ਖੁੰਢਾ ਅੰਦਰਿ ਰਖਿ ਕੈ ਦੇਨਿ ਸੁ ਮਲ ਸਜਾਇ ॥ khundtaa andar rakh kai den su mal sajaae | and then, it is placed between the wooden rollers and crushed. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਰਸੁ ਕਸੁ ਟਟਰਿ ਪਾਈਐ ਤਪੈ ਤੈ ਵਿਲਲਾਇ ॥ ras kas ttattar paaeeai tapai tai vilalaae | What punishment is inflicted upon it! Its juice is extracted and placed in the cauldron; as it is heated, it groans and cries out. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਭੀ ਸੋ ਫੋਗੁ ਸਮਾਲੀਐ ਦਿਚੈ ਅਗਿ ਜਾਲਾਇ ॥ bhee so fog samaaleeai dichai ag jaalaae | And then, the crushed cane is collected and burnt in the fire below. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਨਾਨਕ ਮਿਠੈ ਪਤਰੀਐ ਵੇਖਹੁ ਲੋਕਾ ਆਇ ॥੨॥ naanak mitthai patareeai vekhahu lokaa aae |2| Nanak: come, people, and see how the sweet sugar-cane is treated! ||2|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਪਵੜੀ ॥ pavarree | Pauree: - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਇਕਨਾ ਮਰਣੁ ਨ ਚਿਤਿ ਆਸ ਘਣੇਰਿਆ ॥ eikanaa maran na chit aas ghaneriaa | Some do not think of death; they entertain great hopes. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਮਰਿ ਮਰਿ ਜੰਮਹਿ ਨਿਤ ਕਿਸੈ ਨ ਕੇਰਿਆ ॥ mar mar jameh nit kisai na keriaa | They die, and are re-born, and die, over and over again. They are of no use at all! - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਆਪਨੜੈ ਮਨਿ ਚਿਤਿ ਕਹਨਿ ਚੰਗੇਰਿਆ ॥ aapanarrai man chit kehan changeriaa | In their conscious minds, they call themselves good. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਜਮਰਾਜੈ ਨਿਤ ਨਿਤ ਮਨਮੁਖ ਹੇਰਿਆ ॥ jamaraajai nit nit manamukh heriaa | The King of the Angels of Death hunts down those self-willed manmukhs, over and over again. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਮਨਮੁਖ ਲੂਣ ਹਾਰਾਮ ਕਿਆ ਨ ਜਾਣਿਆ ॥ manamukh loon haaraam kiaa na jaaniaa | The manmukhs are false to their own selves; they feel no gratitude for what they have been given. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਬਧੇ ਕਰਨਿ ਸਲਾਮ ਖਸਮ ਨ ਭਾਣਿਆ ॥ badhe karan salaam khasam na bhaaniaa | Those who merely perform rituals of worship are not pleasing to their Lord and Master. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਸਚੁ ਮਿਲੈ ਮੁਖਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਭਾਵਸੀ ॥ sach milai mukh naam saahib bhaavasee | Those who attain the True Lord and chant His Name are pleasing to the Lord. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਕਰਸਨਿ ਤਖਤਿ ਸਲਾਮੁ ਲਿਖਿਆ ਪਾਵਸੀ ॥੧੧॥ karasan takhat salaam likhiaa paavasee |11| They worship the Lord and bow at His Throne. They fulfill their pre-ordained destiny. ||11|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji

ਮਛੀ ਤਾਰੂ ਕਿਆ ਕਰੇ ਪੰਖੀ ਕਿਆ ਆਕਾਸੁ ॥ machhee taaroo kiaa kare pankhee kiaa aakaas | What can deep water do to a fish? What can the vast sky do to a bird? - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਪਥਰ ਪਾਲਾ ਕਿਆ ਕਰੇ ਖੁਸਰੇ ਕਿਆ ਘਰ ਵਾਸੁ ॥ pathar paalaa kiaa kare khusare kiaa ghar vaas | What can cold do to a stone? What is married life to a eunuch? - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਕੁਤੇ ਚੰਦਨੁ ਲਾਈਐ ਭੀ ਸੋ ਕੁਤੀ ਧਾਤੁ ॥ kute chandan laaeeai bhee so kutee dhaat | You may apply sandalwood oil to a dog, but he will still be a dog. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਬੋਲਾ ਜੇ ਸਮਝਾਈਐ ਪੜੀਅਹਿ ਸਿੰਮ੍ਰਿਤਿ ਪਾਠ ॥ bolaa je samajhaaeeai parreeeh sinmrit paatth | You may try to teach a deaf person by reading the Simritees to him, but how will he learn? - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਅੰਧਾ ਚਾਨਣਿ ਰਖੀਐ ਦੀਵੇ ਬਲਹਿ ਪਚਾਸ ॥ andhaa chaanan rakheeai deeve baleh pachaas | You may place a light before a blind man and burn fifty lamps, but how will he see? - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਚਉਣੇ ਸੁਇਨਾ ਪਾਈਐ ਚੁਣਿ ਚੁਣਿ ਖਾਵੈ ਘਾਸੁ ॥ chaune sueinaa paaeeai chun chun khaavai ghaas | You may place gold before a herd of cattle, but they will pick out the grass to eat. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਲੋਹਾ ਮਾਰਣਿ ਪਾਈਐ ਢਹੈ ਨ ਹੋਇ ਕਪਾਸ ॥ lohaa maaran paaeeai dtahai na hoe kapaas | You may add flux to iron and melt it, but it will not become soft like cotton. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਨਾਨਕ ਮੂਰਖ ਏਹਿ ਗੁਣ ਬੋਲੇ ਸਦਾ ਵਿਣਾਸੁ ॥੧॥ naanak moorakh ehi gun bole sadaa vinaas |1| O Nanak, this is the nature of a fool-everything he speaks is useless and wasted. ||1|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji

ਕੈਹਾ ਕੰਚਨੁ ਤੁਟੈ ਸਾਰੁ ॥ kaihaa kanchan tuttai saar | When pieces of bronze or gold or iron break, - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਅਗਨੀ ਗੰਢੁ ਪਾਏ ਲੋਹਾਰੁ ॥ aganee gandt paae lohaar | the metal-smith welds them together again in the fire, and the bond is established. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਗੋਰੀ ਸੇਤੀ ਤੁਟੈ ਭਤਾਰੁ ॥ goree setee tuttai bhataar | If a husband leaves his wife, - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਪੁਤਂੀ ਗੰਢੁ ਪਵੈ ਸੰਸਾਰਿ ॥ putanee gandt pavai sansaar | their children may bring them back together in the world, and the bond is established. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਰਾਜਾ ਮੰਗੈ ਦਿਤੈ ਗੰਢੁ ਪਾਇ ॥ raajaa mangai ditai gandt paae | When the king makes a demand, and it is met, the bond is established. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਭੁਖਿਆ ਗੰਢੁ ਪਵੈ ਜਾ ਖਾਇ ॥ bhukhiaa gandt pavai jaa khaae | When the hungry man eats, he is satisfied, and the bond is established. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਕਾਲਾ ਗੰਢੁ ਨਦੀਆ ਮੀਹ ਝੋਲ ॥ kaalaa gandt nadeea meeh jhol | In the famine, the rain fills the streams to overflowing, and the bond is established. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਗੰਢੁ ਪਰੀਤੀ ਮਿਠੇ ਬੋਲ ॥ gandt pareetee mitthe bol | There is a bond between love and words of sweetness. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਬੇਦਾ ਗੰਢੁ ਬੋਲੇ ਸਚੁ ਕੋਇ ॥ bedaa gandt bole sach koe | When one speaks the Truth, a bond is established with the Holy Scriptures. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਮੁਇਆ ਗੰਢੁ ਨੇਕੀ ਸਤੁ ਹੋਇ ॥ mueaa gandt nekee sat hoe | Through goodness and truth, the dead establish a bond with the living. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਏਤੁ ਗੰਢਿ ਵਰਤੈ ਸੰਸਾਰੁ ॥ et gandt varatai sansaar | Such are the bonds which prevail in the world. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਮੂਰਖ ਗੰਢੁ ਪਵੈ ਮੁਹਿ ਮਾਰ ॥ moorakh gandt pavai muhi maar | The fool establishes his bonds only when he is slapped in the face. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਨਾਨਕੁ ਆਖੈ ਏਹੁ ਬੀਚਾਰੁ ॥ naanak aakhai ehu beechaar | Nanak says this after deep reflection: - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਸਿਫਤੀ ਗੰਢੁ ਪਵੈ ਦਰਬਾਰਿ ॥੨॥ sifatee gandt pavai darabaar |2| through the Lord’s Praise, we establish a bond with His Court. ||2|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਪਉੜੀ ॥ paurree | Pauree: - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਆਪੇ ਕੁਦਰਤਿ ਸਾਜਿ ਕੈ ਆਪੇ ਕਰੇ ਬੀਚਾਰੁ ॥ aape kudarat saaj kai aape kare beechaar | He Himself created and adorned the Universe, and He Himself contemplates it. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਇਕਿ ਖੋਟੇ ਇਕਿ ਖਰੇ ਆਪੇ ਪਰਖਣਹਾਰੁ ॥ eik khotte ik khare aape parakhanahaar | Some are counterfeit, and some are genuine. He Himself is the Appraiser. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਖਰੇ ਖਜਾਨੈ ਪਾਈਅਹਿ ਖੋਟੇ ਸਟੀਅਹਿ ਬਾਹਰ ਵਾਰਿ ॥ khare khajaanai paaeeeh khotte satteeeh baahar vaar | The genuine are placed in His Treasury, while the counterfeit are thrown away. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਖੋਟੇ ਸਚੀ ਦਰਗਹ ਸੁਟੀਅਹਿ ਕਿਸੁ ਆਗੈ ਕਰਹਿ ਪੁਕਾਰ ॥ khotte sachee daragah sutteeeh kis aagai kareh pukaar | The counterfeit are thrown out of the True Court-unto whom should they complain? - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਪਿਛੈ ਭਜਿ ਪਵਹਿ ਏਹਾ ਕਰਣੀ ਸਾਰੁ ॥ satigur pichhai bhaj paveh ehaa karanee saar | They should worship and follow the True Guru-this is the lifestyle of excellence. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਖੋਟਿਅਹੁ ਖਰੇ ਕਰੇ ਸਬਦਿ ਸਵਾਰਣਹਾਰੁ ॥ satigur khottiahu khare kare sabad savaaranahaar | The True Guru converts the counterfeit into genuine; through the Word of the Shabad, He embellishes and exalts us. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਸਚੀ ਦਰਗਹ ਮੰਨੀਅਨਿ ਗੁਰ ਕੈ ਪ੍ਰੇਮ ਪਿਆਰਿ ॥ sachee daragah maneean gur kai prem piaar | Those who have enshrined love and affection for the Guru, are honored in the True Court. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਗਣਤ ਤਿਨਾ ਦੀ ਕੋ ਕਿਆ ਕਰੇ ਜੋ ਆਪਿ ਬਖਸੇ ਕਰਤਾਰਿ ॥੧੨॥ ganat tinaa dee ko kiaa kare jo aap bakhase karataar |12| Who can estimate the value of those who have been forgiven by the Creator Lord Himself? ||12|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji

ਹਮ ਜੇਰ ਜਿਮੀ ਦੁਨੀਆ ਪੀਰਾ ਮਸਾਇਕਾ ਰਾਇਆ ॥ ham jer jimee duneea peeraa masaaeikaa raaeaa | All the spiritual teachers, their disciples and the rulers of the world shall be buried under the ground. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਮੇ ਰਵਦਿ ਬਾਦਿਸਾਹਾ ਅਫਜੂ ਖੁਦਾਇ ॥ me ravad baadisaahaa afajoo khudaae | The emperors shall also pass away; God alone is Eternal. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਏਕ ਤੂਹੀ ਏਕ ਤੁਹੀ ॥੧॥ ek toohee ek tuhee |1| You alone, Lord, You alone. ||1|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji

ਨ ਸਿਧ ਸਾਧਿਕਾ ਧਰਾ ॥ n sidh saadhikaa dharaa | Nor the Siddhas, nor the seekers shall remain on the earth. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਅਸਤਿ ਏਕ ਦਿਗਰਿ ਕੁਈ ॥ asat ek digar kuee | Who else is there? - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
