ਅੰਤਰਿ ਅਲਖੁ ਨ ਜਾਈ ਲਖਿਆ ਵਿਚਿ ਪੜਦਾ ਹਉਮੈ ਪਾਈ ॥ antar alakh na jaaee lakhiaa vich parradaa haumai paaee | The Unseen Lord is deep within the self; He cannot be seen; the curtain of egotism intervenes. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਮਾਇਆ ਮੋਹਿ ਸਭੋ ਜਗੁ ਸੋਇਆ ਇਹੁ ਭਰਮੁ ਕਹਹੁ ਕਿਉ ਜਾਈ ॥੧॥ maaeaa mohi sabho jag soeaa ihu bharam kahahu kiau jaaee |1| In emotional attachment to Maya, all the world is asleep. Tell me, how can this doubt be dispelled? ||1|| - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਏਕਾ ਸੰਗਤਿ ਇਕਤੁ ਗ੍ਰਿਹਿ ਬਸਤੇ ਮਿਲਿ ਬਾਤ ਨ ਕਰਤੇ ਭਾਈ ॥ ekaa sangat ikat grihi basate mil baat na karate bhaaee | The one lives together with the other in the same house, but they do not talk to one another, O Siblings of Destiny. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਏਕ ਬਸਤੁ ਬਿਨੁ ਪੰਚ ਦੁਹੇਲੇ ਓਹ ਬਸਤੁ ਅਗੋਚਰ ਠਾਈ ॥੨॥ ek basat bin panch duhele oeh basat agochar tthaaee |2| Without the one substance, the five are miserable; that substance is in the unapproachable place. ||2|| - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਜਿਸ ਕਾ ਗ੍ਰਿਹੁ ਤਿਨਿ ਦੀਆ ਤਾਲਾ ਕੁੰਜੀ ਗੁਰ ਸਉਪਾਈ ॥ jis kaa grihu tin deea taalaa kunjee gur saupaaee | And the one whose home it is, has locked it up, and given the key to the Guru. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਅਨਿਕ ਉਪਾਵ ਕਰੇ ਨਹੀ ਪਾਵੈ ਬਿਨੁ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਸਰਣਾਈ ॥੩॥ anik upaav kare nahee paavai bin satigur saranaaee |3| You may make all sorts of efforts, but it cannot be obtained, without the Sanctuary of the True Guru. ||3|| - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਜਿਨ ਕੇ ਬੰਧਨ ਕਾਟੇ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਤਿਨ ਸਾਧਸੰਗਤਿ ਲਿਵ ਲਾਈ ॥ jin ke bandhan kaatte satigur tin saadhasangat liv laaee | Those whose bonds have been broken by the True Guru, enshrine love for the Saadh Sangat, the Company of the Holy. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਪੰਚ ਜਨਾ ਮਿਲਿ ਮੰਗਲੁ ਗਾਇਆ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਨਕ ਭੇਦੁ ਨ ਭਾਈ ॥੪॥ panch janaa mil mangal gaaeaa har naanak bhed na bhaaee |4| The self-elect, the self-realized beings, meet together and sing the joyous songs of the Lord. Nanak, there is no difference between them, O Siblings of Destiny. ||4|| - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਮੇਰੇ ਰਾਮ ਰਾਇ ਇਨ ਬਿਧਿ ਮਿਲੈ ਗੁਸਾਈ ॥ mere raam raae in bidh milai gusaaee | This is how my Sovereign Lord King, the Lord of the Universe, is met; - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਸਹਜੁ ਭਇਆ ਭ੍ਰਮੁ ਖਿਨ ਮਹਿ ਨਾਠਾ ਮਿਲਿ ਜੋਤੀ ਜੋਤਿ ਸਮਾਈ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ਦੂਜਾ ॥੧॥੧੨੨॥ sehaj bheaa bhram khin meh naatthaa mil jotee jot samaaee |1| rahaau doojaa |1|122| celestial bliss is attained in an instant, and doubt is dispelled. ਕਰੀ ਕ੍ਰਿਪਾ ਦਇਆਲ ਬੀਠੁਲੈ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਮੁਝਹਿ ਬਤਾਇਓ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥ karee kripaa deaal beetthulai satigur mujheh bataaeo |1| rahaau | granting His Grace, my Kind Beloved has told me of the True Guru. ||1||Pause|| - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਜਤ ਕਤ ਦੇਖਉ ਤਤ ਤਤ ਤੁਮ ਹੀ ਮੋਹਿ ਇਹੁ ਬਿਸੁਆਸੁ ਹੋਇ ਆਇਓ ॥ jat kat dekhau tat tat tum hee mohi ihu bisuaas hoe aaeo | Wherever I look, there You are; I am totally convinced of this. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਕੈ ਪਹਿ ਕਰਉ ਅਰਦਾਸਿ ਬੇਨਤੀ ਜਉ ਸੁਨਤੋ ਹੈ ਰਘੁਰਾਇਓ ॥੧॥ kai peh krau aradaas benatee jau sunato hai raghuraaeo |1| Unto whom should I pray? The Lord Himself hears all. ||1|| - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਲਹਿਓ ਸਹਸਾ ਬੰਧਨ ਗੁਰਿ ਤੋਰੇ ਤਾਂ ਸਦਾ ਸਹਜ ਸੁਖੁ ਪਾਇਓ ॥ lahio sahasaa bandhan gur tore taan sadaa sehaj sukh paaeo | My anxiety is over. The Guru has cut away my bonds, and I have found eternal peace. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਹੋਣਾ ਸਾ ਸੋਈ ਫੁਨਿ ਹੋਸੀ ਸੁਖੁ ਦੁਖੁ ਕਹਾ ਦਿਖਾਇਓ ॥੨॥ honaa saa soee fun hosee sukh dukh kahaa dikhaaeo |2| Whatever shall be, shall be in the end; so where can pain and pleasure be seen? ||2|| - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਖੰਡ ਬ੍ਰਹਮੰਡ ਕਾ ਏਕੋ ਠਾਣਾ ਗੁਰਿ ਪਰਦਾ ਖੋਲਿ ਦਿਖਾਇਓ ॥ khandd brahamandd kaa eko tthaanaa gur paradaa khol dikhaaeo | The continents and the solar systems rest in the support of the One Lord. The Guru has removed the veil of illusion, and shown this to me. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਨਉ ਨਿਧਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਨਿਧਾਨੁ ਇਕ ਠਾਈ ਤਉ ਬਾਹਰਿ ਕੈਠੈ ਜਾਇਓ ॥੩॥ nau nidh naam nidhaan ik tthaaee tau baahar kaitthai jaaeo |3| The nine treasures of the wealth of the Name of the Lord are in that one place. Where else should we go? ||3|| - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਏਕੈ ਕਨਿਕ ਅਨਿਕ ਭਾਤਿ ਸਾਜੀ ਬਹੁ ਪਰਕਾਰ ਰਚਾਇਓ ॥ ekai kanik anik bhaat saajee bahu parakaar rachaaeo | The same gold is fashioned into various articles; just so, the Lord has made the many patterns of the creation. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਕਹੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਭਰਮੁ ਗੁਰਿ ਖੋਈ ਹੈ ਇਵ ਤਤੈ ਤਤੁ ਮਿਲਾਇਓ ॥੪॥੨॥੧੨੩॥ kahu naanak bharam gur khoee hai iv tatai tat milaaeo |4|2|123| Says Nanak, the Guru has dispelled my doubt; in this way, my essence merges into God’s essence. ||4||2||123|| - Guru Arjan Dev Ji

ਅਉਧ ਘਟੈ ਦਿਨਸੁ ਰੈਨਾਰੇ ॥ aaudh ghattai dinas rainaare | This life is diminishing, day and night. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਮਨ ਗੁਰ ਮਿਲਿ ਕਾਜ ਸਵਾਰੇ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥ man gur mil kaaj savaare |1| rahaau | Meeting with the Guru, your affairs shall be resolved. ||1||Pause|| - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਕਰਉ ਬੇਨੰਤੀ ਸੁਨਹੁ ਮੇਰੇ ਮੀਤਾ ਸੰਤ ਟਹਲ ਕੀ ਬੇਲਾ ॥ krau benantee sunahu mere meetaa sant ttehal kee belaa | Listen, my friends, I beg of you: now is the time to serve the Saints! - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਈਹਾ ਖਾਟਿ ਚਲਹੁ ਹਰਿ ਲਾਹਾ ਆਗੈ ਬਸਨੁ ਸੁਹੇਲਾ ॥੧॥ eehaa khaatt chalahu har laahaa aagai basan suhelaa |1| In this world, earn the profit of the Lord’s Name, and hereafter, you shall dwell in peace. ||1|| - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਇਹੁ ਸੰਸਾਰੁ ਬਿਕਾਰੁ ਸਹਸੇ ਮਹਿ ਤਰਿਓ ਬ੍ਰਹਮ ਗਿਆਨੀ ॥ eihu sansaar bikaar sahase meh tario braham giaanee | This world is engrossed in corruption and cynicism. Only those who know God are saved. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਜਿਸਹਿ ਜਗਾਇ ਪੀਆਏ ਹਰਿ ਰਸੁ ਅਕਥ ਕਥਾ ਤਿਨਿ ਜਾਨੀ ॥੨॥ jiseh jagaae peeae har ras akath kathaa tin jaanee |2| Those who are awakened by the Lord to drink in this sublime essence, come to know the Unspoken Speech of the Lord. ||2|| - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਜਾ ਕਉ ਆਏ ਸੋਈ ਵਿਹਾਝਹੁ ਹਰਿ ਗੁਰ ਤੇ ਮਨਹਿ ਬਸੇਰਾ ॥ jaa kau aae soee vihaajhahu har gur te maneh baseraa | Purchase only that for which you have come into the world, and through the Guru, the Lord shall dwell within your mind. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਨਿਜ ਘਰਿ ਮਹਲੁ ਪਾਵਹੁ ਸੁਖ ਸਹਜੇ ਬਹੁਰਿ ਨ ਹੋਇਗੋ ਫੇਰਾ ॥੩॥ nij ghar mehal paavahu sukh sahaje bahur na hoeigo feraa |3| Within the home of your own inner being, you shall obtain the Mansion of the Lord’s Presence with intuitive ease. You shall not be consigned again to the wheel of reincarnation. ||3|| - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਅੰਤਰਜਾਮੀ ਪੁਰਖ ਬਿਧਾਤੇ ਸਰਧਾ ਮਨ ਕੀ ਪੂਰੇ ॥ antarajaamee purakh bidhaate saradhaa man kee poore | O Inner-knower, Searcher of hearts, Primal Being, Architect of Destiny: please fulfill this yearning of my mind. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਨਾਨਕੁ ਦਾਸੁ ਇਹੀ ਸੁਖੁ ਮਾਗੈ ਮੋ ਕਉ ਕਰਿ ਸੰਤਨ ਕੀ ਧੂਰੇ ॥੪॥੩॥੧੨੪॥ naanak daas ihee sukh maagai mo kau kar santan kee dhoore |4|3|124| Nanak, Your slave, begs for this happiness: let me be the dust of the feet of the Saints. ||4||3||124|| - Guru Arjan Dev Ji

ਖੇਦੁ ਕਰਹਿ ਅਰੁ ਬਹੁਤੁ ਸੰਤਾਵਹਿ ਆਇਓ ਸਰਨਿ ਤੁਹਾਰੇ ॥੧॥ khed kareh ar bahut santaaveh aaeo saran tuhaare |1| They are tormenting and torturing me. I have come, seeking Your Sanctuary. ||1|| - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
