ਅੰਤਿ ਕਾਲਿ ਪਛੁਤਾਸੀ ਅੰਧੁਲੇ ਜਾ ਜਮਿ ਪਕੜਿ ਚਲਾਇਆ ॥ ant kaal pachhutaasee andhule jaa jam pakarr chalaaeaa | At the last moment, you repent-you are so blind!-when the Messenger of Death seizes you and carries you away. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਸਭੁ ਕਿਛੁ ਅਪੁਨਾ ਕਰਿ ਕਰਿ ਰਾਖਿਆ ਖਿਨ ਮਹਿ ਭਇਆ ਪਰਾਇਆ ॥ sabh kichh apunaa kar kar raakhiaa khin meh bheaa paraaeaa | You kept all your things for yourself, but in an instant, they are all lost. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਬੁਧਿ ਵਿਸਰਜੀ ਗਈ ਸਿਆਣਪ ਕਰਿ ਅਵਗਣ ਪਛੁਤਾਇ ॥ budh visarajee gee siaanap kar avagan pachhutaae | Your intellect left you, your wisdom departed, and now you repent for the evil deeds you committed. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਕਹੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਪ੍ਰਾਣੀ ਤੀਜੈ ਪਹਰੈ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਚੇਤਹੁ ਲਿਵ ਲਾਇ ॥੩॥ kahu naanak praanee teejai paharai prabh chetahu liv laae |3| Says Nanak, O mortal, in the third watch of the night, let your consciousness be lovingly focused on God. ||3|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਚਉਥੈ ਪਹਰੈ ਰੈਣਿ ਕੈ ਵਣਜਾਰਿਆ ਮਿਤ੍ਰਾ ਬਿਰਧਿ ਭਇਆ ਤਨੁ ਖੀਣੁ ॥ chauthai paharai rain kai vanajaariaa mitraa biradh bheaa tan kheen | In the fourth watch of the night, O my merchant friend, your body grows old and weak. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਅਖੀ ਅੰਧੁ ਨ ਦੀਸਈ ਵਣਜਾਰਿਆ ਮਿਤ੍ਰਾ ਕੰਨੀ ਸੁਣੈ ਨ ਵੈਣ ॥ akhee andh na deesee vanajaariaa mitraa kanee sunai na vain | Your eyes go blind, and cannot see, O my merchant friend, and your ears do not hear any words. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਅਖੀ ਅੰਧੁ ਜੀਭ ਰਸੁ ਨਾਹੀ ਰਹੇ ਪਰਾਕਉ ਤਾਣਾ ॥ akhee andh jeebh ras naahee rahe paraakau taanaa | Your eyes go blind, and your tongue is unable to taste; you live only with the help of others. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਗੁਣ ਅੰਤਰਿ ਨਾਹੀ ਕਿਉ ਸੁਖੁ ਪਾਵੈ ਮਨਮੁਖ ਆਵਣ ਜਾਣਾ ॥ gun antar naahee kiau sukh paavai manamukh aavan jaanaa | With no virtue within, how can you find peace? The self-willed manmukh comes and goes in reincarnation. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਖੜੁ ਪਕੀ ਕੁੜਿ ਭਜੈ ਬਿਨਸੈ ਆਇ ਚਲੈ ਕਿਆ ਮਾਣੁ ॥ kharr pakee kurr bhajai binasai aae chalai kiaa maan | When the crop of life has matured, it bends, breaks and perishes; why take pride in that which comes and goes? - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਕਹੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਪ੍ਰਾਣੀ ਚਉਥੈ ਪਹਰੈ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਸਬਦੁ ਪਛਾਣੁ ॥੪॥ kahu naanak praanee chauthai paharai guramukh sabad pachhaan |4| Says Nanak, O mortal, in the fourth watch of the night, the Gurmukh recognizes the Word of the Shabad. ||4|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਓੜਕੁ ਆਇਆ ਤਿਨ ਸਾਹਿਆ ਵਣਜਾਰਿਆ ਮਿਤ੍ਰਾ ਜਰੁ ਜਰਵਾਣਾ ਕੰਨਿ ॥ orrak aaeaa tin saahiaa vanajaariaa mitraa jar jaravaanaa kan | Your breath comes to its end, O my merchant friend, and your shoulders are weighed down by the tyrant of old age. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਇਕ ਰਤੀ ਗੁਣ ਨ ਸਮਾਣਿਆ ਵਣਜਾਰਿਆ ਮਿਤ੍ਰਾ ਅਵਗਣ ਖੜਸਨਿ ਬੰਨਿ ॥ eik ratee gun na samaaniaa vanajaariaa mitraa avagan kharrasan ban | Not one iota of virtue came into you, O my merchant friend; bound and gagged by evil, you are driven along. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਗੁਣ ਸੰਜਮਿ ਜਾਵੈ ਚੋਟ ਨ ਖਾਵੈ ਨਾ ਤਿਸੁ ਜੰਮਣੁ ਮਰਣਾ ॥ gun sanjam jaavai chott na khaavai naa tis jaman maranaa | One who departs with virtue and self-discipline is not struck down, and is not consigned to the cycle of birth and death. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਕਾਲੁ ਜਾਲੁ ਜਮੁ ਜੋਹਿ ਨ ਸਾਕੈ ਭਾਇ ਭਗਤਿ ਭੈ ਤਰਣਾ ॥ kaal jaal jam johi na saakai bhaae bhagat bhai taranaa | The Messenger of Death and his trap cannot touch him; through loving devotional worship, he crosses over the ocean of fear. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਪਤਿ ਸੇਤੀ ਜਾਵੈ ਸਹਜਿ ਸਮਾਵੈ ਸਗਲੇ ਦੂਖ ਮਿਟਾਵੈ ॥ pat setee jaavai sehaj samaavai sagale dookh mittaavai | He departs with honor, and merges in intuitive peace and poise; all his pains depart. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਕਹੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਪ੍ਰਾਣੀ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਛੂਟੈ ਸਾਚੇ ਤੇ ਪਤਿ ਪਾਵੈ ॥੫॥੨॥ kahu naanak praanee guramukh chhoottai saache te pat paavai |5|2| Says Nanak, when the mortal becomes Gurmukh, he is saved and honored by the True Lord. ||5||2|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji

ਹਰਿ ਧਿਆਵੈ ਹਰਿ ਉਚਰੈ ਵਣਜਾਰਿਆ ਮਿਤ੍ਰਾ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਸਮਾਰਿ ॥ har dhiaavai har ucharai vanajaariaa mitraa har har naam samaar | You meditate on the Lord, and chant the Lord’s Name, O my merchant friend. You contemplate the Name of the Lord, Har, Har. - Guru Ramdas Ji
ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਜਪੇ ਆਰਾਧੇ ਵਿਚਿ ਅਗਨੀ ਹਰਿ ਜਪਿ ਜੀਵਿਆ ॥ har har naam jape aaraadhe vich aganee har jap jeeviaa | Chanting the Name of the Lord, Har, Har, and meditating on it within the fire of the womb, your life is sustained by dwelling on the Naam. - Guru Ramdas Ji
ਬਾਹਰਿ ਜਨਮੁ ਭਇਆ ਮੁਖਿ ਲਾਗਾ ਸਰਸੇ ਪਿਤਾ ਮਾਤ ਥੀਵਿਆ ॥ baahar janam bheaa mukh laagaa sarase pitaa maat theeviaa | You are born and you come out, and your mother and father are delighted to see your face. - Guru Ramdas Ji
ਜਿਸ ਕੀ ਵਸਤੁ ਤਿਸੁ ਚੇਤਹੁ ਪ੍ਰਾਣੀ ਕਰਿ ਹਿਰਦੈ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਬੀਚਾਰਿ ॥ jis kee vasat tis chetahu praanee kar hiradai guramukh beechaar | Remember the One, O mortal, to whom the child belongs. As Gurmukh, reflect upon Him within your heart. - Guru Ramdas Ji
ਕਹੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਪ੍ਰਾਣੀ ਪਹਿਲੈ ਪਹਰੈ ਹਰਿ ਜਪੀਐ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਧਾਰਿ ॥੧॥ kahu naanak praanee pahilai paharai har japeeai kirapaa dhaar |1| Says Nanak, O mortal, in the first watch of the night, dwell upon the Lord, who shall shower you with His Grace. ||1|| - Guru Ramdas Ji
ਦੂਜੈ ਪਹਰੈ ਰੈਣਿ ਕੈ ਵਣਜਾਰਿਆ ਮਿਤ੍ਰਾ ਮਨੁ ਲਾਗਾ ਦੂਜੈ ਭਾਇ ॥ doojai paharai rain kai vanajaariaa mitraa man laagaa doojai bhaae | In the second watch of the night, O my merchant friend, the mind is attached to the love of duality. - Guru Ramdas Ji
ਮੇਰਾ ਮੇਰਾ ਕਰਿ ਪਾਲੀਐ ਵਣਜਾਰਿਆ ਮਿਤ੍ਰਾ ਲੇ ਮਾਤ ਪਿਤਾ ਗਲਿ ਲਾਇ ॥ meraa meraa kar paaleeai vanajaariaa mitraa le maat pitaa gal laae | Mother and father hug you close in their embrace, claiming, “He is mine, he is mine”; so is the child brought up, O my merchant friend. - Guru Ramdas Ji
ਲਾਵੈ ਮਾਤ ਪਿਤਾ ਸਦਾ ਗਲ ਸੇਤੀ ਮਨਿ ਜਾਣੈ ਖਟਿ ਖਵਾਏ ॥ laavai maat pitaa sadaa gal setee man jaanai khatt khavaae | Your mother and father constantly hug you close in their embrace; in their minds, they believe that you will provide for them and support them. - Guru Ramdas Ji
ਜੋ ਦੇਵੈ ਤਿਸੈ ਨ ਜਾਣੈ ਮੂੜਾ ਦਿਤੇ ਨੋ ਲਪਟਾਏ ॥ jo devai tisai na jaanai moorraa dite no lapattaae | The fool does not know the One who gives; instead, he clings to the gift. - Guru Ramdas Ji
ਕੋਈ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਹੋਵੈ ਸੁ ਕਰੈ ਵੀਚਾਰੁ ਹਰਿ ਧਿਆਵੈ ਮਨਿ ਲਿਵ ਲਾਇ ॥ koee guramukh hovai su karai veechaar har dhiaavai man liv laae | Rare is the Gurmukh who reflects upon, meditates upon, and within his mind, is lovingly attached to the Lord. - Guru Ramdas Ji
ਕਹੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਦੂਜੈ ਪਹਰੈ ਪ੍ਰਾਣੀ ਤਿਸੁ ਕਾਲੁ ਨ ਕਬਹੂੰ ਖਾਇ ॥੨॥ kahu naanak doojai paharai praanee tis kaal na kabahoon khaae |2| Says Nanak, in the second watch of the night, O mortal, death never devours you. ||2|| - Guru Ramdas Ji
ਤੀਜੈ ਪਹਰੈ ਰੈਣਿ ਕੈ ਵਣਜਾਰਿਆ ਮਿਤ੍ਰਾ ਮਨੁ ਲਗਾ ਆਲਿ ਜੰਜਾਲਿ ॥ teejai paharai rain kai vanajaariaa mitraa man lagaa aal janjaal | In the third watch of the night, O my merchant friend, your mind is entangled in worldly and household affairs. - Guru Ramdas Ji
ਧਨੁ ਚਿਤਵੈ ਧਨੁ ਸੰਚਵੈ ਵਣਜਾਰਿਆ ਮਿਤ੍ਰਾ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮਾ ਹਰਿ ਨ ਸਮਾਲਿ ॥ dhan chitavai dhan sanchavai vanajaariaa mitraa har naamaa har na samaal | You think of wealth, and gather wealth, O my merchant friend, but you do not contemplate the Lord or the Lord’s Name. - Guru Ramdas Ji
ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮਾ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਕਦੇ ਨ ਸਮਾਲੈ ਜਿ ਹੋਵੈ ਅੰਤਿ ਸਖਾਈ ॥ har naamaa har har kade na samaalai ji hovai ant sakhaaee | You never dwell upon the Name of the Lord, Har, Har, who will be your only Helper and Support in the end. - Guru Ramdas Ji
