ਸਚੈ ਸਬਦਿ ਨੀਸਾਣਿ ਠਾਕ ਨ ਪਾਈਐ ॥ sachai sabad neesaan tthaak na paaeeai | No one blocks the way of those who are blessed with the Banner of the True Word of the Shabad. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਸਚੁ ਸੁਣਿ ਬੁਝਿ ਵਖਾਣਿ ਮਹਲਿ ਬੁਲਾਈਐ ॥੧੮॥ sach sun bujh vakhaan mehal bulaaeeai |18| Hearing, understanding and speaking Truth, one is called to the Mansion of the Lord’s Presence. ||18|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji

ਪਹਿਰਾ ਅਗਨਿ ਹਿਵੈ ਘਰੁ ਬਾਧਾ ਭੋਜਨੁ ਸਾਰੁ ਕਰਾਈ ॥ pahiraa agan hivai ghar baadhaa bhojan saar karaaee | If I dressed myself in fire, and built my house of snow, and made iron my food; - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਸਗਲੇ ਦੂਖ ਪਾਣੀ ਕਰਿ ਪੀਵਾ ਧਰਤੀ ਹਾਕ ਚਲਾਈ ॥ sagale dookh paanee kar peevaa dharatee haak chalaaee | and if I were to drink in all pain like water, and drive the entire earth before me; - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਧਰਿ ਤਾਰਾਜੀ ਅੰਬਰੁ ਤੋਲੀ ਪਿਛੈ ਟੰਕੁ ਚੜਾਈ ॥ dhar taaraajee anbar tolee pichhai ttank charraaee | and if I were to place the earth upon a scale and balance it with a single copper coin; - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਏਵਡੁ ਵਧਾ ਮਾਵਾ ਨਾਹੀ ਸਭਸੈ ਨਥਿ ਚਲਾਈ ॥ evadd vadhaa maavaa naahee sabhasai nath chalaaee | and if I were to become so great that I could not be contained, and if I were to control and lead all; - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਏਤਾ ਤਾਣੁ ਹੋਵੈ ਮਨ ਅੰਦਰਿ ਕਰੀ ਭਿ ਆਖਿ ਕਰਾਈ ॥ etaa taan hovai man andar karee bhi aakh karaaee | and if I were to possess so much power within my mind that I could cause others to do my bidding-so what? - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਜੇਵਡੁ ਸਾਹਿਬੁ ਤੇਵਡ ਦਾਤੀ ਦੇ ਦੇ ਕਰੇ ਰਜਾਈ ॥ jevadd saahib tevadd daatee de de kare rajaaee | As Great as our Lord and Master is, so great are His gifts. He bestows them according to His Will. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਨਾਨਕ ਨਦਰਿ ਕਰੇ ਜਿਸੁ ਉਪਰਿ ਸਚਿ ਨਾਮਿ ਵਡਿਆਈ ॥੧॥ naanak nadar kare jis upar sach naam vaddiaaee |1| O Nanak, those upon whom the Lord casts His Glance of Grace, obtain the glorious greatness of the True Name. ||1|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji

ਆਖਣੁ ਆਖਿ ਨ ਰਜਿਆ ਸੁਨਣਿ ਨ ਰਜੇ ਕੰਨ ॥ aakhan aakh na rajiaa sunan na raje kan | The mouth is not satisfied by speaking, and the ears are not satisfied by hearing. - Guru Angad Dev Ji
ਅਖੀ ਦੇਖਿ ਨ ਰਜੀਆ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਹਕ ਇਕ ਵੰਨ ॥ akhee dekh na rajeea gun gaahak ik van | The eyes are not satisfied by seeing-each organ seeks out one sensory quality. - Guru Angad Dev Ji
ਭੁਖਿਆ ਭੁਖ ਨ ਉਤਰੈ ਗਲੀ ਭੁਖ ਨ ਜਾਇ ॥ bhukhiaa bhukh na utarai galee bhukh na jaae | The hunger of the hungry is not appeased; by mere words, hunger is not relieved. - Guru Angad Dev Ji
ਨਾਨਕ ਭੁਖਾ ਤਾ ਰਜੈ ਜਾ ਗੁਣ ਕਹਿ ਗੁਣੀ ਸਮਾਇ ॥੨॥ naanak bhukhaa taa rajai jaa gun keh gunee samaae |2| O Nanak, hunger is relieved only when one utters the Glorious Praises of the Praiseworthy Lord. ||2|| - Guru Angad Dev Ji
ਪਉੜੀ ॥ paurree | Pauree: - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਵਿਣੁ ਸਚੇ ਸਭੁ ਕੂੜੁ ਕੂੜੁ ਕਮਾਈਐ ॥ vin sache sabh koorr koorr kamaaeeai | Without the True One, all are false, and all practice falsehood. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਵਿਣੁ ਸਚੇ ਕੂੜਿਆਰੁ ਬੰਨਿ ਚਲਾਈਐ ॥ vin sache koorriaar ban chalaaeeai | Without the True One, the false ones are bound and gagged and driven off. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਵਿਣੁ ਸਚੇ ਤਨੁ ਛਾਰੁ ਛਾਰੁ ਰਲਾਈਐ ॥ vin sache tan chhaar chhaar ralaaeeai | Without the True One, the body is just ashes, and it mingles again with ashes. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਵਿਣੁ ਸਚੇ ਸਭ ਭੁਖ ਜਿ ਪੈਝੈ ਖਾਈਐ ॥ vin sache sabh bhukh ji paijhai khaaeeai | Without the True Ome, all food and clothes are unsatisfying. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਵਿਣੁ ਸਚੇ ਦਰਬਾਰੁ ਕੂੜਿ ਨ ਪਾਈਐ ॥ vin sache darabaar koorr na paaeeai | Without the True One, the false ones do not attain the Lord’s Court. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਕੂੜੈ ਲਾਲਚਿ ਲਗਿ ਮਹਲੁ ਖੁਆਈਐ ॥ koorrai laalach lag mehal khuaaeeai | Attached to false attachments, the Mansion of the Lord’s Presence is lost. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਸਭੁ ਜਗੁ ਠਗਿਓ ਠਗਿ ਆਈਐ ਜਾਈਐ ॥ sabh jag tthagio tthag aaeeai jaaeeai | The whole world is deceived by deception, coming and going in reincarnation. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਤਨ ਮਹਿ ਤ੍ਰਿਸਨਾ ਅਗਿ ਸਬਦਿ ਬੁਝਾਈਐ ॥੧੯॥ tan meh trisanaa ag sabad bujhaaeeai |19| Within the body is the fire of desire; through the Word of the Shabad, it is quenched. ||19|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji

ਨਾਨਕ ਗੁਰੁ ਸੰਤੋਖੁ ਰੁਖੁ ਧਰਮੁ ਫੁਲੁ ਫਲ ਗਿਆਨੁ ॥ naanak gur santokh rukh dharam ful fal giaan | O Nanak, the Guru is the tree of contentment, with flowers of faith, and fruits of spiritual wisdom. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਰਸਿ ਰਸਿਆ ਹਰਿਆ ਸਦਾ ਪਕੈ ਕਰਮਿ ਧਿਆਨਿ ॥ ras rasiaa hariaa sadaa pakai karam dhiaan | Watered with the Lord’s Love, it remains forever green; through the karma of good deeds and meditation, it ripens. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਪਤਿ ਕੇ ਸਾਦ ਖਾਦਾ ਲਹੈ ਦਾਨਾ ਕੈ ਸਿਰਿ ਦਾਨੁ ॥੧॥ pat ke saad khaadaa lahai daanaa kai sir daan |1| Honor is obtained by eating this tasty dish; of all gifts, this is the greatest gift. ||1|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji

ਸੁਇਨੇ ਕਾ ਬਿਰਖੁ ਪਤ ਪਰਵਾਲਾ ਫੁਲ ਜਵੇਹਰ ਲਾਲ ॥ sueine kaa birakh pat paravaalaa ful javehar laal | The Guru is the tree of gold, with leaves of coral, and blossoms of jewels and rubies. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਤਿਤੁ ਫਲ ਰਤਨ ਲਗਹਿ ਮੁਖਿ ਭਾਖਿਤ ਹਿਰਦੈ ਰਿਦੈ ਨਿਹਾਲੁ ॥ tit fal ratan lageh mukh bhaakhit hiradai ridai nihaal | The Words from His Mouth are fruits of jewels. Within His Heart, He beholds the Lord. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਨਾਨਕ ਕਰਮੁ ਹੋਵੈ ਮੁਖਿ ਮਸਤਕਿ ਲਿਖਿਆ ਹੋਵੈ ਲੇਖੁ ॥ naanak karam hovai mukh masatak likhiaa hovai lekh | O Nanak, He is obtained by those, upon whose faces and foreheads such pre-recorded destiny is written. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਅਠਿਸਠਿ ਤੀਰਥ ਗੁਰ ਕੀ ਚਰਣੀ ਪੂਜੈ ਸਦਾ ਵਿਸੇਖੁ ॥ atthisatth teerath gur kee charanee poojai sadaa visekh | The sixty-eight sacred shrines of pilgrimage are contained in the constant worship of the feet of the Exalted Guru. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਹੰਸੁ ਹੇਤੁ ਲੋਭੁ ਕੋਪੁ ਚਾਰੇ ਨਦੀਆ ਅਗਿ ॥ hans het lobh kop chaare nadeea ag | Cruelty, material attachment, greed and anger are the four rivers of fire. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਪਵਹਿ ਦਝਹਿ ਨਾਨਕਾ ਤਰੀਐ ਕਰਮੀ ਲਗਿ ॥੨॥ paveh dajheh naanakaa tareeai karamee lag |2| Falling into them, one is burned, O Nanak! One is saved only by holding tight to good deeds. ||2|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਪਉੜੀ ॥ paurree | Pauree: - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਜੀਵਦਿਆ ਮਰੁ ਮਾਰਿ ਨ ਪਛੋਤਾਈਐ ॥ jeevadiaa mar maar na pachhotaaeeai | While you are alive, conquer death, and you shall have no regrets in the end. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਝੂਠਾ ਇਹੁ ਸੰਸਾਰੁ ਕਿਨਿ ਸਮਝਾਈਐ ॥ jhootthaa ihu sansaar kin samajhaaeeai | This world is false, but only a few understand this. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਸਚਿ ਨ ਧਰੇ ਪਿਆਰੁ ਧੰਧੈ ਧਾਈਐ ॥ sach na dhare piaar dhandhai dhaaeeai | People do not enshrine love for the Truth; they chase after worldly affairs instead. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਕਾਲੁ ਬੁਰਾ ਖੈ ਕਾਲੁ ਸਿਰਿ ਦੁਨੀਆਈਐ ॥ kaal buraa khai kaal sir duneeaeeai | The terrible time of death and annihilation hovers over the heads of the world. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਹੁਕਮੀ ਸਿਰਿ ਜੰਦਾਰੁ ਮਾਰੇ ਦਾਈਐ ॥ hukamee sir jandaar maare daaeeai | By the Hukam of the Lord’s Command, the Messenger of Death smashes his club over their heads. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਆਪੇ ਦੇਇ ਪਿਆਰੁ ਮੰਨਿ ਵਸਾਈਐ ॥ aape dee piaar man vasaaeeai | The Lord Himself gives His Love, and enshrines it within their minds. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਮੁਹਤੁ ਨ ਚਸਾ ਵਿਲੰਮੁ ਭਰੀਐ ਪਾਈਐ ॥ muhat na chasaa vilam bhareeai paaeeai | Not a moment or an instant’s delay is permitted, when one’s measure of life is full. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਗੁਰ ਪਰਸਾਦੀ ਬੁਝਿ ਸਚਿ ਸਮਾਈਐ ॥੨੦॥ gur parasaadee bujh sach samaaeeai |20| By Guru’s Grace, one comes to know the True One, and is absorbed into Him. ||20|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji

ਤੁਮੀ ਤੁਮਾ ਵਿਸੁ ਅਕੁ ਧਤੂਰਾ ਨਿਮੁ ਫਲੁ ॥ tumee tumaa vis ak dhatooraa nim fal | Bitter melon, swallow-wort, thorn-apple and nim fruit - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਮਨਿ ਮੁਖਿ ਵਸਹਿ ਤਿਸੁ ਜਿਸੁ ਤੂੰ ਚਿਤਿ ਨ ਆਵਹੀ ॥ man mukh vaseh tis jis toon chit na aavahee | these bitter poisons lodge in the minds and mouths of those who do not remember You - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਨਾਨਕ ਕਹੀਐ ਕਿਸੁ ਹੰਢਨਿ ਕਰਮਾ ਬਾਹਰੇ ॥੧॥ naanak kaheeai kis handtan karamaa baahare |1| O Nanak, how shall I tell them this? Without the karma of good deeds, they are only destroying themselves. ||1|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
