚਾ ਨੋ ਉਘਾ ਕਰਿ ਵੇਖਾਲਿਆ ॥ baahar bahai panchaa vich tapaa sadaae | andar bahai tapaa paap kamaae | har andaralaa paap panchaa no ughaa kar vekhaaliaa | When he sits outside among the elders, he is called a penitent; But when he sits within the congregation, the penitent commits sin. The Lord has exposed the penitent’s secret sin to the elders. - Guru Ramdas Ji
