ਰਚਿ ਰਚਨਾ ਅਪਨੀ ਕਲ ਧਾਰੀ ॥ rach rachanaa apanee kal dhaaree | Having created the creation, He infuses His own power into it. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਅਨਿਕ ਬਾਰ ਨਾਨਕ ਬਲਿਹਾਰੀ ॥੮॥੧੮॥ anik baar naanak balihaaree |8|18| So many times, Nanak is a sacrifice to Him. ||8||18|| - Guru Arjan Dev Ji

ਸਾਥਿ ਨ ਚਾਲੈ ਬਿਨੁ ਭਜਨ ਬਿਖਿਆ ਸਗਲੀ ਛਾਰੁ ॥ saath na chaalai bin bhajan bikhiaa sagalee chhaar | Nothing shall go along with you, except your devotion. All corruption is like ashes. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਕਮਾਵਨਾ ਨਾਨਕ ਇਹੁ ਧਨੁ ਸਾਰੁ ॥੧॥ har har naam kamaavanaa naanak ihu dhan saar |1| Practice the Name of the Lord, Har, Har. O Nanak, this is the most excellent wealth. ||1|| - Guru Arjan Dev Ji

ਸੰਤ ਜਨਾ ਮਿਲਿ ਕਰਹੁ ਬੀਚਾਰੁ ॥ sant janaa mil karahu beechaar | Joining the Company of the Saints, practice deep meditation. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਏਕੁ ਸਿਮਰਿ ਨਾਮ ਆਧਾਰੁ ॥ ek simar naam aadhaar | Remember the One, and take the Support of the Naam, the Name of the Lord. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਅਵਰਿ ਉਪਾਵ ਸਭਿ ਮੀਤ ਬਿਸਾਰਹੁ ॥ avar upaav sabh meet bisaarahu | Forget all other efforts, O my friend - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਚਰਨ ਕਮਲ ਰਿਦ ਮਹਿ ਉਰਿ ਧਾਰਹੁ ॥ charan kamal rid meh ur dhaarahu |
- enshrine the Lord’s Lotus Feet within your heart. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਕਰਨ ਕਾਰਨ ਸੋ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਸਮਰਥੁ ॥ karan kaaran so prabh samarath | God is All-powerful; He is the Cause of causes. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਦ੍ਰਿੜੁ ਕਰਿ ਗਹਹੁ ਨਾਮੁ ਹਰਿ ਵਥੁ ॥ drirr kar gahahu naam har vath | Grasp firmly the object of the Lord’s Name. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਇਹੁ ਧਨੁ ਸੰਚਹੁ ਹੋਵਹੁ ਭਗਵੰਤ ॥ eihu dhan sanchahu hovahu bhagavant | Gather this wealth, and become very fortunate. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਸੰਤ ਜਨਾ ਕਾ ਨਿਰਮਲ ਮੰਤ ॥ sant janaa kaa niramal mant | Pure are the instructions of the humble Saints. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਏਕ ਆਸ ਰਾਖਹੁ ਮਨ ਮਾਹਿ ॥ ek aas raakhahu man maeh | Keep faith in the One Lord within your mind. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਸਰਬ ਰੋਗ ਨਾਨਕ ਮਿਟਿ ਜਾਹਿ ॥੧॥ sarab rog naanak mitt jaeh |1| All disease, O Nanak, shall then be dispelled. ||1|| - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਜਿਸੁ ਧਨ ਕਉ ਚਾਰਿ ਕੁੰਟ ਉਠਿ ਧਾਵਹਿ ॥ jis dhan kau chaar kuntt utth dhaaveh | The wealth which you chase after in the four directions - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਸੋ ਧਨੁ ਹਰਿ ਸੇਵਾ ਤੇ ਪਾਵਹਿ ॥ so dhan har sevaa te paaveh | you shall obtain that wealth by serving the Lord. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਜਿਸੁ ਸੁਖ ਕਉ ਨਿਤ ਬਾਛਹਿ ਮੀਤ ॥ jis sukh kau nit baachheh meet | The peace, which you always yearn for, O friend - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਸੋ ਸੁਖੁ ਸਾਧੂ ਸੰਗਿ ਪਰੀਤਿ ॥ so sukh saadhoo sang pareet | that peace comes by the love of the Company of the Holy. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਜਿਸੁ ਸੋਭਾ ਕਉ ਕਰਹਿ ਭਲੀ ਕਰਨੀ ॥ jis sobhaa kau kareh bhalee karanee | The glory, for which you perform good deeds - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਸਾ ਸੋਭਾ ਭਜੁ ਹਰਿ ਕੀ ਸਰਨੀ ॥ saa sobhaa bhaj har kee saranee |
- you shall obtain that glory by seeking the Lord’s Sanctuary. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਅਨਿਕ ਉਪਾਵੀ ਰੋਗੁ ਨ ਜਾਇ ॥ anik upaavee rog na jaae | All sorts of remedies have not cured the disease - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਰੋਗੁ ਮਿਟੈ ਹਰਿ ਅਵਖਧੁ ਲਾਇ ॥ rog mittai har avakhadh laae |
- the disease is cured only by giving the medicine of the Lord’s Name. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਸਰਬ ਨਿਧਾਨ ਮਹਿ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਨਿਧਾਨੁ ॥ sarab nidhaan meh har naam nidhaan | Of all treasures, the Lord’s Name is the supreme treasure. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਜਪਿ ਨਾਨਕ ਦਰਗਹਿ ਪਰਵਾਨੁ ॥੨॥ jap naanak darageh paravaan |2| Chant it, O Nanak, and be accepted in the Court of the Lord. ||2|| - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਮਨੁ ਪਰਬੋਧਹੁ ਹਰਿ ਕੈ ਨਾਇ ॥ man parabodhahu har kai naae | Enlighten your mind with the Name of the Lord. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਦਹ ਦਿਸਿ ਧਾਵਤ ਆਵੈ ਠਾਇ ॥ deh dis dhaavat aavai tthaae | Having wandered around in the ten directions, it comes to its place of rest. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਤਾ ਕਉ ਬਿਘਨੁ ਨ ਲਾਗੈ ਕੋਇ ॥ taa kau bighan na laagai koe | No obstacle stands in the way of one - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਜਾ ਕੈ ਰਿਦੈ ਬਸੈ ਹਰਿ ਸੋਇ ॥ jaa kai ridai basai har soe | whose heart is filled with the Lord. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਕਲਿ ਤਾਤੀ ਠਾਂਢਾ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਉ ॥ kal taatee tthaandtaa har naau | The Dark Age of Kali Yuga is so hot; the Lord’s Name is soothing and cool. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਸਿਮਰਿ ਸਿਮਰਿ ਸਦਾ ਸੁਖ ਪਾਉ ॥ simar simar sadaa sukh paau | Remember, remember it in meditation, and obtain everlasting peace. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਭਉ ਬਿਨਸੈ ਪੂਰਨ ਹੋਇ ਆਸ ॥ bhau binasai pooran hoe aas | Your fear shall be dispelled, and your hopes shall be fulfilled. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਭਗਤਿ ਭਾਇ ਆਤਮ ਪਰਗਾਸ ॥ bhagat bhaae aatam paragaas | By devotional worship and loving adoration, your soul shall be enlightened. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਤਿਤੁ ਘਰਿ ਜਾਇ ਬਸੈ ਅਬਿਨਾਸੀ ॥ tit ghar jaae basai abinaasee | You shall go to that home, and live forever. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਕਹੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਕਾਟੀ ਜਮ ਫਾਸੀ ॥੩॥ kahu naanak kaattee jam faasee |3| Says Nanak, the noose of death is cut away. ||3|| - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਤਤੁ ਬੀਚਾਰੁ ਕਹੈ ਜਨੁ ਸਾਚਾ ॥ tat beechaar kahai jan saachaa | One who contemplates the essence of reality, is said to be the true person. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਜਨਮਿ ਮਰੈ ਸੋ ਕਾਚੋ ਕਾਚਾ ॥ janam marai so kaacho kaachaa | Birth and death are the lot of the false and the insincere. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਆਵਾ ਗਵਨੁ ਮਿਟੈ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਸੇਵ ॥ aavaa gavan mittai prabh sev | Coming and going in reincarnation is ended by serving God. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਆਪੁ ਤਿਆਗਿ ਸਰਨਿ ਗੁਰਦੇਵ ॥ aap tiaag saran guradev | Give up your selfishness and conceit, and seek the Sanctuary of the Divine Guru. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਇਉ ਰਤਨ ਜਨਮ ਕਾ ਹੋਇ ਉਧਾਰੁ ॥ eiau ratan janam kaa hoe udhaar | Thus the jewel of this human life is saved. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਸਿਮਰਿ ਪ੍ਰਾਨ ਆਧਾਰੁ ॥ har har simar praan aadhaar | Remember the Lord, Har, Har, the Support of the breath of life. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਅਨਿਕ ਉਪਾਵ ਨ ਛੂਟਨਹਾਰੇ ॥ anik upaav na chhoottanahaare | By all sorts of efforts, people are not saved - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਸਿੰਮ੍ਰਿਤਿ ਸਾਸਤ ਬੇਦ ਬੀਚਾਰੇ ॥ sinmrit saasat bed beechaare | not by studying the Simritees, the Shaastras or the Vedas. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਹਰਿ ਕੀ ਭਗਤਿ ਕਰਹੁ ਮਨੁ ਲਾਇ ॥ har kee bhagat karahu man laae | Worship the Lord with whole-hearted devotion. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਮਨਿ ਬੰਛਤ ਨਾਨਕ ਫਲ ਪਾਇ ॥੪॥ man banchhat naanak fal paae |4| O Nanak, you shall obtain the fruits of your mind’s desire. ||4|| - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਸੰਗਿ ਨ ਚਾਲਸਿ ਤੇਰੈ ਧਨਾ ॥ sang na chaalas terai dhanaa | Your wealth shall not go with you; - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਤੂੰ ਕਿਆ ਲਪਟਾਵਹਿ ਮੂਰਖ ਮਨਾ ॥ toon kiaa lapattaaveh moorakh manaa | why do you cling to it, you fool? - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਸੁਤ ਮੀਤ ਕੁਟੰਬ ਅਰੁ ਬਨਿਤਾ ॥ sut meet kuttanb ar banitaa | Children, friends, family and spouse - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਇਨ ਤੇ ਕਹਹੁ ਤੁਮ ਕਵਨ ਸਨਾਥਾ ॥ ein te kahahu tum kavan sanaathaa | who of these shall accompany you? - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਰਾਜ ਰੰਗ ਮਾਇਆ ਬਿਸਥਾਰ ॥ raaj rang maaeaa bisathaar | Power, pleasure, and the vast expanse of Maya - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਇਨ ਤੇ ਕਹਹੁ ਕਵਨ ਛੁਟਕਾਰ ॥ ein te kahahu kavan chhuttakaar | who has ever escaped from these? - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਅਸੁ ਹਸਤੀ ਰਥ ਅਸਵਾਰੀ ॥ as hasatee rath asavaaree | Horses, elephants, chariots and pageantry - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਝੂਠਾ ਡੰਫੁ ਝੂਠੁ ਪਾਸਾਰੀ ॥ jhootthaa ddanf jhootth paasaaree |
- false shows and false displays. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਜਿਨਿ ਦੀਏ ਤਿਸੁ ਬੁਝੈ ਨ ਬਿਗਾਨਾ ॥ jin dee tis bujhai na bigaanaa | The fool does not acknowledge the One who gave this; - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਨਾਮੁ ਬਿਸਾਰਿ ਨਾਨਕ ਪਛੁਤਾਨਾ ॥੫॥ naam bisaar naanak pachhutaanaa |5| forgetting the Naam, O Nanak, he will repent in the end. ||5|| - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਗੁਰ ਕੀ ਮਤਿ ਤੂੰ ਲੇਹਿ ਇਆਨੇ ॥ gur kee mat toon lehi eaane | Take the Guru’s advice, you ignorant fool; - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਭਗਤਿ ਬਿਨਾ ਬਹੁ ਡੂਬੇ ਸਿਆਨੇ ॥ bhagat binaa bahu ddoobe siaane | without devotion, even the clever have drowned. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਹਰਿ ਕੀ ਭਗਤਿ ਕਰਹੁ ਮਨ ਮੀਤ ॥ har kee bhagat karahu man meet | Worship the Lord with heart-felt devotion, my friend; - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਨਿਰਮਲ ਹੋਇ ਤੁਮੑਾਰੋ ਚੀਤ ॥ niramal hoe tumaaro cheet | your consciousness shall become pure. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
