ਗੁਰਮਤੀ ਆਪੁ ਪਛਾਣਿਆ ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮ ਪਰਗਾਸੁ ॥ guramatee aap pachhaaniaa raam naam paragaas | Follow the Guru’s Teachings, and recognize your own self; the Divine Light of the Lord’s Name shall shine within. - Guru Amardas Ji
ਸਚੋ ਸਚੁ ਕਮਾਵਣਾ ਵਡਿਆਈ ਵਡੇ ਪਾਸਿ ॥ sacho sach kamaavanaa vaddiaaee vadde paas | The true ones practice Truth; greatness rests in the Great Lord. - Guru Amardas Ji
ਜੀਉ ਪਿੰਡੁ ਸਭੁ ਤਿਸ ਕਾ ਸਿਫਤਿ ਕਰੇ ਅਰਦਾਸਿ ॥ jeeo pindd sabh tis kaa sifat kare aradaas | Body, soul and all things belong to the Lord-praise Him, and offer your prayers to Him. - Guru Amardas Ji
ਸਚੈ ਸਬਦਿ ਸਾਲਾਹਣਾ ਸੁਖੇ ਸੁਖਿ ਨਿਵਾਸੁ ॥ sachai sabad saalaahanaa sukhe sukh nivaas | Sing the Praises of the True Lord through the Word of His Shabad, and you shall abide in the peace of peace. - Guru Amardas Ji
ਜਪੁ ਤਪੁ ਸੰਜਮੁ ਮਨੈ ਮਾਹਿ ਬਿਨੁ ਨਾਵੈ ਧ੍ਰਿਗੁ ਜੀਵਾਸੁ ॥ jap tap sanjam manai maeh bin naavai dhrig jeevaas | You may practice chanting, penance and austere self-discipline within your mind, but without the Name, life is useless. - Guru Amardas Ji
ਗੁਰਮਤੀ ਨਾਉ ਪਾਈਐ ਮਨਮੁਖ ਮੋਹਿ ਵਿਣਾਸੁ ॥ guramatee naau paaeeai manamukh mohi vinaas | Through the Guru’s Teachings, the Name is obtained, while the self-willed manmukh wastes away in emotional attachment. - Guru Amardas Ji
ਜਿਉ ਭਾਵੈ ਤਿਉ ਰਾਖੁ ਤੂੰ ਨਾਨਕੁ ਤੇਰਾ ਦਾਸੁ ॥੨॥ jiau bhaavai tiau raakh toon naanak teraa daas |2| Please protect me, by the Pleasure of Your Will. Nanak is Your slave. ||2|| - Guru Amardas Ji

ਸਭੁ ਕੋ ਤੇਰਾ ਤੂੰ ਸਭਸੁ ਦਾ ਤੂੰ ਸਭਨਾ ਰਾਸਿ ॥ sabh ko teraa toon sabhas daa toon sabhanaa raas | All are Yours, and You belong to all. You are the wealth of all. - Guru Ramdas Ji
ਸਭਿ ਤੁਧੈ ਪਾਸਹੁ ਮੰਗਦੇ ਨਿਤ ਕਰਿ ਅਰਦਾਸਿ ॥ sabh tudhai paasahu mangade nit kar aradaas | Everyone begs from You, and all offer prayers to You each day. - Guru Ramdas Ji
ਜਿਸੁ ਤੂੰ ਦੇਹਿ ਤਿਸੁ ਸਭੁ ਕਿਛੁ ਮਿਲੈ ਇਕਨਾ ਦੂਰਿ ਹੈ ਪਾਸਿ ॥ jis toon dehi tis sabh kichh milai ikanaa door hai paas | Those, unto whom You give, receive everything. You are far away from some, and You are close to others. - Guru Ramdas Ji
ਤੁਧੁ ਬਾਝਹੁ ਥਾਉ ਕੋ ਨਾਹੀ ਜਿਸੁ ਪਾਸਹੁ ਮੰਗੀਐ ਮਨਿ ਵੇਖਹੁ ਕੋ ਨਿਰਜਾਸਿ ॥ tudh baajhahu thaau ko naahee jis paasahu mangeeai man vekhahu ko nirajaas | Without You, there is not even a place to stand begging. See this yourself and verify it in your mind. - Guru Ramdas Ji
ਸਭਿ ਤੁਧੈ ਨੋ ਸਾਲਾਹਦੇ ਦਰਿ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਾ ਨੋ ਪਰਗਾਸਿ ॥੯॥ sabh tudhai no saalaahade dar guramukhaa no paragaas |9| All praise You, O Lord; at Your Door, the Gurmukhs are enlightened. ||9|| - Guru Ramdas Ji

ਪੰਡਿਤੁ ਪੜਿ ਪੜਿ ਉਚਾ ਕੂਕਦਾ ਮਾਇਆ ਮੋਹਿ ਪਿਆਰੁ ॥ panddit parr parr uchaa kookadaa maaeaa mohi piaar | The Pandits, the religious scholars, read and read, and shout out loud, but they are attached to the love of Maya. - Guru Amardas Ji
ਅੰਤਰਿ ਬ੍ਰਹਮੁ ਨ ਚੀਨਈ ਮਨਿ ਮੂਰਖੁ ਗਾਵਾਰੁ ॥ antar braham na cheenee man moorakh gaavaar | They do not recognize God within themselves-they are so foolish and ignorant! - Guru Amardas Ji
ਦੂਜੈ ਭਾਇ ਜਗਤੁ ਪਰਬੋਧਦਾ ਨਾ ਬੂਝੈ ਬੀਚਾਰੁ ॥ doojai bhaae jagat parabodhadaa naa boojhai beechaar | In the love of duality, they try to teach the world, but they do not understand meditative contemplation. - Guru Amardas Ji
ਬਿਰਥਾ ਜਨਮੁ ਗਵਾਇਆ ਮਰਿ ਜੰਮੈ ਵਾਰੋ ਵਾਰ ॥੧॥ birathaa janam gavaaeaa mar jamai vaaro vaar |1| They lose their lives uselessly; they die, only to be re-born, over and over again. ||1|| - Guru Amardas Ji

ਜਿਨੀ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਸੇਵਿਆ ਤਿਨੀ ਨਾਉ ਪਾਇਆ ਬੂਝਹੁ ਕਰਿ ਬੀਚਾਰੁ ॥ jinee satigur seviaa tinee naau paaeaa boojhahu kar beechaar | Those who serve the True Guru obtain the Name. Reflect on this and understand. - Guru Amardas Ji
ਸਦਾ ਸਾਂਤਿ ਸੁਖੁ ਮਨਿ ਵਸੈ ਚੂਕੈ ਕੂਕ ਪੁਕਾਰ ॥ sadaa saant sukh man vasai chookai kook pukaar | Eternal peace and joy abide in their minds; they abandon their cries and complaints. - Guru Amardas Ji
ਆਪੈ ਨੋ ਆਪੁ ਖਾਇ ਮਨੁ ਨਿਰਮਲੁ ਹੋਵੈ ਗੁਰਸਬਦੀ ਵੀਚਾਰੁ ॥ aapai no aap khaae man niramal hovai gurasabadee veechaar | Their identity consumes their identical identity, and their minds become pure by contemplating the Word of the Guru’s Shabad. - Guru Amardas Ji
ਨਾਨਕ ਸਬਦਿ ਰਤੇ ਸੇ ਮੁਕਤੁ ਹੈ ਹਰਿ ਜੀਉ ਹੇਤਿ ਪਿਆਰੁ ॥੨॥ naanak sabad rate se mukat hai har jeeo het piaar |2| O Nanak, attuned to the Shabad, they are liberated. They love their Beloved Lord. ||2|| - Guru Amardas Ji
ਪਉੜੀ ॥ paurree | Pauree: - Guru Ramdas Ji
ਹਰਿ ਕੀ ਸੇਵਾ ਸਫਲ ਹੈ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਪਾਵੈ ਥਾਇ ॥ har kee sevaa safal hai guramukh paavai thaae | Service to the Lord is fruitful; through it, the Gurmukh is honored and approved. - Guru Ramdas Ji
ਜਿਸੁ ਹਰਿ ਭਾਵੈ ਤਿਸੁ ਗੁਰੁ ਮਿਲੈ ਸੋ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਧਿਆਇ ॥ jis har bhaavai tis gur milai so har naam dhiaae | That person, with whom the Lord is pleased, meets with the Guru, and meditates on the Name of the Lord. - Guru Ramdas Ji
ਗੁਰਸਬਦੀ ਹਰਿ ਪਾਈਐ ਹਰਿ ਪਾਰਿ ਲਘਾਇ ॥ gurasabadee har paaeeai har paar laghaae | Through the Word of the Guru’s Shabad, the Lord is found. The Lord carries us across. - Guru Ramdas Ji
ਮਨਹਠਿ ਕਿਨੈ ਨ ਪਾਇਓ ਪੁਛਹੁ ਵੇਦਾ ਜਾਇ ॥ manahatth kinai na paaeo puchhahu vedaa jaae | Through stubborn-mindedness, none have found Him; go and consult the Vedas on this. - Guru Ramdas Ji
ਨਾਨਕ ਹਰਿ ਕੀ ਸੇਵਾ ਸੋ ਕਰੇ ਜਿਸੁ ਲਏ ਹਰਿ ਲਾਇ ॥੧੦॥ naanak har kee sevaa so kare jis le har laae |10| O Nanak, he alone serves the Lord, whom the Lord attaches to Himself. ||10|| - Guru Ramdas Ji

ਨਾਨਕ ਸੋ ਸੂਰਾ ਵਰੀਆਮੁ ਜਿਨਿ ਵਿਚਹੁ ਦੁਸਟੁ ਅਹੰਕਰਣੁ ਮਾਰਿਆ ॥ naanak so sooraa vareeaam jin vichahu dusatt ahankaran maariaa | O Nanak, he is a brave warrior, who conquers and subdues his vicious inner ego. - Guru Amardas Ji
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਸਾਲਾਹਿ ਜਨਮੁ ਸਵਾਰਿਆ ॥ guramukh naam saalaeh janam savaariaa | Praising the Naam, the Name of the Lord, the Gurmukhs redeem their lives. - Guru Amardas Ji
ਆਪਿ ਹੋਆ ਸਦਾ ਮੁਕਤੁ ਸਭੁ ਕੁਲੁ ਨਿਸਤਾਰਿਆ ॥ aap hoaa sadaa mukat sabh kul nisataariaa | They themselves are liberated forever, and they save all their ancestors. - Guru Amardas Ji
ਸੋਹਨਿ ਸਚਿ ਦੁਆਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਪਿਆਰਿਆ ॥ sohan sach duaar naam piaariaa | Those who love the Naam look beauteous at the Gate of Truth. - Guru Amardas Ji
ਮਨਮੁਖ ਮਰਹਿ ਅਹੰਕਾਰਿ ਮਰਣੁ ਵਿਗਾੜਿਆ ॥ manamukh mareh ahankaar maran vigaarriaa | The self-willed manmukhs die in egotism-even their death is painfully ugly. - Guru Amardas Ji
ਸਭੋ ਵਰਤੈ ਹੁਕਮੁ ਕਿਆ ਕਰਹਿ ਵਿਚਾਰਿਆ ॥ sabho varatai hukam kiaa kareh vichaariaa | Everything happens according to the Lord’s Will; what can the poor people do? - Guru Amardas Ji
ਆਪਹੁ ਦੂਜੈ ਲਗਿ ਖਸਮੁ ਵਿਸਾਰਿਆ ॥ aapahu doojai lag khasam visaariaa | Attached to self-conceit and duality, they have forgotten their Lord and Master. - Guru Amardas Ji
ਨਾਨਕ ਬਿਨੁ ਨਾਵੈ ਸਭੁ ਦੁਖੁ ਸੁਖੁ ਵਿਸਾਰਿਆ ॥੧॥ naanak bin naavai sabh dukh sukh visaariaa |1| O Nanak, without the Name, everything is painful, and happiness is forgotten. ||1|| - Guru Amardas Ji

ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮੁ ਹਰਿ ਕੀਰਤਿ ਗਾਈ ਕਰਿ ਚਾਨਣੁ ਮਗੁ ਦਿਖਾਇਆ ॥ raam naam har keerat gaaee kar chaanan mag dikhaaeaa | I sing the Lord’s Name and the Kirtan of the Lord’s Praises; the Divine Light shines, and now I see the Way. - Guru Amardas Ji
ਹਉਮੈ ਮਾਰਿ ਏਕ ਲਿਵ ਲਾਗੀ ਅੰਤਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਵਸਾਇਆ ॥ haumai maar ek liv laagee antar naam vasaaeaa | Conquering my ego, I am lovingly focused on the One Lord; the Naam has come to dwell within me. - Guru Amardas Ji
