ਗੁਰ ਕੈ ਸਬਦਿ ਇਹੁ ਗੁਫਾ ਵੀਚਾਰੇ ॥ gur kai sabad ihu gufaa veechaare | Through the Word of the Guru’s Shabad, search this cave. - Guru Amardas Ji
ਨਾਮੁ ਨਿਰੰਜਨੁ ਅੰਤਰਿ ਵਸੈ ਮੁਰਾਰੇ ॥ naam niranjan antar vasai muraare | The Immaculate Naam, the Name of the Lord, abides deep within the self. - Guru Amardas Ji
ਹਰਿ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਵੈ ਸਬਦਿ ਸੁਹਾਏ ਮਿਲਿ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਮ ਸੁਖੁ ਪਾਵਣਿਆ ॥੪॥ har gun gaavai sabad suhaae mil preetam sukh paavaniaa |4| Sing the Glorious Praises of the Lord, and decorate yourself with the Shabad. Meeting with your Beloved, you shall find peace. ||4|| - Guru Amardas Ji
ਜਮੁ ਜਾਗਾਤੀ ਦੂਜੈ ਭਾਇ ਕਰੁ ਲਾਏ ॥ jam jaagaatee doojai bhaae kar laae | The Messenger of Death imposes his tax on those who are attached to duality. - Guru Amardas Ji
ਨਾਵਹੁ ਭੂਲੇ ਦੇਇ ਸਜਾਏ ॥ naavahu bhoole dee sajaae | He inflicts punishment on those who forget the Name. - Guru Amardas Ji
ਘੜੀ ਮੁਹਤ ਕਾ ਲੇਖਾ ਲੇਵੈ ਰਤੀਅਹੁ ਮਾਸਾ ਤੋਲ ਕਢਾਵਣਿਆ ॥੫॥ gharree muhat kaa lekhaa levai rateeahu maasaa tol kadtaavaniaa |5| They are called to account for each instant and each moment. Every grain, every particle, is weighed and counted. ||5|| - Guru Amardas Ji
ਪੇਈਅੜੈ ਪਿਰੁ ਚੇਤੇ ਨਾਹੀ ॥ peeearrai pir chete naahee | One who does not remember her Husband Lord in this world is being cheated by duality; - Guru Amardas Ji
ਦੂਜੈ ਮੁਠੀ ਰੋਵੈ ਧਾਹੀ ॥ doojai mutthee rovai dhaahee | She shall weep bitterly in the end. - Guru Amardas Ji
ਖਰੀ ਕੁਆਲਿਓ ਕੁਰੂਪਿ ਕੁਲਖਣੀ ਸੁਪਨੈ ਪਿਰੁ ਨਹੀ ਪਾਵਣਿਆ ॥੬॥ kharee kuaalio kuroop kulakhanee supanai pir nahee paavaniaa |6| She is from an evil family; she is ugly and vile. Even in her dreams, she does not meet her Husband Lord. ||6|| - Guru Amardas Ji
ਪੇਈਅੜੈ ਪਿਰੁ ਮੰਨਿ ਵਸਾਇਆ ॥ peeearrai pir man vasaaeaa | She who enshrines her Husband Lord in her mind in this world - Guru Amardas Ji
ਪੂਰੈ ਗੁਰਿ ਹਦੂਰਿ ਦਿਖਾਇਆ ॥ poorai gur hadoor dikhaaeaa | His Presence is revealed to her by the Perfect Guru. - Guru Amardas Ji
ਕਾਮਣਿ ਪਿਰੁ ਰਾਖਿਆ ਕੰਠਿ ਲਾਇ ਸਬਦੇ ਪਿਰੁ ਰਾਵੈ ਸੇਜ ਸੁਹਾਵਣਿਆ ॥੭॥ kaaman pir raakhiaa kantth laae sabade pir raavai sej suhaavaniaa |7| That soul-bride keeps her Husband Lord clasped tightly to her heart, and through the Word of the Shabad, she enjoys her Husband Lord upon His Beautiful Bed. ||7|| - Guru Amardas Ji
ਆਪੇ ਦੇਵੈ ਸਦਿ ਬੁਲਾਏ ॥ aape devai sad bulaae | The Lord Himself sends out the call, and He summons us to His Presence. - Guru Amardas Ji
ਆਪਣਾ ਨਾਉ ਮੰਨਿ ਵਸਾਏ ॥ aapanaa naau man vasaae | He enshrines His Name within our minds. - Guru Amardas Ji
ਨਾਨਕ ਨਾਮੁ ਮਿਲੈ ਵਡਿਆਈ ਅਨਦਿਨੁ ਸਦਾ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਵਣਿਆ ॥੮॥੨੮॥੨੯॥ naanak naam milai vaddiaaee anadin sadaa gun gaavaniaa |8|28|29| O Nanak, one who receives the greatness of the Naam night and day, constantly sings His Glorious Praises. ||8||28||29|| - Guru Amardas Ji

ਊਤਮ ਜਨਮੁ ਸੁਥਾਨਿ ਹੈ ਵਾਸਾ ॥ aootam janam suthaan hai vaasaa | Sublime is their birth, and the place where they dwell. - Guru Amardas Ji
ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਸੇਵਹਿ ਘਰ ਮਾਹਿ ਉਦਾਸਾ ॥ satigur seveh ghar maeh udaasaa | Those who serve the True Guru remain detached in the home of their own being. - Guru Amardas Ji
ਹਰਿ ਰੰਗਿ ਰਹਹਿ ਸਦਾ ਰੰਗਿ ਰਾਤੇ ਹਰਿ ਰਸਿ ਮਨੁ ਤ੍ਰਿਪਤਾਵਣਿਆ ॥੧॥ har rang raheh sadaa rang raate har ras man tripataavaniaa |1| They abide in the Lord’s Love, and constantly imbued with His Love, their minds are satisfied and fulfilled with the Lord’s Essence. ||1|| - Guru Amardas Ji
ਹਉ ਵਾਰੀ ਜੀਉ ਵਾਰੀ ਪੜਿ ਬੁਝਿ ਮੰਨਿ ਵਸਾਵਣਿਆ ॥ hau vaaree jeeo vaaree parr bujh man vasaavaniaa | I am a sacrifice, my soul is a sacrifice, to those who read of the Lord, who understand and enshrine Him within their minds. - Guru Amardas Ji
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਪੜਹਿ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਸਲਾਹਹਿ ਦਰਿ ਸਚੈ ਸੋਭਾ ਪਾਵਣਿਆ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥ guramukh parreh har naam salaaheh dar sachai sobhaa paavaniaa |1| rahaau | The Gurmukhs read and praise the Lord’s Name; they are honored in the True Court. ||1||Pause|| - Guru Amardas Ji
ਅਲਖ ਅਭੇਉ ਹਰਿ ਰਹਿਆ ਸਮਾਏ ॥ alakh abheo har rahiaa samaae | The Unseen and Inscrutable Lord is permeating and pervading everywhere. - Guru Amardas Ji
ਉਪਾਇ ਨ ਕਿਤੀ ਪਾਇਆ ਜਾਏ ॥ aupaae na kitee paaeaa jaae | He cannot be obtained by any effort. - Guru Amardas Ji
ਕਿਰਪਾ ਕਰੇ ਤਾ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਭੇਟੈ ਨਦਰੀ ਮੇਲਿ ਮਿਲਾਵਣਿਆ ॥੨॥ kirapaa kare taa satigur bhettai nadaree mel milaavaniaa |2| If the Lord grants His Grace, then we come to meet the True Guru. By His Kindness, we are united in His Union. ||2|| - Guru Amardas Ji
ਦੂਜੈ ਭਾਇ ਪੜੈ ਨਹੀ ਬੂਝੈ ॥ doojai bhaae parrai nahee boojhai | One who reads, while attached to duality, does not understand. - Guru Amardas Ji
ਤ੍ਰਿਬਿਧਿ ਮਾਇਆ ਕਾਰਣਿ ਲੂਝੈ ॥ tribidh maaeaa kaaran loojhai | He yearns for the three-phased Maya. - Guru Amardas Ji
ਤ੍ਰਿਬਿਧਿ ਬੰਧਨ ਤੂਟਹਿ ਗੁਰਸਬਦੀ ਗੁਰਸਬਦੀ ਮੁਕਤਿ ਕਰਾਵਣਿਆ ॥੩॥ tribidh bandhan tootteh gurasabadee gurasabadee mukat karaavaniaa |3| The bonds of the three-phased Maya are broken by the Word of the Guru’s Shabad. Through the Guru’s Shabad, liberation is achieved. ||3|| - Guru Amardas Ji
ਇਹੁ ਮਨੁ ਚੰਚਲੁ ਵਸਿ ਨ ਆਵੈ ॥ eihu man chanchal vas na aavai | This unstable mind cannot be held steady. - Guru Amardas Ji
ਦੁਬਿਧਾ ਲਾਗੈ ਦਹ ਦਿਸਿ ਧਾਵੈ ॥ dubidhaa laagai deh dis dhaavai | Attached to duality, it wanders in the ten directions. - Guru Amardas Ji
ਬਿਖੁ ਕਾ ਕੀੜਾ ਬਿਖੁ ਮਹਿ ਰਾਤਾ ਬਿਖੁ ਹੀ ਮਾਹਿ ਪਚਾਵਣਿਆ ॥੪॥ bikh kaa keerraa bikh meh raataa bikh hee maeh pachaavaniaa |4| It is a poisonous worm, drenched with poison, and in poison it rots away. ||4|| - Guru Amardas Ji
ਹਉ ਹਉ ਕਰੇ ਤੈ ਆਪੁ ਜਣਾਏ ॥ hau hau kare tai aap janaae | Practicing egotism and selfishness, they try to impress others by showing off. - Guru Amardas Ji
ਬਹੁ ਕਰਮ ਕਰੈ ਕਿਛੁ ਥਾਇ ਨ ਪਾਏ ॥ bahu karam karai kichh thaae na paae | They perform all sorts of rituals, but they gain no acceptance. - Guru Amardas Ji
ਤੁਝ ਤੇ ਬਾਹਰਿ ਕਿਛੂ ਨ ਹੋਵੈ ਬਖਸੇ ਸਬਦਿ ਸੁਹਾਵਣਿਆ ॥੫॥ tujh te baahar kichhoo na hovai bakhase sabad suhaavaniaa |5| Without You, Lord, nothing happens at all. You forgive those who are adorned with the Word of Your Shabad. ||5|| - Guru Amardas Ji
ਉਪਜੈ ਪਚੈ ਹਰਿ ਬੂਝੈ ਨਾਹੀ ॥ aupajai pachai har boojhai naahee | They are born, and they die, but they do not understand the Lord. - Guru Amardas Ji
ਅਨਦਿਨੁ ਦੂਜੈ ਭਾਇ ਫਿਰਾਹੀ ॥ anadin doojai bhaae firaahee | Night and day, they wander, in love with duality. - Guru Amardas Ji
ਮਨਮੁਖ ਜਨਮੁ ਗਇਆ ਹੈ ਬਿਰਥਾ ਅੰਤਿ ਗਇਆ ਪਛੁਤਾਵਣਿਆ ॥੬॥ manamukh janam geaa hai birathaa ant geaa pachhutaavaniaa |6| The lives of the self-willed manmukhs are useless; in the end, they die, regretting and repenting. ||6|| - Guru Amardas Ji
ਪਿਰੁ ਪਰਦੇਸਿ ਸਿਗਾਰੁ ਬਣਾਏ ॥ pir parades sigaar banaae | The Husband is away, and the wife is getting dressed up. - Guru Amardas Ji
ਮਨਮੁਖ ਅੰਧੁ ਐਸੇ ਕਰਮ ਕਮਾਏ ॥ manamukh andh aise karam kamaae | This is what the blind, self-willed manmukhs are doing. - Guru Amardas Ji
ਹਲਤਿ ਨ ਸੋਭਾ ਪਲਤਿ ਨ ਢੋਈ ਬਿਰਥਾ ਜਨਮੁ ਗਵਾਵਣਿਆ ॥੭॥ halat na sobhaa palat na dtoee birathaa janam gavaavaniaa |7| They are not honored in this world, and they shall find no shelter in the world hereafter. They are wasting their lives in vain. ||7|| - Guru Amardas Ji
ਹਰਿ ਕਾ ਨਾਮੁ ਕਿਨੈ ਵਿਰਲੈ ਜਾਤਾ ॥ har kaa naam kinai viralai jaataa | How rare are those who know the Name of the Lord! - Guru Amardas Ji
ਪੂਰੇ ਗੁਰ ਕੈ ਸਬਦਿ ਪਛਾਤਾ ॥ poore gur kai sabad pachhaataa | Through the Shabad, the Word of the Perfect Guru, the Lord is realized. - Guru Amardas Ji
ਅਨਦਿਨੁ ਭਗਤਿ ਕਰੇ ਦਿਨੁ ਰਾਤੀ ਸਹਜੇ ਹੀ ਸੁਖੁ ਪਾਵਣਿਆ ॥੮॥ anadin bhagat kare din raatee sahaje hee sukh paavaniaa |8| Night and day, they perform the Lord’s devotional service; day and night, they find intuitive peace. ||8|| - Guru Amardas Ji
ਸਭ ਮਹਿ ਵਰਤੈ ਏਕੋ ਸੋਈ ॥ sabh meh varatai eko soee | That One Lord is pervading in all. - Guru Amardas Ji
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਵਿਰਲਾ ਬੂਝੈ ਕੋਈ ॥ guramukh viralaa boojhai koee | Only a few, as Gurmukh, understand this. - Guru Amardas Ji
ਨਾਨਕ ਨਾਮਿ ਰਤੇ ਜਨ ਸੋਹਹਿ ਕਰਿ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਆਪਿ ਮਿਲਾਵਣਿਆ ॥੯॥੨੯॥੩੦॥ naanak naam rate jan soheh kar kirapaa aap milaavaniaa |9|29|30| O Nanak, those who are attuned to the Naam are beautiful. Granting His Grace, God unites them with Himself. ||9||29||30|| - Guru Amardas Ji
