ਮਃ ੧ ॥ mahalaa 1 | First Mehl - Guru Nanak Dev Ji

ਹਕੁ ਪਰਾਇਆ ਨਾਨਕਾ ਉਸੁ ਸੂਅਰ ਉਸੁ ਗਾਇ ॥ hak paraaeaa naanakaa us sooar us gaae | : To take what rightfully belongs to another, is like a Muslim eating pork, or a Hindu eating beef. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji

ਗੁਰੁ ਪੀਰੁ ਹਾਮਾ ਤਾ ਭਰੇ ਜਾ ਮੁਰਦਾਰੁ ਨ ਖਾਇ ॥ gur peer haamaa taa bhare jaa muradaar na khaae | Our Guru, our Spiritual Guide, stands by us, if we do not eat those carcasses. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji

ਗਲੀ ਭਿਸਤਿ ਨ ਜਾਈਐ ਛੁਟੈ ਸਚੁ ਕਮਾਇ ॥ galee bhisat na jaaeeai chhuttai sach kamaae | By mere talk, people do not earn passage to Heaven. Salvation comes only from the practice of Truth. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji

ਮਾਰਣ ਪਾਹਿ ਹਰਾਮ ਮਹਿ ਹੋਇ ਹਲਾਲੁ ਨ ਜਾਇ ॥ maaran paeh haraam meh hoe halaal na jaae | By adding spices to forbidden foods, they are not made acceptable. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji

ਨਾਨਕ ਗਲੀ ਕੂੜੀਈ ਕੂੜੋ ਪਲੈ ਪਾਇ ॥੨॥ naanak galee koorreeee koorro palai paae |2| O Nanak, from false talk, only falsehood is obtained. ||2|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji

ਮਃ ੧ ॥ mahalaa 1 | First Mehl: - Guru Nanak Dev Ji

ਪੰਜਿ ਨਿਵਾਜਾ ਵਖਤ ਪੰਜਿ ਪੰਜਾ ਪੰਜੇ ਨਾਉ ॥ panj nivaajaa vakhat panj panjaa panje naau | There are five prayers and five times of day for prayer; the five have five names. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji

ਪਹਿਲਾ ਸਚੁ ਹਲਾਲ ਦੁਇ ਤੀਜਾ ਖੈਰ ਖੁਦਾਇ ॥ pahilaa sach halaal due teejaa khair khudaae | Let the first be truthfulness, the second honest living, and the third charity in the Name of God. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji

ਚਉਥੀ ਨੀਅਤਿ ਰਾਸਿ ਮਨੁ ਪੰਜਵੀ ਸਿਫਤਿ ਸਨਾਇ ॥ chauthee neeat raas man panjavee sifat sanaae | Let the fourth be good will to all, and the fifth the praise of the Lord. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji

ਕਰਣੀ ਕਲਮਾ ਆਖਿ ਕੈ ਤਾ ਮੁਸਲਮਾਣੁ ਸਦਾਇ ॥ karanee kalamaa aakh kai taa musalamaan sadaae | Repeat the prayer of good deeds, and then, you may call yourself a Muslim. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji

ਨਾਨਕ ਜੇਤੇ ਕੂੜਿਆਰ ਕੂੜੈ ਕੂੜੀ ਪਾਇ ॥੩॥ naanak jete koorriaar koorrai koorree paae |3| O Nanak, the false obtain falsehood, and only falsehood. ||3|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji

ਪਉੜੀ ॥ paurree | Pauree: - Guru Nanak Dev Ji

ਇਕਿ ਰਤਨ ਪਦਾਰਥ ਵਣਜਦੇ ਇਕਿ ਕਚੈ ਦੇ ਵਾਪਾਰਾ ॥ eik ratan padaarath vanajade ik kachai de vaapaaraa | Some trade in priceless jewels, while others deal in mere glass. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji

ਸਤਿਗੁਰਿ ਤੁਠੈ ਪਾਈਅਨਿ ਅੰਦਰਿ ਰਤਨ ਭੰਡਾਰਾ ॥ satigur tutthai paaeean andar ratan bhanddaaraa | When the True Guru is pleased, we find the treasure of the jewel, deep within the self. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji

ਵਿਣੁ ਗੁਰ ਕਿਨੈ ਨ ਲਧਿਆ ਅੰਧੇ ਭਉਕਿ ਮੁਏ ਕੂੜਿਆਰਾ ॥ vin gur kinai na ladhiaa andhe bhauk mue koorriaaraa | Without the Guru, no one has found this treasure. The blind and the false have died in their endless wanderings. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji

ਮਨਮੁਖ ਦੂਜੈ ਪਚਿ ਮੁਏ ਨਾ ਬੂਝਹਿ ਵੀਚਾਰਾ ॥ manamukh doojai pach mue naa boojheh veechaaraa | The self-willed manmukhs putrefy and die in duality. They do not understand contemplative meditation. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji

ਇਕਸੁ ਬਾਝਹੁ ਦੂਜਾ ਕੋ ਨਹੀ ਕਿਸੁ ਅਗੈ ਕਰਹਿ ਪੁਕਾਰਾ ॥ eikas baajhahu doojaa ko nahee kis agai kareh pukaaraa | Without the One Lord, there is no other at all. Unto whom should they complain? - Guru Nanak Dev Ji

ਇਕਿ ਨਿਰਧਨ ਸਦਾ ਭਉਕਦੇ ਇਕਨਾ ਭਰੇ ਤੁਜਾਰਾ ॥ eik niradhan sadaa bhaukade ikanaa bhare tujaaraa | Some are destitute, and wander around endlessly, while others have storehouses of wealth. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji

ਵਿਣੁ ਨਾਵੈ ਹੋਰੁ ਧਨੁ ਨਾਹੀ ਹੋਰੁ ਬਿਖਿਆ ਸਭੁ ਛਾਰਾ ॥ vin naavai hor dhan naahee hor bikhiaa sabh chhaaraa | Without God’s Name, there is no other wealth. Everything else is just poison and ashes. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji

ਨਾਨਕ ਆਪਿ ਕਰਾਏ ਕਰੇ ਆਪਿ ਹੁਕਮਿ ਸਵਾਰਣਹਾਰਾ ॥੭॥ naanak aap karaae kare aap hukam savaaranahaaraa |7| O Nanak, the Lord Himself acts, and causes others to act; by the Hukam of His Command, we are embellished and exalted. ||7|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji

ਸਲੋਕੁ ਮਃ ੧ ॥ salok mahalaa 1 | Salok, First Mehl: - Guru Nanak Dev Ji

ਮੁਸਲਮਾਣੁ ਕਹਾਵਣੁ ਮੁਸਕਲੁ ਜਾ ਹੋਇ ਤਾ ਮੁਸਲਮਾਣੁ ਕਹਾਵੈ ॥ musalamaan kahaavan musakal jaa hoe taa musalamaan kahaavai | It is difficult to be called a Muslim; if one is truly a Muslim, then he may be called one. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji

ਅਵਲਿ ਅਉਲਿ ਦੀਨੁ ਕਰਿ ਮਿਠਾ ਮਸਕਲ ਮਾਨਾ ਮਾਲੁ ਮੁਸਾਵੈ ॥ aval aaul deen kar mitthaa masakal maanaa maal musaavai | First, let him savor the religion of the Prophet as sweet; then, let his pride of his possessions be scraped away. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji

ਹੋਇ ਮੁਸਲਿਮੁ ਦੀਨ ਮੁਹਾਣੈ ਮਰਣ ਜੀਵਣ ਕਾ ਭਰਮੁ ਚੁਕਾਵੈ ॥ hoe musalim deen muhaanai maran jeevan kaa bharam chukaavai | Becoming a true Muslim, a disciple of the faith of Mohammed, let him put aside the delusion of death and life. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji

ਰਬ ਕੀ ਰਜਾਇ ਮੰਨੇ ਸਿਰ ਉਪਰਿ ਕਰਤਾ ਮੰਨੇ ਆਪੁ ਗਵਾਵੈ ॥ rab kee rajaae mane sir upar karataa mane aap gavaavai | As he submits to God’s Will, and surrenders to the Creator, he is rid of selfishness and conceit. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji

ਤਉ ਨਾਨਕ ਸਰਬ ਜੀਆ ਮਿਹਰੰਮਤਿ ਹੋਇ ਤ ਮੁਸਲਮਾਣੁ ਕਹਾਵੈ ॥੧॥ tau naanak sarab jeea miharamat hoe ta musalamaan kahaavai |1| And when, O Nanak, he is merciful to all beings, only then shall he be called a Muslim. ||1|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji

ਮਹਲਾ ੪ ॥ mahalaa 4 | Fourth Mehl: - Guru Ramdas Ji

ਪਰਹਰਿ ਕਾਮ ਕ੍ਰੋਧੁ ਝੂਠੁ ਨਿੰਦਾ ਤਜਿ ਮਾਇਆ ਅਹੰਕਾਰੁ ਚੁਕਾਵੈ ॥ parahar kaam krodh jhootth nindaa taj maaeaa ahankaar chukaavai | Renounce sexual desire, anger, falsehood and slander; forsake Maya and eliminate egotistical pride. - Guru Ramdas Ji

ਤਜਿ ਕਾਮੁ ਕਾਮਿਨੀ ਮੋਹੁ ਤਜੈ ਤਾ ਅੰਜਨ ਮਾਹਿ ਨਿਰੰਜਨੁ ਪਾਵੈ ॥ taj kaam kaaminee mohu tajai taa anjan maeh niranjan paavai | Renounce sexual desire and promiscuity, and give up emotional attachment. Only then shall you obtain the Immaculate Lord amidst the darkness of the world. - Guru Ramdas Ji

ਤਜਿ ਮਾਨੁ ਅਭਿਮਾਨੁ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਿ ਸੁਤ ਦਾਰਾ ਤਜਿ ਪਿਆਸ ਆਸ ਰਾਮ ਲਿਵ ਲਾਵੈ ॥ taj maan abhimaan preet sut daaraa taj piaas aas raam liv laavai | Renounce selfishness, conceit and arrogant pride, and your love for your children and spouse. Abandon your thirsty hopes and desires, and embrace love for the Lord. - Guru Ramdas Ji

ਨਾਨਕ ਸਾਚਾ ਮਨਿ ਵਸੈ ਸਾਚ ਸਬਦਿ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮਿ ਸਮਾਵੈ ॥੨॥ naanak saachaa man vasai saach sabad har naam samaavai |2| O Nanak, the True One shall come to dwell in your mind. Through the True Word of the Shabad, you shall be absorbed in the Name of the Lord. ||2|| - Guru Ramdas Ji

ਪਉੜੀ ॥ paurree | Pauree: - Guru Nanak Dev Ji

ਰਾਜੇ ਰਯਤਿ ਸਿਕਦਾਰ ਕੋਇ ਨ ਰਹਸੀਓ ॥ raaje rayat sikadaar koe na rahaseeo | Neither the kings, nor their subjects, nor the leaders shall remain. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji

ਹਟ ਪਟਣ ਬਾਜਾਰ ਹੁਕਮੀ ਢਹਸੀਓ ॥ hatt pattan baajaar hukamee dtahaseeo | The shops, the cities and the streets shall eventually disintegrate, by the Hukam of the Lord’s Command. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji

ਪਕੇ ਬੰਕ ਦੁਆਰ ਮੂਰਖੁ ਜਾਣੈ ਆਪਣੇ ॥ pake bank duaar moorakh jaanai aapane | Those solid and beautiful mansions-the fools think that they belong to them. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji

ਦਰਬਿ ਭਰੇ ਭੰਡਾਰ ਰੀਤੇ ਇਕਿ ਖਣੇ ॥ darab bhare bhanddaar reete ik khane | The treasure-houses, filled with wealth, shall be emptied out in an instant. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji

ਤਾਜੀ ਰਥ ਤੁਖਾਰ ਹਾਥੀ ਪਾਖਰੇ ॥ taajee rath tukhaar haathee paakhare | The horses, chariots, camels and elephants, with all their decorations; - Guru Nanak Dev Ji

ਬਾਗ ਮਿਲਖ ਘਰ ਬਾਰ ਕਿਥੈ ਸਿ ਆਪਣੇ ॥ baag milakh ghar baar kithai si aapane | the gardens, lands, houses, tents, soft beds and satin pavilions - - Guru Nanak Dev Ji

ਤੰਬੂ ਪਲੰਘ ਨਿਵਾਰ ਸਰਾਇਚੇ ਲਾਲਤੀ ॥ tanboo palangh nivaar saraaeiche laalatee | Oh, where are those things, which they believe to be their own? - Guru Nanak Dev Ji

ਨਾਨਕ ਸਚ ਦਾਤਾਰੁ ਸਿਨਾਖਤੁ ਕੁਦਰਤੀ ॥੮॥ naanak sach daataar sinaakhat kudaratee |8| O Nanak, the True One is the Giver of all; He is revealed through His All-powerful Creative Nature. ||8|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji

ਸਲੋਕੁ ਮਃ ੧ ॥ salok mahalaa 1 | Salok, First Mehl: - Guru Nanak Dev Ji

ਨਦੀਆ ਹੋਵਹਿ ਧੇਣਵਾ ਸੁੰਮ ਹੋਵਹਿ ਦੁਧੁ ਘੀਉ ॥ nadeea hoveh dhenavaa sunm hoveh dudh gheeo | If the rivers became cows, giving milk, and the spring water became milk and ghee; - Guru Nanak Dev Ji

ਸਗਲੀ ਧਰਤੀ ਸਕਰ ਹੋਵੈ ਖੁਸੀ ਕਰੇ ਨਿਤ ਜੀਉ ॥ sagalee dharatee sakar hovai khusee kare nit jeeo | If all the earth became sugar, to continually excite the mind; - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
