ਮਾਇਆ ਬੰਧਨ ਟਿਕੈ ਨਾਹੀ ਖਿਨੁ ਖਿਨੁ ਦੁਖੁ ਸੰਤਾਏ ॥ maaeaa bandhan ttikai naahee khin khin dukh santaae | Bound by Maya, the mind is not stable. Each and every moment, it suffers in pain. - Guru Amardas Ji
ਨਾਨਕ ਮਾਇਆ ਕਾ ਦੁਖੁ ਤਦੇ ਚੂਕੈ ਜਾ ਗੁਰਸਬਦੀ ਚਿਤੁ ਲਾਏ ॥੩॥ naanak maaeaa kaa dukh tade chookai jaa gurasabadee chit laae |3| O Nanak, the pain of Maya is taken away by focusing one’s consciousness on the Word of the Guru’s Shabad. ||3|| - Guru Amardas Ji
ਮਨਮੁਖ ਮੁਗਧ ਗਾਵਾਰੁ ਪਿਰਾ ਜੀਉ ਸਬਦੁ ਮਨਿ ਨ ਵਸਾਏ ॥ manamukh mugadh gaavaar piraa jeeo sabad man na vasaae | The self-willed manmukhs are foolish and crazy, O my dear; they do not enshrine the Shabad within their minds. - Guru Amardas Ji
ਮਾਇਆ ਕਾ ਭ੍ਰਮੁ ਅੰਧੁ ਪਿਰਾ ਜੀਉ ਹਰਿ ਮਾਰਗੁ ਕਿਉ ਪਾਏ ॥ maaeaa kaa bhram andh piraa jeeo har maarag kiau paae | The delusion of Maya has made them blind, O my dear; how can they find the Way of the Lord? - Guru Amardas Ji
ਕਿਉ ਮਾਰਗੁ ਪਾਏ ਬਿਨੁ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਭਾਏ ਮਨਮੁਖਿ ਆਪੁ ਗਣਾਏ ॥ kiau maarag paae bin satigur bhaae manamukh aap ganaae | How can they find the Way, without the Will of the True Guru? The manmukhs foolishly display themselves. - Guru Amardas Ji
ਹਰਿ ਕੇ ਚਾਕਰ ਸਦਾ ਸੁਹੇਲੇ ਗੁਰ ਚਰਣੀ ਚਿਤੁ ਲਾਏ ॥ har ke chaakar sadaa suhele gur charanee chit laae | The Lord’s servants are forever comfortable. They focus their consciousness on the Guru’s Feet. - Guru Amardas Ji
ਜਿਸ ਨੋ ਹਰਿ ਜੀਉ ਕਰੇ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਸਦਾ ਹਰਿ ਕੇ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਏ ॥ jis no har jeeo kare kirapaa sadaa har ke gun gaae | Those unto whom the Lord shows His Mercy, sing the Glorious Praises of the Lord forever. - Guru Amardas Ji
ਨਾਨਕ ਨਾਮੁ ਰਤਨੁ ਜਗਿ ਲਾਹਾ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਆਪਿ ਬੁਝਾਏ ॥੪॥੫॥੭॥ naanak naam ratan jag laahaa guramukh aap bujhaae |4|5|7| O Nanak, the jewel of the Naam, the Name of the Lord, is the only profit in this world. The Lord Himself imparts this understanding to the Gurmukh. ||4||5||7|| - Guru Amardas Ji

ਮੇਰੈ ਮਨਿ ਬੈਰਾਗੁ ਭਇਆ ਜੀਉ ਕਿਉ ਦੇਖਾ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਦਾਤੇ ॥ merai man bairaag bheaa jeeo kiau dekhaa prabh daate | My mind has become sad and depressed; how can I see God, the Great Giver? - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਮੇਰੇ ਮੀਤ ਸਖਾ ਹਰਿ ਜੀਉ ਗੁਰ ਪੁਰਖ ਬਿਧਾਤੇ ॥ mere meet sakhaa har jeeo gur purakh bidhaate | My Friend and Companion is the Dear Lord, the Guru, the Architect of Destiny. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਪੁਰਖੋ ਬਿਧਾਤਾ ਏਕੁ ਸ੍ਰੀਧਰੁ ਕਿਉ ਮਿਲਹ ਤੁਝੈ ਉਡੀਣੀਆ ॥ purakho bidhaataa ek sreedhar kiau milah tujhai uddeeneea | The One Lord, the Architect of Destiny, is the Master of the Goddess of Wealth; how can I, in my sadness, meet You? - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਕਰ ਕਰਹਿ ਸੇਵਾ ਸੀਸੁ ਚਰਣੀ ਮਨਿ ਆਸ ਦਰਸ ਨਿਮਾਣੀਆ ॥ kar kareh sevaa sees charanee man aas daras nimaaneea | My hands serve You, and my head is at Your Feet. My mind, dishonored, yearns for the Blessed Vision of Your Darshan. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਸਾਸਿ ਸਾਸਿ ਨ ਘੜੀ ਵਿਸਰੈ ਪਲੁ ਮੂਰਤੁ ਦਿਨੁ ਰਾਤੇ ॥ saas saas na gharree visarai pal moorat din raate | With each and every breath, I think of You, day and night; I do not forget You, for an instant, even for a moment. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਨਾਨਕ ਸਾਰਿੰਗ ਜਿਉ ਪਿਆਸੇ ਕਿਉ ਮਿਲੀਐ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਦਾਤੇ ॥੧॥ naanak saaring jiau piaase kiau mileeai prabh daate |1| O Nanak, I am thirsty, like the rainbird; how can I meet God, the Great Giver? ||1|| - Guru Arjan Dev Ji

ਮੇਰਾ ਮਨੁ ਤਨੁ ਮੋਹਿ ਲੀਆ ਜੀਉ ਦੇਖਿ ਚਲਤ ਤੁਮਾਰੇ ॥ meraa man tan mohi leea jeeo dekh chalat tumaare | My mind and body are enticed, beholding Your wondrous play. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਚਲਤਾ ਤੁਮਾਰੇ ਦੇਖਿ ਮੋਹੀ ਉਦਾਸ ਧਨ ਕਿਉ ਧੀਰਏ ॥ chalataa tumaare dekh mohee udaas dhan kiau dheere | Beholding Your wondrous play, I am enticed; but how can the sad, forlorn bride find contentment? - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਗੁਣਵੰਤ ਨਾਹ ਦਇਆਲੁ ਬਾਲਾ ਸਰਬ ਗੁਣ ਭਰਪੂਰਏ ॥ gunavant naah deaal baalaa sarab gun bharapoore | My Lord is Meritorious, Merciful and Eternally Young; He is overflowing with all excellences. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਪਿਰ ਦੋਸੁ ਨਾਹੀ ਸੁਖਹ ਦਾਤੇ ਹਉ ਵਿਛੁੜੀ ਬੁਰਿਆਰੇ ॥ pir dos naahee sukhah daate hau vichhurree buriaare | The fault is not with my Husband Lord, the Giver of peace; I am separated from Him by my own mistakes. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਬਿਨਵੰਤਿ ਨਾਨਕ ਦਇਆ ਧਾਰਹੁ ਘਰਿ ਆਵਹੁ ਨਾਹ ਪਿਆਰੇ ॥੨॥ binavant naanak deaa dhaarahu ghar aavahu naah piaare |2| Prays Nanak, please be merciful to me, and return home, O my Beloved Husband Lord. ||2|| - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਹਉ ਮਨੁ ਅਰਪੀ ਸਭੁ ਤਨੁ ਅਰਪੀ ਅਰਪੀ ਸਭਿ ਦੇਸਾ ॥ hau man arapee sabh tan arapee arapee sabh desaa | I surrender my mind, I surrender my whole body; I surrender all my lands. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਹਉ ਸਿਰੁ ਅਰਪੀ ਤਿਸੁ ਮੀਤ ਪਿਆਰੇ ਜੋ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਦੇਇ ਸਦੇਸਾ ॥ hau sir arapee tis meet piaare jo prabh dee sadesaa | I surrender my head to that beloved friend, who brings me news of God. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਅਰਪਿਆ ਤ ਸੀਸੁ ਸੁਥਾਨਿ ਗੁਰ ਪਹਿ ਸੰਗਿ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਿਖਾਇਆ ॥ arapiaa ta sees suthaan gur peh sang prabhoo dikhaaeaa | I have offered my head to the Guru, the most exalted; He has shown me that God is with me. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਖਿਨ ਮਾਹਿ ਸਗਲਾ ਦੂਖੁ ਮਿਟਿਆ ਮਨਹੁ ਚਿੰਦਿਆ ਪਾਇਆ ॥ khin maeh sagalaa dookh mittiaa manahu chindiaa paaeaa | In an instant, all suffering is removed. I have obtained all my mind’s desires. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਦਿਨੁ ਰੈਣਿ ਰਲੀਆ ਕਰੈ ਕਾਮਣਿ ਮਿਟੇ ਸਗਲ ਅੰਦੇਸਾ ॥ din rain raleea karai kaaman mitte sagal andesaa | Day and night, the soul-bride makes merry; all her anxieties are erased. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਬਿਨਵੰਤਿ ਨਾਨਕੁ ਕੰਤੁ ਮਿਲਿਆ ਲੋੜਤੇ ਹਮ ਜੈਸਾ ॥੩॥ binavant naanak kant miliaa lorrate ham jaisaa |3| Prays Nanak, I have met the Husband Lord of my longing. ||3|| - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਮੇਰੈ ਮਨਿ ਅਨਦੁ ਭਇਆ ਜੀਉ ਵਜੀ ਵਾਧਾਈ ॥ merai man anad bheaa jeeo vajee vaadhaaee | My mind is filled with bliss, and congratulations are pouring in. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਘਰਿ ਲਾਲੁ ਆਇਆ ਪਿਆਰਾ ਸਭ ਤਿਖਾ ਬੁਝਾਈ ॥ ghar laal aaeaa piaaraa sabh tikhaa bujhaaee | My Darling Beloved has come home to me, and all my desires have been satisfied. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਮਿਲਿਆ ਤ ਲਾਲੁ ਗੁਪਾਲੁ ਠਾਕੁਰੁ ਸਖੀ ਮੰਗਲੁ ਗਾਇਆ ॥ miliaa ta laal gupaal tthaakur sakhee mangal gaaeaa | I have met my Sweet Lord and Master of the Universe, and my companions sing the songs of joy. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਸਭ ਮੀਤ ਬੰਧਪ ਹਰਖੁ ਉਪਜਿਆ ਦੂਤ ਥਾਉ ਗਵਾਇਆ ॥ sabh meet bandhap harakh upajiaa doot thaau gavaaeaa | All my friends and relatives are happy, and all traces of my enemies have been removed. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਅਨਹਤ ਵਾਜੇ ਵਜਹਿ ਘਰ ਮਹਿ ਪਿਰ ਸੰਗਿ ਸੇਜ ਵਿਛਾਈ ॥ anahat vaaje vajeh ghar meh pir sang sej vichhaaee | The unstruck melody vibrates in my home, and the bed has been made up for my Beloved. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
