ਇਕਿ ਕੂੜਿ ਲਾਗੇ ਕੂੜੇ ਫਲ ਪਾਏ ॥ eik koorr laage koorre fal paae | Some are stuck in falsehood, and false are the rewards they receive. - Guru Amardas Ji
ਦੂਜੈ ਭਾਇ ਬਿਰਥਾ ਜਨਮੁ ਗਵਾਏ ॥ doojai bhaae birathaa janam gavaae | In love with duality, they waste away their lives in vain. - Guru Amardas Ji
ਆਪਿ ਡੁਬੇ ਸਗਲੇ ਕੁਲ ਡੋਬੇ ਕੂੜੁ ਬੋਲਿ ਬਿਖੁ ਖਾਵਣਿਆ ॥੬॥ aap ddube sagale kul ddobe koorr bol bikh khaavaniaa |6| They drown themselves, and drown their entire family; speaking lies, they eat poison. ||6|| - Guru Amardas Ji
ਇਸੁ ਤਨ ਮਹਿ ਮਨੁ ਕੋ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਦੇਖੈ ॥ eis tan meh man ko guramukh dekhai | How rare are those who, as Gurmukh, look within their bodies, into their minds. - Guru Amardas Ji
ਭਾਇ ਭਗਤਿ ਜਾ ਹਉਮੈ ਸੋਖੈ ॥ bhaae bhagat jaa haumai sokhai | Through loving devotion, their ego evaporates. - Guru Amardas Ji
ਸਿਧ ਸਾਧਿਕ ਮੋਨਿਧਾਰੀ ਰਹੇ ਲਿਵ ਲਾਇ ਤਿਨ ਭੀ ਤਨ ਮਹਿ ਮਨੁ ਨ ਦਿਖਾਵਣਿਆ ॥੭॥ sidh saadhik monidhaaree rahe liv laae tin bhee tan meh man na dikhaavaniaa |7| The Siddhas, the seekers and the silent sages continually, lovingly focus their consciousness, but they have not seen the mind within the body. ||7|| - Guru Amardas Ji
ਆਪਿ ਕਰਾਏ ਕਰਤਾ ਸੋਈ ॥ aap karaae karataa soee | The Creator Himself inspires us to work; - Guru Amardas Ji
ਹੋਰੁ ਕਿ ਕਰੇ ਕੀਤੈ ਕਿਆ ਹੋਈ ॥ hor ki kare keetai kiaa hoee | what can anyone else do? What can be done by our doing? - Guru Amardas Ji
ਨਾਨਕ ਜਿਸੁ ਨਾਮੁ ਦੇਵੈ ਸੋ ਲੇਵੈ ਨਾਮੋ ਮੰਨਿ ਵਸਾਵਣਿਆ ॥੮॥੨੩॥੨੪॥ naanak jis naam devai so levai naamo man vasaavaniaa |8|23|24| O Nanak, the Lord bestows His Name; we receive it, and enshrine it within the mind. ||8||23||24|| - Guru Amardas Ji
ਮਾਝ ਮਹਲਾ ੩ ॥ maajh mahalaa 3 | Maajh, Third Mehl: - Guru Amardas Ji
ਇਸੁ ਗੁਫਾ ਮਹਿ ਅਖੁਟ ਭੰਡਾਰਾ ॥ eis gufaa meh akhutt bhanddaaraa | Within this cave, there is an inexhaustible treasure. - Guru Amardas Ji
ਤਿਸੁ ਵਿਚਿ ਵਸੈ ਹਰਿ ਅਲਖ ਅਪਾਰਾ ॥ tis vich vasai har alakh apaaraa | Within this cave, the Invisible and Infinite Lord abides. - Guru Amardas Ji
ਆਪੇ ਗੁਪਤੁ ਪਰਗਟੁ ਹੈ ਆਪੇ ਗੁਰਸਬਦੀ ਆਪੁ ਵੰਞਾਵਣਿਆ ॥੧॥ aape gupat paragatt hai aape gurasabadee aap vanyaavaniaa |1| He Himself is hidden, and He Himself is revealed; through the Word of the Guru’s Shabad, selfishness and conceit are eliminated. ||1|| - Guru Amardas Ji
ਹਉ ਵਾਰੀ ਜੀਉ ਵਾਰੀ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਨਾਮੁ ਮੰਨਿ ਵਸਾਵਣਿਆ ॥ hau vaaree jeeo vaaree amrit naam man vasaavaniaa | I am a sacrifice, my soul is a sacrifice, to those who enshrine the Ambrosial Naam, the Name of the Lord, within their minds. - Guru Amardas Ji
ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਨਾਮੁ ਮਹਾ ਰਸੁ ਮੀਠਾ ਗੁਰਮਤੀ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤੁ ਪੀਆਵਣਿਆ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥ amrit naam mahaa ras meetthaa guramatee amrit peeaavaniaa |1| rahaau | The taste of the Ambrosial Naam is very sweet! Through the Guru’s Teachings, drink in this Ambrosial Nectar. ||1||Pause|| - Guru Amardas Ji
ਹਉਮੈ ਮਾਰਿ ਬਜਰ ਕਪਾਟ ਖੁਲਾਇਆ ॥ haumai maar bajar kapaatt khulaaeaa | Subduing egotism, the rigid doors are opened. - Guru Amardas Ji
ਨਾਮੁ ਅਮੋਲਕੁ ਗੁਰ ਪਰਸਾਦੀ ਪਾਇਆ ॥ naam amolak gur parasaadee paaeaa | The Priceless Naam is obtained by Guru’s Grace. - Guru Amardas Ji
ਬਿਨੁ ਸਬਦੈ ਨਾਮੁ ਨ ਪਾਏ ਕੋਈ ਗੁਰ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਮੰਨਿ ਵਸਾਵਣਿਆ ॥੨॥ bin sabadai naam na paae koee gur kirapaa man vasaavaniaa |2| Without the Shabad, the Naam is not obtained. By Guru’s Grace, it is implanted within the mind. ||2|| - Guru Amardas Ji
ਗੁਰ ਗਿਆਨ ਅੰਜਨੁ ਸਚੁ ਨੇਤ੍ਰੀ ਪਾਇਆ ॥ gur giaan anjan sach netree paaeaa | The Guru has applied the true ointment of spiritual wisdom to my eyes. - Guru Amardas Ji
ਅੰਤਰਿ ਚਾਨਣੁ ਅਗਿਆਨੁ ਅੰਧੇਰੁ ਗਵਾਇਆ ॥ antar chaanan agiaan andher gavaaeaa | Deep within, the Divine Light has dawned, and the darkness of ignorance has been dispelled. - Guru Amardas Ji
ਜੋਤੀ ਜੋਤਿ ਮਿਲੀ ਮਨੁ ਮਾਨਿਆ ਹਰਿ ਦਰਿ ਸੋਭਾ ਪਾਵਣਿਆ ॥੩॥ jotee jot milee man maaniaa har dar sobhaa paavaniaa |3| My light has merged into the Light; my mind has surrendered, and I am blessed with Glory in the Court of the Lord. ||3|| - Guru Amardas Ji
ਸਰੀਰਹੁ ਭਾਲਣਿ ਕੋ ਬਾਹਰਿ ਜਾਏ ॥ sareerahu bhaalan ko baahar jaae | Those who look outside the body, searching for the Lord, - Guru Amardas Ji
ਨਾਮੁ ਨ ਲਹੈ ਬਹੁਤੁ ਵੇਗਾਰਿ ਦੁਖੁ ਪਾਏ ॥ naam na lahai bahut vegaar dukh paae | Shall not receive the Naam; they shall instead be forced to suffer the terrible pains of slavery. - Guru Amardas Ji
ਮਨਮੁਖ ਅੰਧੇ ਸੂਝੈ ਨਾਹੀ ਫਿਰਿ ਘਿਰਿ ਆਇ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਵਥੁ ਪਾਵਣਿਆ ॥੪॥ manamukh andhe soojhai naahee fir ghir aae guramukh vath paavaniaa |4| The blind, self-willed manmukhs do not understand; but when they return once again to their own home, then, as Gurmukh, they find the genuine article. ||4|| - Guru Amardas Ji
ਗੁਰ ਪਰਸਾਦੀ ਸਚਾ ਹਰਿ ਪਾਏ ॥ gur parasaadee sachaa har paae | By Guru’s Grace, the True Lord is found. - Guru Amardas Ji
ਮਨਿ ਤਨਿ ਵੇਖੈ ਹਉਮੈ ਮੈਲੁ ਜਾਏ ॥ man tan vekhai haumai mail jaae | Within your mind and body, see the Lord, and the filth of egotism shall depart. - Guru Amardas Ji
ਬੈਸਿ ਸੁਥਾਨਿ ਸਦ ਹਰਿ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਵੈ ਸਚੈ ਸਬਦਿ ਸਮਾਵਣਿਆ ॥੫॥ bais suthaan sad har gun gaavai sachai sabad samaavaniaa |5| Sitting in that place, sing the Glorious Praises of the Lord forever, and be absorbed in the True Word of the Shabad. ||5|| - Guru Amardas Ji
ਨਉ ਦਰ ਠਾਕੇ ਧਾਵਤੁ ਰਹਾਏ ॥ nau dar tthaake dhaavat rahaae | Those who close off the nine gates, and restrain the wandering mind, - Guru Amardas Ji
ਦਸਵੈ ਨਿਜ ਘਰਿ ਵਾਸਾ ਪਾਏ ॥ dasavai nij ghar vaasaa paae | come to dwell in the Home of the Tenth Gate. - Guru Amardas Ji
ਓਥੈ ਅਨਹਦ ਸਬਦ ਵਜਹਿ ਦਿਨੁ ਰਾਤੀ ਗੁਰਮਤੀ ਸਬਦੁ ਸੁਣਾਵਣਿਆ ॥੬॥ othai anahad sabad vajeh din raatee guramatee sabad sunaavaniaa |6| There, the Unstruck Melody of the Shabad vibrates day and night. Through the Guru’s Teachings, the Shabad is heard. ||6|| - Guru Amardas Ji
ਬਿਨੁ ਸਬਦੈ ਅੰਤਰਿ ਆਨੇਰਾ ॥ bin sabadai antar aaneraa | Without the Shabad, there is only darkness within. - Guru Amardas Ji
ਨ ਵਸਤੁ ਲਹੈ ਨ ਚੂਕੈ ਫੇਰਾ ॥ n vasat lahai na chookai feraa | The genuine article is not found, and the cycle of reincarnation does not end. - Guru Amardas Ji
ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਹਥਿ ਕੁੰਜੀ ਹੋਰਤੁ ਦਰੁ ਖੁਲੈ ਨਾਹੀ ਗੁਰੁ ਪੂਰੈ ਭਾਗਿ ਮਿਲਾਵਣਿਆ ॥੭॥ satigur hath kunjee horat dar khulai naahee gur poorai bhaag milaavaniaa |7| The key is in the hands of the True Guru; no one else can open this door. By perfect destiny, He is met. ||7|| - Guru Amardas Ji
ਗੁਪਤੁ ਪਰਗਟੁ ਤੂੰ ਸਭਨੀ ਥਾਈ ॥ gupat paragatt toon sabhanee thaaee | You are the hidden and the revealed in all places. - Guru Amardas Ji
ਗੁਰ ਪਰਸਾਦੀ ਮਿਲਿ ਸੋਝੀ ਪਾਈ ॥ gur parasaadee mil sojhee paaee | Receiving Guru’s Grace, this understanding is obtained. - Guru Amardas Ji
ਨਾਨਕ ਨਾਮੁ ਸਲਾਹਿ ਸਦਾ ਤੂੰ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਮੰਨਿ ਵਸਾਵਣਿਆ ॥੮॥੨੪॥੨੫॥ naanak naam salaeh sadaa toon guramukh man vasaavaniaa |8|24|25| O Nanak, praise the Naam forever; as Gurmukh, enshrine it within the mind. ||8||24||25|| - Guru Amardas Ji

ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਮਿਲੈ ਮਿਲਾਏ ਆਪੇ ॥ guramukh milai milaae aape | The Gurmukhs meet the Lord, and inspire others to meet Him as well. - Guru Amardas Ji
ਕਾਲੁ ਨ ਜੋਹੈ ਦੁਖੁ ਨ ਸੰਤਾਪੇ ॥ kaal na johai dukh na santaape | Death does not see them, and pain does not afflict them. - Guru Amardas Ji
ਹਉਮੈ ਮਾਰਿ ਬੰਧਨ ਸਭ ਤੋੜੈ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਸਬਦਿ ਸੁਹਾਵਣਿਆ ॥੧॥ haumai maar bandhan sabh torrai guramukh sabad suhaavaniaa |1| Subduing egotism, they break all their bonds; as Gurmukh, they are adorned with the Word of the Shabad. ||1|| - Guru Amardas Ji
ਹਉ ਵਾਰੀ ਜੀਉ ਵਾਰੀ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮਿ ਸੁਹਾਵਣਿਆ ॥ hau vaaree jeeo vaaree har har naam suhaavaniaa | I am a sacrifice, my soul is a sacrifice, to those who look beautiful in the Name of the Lord, Har, Har. - Guru Amardas Ji
