ਅਸਟਪਦੀ ॥ asattapadee | Ashtapadee: - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਜਹ ਮਾਤ ਪਿਤਾ ਸੁਤ ਮੀਤ ਨ ਭਾਈ ॥ jeh maat pitaa sut meet na bhaaee | Where there is no mother, father, children, friends or siblings - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਮਨ ਊਹਾ ਨਾਮੁ ਤੇਰੈ ਸੰਗਿ ਸਹਾਈ ॥ man aoohaa naam terai sang sahaaee | O my mind, there, only the Naam, the Name of the Lord, shall be with you as your help and support. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਜਹ ਮਹਾ ਭਇਆਨ ਦੂਤ ਜਮ ਦਲੈ ॥ jeh mahaa bheaan doot jam dalai | Where the great and terrible Messenger of Death shall try to crush you, - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਤਹ ਕੇਵਲ ਨਾਮੁ ਸੰਗਿ ਤੇਰੈ ਚਲੈ ॥ teh keval naam sang terai chalai | there, only the Naam shall go along with you. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਜਹ ਮੁਸਕਲ ਹੋਵੈ ਅਤਿ ਭਾਰੀ ॥ jeh musakal hovai at bhaaree | Where the obstacles are so very heavy, - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਹਰਿ ਕੋ ਨਾਮੁ ਖਿਨ ਮਾਹਿ ਉਧਾਰੀ ॥ har ko naam khin maeh udhaaree | the Name of the Lord shall rescue you in an instant. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਅਨਿਕ ਪੁਨਹਚਰਨ ਕਰਤ ਨਹੀ ਤਰੈ ॥ anik punahacharan karat nahee tarai | By performing countless religious rituals, you shall not be saved. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਹਰਿ ਕੋ ਨਾਮੁ ਕੋਟਿ ਪਾਪ ਪਰਹਰੈ ॥ har ko naam kott paap paraharai | The Name of the Lord washes off millions of sins. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਜਪਹੁ ਮਨ ਮੇਰੇ ॥ guramukh naam japahu man mere | As Gurmukh, chant the Naam, O my mind. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਨਾਨਕ ਪਾਵਹੁ ਸੂਖ ਘਨੇਰੇ ॥੧॥ naanak paavahu sookh ghanere |1| O Nanak, you shall obtain countless joys. ||1|| - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਸਗਲ ਸ੍ਰਿਸਟਿ ਕੋ ਰਾਜਾ ਦੁਖੀਆ ॥ sagal srisatt ko raajaa dukheea | The rulers of the all the world are unhappy; - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਹਰਿ ਕਾ ਨਾਮੁ ਜਪਤ ਹੋਇ ਸੁਖੀਆ ॥ har kaa naam japat hoe sukheea | one who chants the Name of the Lord becomes happy. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਲਾਖ ਕਰੋਰੀ ਬੰਧੁ ਨ ਪਰੈ ॥ laakh karoree bandh na parai | Acquiring hundreds of thousands and millions, your desires shall not be contained. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਹਰਿ ਕਾ ਨਾਮੁ ਜਪਤ ਨਿਸਤਰੈ ॥ har kaa naam japat nisatarai | Chanting the Name of the Lord, you shall find release. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਅਨਿਕ ਮਾਇਆ ਰੰਗ ਤਿਖ ਨ ਬੁਝਾਵੈ ॥ anik maaeaa rang tikh na bujhaavai | By the countless pleasures of Maya, your thirst shall not be quenched. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਹਰਿ ਕਾ ਨਾਮੁ ਜਪਤ ਆਘਾਵੈ ॥ har kaa naam japat aaghaavai | Chanting the Name of the Lord, you shall be satisfied. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਜਿਹ ਮਾਰਗਿ ਇਹੁ ਜਾਤ ਇਕੇਲਾ ॥ jih maarag ihu jaat ikelaa | Upon that path where you must go all alone, - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਤਹ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਸੰਗਿ ਹੋਤ ਸੁਹੇਲਾ ॥ teh har naam sang hot suhelaa | there, only the Lord’s Name shall go with you to sustain you. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਐਸਾ ਨਾਮੁ ਮਨ ਸਦਾ ਧਿਆਈਐ ॥ aisaa naam man sadaa dhiaaeeai | On such a Name, O my mind, meditate forever. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਨਾਨਕ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਪਰਮ ਗਤਿ ਪਾਈਐ ॥੨॥ naanak guramukh param gat paaeeai |2| O Nanak, as Gurmukh, you shall obtain the state of supreme dignity. ||2|| - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਛੂਟਤ ਨਹੀ ਕੋਟਿ ਲਖ ਬਾਹੀ ॥ chhoottat nahee kott lakh baahee | You shall not be saved by hundreds of thousands and millions of helping hands. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਨਾਮੁ ਜਪਤ ਤਹ ਪਾਰਿ ਪਰਾਹੀ ॥ naam japat teh paar paraahee | Chanting the Naam, you shall be lifted up and carried across. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਅਨਿਕ ਬਿਘਨ ਜਹ ਆਇ ਸੰਘਾਰੈ ॥ anik bighan jeh aae sanghaarai | Where countless misfortunes threaten to destroy you, - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਹਰਿ ਕਾ ਨਾਮੁ ਤਤਕਾਲ ਉਧਾਰੈ ॥ har kaa naam tatakaal udhaarai | the Name of the Lord shall rescue you in an instant. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਅਨਿਕ ਜੋਨਿ ਜਨਮੈ ਮਰਿ ਜਾਮ ॥ anik jon janamai mar jaam | Through countless incarnations, people are born and die. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਨਾਮੁ ਜਪਤ ਪਾਵੈ ਬਿਸ੍ਰਾਮ ॥ naam japat paavai bisraam | Chanting the Name of the Lord, you shall come to rest in peace. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਹਉ ਮੈਲਾ ਮਲੁ ਕਬਹੁ ਨ ਧੋਵੈ ॥ hau mailaa mal kabahu na dhovai | The ego is polluted by a filth which can never be washed off. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਹਰਿ ਕਾ ਨਾਮੁ ਕੋਟਿ ਪਾਪ ਖੋਵੈ ॥ har kaa naam kott paap khovai | The Name of the Lord erases millions of sins. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਐਸਾ ਨਾਮੁ ਜਪਹੁ ਮਨ ਰੰਗਿ ॥ aisaa naam japahu man rang | Chant such a Name with love, O my mind. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਨਾਨਕ ਪਾਈਐ ਸਾਧ ਕੈ ਸੰਗਿ ॥੩॥ naanak paaeeai saadh kai sang |3| O Nanak, it is obtained in the Company of the Holy. ||3|| - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਜਿਹ ਮਾਰਗ ਕੇ ਗਨੇ ਜਾਹਿ ਨ ਕੋਸਾ ॥ jih maarag ke gane jaeh na kosaa | On that path where the miles cannot be counted, - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਹਰਿ ਕਾ ਨਾਮੁ ਊਹਾ ਸੰਗਿ ਤੋਸਾ ॥ har kaa naam aoohaa sang tosaa | there, the Name of the Lord shall be your sustenance. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਜਿਹ ਪੈਡੈ ਮਹਾ ਅੰਧ ਗੁਬਾਰਾ ॥ jih paiddai mahaa andh gubaaraa | On that journey of total, pitch-black darkness, - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਹਰਿ ਕਾ ਨਾਮੁ ਸੰਗਿ ਉਜੀਆਰਾ ॥ har kaa naam sang ujeeaaraa | the Name of the Lord shall be the Light with you. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਜਹਾ ਪੰਥਿ ਤੇਰਾ ਕੋ ਨ ਸਿਞਾਨੂ ॥ jahaa panth teraa ko na siyaanoo | On that journey where no one knows you, - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਹਰਿ ਕਾ ਨਾਮੁ ਤਹ ਨਾਲਿ ਪਛਾਨੂ ॥ har kaa naam teh naal pachhaanoo | with the Name of the Lord, you shall be recognized. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਜਹ ਮਹਾ ਭਇਆਨ ਤਪਤਿ ਬਹੁ ਘਾਮ ॥ jeh mahaa bheaan tapat bahu ghaam | Where there is awesome and terrible heat and blazing sunshine, - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਤਹ ਹਰਿ ਕੇ ਨਾਮ ਕੀ ਤੁਮ ਊਪਰਿ ਛਾਮ ॥ teh har ke naam kee tum aoopar chhaam | there, the Name of the Lord will give you shade. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਜਹਾ ਤ੍ਰਿਖਾ ਮਨ ਤੁਝੁ ਆਕਰਖੈ ॥ jahaa trikhaa man tujh aakarakhai | Where thirst, O my mind, torments you to cry out, - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਤਹ ਨਾਨਕ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤੁ ਬਰਖੈ ॥੪॥ teh naanak har har amrit barakhai |4| there, O Nanak, the Ambrosial Name, Har, Har, shall rain down upon you. ||4|| - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਭਗਤ ਜਨਾ ਕੀ ਬਰਤਨਿ ਨਾਮੁ ॥ bhagat janaa kee baratan naam | Unto the devotee, the Naam is an article of daily use. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਸੰਤ ਜਨਾ ਕੈ ਮਨਿ ਬਿਸ੍ਰਾਮੁ ॥ sant janaa kai man bisraam | The minds of the humble Saints are at peace. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਹਰਿ ਕਾ ਨਾਮੁ ਦਾਸ ਕੀ ਓਟ ॥ har kaa naam daas kee ott | The Name of the Lord is the Support of His servants. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਹਰਿ ਕੈ ਨਾਮਿ ਉਧਰੇ ਜਨ ਕੋਟਿ ॥ har kai naam udhare jan kott | By the Name of the Lord, millions have been saved. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਹਰਿ ਜਸੁ ਕਰਤ ਸੰਤ ਦਿਨੁ ਰਾਤਿ ॥ har jas karat sant din raat | The Saints chant the Praises of the Lord, day and night. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਅਉਖਧੁ ਸਾਧ ਕਮਾਤਿ ॥ har har aaukhadh saadh kamaat | Har, Har - the Lord’s Name - the Holy use it as their healing medicine. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਹਰਿ ਜਨ ਕੈ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਨਿਧਾਨੁ ॥ har jan kai har naam nidhaan | The Lord’s Name is the treasure of the Lord’s servant. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਪਾਰਬ੍ਰਹਮਿ ਜਨ ਕੀਨੋ ਦਾਨ ॥ paarabraham jan keeno daan | The Supreme Lord God has blessed His humble servant with this gift. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਮਨ ਤਨ ਰੰਗਿ ਰਤੇ ਰੰਗ ਏਕੈ ॥ man tan rang rate rang ekai | Mind and body are imbued with ecstasy in the Love of the One Lord. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਨਾਨਕ ਜਨ ਕੈ ਬਿਰਤਿ ਬਿਬੇਕੈ ॥੫॥ naanak jan kai birat bibekai |5| O Nanak, careful and discerning understanding is the way of the Lord’s humble servant. ||5|| - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਹਰਿ ਕਾ ਨਾਮੁ ਜਨ ਕਉ ਮੁਕਤਿ ਜੁਗਤਿ ॥ har kaa naam jan kau mukat jugat | The Name of the Lord is the path of liberation for His humble servants. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਹਰਿ ਕੈ ਨਾਮਿ ਜਨ ਕਉ ਤ੍ਰਿਪਤਿ ਭੁਗਤਿ ॥ har kai naam jan kau tripat bhugat | With the food of the Name of the Lord, His servants are satisfied. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਹਰਿ ਕਾ ਨਾਮੁ ਜਨ ਕਾ ਰੂਪ ਰੰਗੁ ॥ har kaa naam jan kaa roop rang | The Name of the Lord is the beauty and delight of His servants. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਜਪਤ ਕਬ ਪਰੈ ਨ ਭੰਗੁ ॥ har naam japat kab parai na bhang | Chanting the Lord’s Name, one is never blocked by obstacles. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਹਰਿ ਕਾ ਨਾਮੁ ਜਨ ਕੀ ਵਡਿਆਈ ॥ har kaa naam jan kee vaddiaaee | The Name of the Lord is the glorious greatness of His servants. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
