ਦਯਿ ਵਿਗੋਏ ਫਿਰਹਿ ਵਿਗੁਤੇ ਫਿਟਾ ਵਤੈ ਗਲਾ ॥ day vigoe fireh vigute fittaa vatai galaa | Ruined by the Merciful Lord, they wander around in disgrace, and their entire troop is contaminated. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji

ਜੀਆ ਮਾਰਿ ਜੀਵਾਲੇ ਸੋਈ ਅਵਰੁ ਨ ਕੋਈ ਰਖੈ ॥ jeea maar jeevaale soee avar na koee rakhai | The Lord alone kills and restores to life; no one else can protect anyone from Him. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji

ਦਾਨਹੁ ਤੈ ਇਸਨਾਨਹੁ ਵੰਜੇ ਭਸੁ ਪਈ ਸਿਰਿ ਖੁਥੈ ॥ daanahu tai isanaanahu vanje bhas pee sir khuthai | They go without giving alms or any cleansing baths; their shaven heads become covered with dust. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji

ਪਾਣੀ ਵਿਚਹੁ ਰਤਨ ਉਪੰਨੇ ਮੇਰੁ ਕੀਆ ਮਾਧਾਣੀ ॥ paanee vichahu ratan upane mer keea maadhaanee | The jewel emerged from the water, when the mountain of gold was used to churn it. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji

ਅਠਸਠਿ ਤੀਰਥ ਦੇਵੀ ਥਾਪੇ ਪੁਰਬੀ ਲਗੈ ਬਾਣੀ ॥ atthasatth teerath devee thaape purabee lagai baanee | The gods established the sixty-eight sacred shrines of pilgrimage, where the festivals are celebrated and hymns are chanted. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji

ਨਾਇ ਨਿਵਾਜਾ ਨਾਤੈ ਪੂਜਾ ਨਾਵਨਿ ਸਦਾ ਸੁਜਾਣੀ ॥ naae nivaajaa naatai poojaa naavan sadaa sujaanee | After bathing, the Muslims recite their prayers, and after bathing, the Hindus perform their worship services. The wise always take cleansing baths. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji

ਮੁਇਆ ਜੀਵਦਿਆ ਗਤਿ ਹੋਵੈ ਜਾਂ ਸਿਰਿ ਪਾਈਐ ਪਾਣੀ ॥ mueaa jeevadiaa gat hovai jaan sir paaeeai paanee | At the time of death, and at the time of birth, they are purified, when water is poured on their heads. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji

ਨਾਨਕ ਸਿਰਖੁਥੇ ਸੈਤਾਨੀ ਏਨਾ ਗਲ ਨ ਭਾਣੀ ॥ naanak sirakhuthe saitaanee enaa gal na bhaanee | O Nanak, the shaven-headed ones are devils. They are not pleased to hear these words. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji

ਵੁਠੈ ਹੋਇਐ ਹੋਇ ਬਿਲਾਵਲੁ ਜੀਆ ਜੁਗਤਿ ਸਮਾਣੀ ॥ vutthai hoeiai hoe bilaaval jeea jugat samaanee | When it rains, there is happiness. Water is the key to all life. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji

ਵੁਠੈ ਅੰਨੁ ਕਮਾਦੁ ਕਪਾਹਾ ਸਭਸੈ ਪੜਦਾ ਹੋਵੈ ॥ vutthai an kamaad kapaahaa sabhasai parradaa hovai | When it rains, the corn grows, and the sugar cane, and the cotton, which provides clothing for all. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji

ਵੁਠੈ ਘਾਹੁ ਚਰਹਿ ਨਿਤਿ ਸੁਰਹੀ ਸਾ ਧਨ ਦਹੀ ਵਿਲੋਵੈ ॥ vutthai ghaahu chareh nit surahee saa dhan dahee vilovai | When it rains, the cows always have grass to graze upon, and housewives can churn the milk into butter. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji

ਤਿਤੁ ਘਿਇ ਹੋਮ ਜਗ ਸਦ ਪੂਜਾ ਪਇਐ ਕਾਰਜੁ ਸੋਹੈ ॥ tit ghie hom jag sad poojaa peiai kaaraj sohai | With that ghee, sacred feasts and worship services are performed; all these efforts are blessed. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji

ਗੁਰੂ ਸਮੁੰਦੁ ਨਦੀ ਸਭਿ ਸਿਖੀ ਨਾਤੈ ਜਿਤੁ ਵਡਿਆਈ ॥ guroo samund nadee sabh sikhee naatai jit vaddiaaee | The Guru is the ocean, and all His Teachings are the river. Bathing within it, glorious greatness is obtained. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji

ਨਾਨਕ ਜੇ ਸਿਰਖੁਥੇ ਨਾਵਨਿ ਨਾਹੀ ਤਾ ਸਤ ਚਟੇ ਸਿਰਿ ਛਾਈ ॥੧॥ naanak je sirakhuthe naavan naahee taa sat chatte sir chhaaee |1| O Nanak, if the shaven-headed ones do not bathe, then seven handfuls of ashes are upon their heads. ||1|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji

ਅਗੀ ਪਾਲਾ ਕਿ ਕਰੇ ਸੂਰਜ ਕੇਹੀ ਰਾਤਿ ॥ agee paalaa ki kare sooraj kehee raat | What can the cold do to the fire? How can the night affect the sun? - Guru Angad Dev Ji

ਚੰਦ ਅਨੇਰਾ ਕਿ ਕਰੇ ਪਉਣ ਪਾਣੀ ਕਿਆ ਜਾਤਿ ॥ chand aneraa ki kare paun paanee kiaa jaat | What can the darkness do to the moon? What can social status do to air and water? - Guru Angad Dev Ji

ਧਰਤੀ ਚੀਜੀ ਕਿ ਕਰੇ ਜਿਸੁ ਵਿਚਿ ਸਭੁ ਕਿਛੁ ਹੋਇ ॥ dharatee cheejee ki kare jis vich sabh kichh hoe | What are personal possessions to the earth, from which all things are produced? - Guru Angad Dev Ji

ਨਾਨਕ ਤਾ ਪਤਿ ਜਾਣੀਐ ਜਾ ਪਤਿ ਰਖੈ ਸੋਇ ॥੨॥ naanak taa pat jaaneeai jaa pat rakhai soe |2| O Nanak, he alone is known as honorable, whose honor the Lord preserves. ||2|| - Guru Angad Dev Ji

ਪਉੜੀ ॥ paurree | Pauree: - Guru Nanak Dev Ji

ਤੁਧੁ ਸਚੇ ਸੁਬਹਾਨੁ ਸਦਾ ਕਲਾਣਿਆ ॥ tudh sache subahaan sadaa kalaaniaa | It is of You, O my True and Wondrous Lord, that I sing forever. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji

ਤੂੰ ਸਚਾ ਦੀਬਾਣੁ ਹੋਰਿ ਆਵਣ ਜਾਣਿਆ ॥ toon sachaa deebaan hor aavan jaaniaa | Yours is the True Court. All others are subject to coming and going. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji

ਸਚੁ ਜਿ ਮੰਗਹਿ ਦਾਨੁ ਸਿ ਤੁਧੈ ਜੇਹਿਆ ॥ sach ji mangeh daan si tudhai jehiaa | Those who ask for the gift of the True Name are like You. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji

ਸਚੁ ਤੇਰਾ ਫੁਰਮਾਨੁ ਸਬਦੇ ਸੋਹਿਆ ॥ sach teraa furamaan sabade sohiaa | Your Command is True; we are adorned with the Word of Your Shabad. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji

ਮੰਨਿਐ ਗਿਆਨੁ ਧਿਆਨੁ ਤੁਧੈ ਤੇ ਪਾਇਆ ॥ maniai giaan dhiaan tudhai te paaeaa | Through faith and trust, we receive spiritual wisdom and meditation from You. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji

ਕਰਮਿ ਪਵੈ ਨੀਸਾਨੁ ਨ ਚਲੈ ਚਲਾਇਆ ॥ karam pavai neesaan na chalai chalaaeaa | By Your Grace, the banner of honor is obtained. It cannot be taken away or lost. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji

ਤੂੰ ਸਚਾ ਦਾਤਾਰੁ ਨਿਤ ਦੇਵਹਿ ਚੜਹਿ ਸਵਾਇਆ ॥ toon sachaa daataar nit deveh charreh savaaeaa | You are the True Giver; You give continually. Your Gifts continue to increase. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji

ਨਾਨਕੁ ਮੰਗੈ ਦਾਨੁ ਜੋ ਤੁਧੁ ਭਾਇਆ ॥੨੬॥ naanak mangai daan jo tudh bhaaeaa |26| Nanak begs for that gift which is pleasing to You. ||26|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji

ਦੀਖਿਆ ਆਖਿ ਬੁਝਾਇਆ ਸਿਫਤੀ ਸਚਿ ਸਮੇਉ ॥ deekhiaa aakh bujhaaeaa sifatee sach sameo | Those who have accepted the Guru’s Teachings, and who have found the path, remain absorbed in the Praises of the True Lord. - Guru Angad Dev Ji

ਤਿਨ ਕਉ ਕਿਆ ਉਪਦੇਸੀਐ ਜਿਨ ਗੁਰੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਦੇਉ ॥੧॥ tin kau kiaa upadeseeai jin gur naanak deo |1| What teachings can be imparted to those who have the Divine Guru Nanak as their Guru? ||1|| - Guru Angad Dev Ji

ਆਪਿ ਬੁਝਾਏ ਸੋਈ ਬੂਝੈ ॥ aap bujhaae soee boojhai | We understand the Lord only when He Himself inspires us to understand Him. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji

ਜਿਸੁ ਆਪਿ ਸੁਝਾਏ ਤਿਸੁ ਸਭੁ ਕਿਛੁ ਸੂਝੈ ॥ jis aap sujhaae tis sabh kichh soojhai | He alone knows everything, unto whom the Lord Himself gives knowledge. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji

ਕਹਿ ਕਹਿ ਕਥਨਾ ਮਾਇਆ ਲੂਝੈ ॥ keh keh kathanaa maaeaa loojhai | One may talk and preach and give sermons but still yearn after Maya. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji

ਹੁਕਮੀ ਸਗਲ ਕਰੇ ਆਕਾਰ ॥ hukamee sagal kare aakaar | The Lord, by the Hukam of His Command, has created the entire creation. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji

ਆਪੇ ਜਾਣੈ ਸਰਬ ਵੀਚਾਰ ॥ aape jaanai sarab veechaar | He Himself knows the inner nature of all. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji

ਅਖਰ ਨਾਨਕ ਅਖਿਓ ਆਪਿ ॥ akhar naanak akhio aap | O Nanak, He Himself uttered the Word. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji

ਲਹੈ ਭਰਾਤਿ ਹੋਵੈ ਜਿਸੁ ਦਾਤਿ ॥੨॥ lahai bharaat hovai jis daat |2| Doubt departs from one who receives this gift. ||2|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji

ਪਉੜੀ ॥ paurree | Pauree: - Guru Nanak Dev Ji

ਹਉ ਢਾਢੀ ਵੇਕਾਰੁ ਕਾਰੈ ਲਾਇਆ ॥ hau dtaadtee vekaar kaarai laaeaa | I was a minstrel, out of work, when the Lord took me into His service. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji

ਰਾਤਿ ਦਿਹੈ ਕੈ ਵਾਰ ਧੁਰਹੁ ਫੁਰਮਾਇਆ ॥ raat dihai kai vaar dhurahu furamaaeaa | To sing His Praises day and night, He gave me His Order, right from the start. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji

ਢਾਢੀ ਸਚੈ ਮਹਲਿ ਖਸਮਿ ਬੁਲਾਇਆ ॥ dtaadtee sachai mehal khasam bulaaeaa | My Lord and Master has summoned me, His minstrel, to the True Mansion of His Presence. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji

ਸਚੀ ਸਿਫਤਿ ਸਾਲਾਹ ਕਪੜਾ ਪਾਇਆ ॥ sachee sifat saalaah kaparraa paaeaa | He has dressed me in the robes of His True Praise and Glory. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji

ਸਚਾ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਨਾਮੁ ਭੋਜਨੁ ਆਇਆ ॥ sachaa amrit naam bhojan aaeaa | The Ambrosial Nectar of the True Name has become my food. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji

ਗੁਰਮਤੀ ਖਾਧਾ ਰਜਿ ਤਿਨਿ ਸੁਖੁ ਪਾਇਆ ॥ guramatee khaadhaa raj tin sukh paaeaa | Those who follow the Guru’s Teachings, who eat this food and are satisfied, find peace. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji

ਢਾਢੀ ਕਰੇ ਪਸਾਉ ਸਬਦੁ ਵਜਾਇਆ ॥ dtaadtee kare pasaau sabad vajaaeaa | His minstrel spreads His Glory, singing and vibrating the Word of His Shabad. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji

ਨਾਨਕ ਸਚੁ ਸਾਲਾਹਿ ਪੂਰਾ ਪਾਇਆ ॥੨੭॥ ਸੁਧੁ naanak sach saalaeh pooraa paaeaa |27| sudh O Nanak, praising the True Lord, I have obtained His Perfection. ||27||Sudh|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
