ਸਬਦਿ ਮਰੈ ਮਨੁ ਮਾਰੈ ਅਪੁਨਾ ਮੁਕਤੀ ਕਾ ਦਰੁ ਪਾਵਣਿਆ ॥੩॥ sabad marai man maarai apunaa mukatee kaa dar paavaniaa |3| Those who die in the Shabad and subdue their own minds, obtain the door of liberation. ||3|| - Guru Amardas Ji
ਕਿਲਵਿਖ ਕਾਟੈ ਕ੍ਰੋਧੁ ਨਿਵਾਰੇ ॥ kilavikh kaattai krodh nivaare | They erase their sins, and eliminate their anger; - Guru Amardas Ji
ਗੁਰ ਕਾ ਸਬਦੁ ਰਖੈ ਉਰ ਧਾਰੇ ॥ gur kaa sabad rakhai ur dhaare | they keep the Guru’s Shabad clasped tightly to their hearts. - Guru Amardas Ji
ਸਚਿ ਰਤੇ ਸਦਾ ਬੈਰਾਗੀ ਹਉਮੈ ਮਾਰਿ ਮਿਲਾਵਣਿਆ ॥੪॥ sach rate sadaa bairaagee haumai maar milaavaniaa |4| Those who are attuned to Truth, remain balanced and detached forever. Subduing their egotism, they are united with the Lord. ||4|| - Guru Amardas Ji
ਅੰਤਰਿ ਰਤਨੁ ਮਿਲੈ ਮਿਲਾਇਆ ॥ antar ratan milai milaaeaa | Deep within the nucleus of the self is the jewel; we receive it only if the Lord inspires us to receive it. - Guru Amardas Ji
ਤ੍ਰਿਬਿਧਿ ਮਨਸਾ ਤ੍ਰਿਬਿਧਿ ਮਾਇਆ ॥ tribidh manasaa tribidh maaeaa | The mind is bound by the three dispositions-the three modes of Maya. - Guru Amardas Ji
ਪੜਿ ਪੜਿ ਪੰਡਿਤ ਮੋਨੀ ਥਕੇ ਚਉਥੇ ਪਦ ਕੀ ਸਾਰ ਨ ਪਾਵਣਿਆ ॥੫॥ parr parr panddit monee thake chauthe pad kee saar na paavaniaa |5| Reading and reciting, the Pandits, the religious scholars, and the silent sages have grown weary, but they have not found the supreme essence of the fourth state. ||5|| - Guru Amardas Ji
ਆਪੇ ਰੰਗੇ ਰੰਗੁ ਚੜਾਏ ॥ aape range rang charraae | The Lord Himself dyes us in the color of His Love. - Guru Amardas Ji
ਸੇ ਜਨ ਰਾਤੇ ਗੁਰ ਸਬਦਿ ਰੰਗਾਏ ॥ se jan raate gur sabad rangaae | Only those who are steeped in the Word of the Guru’s Shabad are so imbued with His Love. - Guru Amardas Ji
ਹਰਿ ਰੰਗੁ ਚੜਿਆ ਅਤਿ ਅਪਾਰਾ ਹਰਿ ਰਸਿ ਰਸਿ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਵਣਿਆ ॥੬॥ har rang charriaa at apaaraa har ras ras gun gaavaniaa |6| Imbued with the most beautiful color of the Lord’s Love, they sing the Glorious Praises of the Lord, with great pleasure and joy. ||6|| - Guru Amardas Ji
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਰਿਧਿ ਸਿਧਿ ਸਚੁ ਸੰਜਮੁ ਸੋਈ ॥ guramukh ridh sidh sach sanjam soee | To the Gurmukh, the True Lord is wealth, miraculous spiritual powers and strict self-discipline. - Guru Amardas Ji
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਗਿਆਨੁ ਨਾਮਿ ਮੁਕਤਿ ਹੋਈ ॥ guramukh giaan naam mukat hoee | Through the spiritual wisdom of the Naam, the Name of the Lord, the Gurmukh is liberated. - Guru Amardas Ji
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਕਾਰ ਸਚੁ ਕਮਾਵਹਿ ਸਚੇ ਸਚਿ ਸਮਾਵਣਿਆ ॥੭॥ guramukh kaar sach kamaaveh sache sach samaavaniaa |7| The Gurmukh practices Truth, and is absorbed in the Truest of the True. ||7|| - Guru Amardas Ji
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਥਾਪੇ ਥਾਪਿ ਉਥਾਪੇ ॥ guramukh thaape thaap uthaape | The Gurmukh realizes that the Lord alone creates, and having created, He destroys. - Guru Amardas Ji
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਜਾਤਿ ਪਤਿ ਸਭੁ ਆਪੇ ॥ guramukh jaat pat sabh aape | To the Gurmukh, the Lord Himself is social class, status and all honor. - Guru Amardas Ji
ਨਾਨਕ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਧਿਆਏ ਨਾਮੇ ਨਾਮਿ ਸਮਾਵਣਿਆ ॥੮॥੧੨॥੧੩॥ naanak guramukh naam dhiaae naame naam samaavaniaa |8|12|13| O Nanak, the Gurmukhs meditate on the Naam; through the Naam, they merge in the Naam. ||8||12||13|| - Guru Amardas Ji
ਮਾਝ ਮਹਲਾ ੩ ॥ maajh mahalaa 3 | Maajh, Third Mehl: - Guru Amardas Ji
ਉਤਪਤਿ ਪਰਲਉ ਸਬਦੇ ਹੋਵੈ ॥ autapat parlau sabade hovai | Creation and destruction happen through the Word of the Shabad. - Guru Amardas Ji
ਸਬਦੇ ਹੀ ਫਿਰਿ ਓਪਤਿ ਹੋਵੈ ॥ sabade hee fir opat hovai | Through the Shabad, creation happens again. - Guru Amardas Ji
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਵਰਤੈ ਸਭੁ ਆਪੇ ਸਚਾ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਉਪਾਇ ਸਮਾਵਣਿਆ ॥੧॥ guramukh varatai sabh aape sachaa guramukh upaae samaavaniaa |1| The Gurmukh knows that the True Lord is all-pervading. The Gurmukh understands creation and merger. ||1|| - Guru Amardas Ji
ਹਉ ਵਾਰੀ ਜੀਉ ਵਾਰੀ ਗੁਰੁ ਪੂਰਾ ਮੰਨਿ ਵਸਾਵਣਿਆ ॥ hau vaaree jeeo vaaree gur pooraa man vasaavaniaa | I am a sacrifice, my soul is a sacrifice, to those who enshrine the Perfect Guru within their minds. - Guru Amardas Ji
ਗੁਰ ਤੇ ਸਾਤਿ ਭਗਤਿ ਕਰੇ ਦਿਨੁ ਰਾਤੀ ਗੁਣ ਕਹਿ ਗੁਣੀ ਸਮਾਵਣਿਆ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥ gur te saat bhagat kare din raatee gun keh gunee samaavaniaa |1| rahaau | From the Guru comes peace and tranquility; worship Him with devotion, day and night. Chanting His Glorious Praises, merge into the Glorious Lord. ||1||Pause|| - Guru Amardas Ji
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਧਰਤੀ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਪਾਣੀ ॥ guramukh dharatee guramukh paanee | The Gurmukh sees the Lord on the earth, and the Gurmukh sees Him in the water. - Guru Amardas Ji
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਪਵਣੁ ਬੈਸੰਤਰੁ ਖੇਲੈ ਵਿਡਾਣੀ ॥ guramukh pavan baisantar khelai viddaanee | The Gurmukh sees Him in wind and fire; such is the wonder of His Play. - Guru Amardas Ji
ਸੋ ਨਿਗੁਰਾ ਜੋ ਮਰਿ ਮਰਿ ਜੰਮੈ ਨਿਗੁਰੇ ਆਵਣ ਜਾਵਣਿਆ ॥੨॥ so niguraa jo mar mar jamai nigure aavan jaavaniaa |2| One who has no Guru, dies over and over again, only to be re-born. One who has no Guru continues coming and going in reincarnation. ||2|| - Guru Amardas Ji
ਤਿਨਿ ਕਰਤੈ ਇਕੁ ਖੇਲੁ ਰਚਾਇਆ ॥ tin karatai ik khel rachaaeaa | The One Creator has set this play in motion. - Guru Amardas Ji
ਕਾਇਆ ਸਰੀਰੈ ਵਿਚਿ ਸਭੁ ਕਿਛੁ ਪਾਇਆ ॥ kaaeaa sareerai vich sabh kichh paaeaa | In the frame of the human body, He has placed all things. - Guru Amardas Ji
ਸਬਦਿ ਭੇਦਿ ਕੋਈ ਮਹਲੁ ਪਾਏ ਮਹਲੇ ਮਹਲਿ ਬੁਲਾਵਣਿਆ ॥੩॥ sabad bhed koee mehal paae mahale mehal bulaavaniaa |3| Those few who are pierced through by the Word of the Shabad, obtain the Mansion of the Lord’s Presence. He calls them into His Wondrous Palace. ||3|| - Guru Amardas Ji
ਸਚਾ ਸਾਹੁ ਸਚੇ ਵਣਜਾਰੇ ॥ sachaa saahu sache vanajaare | True is the Banker, and true are His traders. - Guru Amardas Ji
ਸਚੁ ਵਣੰਜਹਿ ਗੁਰ ਹੇਤਿ ਅਪਾਰੇ ॥ sach vananjeh gur het apaare | They purchase Truth, with infinite love for the Guru. - Guru Amardas Ji
ਸਚੁ ਵਿਹਾਝਹਿ ਸਚੁ ਕਮਾਵਹਿ ਸਚੋ ਸਚੁ ਕਮਾਵਣਿਆ ॥੪॥ sach vihaajheh sach kamaaveh sacho sach kamaavaniaa |4| They deal in Truth, and they practice Truth. They earn Truth, and only Truth. ||4|| - Guru Amardas Ji
ਬਿਨੁ ਰਾਸੀ ਕੋ ਵਥੁ ਕਿਉ ਪਾਏ ॥ bin raasee ko vath kiau paae | Without investment capital, how can anyone acquire merchandise? - Guru Amardas Ji
ਮਨਮੁਖ ਭੂਲੇ ਲੋਕ ਸਬਾਏ ॥ manamukh bhoole lok sabaae | The self-willed manmukhs have all gone astray. - Guru Amardas Ji
ਬਿਨੁ ਰਾਸੀ ਸਭ ਖਾਲੀ ਚਲੇ ਖਾਲੀ ਜਾਇ ਦੁਖੁ ਪਾਵਣਿਆ ॥੫॥ bin raasee sabh khaalee chale khaalee jaae dukh paavaniaa |5| Without true wealth, everyone goes empty-handed; going empty-handed, they suffer in pain. ||5|| - Guru Amardas Ji
ਇਕਿ ਸਚੁ ਵਣੰਜਹਿ ਗੁਰ ਸਬਦਿ ਪਿਆਰੇ ॥ eik sach vananjeh gur sabad piaare | Some deal in Truth, through love of the Guru’s Shabad. - Guru Amardas Ji
ਆਪਿ ਤਰਹਿ ਸਗਲੇ ਕੁਲ ਤਾਰੇ ॥ aap tareh sagale kul taare | They save themselves, and save all their ancestors as well. - Guru Amardas Ji
ਆਏ ਸੇ ਪਰਵਾਣੁ ਹੋਏ ਮਿਲਿ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਮ ਸੁਖੁ ਪਾਵਣਿਆ ॥੬॥ aae se paravaan hoe mil preetam sukh paavaniaa |6| Very auspicious is the coming of those who meet their Beloved and find peace. ||6|| - Guru Amardas Ji
ਅੰਤਰਿ ਵਸਤੁ ਮੂੜਾ ਬਾਹਰੁ ਭਾਲੇ ॥ antar vasat moorraa baahar bhaale | Deep within the self is the secret, but the fool looks for it outside. - Guru Amardas Ji
ਮਨਮੁਖ ਅੰਧੇ ਫਿਰਹਿ ਬੇਤਾਲੇ ॥ manamukh andhe fireh betaale | The blind self-willed manmukhs wander around like demons; - Guru Amardas Ji
ਜਿਥੈ ਵਥੁ ਹੋਵੈ ਤਿਥਹੁ ਕੋਇ ਨ ਪਾਵੈ ਮਨਮੁਖ ਭਰਮਿ ਭੁਲਾਵਣਿਆ ॥੭॥ jithai vath hovai tithahu koe na paavai manamukh bharam bhulaavaniaa |7| but where the secret is, there, they do not find it. The manmukhs are deluded by doubt. ||7|| - Guru Amardas Ji
ਆਪੇ ਦੇਵੈ ਸਬਦਿ ਬੁਲਾਏ ॥ aape devai sabad bulaae | He Himself calls us, and bestows the Word of the Shabad. - Guru Amardas Ji
ਮਹਲੀ ਮਹਲਿ ਸਹਜ ਸੁਖੁ ਪਾਏ ॥ mahalee mehal sehaj sukh paae | The soul-bride finds intuitive peace and poise in the Mansion of the Lord’s Presence. - Guru Amardas Ji
ਨਾਨਕ ਨਾਮਿ ਮਿਲੈ ਵਡਿਆਈ ਆਪੇ ਸੁਣਿ ਸੁਣਿ ਧਿਆਵਣਿਆ ॥੮॥੧੩॥੧੪॥ naanak naam milai vaddiaaee aape sun sun dhiaavaniaa |8|13|14| O Nanak, she obtains the glorious greatness of the Naam; she hears it again and again, and she meditates on it. ||8||13||14|| - Guru Amardas Ji
