ਹਰਿ ਕਾ ਨਾਮੁ ਜਨ ਕਉ ਭੋਗ ਜੋਗ ॥ har kaa naam jan kau bhog jog | The Name of the Lord is the enjoyment and Yoga of His servants. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਜਪਤ ਕਛੁ ਨਾਹਿ ਬਿਓਗੁ ॥ har naam japat kachh naeh biog | Chanting the Lord’s Name, there is no separation from Him. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਜਨੁ ਰਾਤਾ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮ ਕੀ ਸੇਵਾ ॥ jan raataa har naam kee sevaa | His servants are imbued with the service of the Lord’s Name. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਨਾਨਕ ਪੂਜੈ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਦੇਵਾ ॥੬॥ naanak poojai har har devaa |6| O Nanak, worship the Lord, the Lord Divine, Har, Har. ||6|| - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਜਨ ਕੈ ਮਾਲੁ ਖਜੀਨਾ ॥ har har jan kai maal khajeenaa | The Lord’s Name, Har, Har, is the treasure of wealth of His servants. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਹਰਿ ਧਨੁ ਜਨ ਕਉ ਆਪਿ ਪ੍ਰਭਿ ਦੀਨਾ ॥ har dhan jan kau aap prabh deenaa | The treasure of the Lord has been bestowed on His servants by God Himself. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਜਨ ਕੈ ਓਟ ਸਤਾਣੀ ॥ har har jan kai ott sataanee | The Lord, Har, Har is the All-powerful Protection of His servants. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਹਰਿ ਪ੍ਰਤਾਪਿ ਜਨ ਅਵਰ ਨ ਜਾਣੀ ॥ har prataap jan avar na jaanee | His servants know no other than the Lord’s Magnificence. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਓਤਿ ਪੋਤਿ ਜਨ ਹਰਿ ਰਸਿ ਰਾਤੇ ॥ ot pot jan har ras raate | Through and through, His servants are imbued with the Lord’s Love. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਸੁੰਨ ਸਮਾਧਿ ਨਾਮ ਰਸ ਮਾਤੇ ॥ sun samaadh naam ras maate | In deepest Samaadhi, they are intoxicated with the essence of the Naam. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਆਠ ਪਹਰ ਜਨੁ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਜਪੈ ॥ aatth pehar jan har har japai | Twenty-four hours a day, His servants chant Har, Har. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਹਰਿ ਕਾ ਭਗਤੁ ਪ੍ਰਗਟ ਨਹੀ ਛਪੈ ॥ har kaa bhagat pragatt nahee chhapai | The devotees of the Lord are known and respected; they do not hide in secrecy. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਹਰਿ ਕੀ ਭਗਤਿ ਮੁਕਤਿ ਬਹੁ ਕਰੇ ॥ har kee bhagat mukat bahu kare | Through devotion to the Lord, many have been liberated. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਨਾਨਕ ਜਨ ਸੰਗਿ ਕੇਤੇ ਤਰੇ ॥੭॥ naanak jan sang kete tare |7| O Nanak, along with His servants, many others are saved. ||7|| - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਪਾਰਜਾਤੁ ਇਹੁ ਹਰਿ ਕੋ ਨਾਮ ॥ paarajaat ihu har ko naam | This Elysian Tree of miraculous powers is the Name of the Lord. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਕਾਮਧੇਨ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਮ ॥ kaamadhen har har gun gaam | The Khaamadhayn, the cow of miraculous powers, is the singing of the Glory of the Lord’s Name, Har, Har. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਸਭ ਤੇ ਊਤਮ ਹਰਿ ਕੀ ਕਥਾ ॥ sabh te aootam har kee kathaa | Highest of all is the Lord’s Speech. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਨਾਮੁ ਸੁਨਤ ਦਰਦ ਦੁਖ ਲਥਾ ॥ naam sunat darad dukh lathaa | Hearing the Naam, pain and sorrow are removed. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਨਾਮ ਕੀ ਮਹਿਮਾ ਸੰਤ ਰਿਦ ਵਸੈ ॥ naam kee mahimaa sant rid vasai | The Glory of the Naam abides in the hearts of His Saints. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਸੰਤ ਪ੍ਰਤਾਪਿ ਦੁਰਤੁ ਸਭੁ ਨਸੈ ॥ sant prataap durat sabh nasai | By the Saint’s kind intervention, all guilt is dispelled. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਸੰਤ ਕਾ ਸੰਗੁ ਵਡਭਾਗੀ ਪਾਈਐ ॥ sant kaa sang vaddabhaagee paaeeai | The Society of the Saints is obtained by great good fortune. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਸੰਤ ਕੀ ਸੇਵਾ ਨਾਮੁ ਧਿਆਈਐ ॥ sant kee sevaa naam dhiaaeeai | Serving the Saint, one meditates on the Naam. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਨਾਮ ਤੁਲਿ ਕਛੁ ਅਵਰੁ ਨ ਹੋਇ ॥ naam tul kachh avar na hoe | There is nothing equal to the Naam. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਨਾਨਕ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਪਾਵੈ ਜਨੁ ਕੋਇ ॥੮॥੨॥ naanak guramukh naam paavai jan koe |8|2| O Nanak, rare are those, who, as Gurmukh, obtain the Naam. ||8||2|| - Guru Arjan Dev Ji

ਪੂਜਸਿ ਨਾਹੀ ਹਰਿ ਹਰੇ ਨਾਨਕ ਨਾਮ ਅਮੋਲ ॥੧॥ poojas naahee har hare naanak naam amol |1| They are not equal to Har, Haray - O Nanak, the Lord’s Invaluable Name. ||1|| - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਅਸਟਪਦੀ ॥ asattapadee | Ashtapadee: - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਜਾਪ ਤਾਪ ਗਿਆਨ ਸਭਿ ਧਿਆਨ ॥ jaap taap giaan sabh dhiaan | Chanting, intense meditation, spiritual wisdom and all meditations; - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਖਟ ਸਾਸਤ੍ਰ ਸਿਮ੍ਰਿਤਿ ਵਖਿਆਨ ॥ khatt saasatr simrit vakhiaan | the six schools of philosophy and sermons on the scriptures; - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਜੋਗ ਅਭਿਆਸ ਕਰਮ ਧ੍ਰਮ ਕਿਰਿਆ ॥ jog abhiaas karam dhram kiriaa | the practice of Yoga and righteous conduct; - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਸਗਲ ਤਿਆਗਿ ਬਨ ਮਧੇ ਫਿਰਿਆ ॥ sagal tiaag ban madhe firiaa | the renunciation of everything and wandering around in the wilderness; - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਅਨਿਕ ਪ੍ਰਕਾਰ ਕੀਏ ਬਹੁ ਜਤਨਾ ॥ anik prakaar kee bahu jatanaa | the performance of all sorts of works; - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਪੁੰਨ ਦਾਨ ਹੋਮੇ ਬਹੁ ਰਤਨਾ ॥ pun daan home bahu ratanaa | donations to charities and offerings of jewels to fire; - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਸਰੀਰੁ ਕਟਾਇ ਹੋਮੈ ਕਰਿ ਰਾਤੀ ॥ sareer kattaae homai kar raatee | cutting the body apart and making the pieces into ceremonial fire offerings; - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਵਰਤ ਨੇਮ ਕਰੈ ਬਹੁ ਭਾਤੀ ॥ varat nem karai bahu bhaatee | keeping fasts and making vows of all sorts - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਨਹੀ ਤੁਲਿ ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮ ਬੀਚਾਰ ॥ nahee tul raam naam beechaar |
- none of these are equal to the contemplation of the Name of the Lord, - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਨਾਨਕ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਜਪੀਐ ਇਕ ਬਾਰ ॥੧॥ naanak guramukh naam japeeai ik baar |1| O Nanak, if, as Gurmukh, one chants the Naam, even once. ||1|| - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਨਉ ਖੰਡ ਪ੍ਰਿਥਮੀ ਫਿਰੈ ਚਿਰੁ ਜੀਵੈ ॥ nau khandd prithamee firai chir jeevai | You may roam over the nine continents of the world and live a very long life; - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਮਹਾ ਉਦਾਸੁ ਤਪੀਸਰੁ ਥੀਵੈ ॥ mahaa udaas tapeesar theevai | you may become a great ascetic and a master of disciplined meditation - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਅਗਨਿ ਮਾਹਿ ਹੋਮਤ ਪਰਾਨ ॥ agan maeh homat paraan | and burn yourself in fire; - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਕਨਿਕ ਅਸ੍ਵ ਹੈਵਰ ਭੂਮਿ ਦਾਨ ॥ kanik asv haivar bhoom daan | you may give away gold, horses, elephants and land; - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਨਿਉਲੀ ਕਰਮ ਕਰੈ ਬਹੁ ਆਸਨ ॥ niaulee karam karai bahu aasan | you may practice techniques of inner cleansing and all sorts of Yogic postures; - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਜੈਨ ਮਾਰਗ ਸੰਜਮ ਅਤਿ ਸਾਧਨ ॥ jain maarag sanjam at saadhan | you may adopt the self-mortifying ways of the Jains and great spiritual disciplines; - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਨਿਮਖ ਨਿਮਖ ਕਰਿ ਸਰੀਰੁ ਕਟਾਵੈ ॥ nimakh nimakh kar sareer kattaavai | piece by piece, you may cut your body apart; - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਤਉ ਭੀ ਹਉਮੈ ਮੈਲੁ ਨ ਜਾਵੈ ॥ tau bhee haumai mail na jaavai | but even so, the filth of your ego shall not depart. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਹਰਿ ਕੇ ਨਾਮ ਸਮਸਰਿ ਕਛੁ ਨਾਹਿ ॥ har ke naam samasar kachh naeh | There is nothing equal to the Name of the Lord. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਨਾਨਕ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਜਪਤ ਗਤਿ ਪਾਹਿ ॥੨॥ naanak guramukh naam japat gat paeh |2| O Nanak, as Gurmukh, chant the Naam, and obtain salvation. ||2|| - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਮਨ ਕਾਮਨਾ ਤੀਰਥ ਦੇਹ ਛੁਟੈ ॥ man kaamanaa teerath deh chhuttai | With your mind filled with desire, you may give up your body at a sacred shrine of pilgrimage; - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਗਰਬੁ ਗੁਮਾਨੁ ਨ ਮਨ ਤੇ ਹੁਟੈ ॥ garab gumaan na man te huttai | but even so, egotistical pride shall not be removed from your mind. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਸੋਚ ਕਰੈ ਦਿਨਸੁ ਅਰੁ ਰਾਤਿ ॥ soch karai dinas ar raat | You may practice cleansing day and night, - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਮਨ ਕੀ ਮੈਲੁ ਨ ਤਨ ਤੇ ਜਾਤਿ ॥ man kee mail na tan te jaat | but the filth of your mind shall not leave your body. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਇਸੁ ਦੇਹੀ ਕਉ ਬਹੁ ਸਾਧਨਾ ਕਰੈ ॥ eis dehee kau bahu saadhanaa karai | You may subject your body to all sorts of disciplines, - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਮਨ ਤੇ ਕਬਹੂ ਨ ਬਿਖਿਆ ਟਰੈ ॥ man te kabahoo na bikhiaa ttarai | but your mind will never be rid of its corruption. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਜਲਿ ਧੋਵੈ ਬਹੁ ਦੇਹ ਅਨੀਤਿ ॥ jal dhovai bahu deh aneet | You may wash this transitory body with loads of water, - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਸੁਧ ਕਹਾ ਹੋਇ ਕਾਚੀ ਭੀਤਿ ॥ sudh kahaa hoe kaachee bheet | but how can a wall of mud be washed clean? - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਮਨ ਹਰਿ ਕੇ ਨਾਮ ਕੀ ਮਹਿਮਾ ਊਚ ॥ man har ke naam kee mahimaa aooch | O my mind, the Glorious Praise of the Name of the Lord is the highest; - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਨਾਨਕ ਨਾਮਿ ਉਧਰੇ ਪਤਿਤ ਬਹੁ ਮੂਚ ॥੩॥ naanak naam udhare patit bahu mooch |3| O Nanak, the Naam has saved so many of the worst sinners. ||3|| - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਬਹੁਤੁ ਸਿਆਣਪ ਜਮ ਕਾ ਭਉ ਬਿਆਪੈ ॥ bahut siaanap jam kaa bhau biaapai | Even with great cleverness, the fear of death clings to you. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
