ਪਰ ਘਰਿ ਚੀਤੁ ਮਨਮੁਖਿ ਡੋਲਾਇ ॥ par ghar cheet manamukh ddolaae | The self-willed manmukh is lured by another man’s wife. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਗਲਿ ਜੇਵਰੀ ਧੰਧੈ ਲਪਟਾਇ ॥ gal jevaree dhandhai lapattaae | The noose is around his neck, and he is entangled in petty conflicts. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਛੂਟਸਿ ਹਰਿ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਇ ॥੫॥ guramukh chhoottas har gun gaae |5| The Gurmukh is emancipated, singing the Glorious Praises of the Lord. ||5|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਜਿਉ ਤਨੁ ਬਿਧਵਾ ਪਰ ਕਉ ਦੇਈ ॥ jiau tan bidhavaa par kau deee | The lonely widow gives her body to a stranger; - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਕਾਮਿ ਦਾਮਿ ਚਿਤੁ ਪਰ ਵਸਿ ਸੇਈ ॥ kaam daam chit par vas seee | she allows her mind to be controlled by others for lust or money - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਬਿਨੁ ਪਿਰ ਤ੍ਰਿਪਤਿ ਨ ਕਬਹੂੰ ਹੋਈ ॥੬॥ bin pir tripat na kabahoon hoee |6| , but without her husband, she is never satisfied. ||6|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਪੜਿ ਪੜਿ ਪੋਥੀ ਸਿੰਮ੍ਰਿਤਿ ਪਾਠਾ ॥ parr parr pothee sinmrit paatthaa | You may read, recite and study the scriptures, - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਬੇਦ ਪੁਰਾਣ ਪੜੈ ਸੁਣਿ ਥਾਟਾ ॥ bed puraan parrai sun thaattaa | The Simritees, Vedas and Puraanas; - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਬਿਨੁ ਰਸ ਰਾਤੇ ਮਨੁ ਬਹੁ ਨਾਟਾ ॥੭॥ bin ras raate man bahu naattaa |7| but without being imbued with the Lord’s essence, the mind wanders endlessly. ||7|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਜਿਉ ਚਾਤ੍ਰਿਕ ਜਲ ਪ੍ਰੇਮ ਪਿਆਸਾ ॥ jiau chaatrik jal prem piaasaa | As the rainbird thirsts longingly for the drop of rain, - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਜਿਉ ਮੀਨਾ ਜਲ ਮਾਹਿ ਉਲਾਸਾ ॥ jiau meenaa jal maeh ulaasaa | and as the fish delights in the water, - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਨਾਨਕ ਹਰਿ ਰਸੁ ਪੀ ਤ੍ਰਿਪਤਾਸਾ ॥੮॥੧੧॥ naanak har ras pee tripataasaa |8|11| Nanak is satisfied by the sublime essence of the Lord. ||8||11|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji

ਹਠੁ ਕਰਿ ਮਰੈ ਨ ਲੇਖੈ ਪਾਵੈ ॥ hatth kar marai na lekhai paavai | One who dies in stubbornness shall not be approved, - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਵੇਸ ਕਰੈ ਬਹੁ ਭਸਮ ਲਗਾਵੈ ॥ ves karai bahu bhasam lagaavai | even though he may wear religious robes and smear his body all over with ashes. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਨਾਮੁ ਬਿਸਾਰਿ ਬਹੁਰਿ ਪਛੁਤਾਵੈ ॥੧॥ naam bisaar bahur pachhutaavai |1| Forgetting the Naam, the Name of the Lord, he comes to regret and repent in the end. ||1|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਤੂੰ ਮਨਿ ਹਰਿ ਜੀਉ ਤੂੰ ਮਨਿ ਸੂਖ ॥ toon man har jeeo toon man sookh | Believe in the Dear Lord, and you shall find peace of mind. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਨਾਮੁ ਬਿਸਾਰਿ ਸਹਹਿ ਜਮ ਦੂਖ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥ naam bisaar saheh jam dookh |1| rahaau | Forgetting the Naam, you shall have to endure the pain of death. ||1||Pause|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਚੋਆ ਚੰਦਨ ਅਗਰ ਕਪੂਰਿ ॥ choaa chandan agar kapoor | The smell of musk, sandalwood and camphor, - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਮਾਇਆ ਮਗਨੁ ਪਰਮ ਪਦੁ ਦੂਰਿ ॥ maaeaa magan param pad door | and the intoxication of Maya, takes one far away from the state of supreme dignity. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਨਾਮਿ ਬਿਸਾਰਿਐ ਸਭੁ ਕੂੜੋ ਕੂਰਿ ॥੨॥ naam bisaariai sabh koorro koor |2| Forgetting the Naam, one becomes the most false of all the false. ||2|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਨੇਜੇ ਵਾਜੇ ਤਖਤਿ ਸਲਾਮੁ ॥ neje vaaje takhat salaam | Lances and swords, marching bands, thrones and the salutes of others - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਅਧਕੀ ਤ੍ਰਿਸਨਾ ਵਿਆਪੈ ਕਾਮੁ ॥ adhakee trisanaa viaapai kaam | only increase his desire; he is engrossed in sexual desire. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਬਿਨੁ ਹਰਿ ਜਾਚੇ ਭਗਤਿ ਨ ਨਾਮੁ ॥੩॥ bin har jaache bhagat na naam |3| Without seeking the Lord, neither devotional worship nor the Naam are obtained. ||3|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਵਾਦਿ ਅਹੰਕਾਰਿ ਨਾਹੀ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਮੇਲਾ ॥ vaad ahankaar naahee prabh melaa | Union with God is not obtained by arguments and egotism. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਮਨੁ ਦੇ ਪਾਵਹਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਸੁਹੇਲਾ ॥ man de paaveh naam suhelaa | But by offering your mind, the comfort of the Naam is obtained. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਦੂਜੈ ਭਾਇ ਅਗਿਆਨੁ ਦੁਹੇਲਾ ॥੪॥ doojai bhaae agiaan duhelaa |4| In the love of duality and ignorance, you shall suffer. ||4|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਬਿਨੁ ਦਮ ਕੇ ਸਉਦਾ ਨਹੀ ਹਾਟ ॥ bin dam ke saudaa nahee haatt | Without money, you cannot buy anything in the store. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਬਿਨੁ ਬੋਹਿਥ ਸਾਗਰ ਨਹੀ ਵਾਟ ॥ bin bohith saagar nahee vaatt | Without a boat, you cannot cross over the ocean. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਬਿਨੁ ਗੁਰ ਸੇਵੇ ਘਾਟੇ ਘਾਟਿ ॥੫॥ bin gur seve ghaatte ghaatt |5| Without serving the Guru, everything is lost. ||5|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਤਿਸ ਕਉ ਵਾਹੁ ਵਾਹੁ ਜਿ ਵਾਟ ਦਿਖਾਵੈ ॥ tis kau vaahu vaahu ji vaatt dikhaavai | Waaho! Waaho! - Hail, hail, to the one who shows us the Way. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਤਿਸ ਕਉ ਵਾਹੁ ਵਾਹੁ ਜਿ ਸਬਦੁ ਸੁਣਾਵੈ ॥ tis kau vaahu vaahu ji sabad sunaavai | Waaho! Waaho! - Hail, hail, to the one who teaches the Word of the Shabad. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਤਿਸ ਕਉ ਵਾਹੁ ਵਾਹੁ ਜਿ ਮੇਲਿ ਮਿਲਾਵੈ ॥੬॥ tis kau vaahu vaahu ji mel milaavai |6| Waaho! Waaho! - Hail, hail, to the one who unites me in the Lord’s Union. ||6|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਵਾਹੁ ਵਾਹੁ ਤਿਸ ਕਉ ਜਿਸ ਕਾ ਇਹੁ ਜੀਉ ॥ vaahu vaahu tis kau jis kaa ihu jeeo | Waaho! Waaho! - Hail, hail, to the one who is the Keeper of this soul. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਗੁਰਸਬਦੀ ਮਥਿ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤੁ ਪੀਉ ॥ gurasabadee math amrit peeo | Through the Word of the Guru’s Shabad, contemplate this Ambrosial Nectar. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਨਾਮ ਵਡਾਈ ਤੁਧੁ ਭਾਣੈ ਦੀਉ ॥੭॥ naam vaddaaee tudh bhaanai deeo |7| The Glorious Greatness of the Naam is bestowed according to the Pleasure of Your Will. ||7|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਨਾਮ ਬਿਨਾ ਕਿਉ ਜੀਵਾ ਮਾਇ ॥ naam binaa kiau jeevaa maae | Without the Naam, how can I live, O mother? - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਅਨਦਿਨੁ ਜਪਤੁ ਰਹਉ ਤੇਰੀ ਸਰਣਾਇ ॥ anadin japat rhau teree saranaae | Night and day, I chant it; I remain in the Protection of Your Sanctuary. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਨਾਨਕ ਨਾਮਿ ਰਤੇ ਪਤਿ ਪਾਇ ॥੮॥੧੨॥ naanak naam rate pat paae |8|12| O Nanak, attuned to the Naam, honor is attained. ||8||12|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji

ਹਉਮੈ ਕਰਤ ਭੇਖੀ ਨਹੀ ਜਾਨਿਆ ॥ haumai karat bhekhee nahee jaaniaa | Acting in egotism, the Lord is not known, even by wearing religious robes. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਭਗਤਿ ਵਿਰਲੇ ਮਨੁ ਮਾਨਿਆ ॥੧॥ guramukh bhagat virale man maaniaa |1| How rare is that Gurmukh, who surrenders his mind in devotional worship. ||1|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਹਉ ਹਉ ਕਰਤ ਨਹੀ ਸਚੁ ਪਾਈਐ ॥ hau hau karat nahee sach paaeeai | By actions done in egotism, selfishness and conceit, the True Lord is not obtained. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਹਉਮੈ ਜਾਇ ਪਰਮ ਪਦੁ ਪਾਈਐ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥ haumai jaae param pad paaeeai |1| rahaau | But when egotism departs, then the state of supreme dignity is obtained. ||1||Pause|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਹਉਮੈ ਕਰਿ ਰਾਜੇ ਬਹੁ ਧਾਵਹਿ ॥ haumai kar raaje bahu dhaaveh | The kings act in egotism, and undertake all sorts of expeditions. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਹਉਮੈ ਖਪਹਿ ਜਨਮਿ ਮਰਿ ਆਵਹਿ ॥੨॥ haumai khapeh janam mar aaveh |2| But through their egotism, they are ruined; they die, only to be reborn over and over again. ||2|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਹਉਮੈ ਨਿਵਰੈ ਗੁਰਸਬਦੁ ਵੀਚਾਰੈ ॥ haumai nivarai gurasabad veechaarai | Egotism is overcome only by contemplating the Word of the Guru’s Shabad. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਚੰਚਲ ਮਤਿ ਤਿਆਗੈ ਪੰਚ ਸੰਘਾਰੈ ॥੩॥ chanchal mat tiaagai panch sanghaarai |3| One who restrains his fickle mind subdues the five passions. ||3|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਅੰਤਰਿ ਸਾਚੁ ਸਹਜ ਘਰਿ ਆਵਹਿ ॥ antar saach sehaj ghar aaveh | With the True Lord deep within the self, the Celestial Mansion is intuitively found. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਰਾਜਨੁ ਜਾਣਿ ਪਰਮ ਗਤਿ ਪਾਵਹਿ ॥੪॥ raajan jaan param gat paaveh |4| Understanding the Sovereign Lord, the state of supreme dignity is obtained. ||4|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਸਚੁ ਕਰਣੀ ਗੁਰੁ ਭਰਮੁ ਚੁਕਾਵੈ ॥ sach karanee gur bharam chukaavai | The Guru dispels the doubts of those whose actions are true. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਨਿਰਭਉ ਕੈ ਘਰਿ ਤਾੜੀ ਲਾਵੈ ॥੫॥ nirbhau kai ghar taarree laavai |5| They focus their attention on the Home of the Fearless Lord. ||5|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਹਉ ਹਉ ਕਰਿ ਮਰਣਾ ਕਿਆ ਪਾਵੈ ॥ hau hau kar maranaa kiaa paavai | Those who act in egotism, selfishness and conceit die; what do they gain? - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਪੂਰਾ ਗੁਰੁ ਭੇਟੇ ਸੋ ਝਗਰੁ ਚੁਕਾਵੈ ॥੬॥ pooraa gur bhette so jhagar chukaavai |6| Those who meet the Perfect Guru are rid of all conflicts. ||6|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਜੇਤੀ ਹੈ ਤੇਤੀ ਕਿਹੁ ਨਾਹੀ ॥ jetee hai tetee kihu naahee | Whatever exists, is in reality nothing. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਗਿਆਨ ਭੇਟਿ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਹੀ ॥੭॥ guramukh giaan bhett gun gaahee |7| Obtaining spiritual wisdom from the Guru, I sing the Glories of God. ||7|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
