ਤਤੁ ਨ ਚੀਨਹਿ ਬੰਨਹਿ ਪੰਡ ਪਰਾਲਾ ॥੨॥ tat na cheeneh baneh pandd paraalaa |2| They do not understand the essence of reality, and they gather their worthless bundles of straw. ||2|| - Guru Amardas Ji
ਮਨਮੁਖ ਅਗਿਆਨਿ ਕੁਮਾਰਗਿ ਪਾਏ ॥ manamukh agiaan kumaarag paae | The self-willed manmukhs, in ignorance, take the path of evil. - Guru Amardas Ji
ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਬਿਸਾਰਿਆ ਬਹੁ ਕਰਮ ਦ੍ਰਿੜਾਏ ॥ har naam bisaariaa bahu karam drirraae | They forget the Lord’s Name, and in its place, they establish all sorts of rituals. - Guru Amardas Ji
ਭਵਜਲਿ ਡੂਬੇ ਦੂਜੈ ਭਾਏ ॥੩॥ bhavajal ddoobe doojai bhaae |3| They drown in the terrifying world-ocean, in the love of duality. ||3|| - Guru Amardas Ji
ਮਾਇਆ ਕਾ ਮੁਹਤਾਜੁ ਪੰਡਿਤੁ ਕਹਾਵੈ ॥ maaeaa kaa muhataaj panddit kahaavai | Driven crazy, infatuated by Maya, they call themselves Pandits - religious scholars; - Guru Amardas Ji
ਬਿਖਿਆ ਰਾਤਾ ਬਹੁਤੁ ਦੁਖੁ ਪਾਵੈ ॥ bikhiaa raataa bahut dukh paavai | stained with corruption, they suffer terrible pain. - Guru Amardas Ji
ਜਮ ਕਾ ਗਲਿ ਜੇਵੜਾ ਨਿਤ ਕਾਲੁ ਸੰਤਾਵੈ ॥੪॥ jam kaa gal jevarraa nit kaal santaavai |4| The noose of the Messenger of Death is around their necks; they are constantly tormented by death. ||4|| - Guru Amardas Ji
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਜਮਕਾਲੁ ਨੇੜਿ ਨ ਆਵੈ ॥ guramukh jamakaal nerr na aavai | The Messenger of Death does not even approach the Gurmukhs. - Guru Amardas Ji
ਹਉਮੈ ਦੂਜਾ ਸਬਦਿ ਜਲਾਵੈ ॥ haumai doojaa sabad jalaavai | Through the Word of the Shabad, they burn away their ego and duality. - Guru Amardas Ji
ਨਾਮੇ ਰਾਤੇ ਹਰਿ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਵੈ ॥੫॥ naame raate har gun gaavai |5| Attuned to the Name, they sing the Glorious Praises of the Lord. ||5|| - Guru Amardas Ji
ਮਾਇਆ ਦਾਸੀ ਭਗਤਾ ਕੀ ਕਾਰ ਕਮਾਵੈ ॥ maaeaa daasee bhagataa kee kaar kamaavai | Maya is the slave of the Lord’s devotees; it works for them. - Guru Amardas Ji
ਚਰਣੀ ਲਾਗੈ ਤਾ ਮਹਲੁ ਪਾਵੈ ॥ charanee laagai taa mehal paavai | One who falls at their feet attains the Mansion of the Lord’s Presence. - Guru Amardas Ji
ਸਦ ਹੀ ਨਿਰਮਲੁ ਸਹਜਿ ਸਮਾਵੈ ॥੬॥ sad hee niramal sehaj samaavai |6| He is forever immaculate; he is absorbed in intuitive peace. ||6|| - Guru Amardas Ji
ਹਰਿ ਕਥਾ ਸੁਣਹਿ ਸੇ ਧਨਵੰਤ ਦਿਸਹਿ ਜੁਗ ਮਾਹੀ ॥ har kathaa suneh se dhanavant diseh jug maahee | Those who listen to the Lord’s Sermon are seen to be the wealthy people in this world. - Guru Amardas Ji
ਤਿਨ ਕਉ ਸਭਿ ਨਿਵਹਿ ਅਨਦਿਨੁ ਪੂਜ ਕਰਾਹੀ ॥ tin kau sabh niveh anadin pooj karaahee | Everyone bows down to them, and adores them, night and day. - Guru Amardas Ji
ਸਹਜੇ ਗੁਣ ਰਵਹਿ ਸਾਚੇ ਮਨ ਮਾਹੀ ॥੭॥ sahaje gun raveh saache man maahee |7| They intuitively savor the Glories of the True Lord within their minds. ||7|| - Guru Amardas Ji
ਪੂਰੈ ਸਤਿਗੁਰਿ ਸਬਦੁ ਸੁਣਾਇਆ ॥ poorai satigur sabad sunaaeaa | The Perfect True Guru has revealed the Shabad; - Guru Amardas Ji
ਤ੍ਰੈ ਗੁਣ ਮੇਟੇ ਚਉਥੈ ਚਿਤੁ ਲਾਇਆ ॥ trai gun mette chauthai chit laaeaa | it eradicates the three qualities, and attunes the consciousness to the fourth state. - Guru Amardas Ji
ਨਾਨਕ ਹਉਮੈ ਮਾਰਿ ਬ੍ਰਹਮ ਮਿਲਾਇਆ ॥੮॥੪॥ naanak haumai maar braham milaaeaa |8|4| O Nanak, subduing egotism, one is absorbed into God. ||8||4|| - Guru Amardas Ji

ਬ੍ਰਹਮਾ ਵੇਦੁ ਪੜੈ ਵਾਦੁ ਵਖਾਣੈ ॥ brahamaa ved parrai vaad vakhaanai | Brahma studied the Vedas, but these lead only to debates and disputes. - Guru Amardas Ji
ਅੰਤਰਿ ਤਾਮਸੁ ਆਪੁ ਨ ਪਛਾਣੈ ॥ antar taamas aap na pachhaanai | He is filled with darkness; he does not understand himself. - Guru Amardas Ji
ਤਾ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਪਾਏ ਗੁਰਸਬਦੁ ਵਖਾਣੈ ॥੧॥ taa prabh paae gurasabad vakhaanai |1| And yet, if he chants the Word of the Guru’s Shabad, he finds God. ||1|| - Guru Amardas Ji
ਗੁਰ ਸੇਵਾ ਕਰਉ ਫਿਰਿ ਕਾਲੁ ਨ ਖਾਇ ॥ gur sevaa krau fir kaal na khaae | So serve the Guru, and you shall not be consumed by death. - Guru Amardas Ji
ਮਨਮੁਖ ਖਾਧੇ ਦੂਜੈ ਭਾਇ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥ manamukh khaadhe doojai bhaae |1| rahaau | The self-willed manmukhs have been consumed by the love of duality. ||1||Pause|| - Guru Amardas Ji
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਪ੍ਰਾਣੀ ਅਪਰਾਧੀ ਸੀਧੇ ॥ guramukh praanee aparaadhee seedhe | Becoming Gurmukh, the sinful mortals are purified. - Guru Amardas Ji
ਗੁਰ ਕੈ ਸਬਦਿ ਅੰਤਰਿ ਸਹਜਿ ਰੀਧੇ ॥ gur kai sabad antar sehaj reedhe | Through the Word of the Guru’s Shabad, they find intuitive peace and poise deep within. - Guru Amardas Ji
ਮੇਰਾ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਪਾਇਆ ਗੁਰ ਕੈ ਸਬਦਿ ਸੀਧੇ ॥੨॥ meraa prabh paaeaa gur kai sabad seedhe |2| I have found my God, through the Guru’s Shabad, and I have been reformed. ||2|| - Guru Amardas Ji
ਸਤਿਗੁਰਿ ਮੇਲੇ ਪ੍ਰਭਿ ਆਪਿ ਮਿਲਾਏ ॥ satigur mele prabh aap milaae | God Himself unites us in Union with the True Guru, - Guru Amardas Ji
ਮੇਰੇ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਸਾਚੇ ਕੈ ਮਨਿ ਭਾਏ ॥ mere prabh saache kai man bhaae | when we become pleasing to the Mind of my True God. - Guru Amardas Ji
ਹਰਿ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਵਹਿ ਸਹਜਿ ਸੁਭਾਏ ॥੩॥ har gun gaaveh sehaj subhaae |3| They sing the Glorious Praises of the Lord, in the poise of celestial peace. ||3|| - Guru Amardas Ji
ਬਿਨੁ ਗੁਰ ਸਾਚੇ ਭਰਮਿ ਭੁਲਾਏ ॥ bin gur saache bharam bhulaae | Without the True Guru, they are deluded by doubt. - Guru Amardas Ji
ਮਨਮੁਖ ਅੰਧੇ ਸਦਾ ਬਿਖੁ ਖਾਏ ॥ manamukh andhe sadaa bikh khaae | The blind, self-willed manmukhs constantly eat poison. - Guru Amardas Ji
ਜਮ ਡੰਡੁ ਸਹਹਿ ਸਦਾ ਦੁਖੁ ਪਾਏ ॥੪॥ jam ddandd saheh sadaa dukh paae |4| They are beaten by the Messenger of Death with his rod, and they suffer in constant pain. ||4|| - Guru Amardas Ji
ਜਮੂਆ ਨ ਜੋਹੈ ਹਰਿ ਕੀ ਸਰਣਾਈ ॥ jamooaa na johai har kee saranaaee | The Messenger of Death does not catch sight of those who enter the Sanctuary of the Lord. - Guru Amardas Ji
ਹਉਮੈ ਮਾਰਿ ਸਚਿ ਲਿਵ ਲਾਈ ॥ haumai maar sach liv laaee | Subduing egotism, they lovingly center their consciousness on the True Lord. - Guru Amardas Ji
ਸਦਾ ਰਹੈ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮਿ ਲਿਵ ਲਾਈ ॥੫॥ sadaa rahai har naam liv laaee |5| They keep their consciousness constantly focused on the Lord’s Name. ||5|| - Guru Amardas Ji
ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਸੇਵਹਿ ਸੇ ਜਨ ਨਿਰਮਲ ਪਵਿਤਾ ॥ satigur seveh se jan niramal pavitaa | Those humble beings who serve the True Guru are pure and immaculate. - Guru Amardas Ji
ਮਨ ਸਿਉ ਮਨੁ ਮਿਲਾਇ ਸਭੁ ਜਗੁ ਜੀਤਾ ॥ man siau man milaae sabh jag jeetaa | Merging their minds into the Mind, they conquer the entire world. - Guru Amardas Ji
ਇਨ ਬਿਧਿ ਕੁਸਲੁ ਤੇਰੈ ਮੇਰੇ ਮੀਤਾ ॥੬॥ ein bidh kusal terai mere meetaa |6| In this way, you too shall find happiness, O my friend. ||6|| - Guru Amardas Ji
ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਸੇਵੇ ਸੋ ਫਲੁ ਪਾਏ ॥ satiguroo seve so fal paae | Those who serve the True Guru are blessed with fruitful rewards. - Guru Amardas Ji
ਹਿਰਦੈ ਨਾਮੁ ਵਿਚਹੁ ਆਪੁ ਗਵਾਏ ॥ hiradai naam vichahu aap gavaae | The Naam, the Name of the Lord, abides in their hearts; selfishness and conceit depart from within them. - Guru Amardas Ji
ਅਨਹਦ ਬਾਣੀ ਸਬਦੁ ਵਜਾਏ ॥੭॥ anahad baanee sabad vajaae |7| The unstruck melody of the Shabad vibrates for them. ||7|| - Guru Amardas Ji
ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਤੇ ਕਵਨੁ ਕਵਨੁ ਨ ਸੀਧੋ ਮੇਰੇ ਭਾਈ ॥ satigur te kavan kavan na seedho mere bhaaee | Who - who has not been purified by the True Guru, O my Siblings of Destiny? - Guru Amardas Ji
ਭਗਤੀ ਸੀਧੇ ਦਰਿ ਸੋਭਾ ਪਾਈ ॥ bhagatee seedhe dar sobhaa paaee | The devotees are purified, and honored in His Court. - Guru Amardas Ji
ਨਾਨਕ ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮਿ ਵਡਿਆਈ ॥੮॥੫॥ naanak raam naam vaddiaaee |8|5| O Nanak, greatness is in the Lord’s Name. ||8||5|| - Guru Amardas Ji

ਬੰਧਨ ਨ ਤੂਟਹਿ ਮੁਕਤਿ ਨ ਪਾਇ ॥ bandhan na tootteh mukat na paae | Their bonds are not broken, and they do not obtain liberation. - Guru Amardas Ji
ਮੁਕਤਿ ਦਾਤਾ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਜੁਗ ਮਾਹਿ ॥੧॥ mukat daataa satigur jug maeh |1| The True Guru is the Bestower of liberation in this age. ||1|| - Guru Amardas Ji
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਪ੍ਰਾਣੀ ਭਰਮੁ ਗਵਾਇ ॥ guramukh praanee bharam gavaae | Those mortals who become Gurmukh give up their doubts. - Guru Amardas Ji
ਸਹਜ ਧੁਨਿ ਉਪਜੈ ਹਰਿ ਲਿਵ ਲਾਇ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥ sehaj dhun upajai har liv laae |1| rahaau | The celestial music wells up, when they lovingly attune their consciousness to the Lord. ||1||Pause|| - Guru Amardas Ji
