ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਵਿਚਹੁ ਹਉਮੈ ਜਾਇ ॥ guramukh vichahu haumai jaae | The Gurmukh eradicates egotism from within. - Guru Amardas Ji
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਮੈਲੁ ਨ ਲਾਗੈ ਆਇ ॥ guramukh mail na laagai aae | No filth sticks to the Gurmukh. - Guru Amardas Ji
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਵਸੈ ਮਨਿ ਆਇ ॥੨॥ guramukh naam vasai man aae |2| The Naam, the Name of the Lord, comes to dwell within the mind of the Gurmukh. ||2|| - Guru Amardas Ji
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਕਰਮ ਧਰਮ ਸਚਿ ਹੋਈ ॥ guramukh karam dharam sach hoee | Through karma and Dharma, good actions and righteous faith, the Gurmukh becomes true. - Guru Amardas Ji
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਅਹੰਕਾਰੁ ਜਲਾਏ ਦੋਈ ॥ guramukh ahankaar jalaae doee | The Gurmukh burns away egotism and duality. - Guru Amardas Ji
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਨਾਮਿ ਰਤੇ ਸੁਖੁ ਹੋਈ ॥੩॥ guramukh naam rate sukh hoee |3| The Gurmukh is attuned to the Naam, and is at peace. ||3|| - Guru Amardas Ji
ਆਪਣਾ ਮਨੁ ਪਰਬੋਧਹੁ ਬੂਝਹੁ ਸੋਈ ॥ aapanaa man parabodhahu boojhahu soee | Instruct your own mind, and understand Him. - Guru Amardas Ji
ਲੋਕ ਸਮਝਾਵਹੁ ਸੁਣੇ ਨ ਕੋਈ ॥ lok samajhaavahu sune na koee | You may preach to other people, but no one will listen. - Guru Amardas Ji
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਸਮਝਹੁ ਸਦਾ ਸੁਖੁ ਹੋਈ ॥੪॥ guramukh samajhahu sadaa sukh hoee |4| The Gurmukh understands, and is always at peace. ||4|| - Guru Amardas Ji
ਮਨਮੁਖਿ ਡੰਫੁ ਬਹੁਤੁ ਚਤੁਰਾਈ ॥ manamukh ddanf bahut chaturaaee | The self-willed manmukhs are such clever hypocrites. - Guru Amardas Ji
ਜੋ ਕਿਛੁ ਕਮਾਵੈ ਸੁ ਥਾਇ ਨ ਪਾਈ ॥ jo kichh kamaavai su thaae na paaee | No matter what they do, it is not acceptable. - Guru Amardas Ji
ਆਵੈ ਜਾਵੈ ਠਉਰ ਨ ਕਾਈ ॥੫॥ aavai jaavai tthaur na kaaee |5| They come and go in reincarnation, and find no place of rest. ||5|| - Guru Amardas Ji
ਮਨਮੁਖ ਕਰਮ ਕਰੇ ਬਹੁਤੁ ਅਭਿਮਾਨਾ ॥ manamukh karam kare bahut abhimaanaa | The manmukhs perform their rituals, but they are totally selfish and conceited. - Guru Amardas Ji
ਬਗ ਜਿਉ ਲਾਇ ਬਹੈ ਨਿਤ ਧਿਆਨਾ ॥ bag jiau laae bahai nit dhiaanaa | They sit there, like storks, pretending to meditate. - Guru Amardas Ji
ਜਮਿ ਪਕੜਿਆ ਤਬ ਹੀ ਪਛੁਤਾਨਾ ॥੬॥ jam pakarriaa tab hee pachhutaanaa |6| Caught by the Messenger of Death, they shall regret and repent in the end. ||6|| - Guru Amardas Ji
ਬਿਨੁ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਸੇਵੇ ਮੁਕਤਿ ਨ ਹੋਈ ॥ bin satigur seve mukat na hoee | Without serving the True Guru, liberation is not obtained. - Guru Amardas Ji
ਗੁਰ ਪਰਸਾਦੀ ਮਿਲੈ ਹਰਿ ਸੋਈ ॥ gur parasaadee milai har soee | By Guru’s Grace, one meets the Lord. - Guru Amardas Ji
ਗੁਰੁ ਦਾਤਾ ਜੁਗ ਚਾਰੇ ਹੋਈ ॥੭॥ gur daataa jug chaare hoee |7| The Guru is the Great Giver, throughout the four ages. ||7|| - Guru Amardas Ji
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਜਾਤਿ ਪਤਿ ਨਾਮੇ ਵਡਿਆਈ ॥ guramukh jaat pat naame vaddiaaee | For the Gurmukh, the Naam is social status, honor and glorious greatness. - Guru Amardas Ji
ਸਾਇਰ ਕੀ ਪੁਤ੍ਰੀ ਬਿਦਾਰਿ ਗਵਾਈ ॥ saaeir kee putree bidaar gavaaee | Maya, the daughter of the ocean, has been slain. - Guru Amardas Ji
ਨਾਨਕ ਬਿਨੁ ਨਾਵੈ ਝੂਠੀ ਚਤੁਰਾਈ ॥੮॥੨॥ naanak bin naavai jhootthee chaturaaee |8|2| O Nanak, without the Name, all clever tricks are false. ||8||2|| - Guru Amardas Ji

ਇਸੁ ਜੁਗ ਕਾ ਧਰਮੁ ਪੜਹੁ ਤੁਮ ਭਾਈ ॥ eis jug kaa dharam parrahu tum bhaaee | Learn the Dharma of this age, O Siblings of Destiny; - Guru Amardas Ji
ਪੂਰੈ ਗੁਰਿ ਸਭ ਸੋਝੀ ਪਾਈ ॥ poorai gur sabh sojhee paaee | all understanding is obtained from the Perfect Guru. - Guru Amardas Ji
ਐਥੈ ਅਗੈ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਸਖਾਈ ॥੧॥ aithai agai har naam sakhaaee |1| Here and hereafter, the Lord’s Name is our Companion. ||1|| - Guru Amardas Ji
ਰਾਮ ਪੜਹੁ ਮਨਿ ਕਰਹੁ ਬੀਚਾਰੁ ॥ raam parrahu man karahu beechaar | Learn of the Lord, and contemplate Him in your mind. - Guru Amardas Ji
ਗੁਰ ਪਰਸਾਦੀ ਮੈਲੁ ਉਤਾਰੁ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥ gur parasaadee mail utaar |1| rahaau | By Guru’s Grace, your filth shall be washed away. ||1||Pause|| - Guru Amardas Ji
ਵਾਦਿ ਵਿਰੋਧਿ ਨ ਪਾਇਆ ਜਾਇ ॥ vaad virodh na paaeaa jaae | Through argument and debate, He cannot be found. - Guru Amardas Ji
ਮਨੁ ਤਨੁ ਫੀਕਾ ਦੂਜੈ ਭਾਇ ॥ man tan feekaa doojai bhaae | The mind and body are made insipid through the love of duality. - Guru Amardas Ji
ਗੁਰ ਕੈ ਸਬਦਿ ਸਚਿ ਲਿਵ ਲਾਇ ॥੨॥ gur kai sabad sach liv laae |2| Through the Word of the Guru’s Shabad, lovingly attune yourself to the True Lord. ||2|| - Guru Amardas Ji
ਹਉਮੈ ਮੈਲਾ ਇਹੁ ਸੰਸਾਰਾ ॥ haumai mailaa ihu sansaaraa | This world is polluted with egotism. - Guru Amardas Ji
ਨਿਤ ਤੀਰਥਿ ਨਾਵੈ ਨ ਜਾਇ ਅਹੰਕਾਰਾ ॥ nit teerath naavai na jaae ahankaaraa | By taking cleansing baths daily at sacred shrines of pilgrimage, egotism is not eliminated. - Guru Amardas Ji
ਬਿਨੁ ਗੁਰ ਭੇਟੇ ਜਮੁ ਕਰੇ ਖੁਆਰਾ ॥੩॥ bin gur bhette jam kare khuaaraa |3| Without meeting the Guru, they are tortured by Death. ||3|| - Guru Amardas Ji
ਸੋ ਜਨੁ ਸਾਚਾ ਜਿ ਹਉਮੈ ਮਾਰੈ ॥ so jan saachaa ji haumai maarai | Those humble beings are true, who conquer their ego. - Guru Amardas Ji
ਗੁਰ ਕੈ ਸਬਦਿ ਪੰਚ ਸੰਘਾਰੈ ॥ gur kai sabad panch sanghaarai | Through the Word of the Guru’s Shabad, they conquer the five thieves. - Guru Amardas Ji
ਆਪਿ ਤਰੈ ਸਗਲੇ ਕੁਲ ਤਾਰੈ ॥੪॥ aap tarai sagale kul taarai |4| They save themselves, and save all their generations as well. ||4|| - Guru Amardas Ji
ਮਾਇਆ ਮੋਹਿ ਨਟਿ ਬਾਜੀ ਪਾਈ ॥ maaeaa mohi natt baajee paaee | The Actor has staged the drama of emotional attachment to Maya. - Guru Amardas Ji
ਮਨਮੁਖ ਅੰਧ ਰਹੇ ਲਪਟਾਈ ॥ manamukh andh rahe lapattaaee | The self-willed manmukhs cling blindly to it. - Guru Amardas Ji
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਅਲਿਪਤ ਰਹੇ ਲਿਵ ਲਾਈ ॥੫॥ guramukh alipat rahe liv laaee |5| The Gurmukhs remain detached, and lovingly attune themselves to the Lord. ||5|| - Guru Amardas Ji
ਬਹੁਤੇ ਭੇਖ ਕਰੈ ਭੇਖਧਾਰੀ ॥ bahute bhekh karai bhekhadhaaree | The disguisers put on their various disguises. - Guru Amardas Ji
ਅੰਤਰਿ ਤਿਸਨਾ ਫਿਰੈ ਅਹੰਕਾਰੀ ॥ antar tisanaa firai ahankaaree | Desire rages within them, and they carry on egotistically. - Guru Amardas Ji
ਆਪੁ ਨ ਚੀਨੈ ਬਾਜੀ ਹਾਰੀ ॥੬॥ aap na cheenai baajee haaree |6| They do not understand themselves, and they lose the game of life. ||6|| - Guru Amardas Ji
ਕਾਪੜ ਪਹਿਰਿ ਕਰੇ ਚਤੁਰਾਈ ॥ kaaparr pahir kare chaturaaee | Putting on religious robes, they act so clever, - Guru Amardas Ji
ਮਾਇਆ ਮੋਹਿ ਅਤਿ ਭਰਮਿ ਭੁਲਾਈ ॥ maaeaa mohi at bharam bhulaaee | but they are totally deluded by doubt and emotional attachment to Maya. - Guru Amardas Ji
ਬਿਨੁ ਗੁਰ ਸੇਵੇ ਬਹੁਤੁ ਦੁਖੁ ਪਾਈ ॥੭॥ bin gur seve bahut dukh paaee |7| Without serving the Guru, they suffer in terrible pain. ||7|| - Guru Amardas Ji
ਨਾਮਿ ਰਤੇ ਸਦਾ ਬੈਰਾਗੀ ॥ naam rate sadaa bairaagee | Those who are attuned to the Naam, the Name of the Lord, remain detached forever. - Guru Amardas Ji
ਗ੍ਰਿਹੀ ਅੰਤਰਿ ਸਾਚਿ ਲਿਵ ਲਾਗੀ ॥ grihee antar saach liv laagee | Even as householders, they lovingly attune themselves to the True Lord. - Guru Amardas Ji
ਨਾਨਕ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਸੇਵਹਿ ਸੇ ਵਡਭਾਗੀ ॥੮॥੩॥ naanak satigur seveh se vaddabhaagee |8|3| O Nanak, those who serve the True Guru are blessed and very fortunate. ||8||3|| - Guru Amardas Ji

ਬ੍ਰਹਮਾ ਮੂਲੁ ਵੇਦ ਅਭਿਆਸਾ ॥ brahamaa mool ved abhiaasaa | Brahma is the founder of the study of the Vedas. - Guru Amardas Ji
ਤਿਸ ਤੇ ਉਪਜੇ ਦੇਵ ਮੋਹ ਪਿਆਸਾ ॥ tis te upaje dev moh piaasaa | From him emanated the gods, enticed by desire. - Guru Amardas Ji
ਤ੍ਰੈ ਗੁਣ ਭਰਮੇ ਨਾਹੀ ਨਿਜ ਘਰਿ ਵਾਸਾ ॥੧॥ trai gun bharame naahee nij ghar vaasaa |1| They wander in the three qualities, and they do not dwell within their own home. ||1|| - Guru Amardas Ji
ਹਮ ਹਰਿ ਰਾਖੇ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਮਿਲਾਇਆ ॥ ham har raakhe satiguroo milaaeaa | The Lord has saved me; I have met the True Guru. - Guru Amardas Ji
ਅਨਦਿਨੁ ਭਗਤਿ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਦ੍ਰਿੜਾਇਆ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥ anadin bhagat har naam drirraaeaa |1| rahaau | He has implanted devotional worship of the Lord’s Name, night and day. ||1||Pause|| - Guru Amardas Ji
ਤ੍ਰੈ ਗੁਣ ਬਾਣੀ ਬ੍ਰਹਮ ਜੰਜਾਲਾ ॥ trai gun baanee braham janjaalaa | The songs of Brahma entangle people in the three qualities. - Guru Amardas Ji
ਪੜਿ ਵਾਦੁ ਵਖਾਣਹਿ ਸਿਰਿ ਮਾਰੇ ਜਮਕਾਲਾ ॥ parr vaad vakhaaneh sir maare jamakaalaa | Reading about the debates and disputes, they are hit over the head by the Messenger of Death. - Guru Amardas Ji
