ਤਨਿ ਮਨਿ ਸੂਚੈ ਸਾਚੁ ਸੁ ਚੀਤਿ ॥ tan man soochai saach su cheet | Their bodies and minds are purified, as they enshrine the True Lord in their consciousness. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਨਾਨਕ ਹਰਿ ਭਜੁ ਨੀਤਾ ਨੀਤਿ ॥੮॥੨॥ naanak har bhaj neetaa neet |8|2| O Nanak, meditate on the Lord, each and every day. ||8||2|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji

ਨਾ ਮਨੁ ਮਰੈ ਨ ਕਾਰਜੁ ਹੋਇ ॥ naa man marai na kaaraj hoe | The mind does not die, so the job is not accomplished. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਮਨੁ ਵਸਿ ਦੂਤਾ ਦੁਰਮਤਿ ਦੋਇ ॥ man vas dootaa duramat doe | The mind is under the power of the demons of evil intellect and duality. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਮਨੁ ਮਾਨੈ ਗੁਰ ਤੇ ਇਕੁ ਹੋਇ ॥੧॥ man maanai gur te ik hoe |1| But when the mind surrenders, through the Guru, it becomes one. ||1|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਨਿਰਗੁਣ ਰਾਮੁ ਗੁਣਹ ਵਸਿ ਹੋਇ ॥ niragun raam gunah vas hoe | The Lord is without attributes; the attributes of virtue are under His control. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਆਪੁ ਨਿਵਾਰਿ ਬੀਚਾਰੇ ਸੋਇ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥ aap nivaar beechaare soe |1| rahaau | One who eliminates selfishness contemplates Him. ||1||Pause|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਮਨੁ ਭੂਲੋ ਬਹੁ ਚਿਤੈ ਵਿਕਾਰੁ ॥ man bhoolo bahu chitai vikaar | The deluded mind thinks of all sorts of corruption. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਮਨੁ ਭੂਲੋ ਸਿਰਿ ਆਵੈ ਭਾਰੁ ॥ man bhoolo sir aavai bhaar | When the mind is deluded, the load of wickedness falls on the head. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਮਨੁ ਮਾਨੈ ਹਰਿ ਏਕੰਕਾਰੁ ॥੨॥ man maanai har ekankaar |2| But when the mind surrenders to the Lord, it realizes the One and Only Lord. ||2|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਮਨੁ ਭੂਲੋ ਮਾਇਆ ਘਰਿ ਜਾਇ ॥ man bhoolo maaeaa ghar jaae | The deluded mind enters the house of Maya. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਕਾਮਿ ਬਿਰੂਧਉ ਰਹੈ ਨ ਠਾਇ ॥ kaam biroodhau rahai na tthaae | Engrossed in sexual desire, it does not remain steady. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਹਰਿ ਭਜੁ ਪ੍ਰਾਣੀ ਰਸਨ ਰਸਾਇ ॥੩॥ har bhaj praanee rasan rasaae |3| O mortal, lovingly vibrate the Lord’s Name with your tongue. ||3|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਗੈਵਰ ਹੈਵਰ ਕੰਚਨ ਸੁਤ ਨਾਰੀ ॥ gaivar haivar kanchan sut naaree | Elephants, horses, gold, children and spouses - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਬਹੁ ਚਿੰਤਾ ਪਿੜ ਚਾਲੈ ਹਾਰੀ ॥ bahu chintaa pirr chaalai haaree | in the anxious affairs of all these, people lose the game and depart. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਜੂਐ ਖੇਲਣੁ ਕਾਚੀ ਸਾਰੀ ॥੪॥ jooai khelan kaachee saaree |4| In the game of chess, their pieces do not reach their destination. ||4|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਸੰਪਉ ਸੰਚੀ ਭਏ ਵਿਕਾਰ ॥ sanpau sanchee bhe vikaar | They gather wealth, but only evil comes from it. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਹਰਖ ਸੋਕ ਉਭੇ ਦਰਵਾਰਿ ॥ harakh sok ubhe daravaar | Pleasure and pain stand in the doorway. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਸੁਖੁ ਸਹਜੇ ਜਪਿ ਰਿਦੈ ਮੁਰਾਰਿ ॥੫॥ sukh sahaje jap ridai muraar |5| Intuitive peace comes by meditating on the Lord, within the heart. ||5|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਨਦਰਿ ਕਰੇ ਤਾ ਮੇਲਿ ਮਿਲਾਏ ॥ nadar kare taa mel milaae | When the Lord bestows His Glance of Grace, then He unites us in His Union. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਗੁਣ ਸੰਗ੍ਰਹਿ ਅਉਗਣ ਸਬਦਿ ਜਲਾਏ ॥ gun sangreh aaugan sabad jalaae | Through the Word of the Shabad, merits are gathered in, and demerits are burned away. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਪਦਾਰਥੁ ਪਾਏ ॥੬॥ guramukh naam padaarath paae |6| The Gurmukh obtains the treasure of the Naam, the Name of the Lord. ||6|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਬਿਨੁ ਨਾਵੈ ਸਭ ਦੂਖ ਨਿਵਾਸੁ ॥ bin naavai sabh dookh nivaas | Without the Name, all live in pain. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਮਨਮੁਖ ਮੂੜ ਮਾਇਆ ਚਿਤ ਵਾਸੁ ॥ manamukh moorr maaeaa chit vaas | The consciousness of the foolish, self-willed manmukh is the dwelling place of Maya. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਗਿਆਨੁ ਧੁਰਿ ਕਰਮਿ ਲਿਖਿਆਸੁ ॥੭॥ guramukh giaan dhur karam likhiaas |7| The Gurmukh obtains spiritual wisdom, according to pre-ordained destiny. ||7|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਮਨੁ ਚੰਚਲੁ ਧਾਵਤੁ ਫੁਨਿ ਧਾਵੈ ॥ man chanchal dhaavat fun dhaavai | The fickle mind continuously runs after fleeting things. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਸਾਚੇ ਸੂਚੇ ਮੈਲੁ ਨ ਭਾਵੈ ॥ saache sooche mail na bhaavai | The Pure True Lord is not pleased by filth. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਨਾਨਕ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਹਰਿ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਵੈ ॥੮॥੩॥ naanak guramukh har gun gaavai |8|3| O Nanak, the Gurmukh sings the Glorious Praises of the Lord. ||8||3|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji

ਹਉਮੈ ਕਰਤਿਆ ਨਹ ਸੁਖੁ ਹੋਇ ॥ haumai karatiaa neh sukh hoe | Acting in egotism, peace is not obtained. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਮਨਮਤਿ ਝੂਠੀ ਸਚਾ ਸੋਇ ॥ manamat jhootthee sachaa soe | The intellect of the mind is false; only the Lord is True. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਸਗਲ ਬਿਗੂਤੇ ਭਾਵੈ ਦੋਇ ॥ sagal bigoote bhaavai doe | All who love duality are ruined. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਸੋ ਕਮਾਵੈ ਧੁਰਿ ਲਿਖਿਆ ਹੋਇ ॥੧॥ so kamaavai dhur likhiaa hoe |1| People act as they are pre-ordained. ||1|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਐਸਾ ਜਗੁ ਦੇਖਿਆ ਜੂਆਰੀ ॥ aisaa jag dekhiaa jooaaree | I have seen the world to be such a gambler; - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਸਭਿ ਸੁਖ ਮਾਗੈ ਨਾਮੁ ਬਿਸਾਰੀ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥ sabh sukh maagai naam bisaaree |1| rahaau | all beg for peace, but they forget the Naam, the Name of the Lord. ||1||Pause|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਅਦਿਸਟੁ ਦਿਸੈ ਤਾ ਕਹਿਆ ਜਾਇ ॥ adisatt disai taa kahiaa jaae | If the Unseen Lord could be seen, then He could be described. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਬਿਨੁ ਦੇਖੇ ਕਹਣਾ ਬਿਰਥਾ ਜਾਇ ॥ bin dekhe kahanaa birathaa jaae | Without seeing Him, all descriptions are useless. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਦੀਸੈ ਸਹਜਿ ਸੁਭਾਇ ॥ guramukh deesai sehaj subhaae | The Gurmukh sees Him with intuitive ease. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਸੇਵਾ ਸੁਰਤਿ ਏਕ ਲਿਵ ਲਾਇ ॥੨॥ sevaa surat ek liv laae |2| So serve the One Lord, with loving awareness. ||2|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਸੁਖੁ ਮਾਂਗਤ ਦੁਖੁ ਆਗਲ ਹੋਇ ॥ sukh maangat dukh aagal hoe | People beg for peace, but they receive severe pain. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਸਗਲ ਵਿਕਾਰੀ ਹਾਰੁ ਪਰੋਇ ॥ sagal vikaaree haar paroe | They are all weaving a wreath of corruption. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਏਕ ਬਿਨਾ ਝੂਠੇ ਮੁਕਤਿ ਨ ਹੋਇ ॥ ek binaa jhootthe mukat na hoe | You are false - without the One, there is no liberation. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਕਰਿ ਕਰਿ ਕਰਤਾ ਦੇਖੈ ਸੋਇ ॥੩॥ kar kar karataa dekhai soe |3| The Creator created the creation, and He watches over it. ||3|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਤ੍ਰਿਸਨਾ ਅਗਨਿ ਸਬਦਿ ਬੁਝਾਏ ॥ trisanaa agan sabad bujhaae | The fire of desire is quenched by the Word of the Shabad. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਦੂਜਾ ਭਰਮੁ ਸਹਜਿ ਸੁਭਾਏ ॥ doojaa bharam sehaj subhaae | Duality and doubt are automatically eliminated. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਗੁਰਮਤੀ ਨਾਮੁ ਰਿਦੈ ਵਸਾਏ ॥ guramatee naam ridai vasaae | Following the Guru’s Teachings, the Naam abides in the heart. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਸਾਚੀ ਬਾਣੀ ਹਰਿ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਏ ॥੪॥ saachee baanee har gun gaae |4| Through the True Word of His Bani, sing the Glorious Praises of the Lord. ||4|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਤਨ ਮਹਿ ਸਾਚੋ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਭਾਉ ॥ tan meh saacho guramukh bhaau | The True Lord abides within the body of that Gurmukh who enshrines love for Him. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਨਾਮ ਬਿਨਾ ਨਾਹੀ ਨਿਜ ਠਾਉ ॥ naam binaa naahee nij tthaau | Without the Naam, none obtain their own place. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਪ੍ਰੇਮ ਪਰਾਇਣ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਮ ਰਾਉ ॥ prem paraaein preetam raau | The Beloved Lord King is dedicated to love. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਨਦਰਿ ਕਰੇ ਤਾ ਬੂਝੈ ਨਾਉ ॥੫॥ nadar kare taa boojhai naau |5| If He bestows His Glance of Grace, then we realize His Name. ||5|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਮਾਇਆ ਮੋਹੁ ਸਰਬ ਜੰਜਾਲਾ ॥ maaeaa mohu sarab janjaalaa | Emotional attachment to Maya is total entanglement. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਮਨਮੁਖ ਕੁਚੀਲ ਕੁਛਿਤ ਬਿਕਰਾਲਾ ॥ manamukh kucheel kuchhit bikaraalaa | The self-willed manmukh is filthy, cursed and dreadful. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਸੇਵੇ ਚੂਕੈ ਜੰਜਾਲਾ ॥ satigur seve chookai janjaalaa | Serving the True Guru, these entanglements are ended. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਨਾਮੁ ਸਦਾ ਸੁਖੁ ਨਾਲਾ ॥੬॥ amrit naam sadaa sukh naalaa |6| In the Ambrosial Nectar of the Naam, you shall abide in lasting peace. ||6|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਬੂਝੈ ਏਕ ਲਿਵ ਲਾਏ ॥ guramukh boojhai ek liv laae | The Gurmukhs understand the One Lord, and enshrine love for Him. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਨਿਜ ਘਰਿ ਵਾਸੈ ਸਾਚਿ ਸਮਾਏ ॥ nij ghar vaasai saach samaae | They dwell in the home of their own inner beings, and merge in the True Lord. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਜੰਮਣੁ ਮਰਣਾ ਠਾਕਿ ਰਹਾਏ ॥ jaman maranaa tthaak rahaae | The cycle of birth and death is ended. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਪੂਰੇ ਗੁਰ ਤੇ ਇਹ ਮਤਿ ਪਾਏ ॥੭॥ poore gur te ih mat paae |7| This understanding is obtained from the Perfect Guru. ||7|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਕਥਨੀ ਕਥਉ ਨ ਆਵੈ ਓਰੁ ॥ kathanee kthau na aavai or | Speaking the speech, there is no end to it. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
