ਮਾਝ ਮਹਲਾ ੩ ॥ maajh mahalaa 3 | Maajh, Third Mehl: - Guru Amardas Ji

ਮਨਮੁਖ ਪੜਹਿ ਪੰਡਿਤ ਕਹਾਵਹਿ ॥ manamukh parreh panddit kahaaveh | The self-willed manmukhs read and recite; they are called Pandits-spiritual scholars. - Guru Amardas Ji

ਦੂਜੈ ਭਾਇ ਮਹਾ ਦੁਖੁ ਪਾਵਹਿ ॥ doojai bhaae mahaa dukh paaveh | But they are in love with duality, and they suffer in terrible pain. - Guru Amardas Ji

ਬਿਖਿਆ ਮਾਤੇ ਕਿਛੁ ਸੂਝੈ ਨਾਹੀ ਫਿਰਿ ਫਿਰਿ ਜੂਨੀ ਆਵਣਿਆ ॥੧॥ bikhiaa maate kichh soojhai naahee fir fir joonee aavaniaa |1| Intoxicated with vice, they understand nothing at all. They are reincarnated, over and over again. ||1|| - Guru Amardas Ji

ਹਉ ਵਾਰੀ ਜੀਉ ਵਾਰੀ ਹਉਮੈ ਮਾਰਿ ਮਿਲਾਵਣਿਆ ॥ hau vaaree jeeo vaaree haumai maar milaavaniaa | I am a sacrifice, my soul is a sacrifice, to those who subdue their ego, and unite with the Lord. - Guru Amardas Ji

ਗੁਰ ਸੇਵਾ ਤੇ ਹਰਿ ਮਨਿ ਵਸਿਆ ਹਰਿ ਰਸੁ ਸਹਜਿ ਪੀਆਵਣਿਆ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥ gur sevaa te har man vasiaa har ras sehaj peeaavaniaa |1| rahaau | They serve the Guru, and the Lord dwells within their minds; they intuitively drink in the sublime essence of the Lord. ||1||Pause|| - Guru Amardas Ji

ਵੇਦੁ ਪੜਹਿ ਹਰਿ ਰਸੁ ਨਹੀ ਆਇਆ ॥ ved parreh har ras nahee aaeaa | The Pandits read the Vedas, but they do not obtain the Lord’s essence. - Guru Amardas Ji

ਵਾਦੁ ਵਖਾਣਹਿ ਮੋਹੇ ਮਾਇਆ ॥ vaad vakhaaneh mohe maaeaa | Intoxicated with Maya, they argue and debate. - Guru Amardas Ji

ਅਗਿਆਨਮਤੀ ਸਦਾ ਅੰਧਿਆਰਾ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਬੂਝਿ ਹਰਿ ਗਾਵਣਿਆ ॥੨॥ agiaanamatee sadaa andhiaaraa guramukh boojh har gaavaniaa |2| The foolish intellectuals are forever in spiritual darkness. The Gurmukhs understand, and sing the Glorious Praises of the Lord. ||2|| - Guru Amardas Ji

ਅਕਥੋ ਕਥੀਐ ਸਬਦਿ ਸੁਹਾਵੈ ॥ akatho katheeai sabad suhaavai | The Indescribable is described only through the beauteous Word of the Shabad. - Guru Amardas Ji

ਗੁਰਮਤੀ ਮਨਿ ਸਚੋ ਭਾਵੈ ॥ guramatee man sacho bhaavai | Through the Guru’s Teachings, the Truth becomes pleasing to the mind. - Guru Amardas Ji

ਸਚੋ ਸਚੁ ਰਵਹਿ ਦਿਨੁ ਰਾਤੀ ਇਹੁ ਮਨੁ ਸਚਿ ਰੰਗਾਵਣਿਆ ॥੩॥ sacho sach raveh din raatee ihu man sach rangaavaniaa |3| Those who speak of the truest of the true, day and night-their minds are imbued with the Truth. ||3|| - Guru Amardas Ji

ਜੋ ਸਚਿ ਰਤੇ ਤਿਨ ਸਚੋ ਭਾਵੈ ॥ jo sach rate tin sacho bhaavai | Those who are attuned to Truth, love the Truth. - Guru Amardas Ji

ਆਪੇ ਦੇਇ ਨ ਪਛੋਤਾਵੈ ॥ aape dee na pachhotaavai | The Lord Himself bestows this gift; He shall not take it back. - Guru Amardas Ji

ਗੁਰ ਕੈ ਸਬਦਿ ਸਦਾ ਸਚੁ ਜਾਤਾ ਮਿਲਿ ਸਚੇ ਸੁਖੁ ਪਾਵਣਿਆ ॥੪॥ gur kai sabad sadaa sach jaataa mil sache sukh paavaniaa |4| Through the Word of the Guru’s Shabad, the True Lord is known forever; meeting the True One, peace is found. ||4|| - Guru Amardas Ji

ਕੂੜੁ ਕੁਸਤੁ ਤਿਨਾ ਮੈਲੁ ਨ ਲਾਗੈ ॥ koorr kusat tinaa mail na laagai | The filth of fraud and falsehood does not stick to those who, - Guru Amardas Ji

ਗੁਰ ਪਰਸਾਦੀ ਅਨਦਿਨੁ ਜਾਗੈ ॥ gur parasaadee anadin jaagai | By Guru’s Grace, remain awake and aware, night and day. - Guru Amardas Ji

ਨਿਰਮਲ ਨਾਮੁ ਵਸੈ ਘਟ ਭੀਤਰਿ ਜੋਤੀ ਜੋਤਿ ਮਿਲਾਵਣਿਆ ॥੫॥ niramal naam vasai ghatt bheetar jotee jot milaavaniaa |5| The Immaculate Naam, the Name of the Lord, abides deep within their hearts; their light merges into the Light. ||5|| - Guru Amardas Ji

ਤ੍ਰੈ ਗੁਣ ਪੜਹਿ ਹਰਿ ਤਤੁ ਨ ਜਾਣਹਿ ॥ trai gun parreh har tat na jaaneh | They read about the three qualities, but they do not know the essential reality of the Lord. - Guru Amardas Ji

ਮੂਲਹੁ ਭੁਲੇ ਗੁਰਸਬਦੁ ਨ ਪਛਾਣਹਿ ॥ moolahu bhule gurasabad na pachhaaneh | They forget the Primal Lord, the Source of all, and they do not recognize the Word of the Guru’s Shabad. - Guru Amardas Ji

ਮੋਹ ਬਿਆਪੇ ਕਿਛੁ ਸੂਝੈ ਨਾਹੀ ਗੁਰਸਬਦੀ ਹਰਿ ਪਾਵਣਿਆ ॥੬॥ moh biaape kichh soojhai naahee gurasabadee har paavaniaa |6| They are engrossed in emotional attachment; they do not understand anything at all. Through the Word of the Guru’s Shabad, the Lord is found. ||6|| - Guru Amardas Ji

ਵੇਦੁ ਪੁਕਾਰੈ ਤ੍ਰਿਬਿਧਿ ਮਾਇਆ ॥ ved pukaarai tribidh maaeaa | The Vedas proclaim that Maya is of three qualities. - Guru Amardas Ji

ਮਨਮੁਖ ਨ ਬੂਝਹਿ ਦੂਜੈ ਭਾਇਆ ॥ manamukh na boojheh doojai bhaaeaa | The self-willed manmukhs, in love with duality, do not understand. - Guru Amardas Ji

ਤ੍ਰੈ ਗੁਣ ਪੜਹਿ ਹਰਿ ਏਕੁ ਨ ਜਾਣਹਿ ਬਿਨੁ ਬੂਝੇ ਦੁਖੁ ਪਾਵਣਿਆ ॥੭॥ trai gun parreh har ek na jaaneh bin boojhe dukh paavaniaa |7| They read of the three qualities, but they do not know the One Lord. Without understanding, they obtain only pain and suffering. ||7|| - Guru Amardas Ji

ਜਾ ਤਿਸੁ ਭਾਵੈ ਤਾ ਆਪਿ ਮਿਲਾਏ ॥ jaa tis bhaavai taa aap milaae | When it pleases the Lord, He unites us with Himself. - Guru Amardas Ji

ਗੁਰਸਬਦੀ ਸਹਸਾ ਦੂਖੁ ਚੁਕਾਏ ॥ gurasabadee sahasaa dookh chukaae | Through the Word of the Guru’s Shabad, skepticism and suffering are dispelled. - Guru Amardas Ji

ਨਾਨਕ ਨਾਵੈ ਕੀ ਸਚੀ ਵਡਿਆਈ ਨਾਮੋ ਮੰਨਿ ਸੁਖੁ ਪਾਵਣਿਆ ॥੮॥੩੦॥੩੧॥ naanak naavai kee sachee vaddiaaee naamo man sukh paavaniaa |8|30|31| O Nanak, True is the Greatness of the Name. Believing in the Name, peace is obtained. ||8||30||31|| - Guru Amardas Ji

ਨਿਰਗੁਣੁ ਸਰਗੁਣੁ ਆਪੇ ਸੋਈ ॥ niragun saragun aape soee | The Lord Himself is Unmanifest and Unrelated; He is Manifest and Related as well. - Guru Amardas Ji

ਤਤੁ ਪਛਾਣੈ ਸੋ ਪੰਡਿਤੁ ਹੋਈ ॥ tat pachhaanai so panddit hoee | Those who recognize this essential reality are the true Pandits, the spiritual scholars. - Guru Amardas Ji

ਆਪਿ ਤਰੈ ਸਗਲੇ ਕੁਲ ਤਾਰੈ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਮੰਨਿ ਵਸਾਵਣਿਆ ॥੧॥ aap tarai sagale kul taarai har naam man vasaavaniaa |1| They save themselves, and save all their families and ancestors as well, when they enshrine the Lord’s Name in the mind. ||1|| - Guru Amardas Ji

ਹਉ ਵਾਰੀ ਜੀਉ ਵਾਰੀ ਹਰਿ ਰਸੁ ਚਖਿ ਸਾਦੁ ਪਾਵਣਿਆ ॥ hau vaaree jeeo vaaree har ras chakh saad paavaniaa | I am a sacrifice, my soul is a sacrifice, to those who taste the essence of the Lord, and savor its taste. - Guru Amardas Ji

ਹਰਿ ਰਸੁ ਚਾਖਹਿ ਸੇ ਜਨ ਨਿਰਮਲ ਨਿਰਮਲ ਨਾਮੁ ਧਿਆਵਣਿਆ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥ har ras chaakheh se jan niramal niramal naam dhiaavaniaa |1| rahaau | Those who taste this essence of the Lord are the pure, immaculate beings. They meditate on the Immaculate Naam, the Name of the Lord. ||1||Pause|| - Guru Amardas Ji

ਸੋ ਨਿਹਕਰਮੀ ਜੋ ਸਬਦੁ ਬੀਚਾਰੇ ॥ so nihakaramee jo sabad beechaare | Those who reflect upon the Shabad are beyond karma. - Guru Amardas Ji

ਅੰਤਰਿ ਤਤੁ ਗਿਆਨਿ ਹਉਮੈ ਮਾਰੇ ॥ antar tat giaan haumai maare | They subdue their ego, and find the essence of wisdom, deep within their being. - Guru Amardas Ji

ਨਾਮੁ ਪਦਾਰਥੁ ਨਉ ਨਿਧਿ ਪਾਏ ਤ੍ਰੈ ਗੁਣ ਮੇਟਿ ਸਮਾਵਣਿਆ ॥੨॥ naam padaarath nau nidh paae trai gun mett samaavaniaa |2| They obtain the nine treasures of the wealth of the Naam. Rising above the three qualities, they merge into the Lord. ||2|| - Guru Amardas Ji

ਹਉਮੈ ਕਰੈ ਨਿਹਕਰਮੀ ਨ ਹੋਵੈ ॥ haumai karai nihakaramee na hovai | Those who act in ego do not go beyond karma. - Guru Amardas Ji

ਗੁਰ ਪਰਸਾਦੀ ਹਉਮੈ ਖੋਵੈ ॥ gur parasaadee haumai khovai | It is only by Guru’s Grace that one is rid of ego. - Guru Amardas Ji

ਅੰਤਰਿ ਬਿਬੇਕੁ ਸਦਾ ਆਪੁ ਵੀਚਾਰੇ ਗੁਰਸਬਦੀ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਵਣਿਆ ॥੩॥ antar bibek sadaa aap veechaare gurasabadee gun gaavaniaa |3| Those who have discriminating minds, continually examine their own selves. Through the Word of the Guru’s Shabad, they sing the Lord’s Glorious Praises. ||3|| - Guru Amardas Ji

ਹਰਿ ਸਰੁ ਸਾਗਰੁ ਨਿਰਮਲੁ ਸੋਈ ॥ har sar saagar niramal soee | The Lord is the most pure and sublime Ocean. - Guru Amardas Ji

ਸੰਤ ਚੁਗਹਿ ਨਿਤ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਹੋਈ ॥ sant chugeh nit guramukh hoee | The Saintly Gurmukhs continually peck at the Naam, like swans pecking at pearls in the ocean. - Guru Amardas Ji

ਇਸਨਾਨੁ ਕਰਹਿ ਸਦਾ ਦਿਨੁ ਰਾਤੀ ਹਉਮੈ ਮੈਲੁ ਚੁਕਾਵਣਿਆ ॥੪॥ eisanaan kareh sadaa din raatee haumai mail chukaavaniaa |4| They bathe in it continually, day and night, and the filth of ego is washed away. ||4|| - Guru Amardas Ji

ਨਿਰਮਲ ਹੰਸਾ ਪ੍ਰੇਮ ਪਿਆਰਿ ॥ niramal hansaa prem piaar | The pure swans, with love and affection, - Guru Amardas Ji

ਹਰਿ ਸਰਿ ਵਸੈ ਹਉਮੈ ਮਾਰਿ ॥ har sar vasai haumai maar | Dwell in the Ocean of the Lord, and subdue their ego. - Guru Amardas Ji
